European Alternatives to Gorgias
Looking for a European alternative to Gorgias? Gorgias is a helpdesk for online stores sold by Gorgias Inc. of San Francisco, whose master subscription agreement is governed by Delaware law and the Federal Arbitration Act and sends every dispute to binding, confidential arbitration before the American Arbitration Association, with a class and collective action waiver.
Eleven European tools cover ecommerce support in different ways: ecommerce-first helpdesks, WhatsApp-first inboxes, shared-inbox and live-chat suites, and two general helpdesks that suit teams with their own integrations, from companies in Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Denmark.
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Key takeaways
- Gorgias is sold by Gorgias Inc. of San Francisco, with Delaware law, the Federal Arbitration Act and mandatory AAA arbitration for every dispute.
- eDesk (Dublin, xSellco Limited, Irish law) connects marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay as well as Shopify, Magento and WooCommerce, with a 14-day full-feature trial.
- Trengo (Netherlands) is an omnichannel inbox with a Shopify integration; its Boost plan lists €299 a month for 10 users on annual billing.
- Crisp (Nantes), Superchat (Berlin) and Smartsupp (Brno) each offer a free plan, with Shopify integrations described on their own pages.
- Chatarmin (Vienna) and Dixa (Copenhagen) are narrower: WhatsApp for shops, and a native Shopify app for a larger service team.
- Zammad, Omnidesk, Userlike and Customerly are general helpdesks or chat suites, not ecommerce products, and rank last for that reason.
Why people leave Gorgias
Gorgias is a helpdesk built for online stores. Its pages describe a unified inbox across email, chat and social channels, a native Shopify integration that shows orders, customers and products inside the ticket, actions such as cancelling or discounting an order from the conversation, and more than 300 integrations.
It also claims to power customer conversations for 40% of Shopify brands. Pricing is by ticket volume, not by agent: its helpdesk starts at $10 a month for 50 tickets and runs to $900 for 5,000 on monthly billing.
The contract is with Gorgias Inc. of San Francisco. Its master subscription agreement is governed by the Federal Arbitration Act, federal law and the laws of Delaware, and it sends every dispute between you and Gorgias to binding and confidential arbitration before one American Arbitration Association arbitrator, with a ban on class and collective claims.
The only carve-outs are small claims and emergency relief from Delaware courts. The data processing agreement is also with Gorgias Inc. and relies on standard contractual clauses for transfers out of the EEA.
This page is about helpdesks for shops. Six of the eleven European tools are ecommerce-first or have a verified Shopify or marketplace link, one has a native Shopify app, and four are general helpdesks or chat suites that you would connect to a shop yourself. They are listed in that order, and the text says where a tool is not an ecommerce product.
- Every dispute goes to arbitration in a US system Section 13.9 of the agreement requires binding, confidential arbitration for any dispute between the customer and Gorgias, under the Federal Arbitration Act and AAA rules, with individual claims only. The arbitrator can direct the losing party to pay the other side's reasonable attorneys' fees. For a European shop that wants a contracting party and a court in its own region, the eleven tools below name European contracting entities, and the terms read for this page choose European law, with the Dixa Inc. variant of the Dixa terms as the exception. The terms of Chatarmin, Omnidesk and Customerly could not be read.
- The vendor is American, the subprocessors mostly are too Gorgias's subprocessor list names Cloudflare, Segment, Confluent, Datadog, Stripe, Twilio, OpenAI and many others, nearly all located in the United States, with Google Cloud Platform listed in the United States, the European Union and Australia. Gorgias SAS in France appears as an affiliate for service and support. The contracting party for the DPA is still Gorgias Inc. If your own privacy review needs a European chain of processors, ask each European vendor for its list too.
- Price scales with tickets, which is good until it is not Gorgias prices its helpdesk by ticket volume, from $10 a month for 50 tickets to $900 for 5,000, and says it is never priced per agent. That helps a small team with a high ticket count, and it hurts a store whose volume spikes at Black Friday. The European tools here mostly charge per agent or per seat (Zammad, eDesk, Smartsupp) or by conversations (Trengo), so the comparison depends on your volume and team size.
- Shopify depth is where Gorgias leads Gorgias describes its Shopify integration as native, with order lookup and actions in the ticket. Of the European tools, eDesk, Trengo, Crisp, Smartsupp, Superchat, Chatarmin and Dixa describe Shopify integrations on their own pages, but none of them was tested here against Gorgias feature by feature. If you depend on a particular Gorgias action, trial the replacement with your own store first.
What you have to replace, not just match
Write down what your Gorgias account does: channels in use (email, chat, WhatsApp, Instagram), the number of tickets in a normal month and in your peak month, macros and rules, and which Shopify actions your team uses every day, such as refunds, cancellations and address changes. A low-volume shop that mainly answers email moves almost anywhere. A shop that handles refunds from the inbox needs a tool that does so, so test that first.
Check how each tool charges. Gorgias counts tickets; eDesk lists a price per user per month with its AI agent charged per outcome; Smartsupp, Crisp and Zammad price per operator or agent; Trengo and Superchat price per plan with conversation or contact limits. Estimate your own monthly cost at normal and peak volume before you decide.
Run the new tool beside Gorgias for a few weeks with a shared email address or forwarding rule, move your macros and tags, and only then change your contact forms and reply-to address. Export your ticket history from Gorgias before you cancel, since it will not move into another tool on its own.
The alternatives compared

eDesk
the ecommerce helpdesk most like Gorgias, with marketplaces on top
Best for: Online sellers who handle Amazon, eBay and Shopify messages in one inbox
eDesk is a brand of xSellco Limited, an Irish incorporated entity with its registered office at Two Haddington Buildings, Haddington Road, Dublin 4. The terms apply the laws of Ireland and give the courts of Ireland exclusive jurisdiction.
Its site lists marketplace integrations (Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Mirakl, Veepee), communication channels (TikTok Shop, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Gmail) and store platforms (Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Prestashop, Shopware), with more than 300 integrations in total.
The pricing page lists plans per user per month with an AI agent charged per outcome. The amounts are shown in US dollars, so none is quoted here. It offers a 14-day full-feature free trial with no credit card and a 30-day guarantee.
What eDesk does better than Gorgias
- Irish company under Irish law, where Gorgias uses Delaware law and AAA arbitration
- Marketplace connections (Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Mirakl) next to store platforms
- A 14-day full-feature trial without a card
Where eDesk is a step down from Gorgias
- Priced per user, which costs more as the team grows, where Gorgias is priced per ticket
- Amounts are shown in US dollars on the page read
- Ownership structure behind xSellco was not checked
Standout against Gorgias. Marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay sit in the same inbox as Shopify and the other store platforms.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Netherlands). Gorgias is run from the United States, so the CLOUD Act obliges the provider to hand over data on a valid order regardless of which country the servers are in.
- Where the data sits. EU (Netherlands).
- Source code. Closed source, as Gorgias is.
- Independently checked. GDPR.
Best for: Shops that talk to customers on WhatsApp, Instagram and email and want one shared inbox
Trengo B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under number 72043687, and its terms (latest update 6 January 2026) are exclusively subject to Dutch law. The site footer describes it as European-owned, which is its own claim and was not checked in a register.
Its Shopify page describes an integration that brings customer context into conversations and an AI agent that answers availability questions from the live Shopify catalogue. Channels listed include WhatsApp, TikTok, email, live chat, voice, Instagram and Facebook.
The pricing page lists Boost at €299 a month for 10 users and 6,000 conversations a year on annual billing, and Pro at €499 for 20 users; the monthly view shows €349 and €599. There is a free trial, and the currency can be switched.

- Dutch company under Dutch law
- Many messaging channels in one inbox, including WhatsApp and TikTok
- Euro prices on the page, with annual and monthly views
Where Trengo is a step down from Gorgias
- Starts at €299 a month for 10 users, which is steep for a very small shop
- No free plan, only a trial
- Conversation limits per plan
Standout against Gorgias. Its Shopify page describes an AI agent that answers stock questions from the live catalogue.
- Which law reaches it. EU (France). Gorgias is run from the United States, so the CLOUD Act obliges the provider to hand over data on a valid order regardless of which country the servers are in.
- Where the data sits. EU.
- Source code. Closed source, as Gorgias is.
- Independently checked. GDPR.
Best for: Small shops that want a free live chat and shared inbox to start, then grow
Crisp is CRISP IM SAS, 2 boulevard de Launay, 44100 Nantes. Its terms are governed by the laws of France and disputes go to the commercial court of Nantes. The footer says it is built from France.
The pricing page lists a Free plan with 2 agents, and paid plans in US dollars on the page read, so no figure is quoted. The Shopify page describes a central inbox, customer order history inside the conversation and a free live chat with e-commerce features, plus iOS and Android apps.
Crisp's pages describe an AI-first support suite; the details of those features were not tested here.
What Crisp does better than Gorgias
- French company under French law with a local commercial court
- Free plan with 2 agents
- Shopify app showing order history in the inbox
Where Crisp is a step down from Gorgias
- Shopify actions are described less fully than Gorgias's order actions
- Paid prices shown in US dollars on the page read
- The free plan has limits on the profiles and history that you must check
Standout against Gorgias. It gives a free plan with two agents to a team that has not yet decided to pay.
Superchat
a Berlin inbox built around WhatsApp, with a free plan
Best for: Shops whose customers mostly write on WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger
Superchat is run by SuperX GmbH, Prenzlauer Allee 242-247, 10405 Berlin, entered at the Amtsgericht Charlottenburg as HRB 218902 B. The terms apply the law of the Federal Republic of Germany and name Berlin as the place of jurisdiction.
The pricing page lists Free at €0 (one WhatsApp number, one employee, 30 active contacts), Basic at €89, Professional at €149 and Advanced at €299 a month, with monthly and annual views. Its home page says it has over 30 integrations, including HubSpot and Shopify.
It is a messaging inbox with automations and an AI agent more than a full helpdesk with ticket queues and SLAs.
What Superchat does better than Gorgias
- German company under German law with a Berlin forum
- A free plan, and euro prices published for every tier
- WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger in one inbox
Where Superchat is a step down from Gorgias
- Free plan allows one employee and 30 active contacts
- Fewer ticketing features than a classic helpdesk
- Shopify depth was not tested against Gorgias
Standout against Gorgias. Its free plan includes a WhatsApp number.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Czech Republic). Gorgias is run from the United States, so the CLOUD Act obliges the provider to hand over data on a valid order regardless of which country the servers are in.
- Where the data sits. Germany, on Amazon Web Services (AI features use OpenAI Ireland, where data may leave the EU).
- Source code. Closed source, as Gorgias is.
Best for: Small online stores that want live chat and a chatbot on the site first, and email later
Smartsupp is Smartsupp.com, s.r.o., Palachovo namesti 799/5, 625 00 Brno (ID 03668681, registered at the regional court in Brno, file C 86206). The terms are governed by the law of the Czech Republic, with exclusive jurisdiction of Czech courts.
The pricing page lists a Free plan with one operator and 25 conversations a month, and paid plans such as Solo at €14 a month on annual billing, with a 14-day trial and no card. The Shopify page describes seeing customer details, order details and history in the chat and a chatbot that helps visitors find products.
It is a live chat first product, so it covers a shared inbox and automations but not a full ticketing helpdesk.
What Smartsupp does better than Gorgias
- Czech company under Czech law with registry details published
- A free plan and a 14-day trial without a card
- Shopify app showing orders in the chat
Where Smartsupp is a step down from Gorgias
- Free plan caps at 25 conversations a month and one operator
- Chat-first, so less suited to long email-ticket queues
- Shopify actions described less fully than Gorgias's
Standout against Gorgias. Its free plan covers live chat, WhatsApp and Messenger for one operator.
Chatarmin
a Vienna WhatsApp inbox and marketing tool made for online shops
Best for: Shops that want WhatsApp support and marketing from one tool connected to Shopify
Chatarmin is chatarmin.com GmbH, Johannesgasse 23/5, 1010 Vienna (UID ATU76854717, commercial register court Handelsgericht Wien). The terms and their governing law were not found, and no price list was found on the pages read.
Its home page describes WhatsApp marketing with a Shopify integration set up in one click, WhatsApp newsletters, a chat inbox, an AI chatbot for recurring questions such as order status and returns, and connections to Shopify, Xentral, Klaviyo and Billbee.
It is built for shops and for WhatsApp specifically, not for email or voice.
What Chatarmin does better than Gorgias
- Austrian company with a commercial register entry
- Shopify set up in one click, with Xentral, Klaviyo and Billbee
- WhatsApp marketing and support in one product
Where Chatarmin is a step down from Gorgias
- Terms and prices could not be verified on the pages read
- WhatsApp-centred, so email-heavy support needs another tool
- A narrower helpdesk feature set than Gorgias
Standout against Gorgias. It joins WhatsApp newsletters and a support inbox for shops in the same product.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Denmark). Gorgias is run from the United States, so the CLOUD Act obliges the provider to hand over data on a valid order regardless of which country the servers are in.
- Where the data sits. EU customers: Amazon Web Services in Ireland, daily backup elsewhere in Europe; the privacy policy says other customers' data may be stored in the US.
- Source code. Closed source, as Gorgias is.
Best for: Established shops with a service team on phone, email and chat that wants orders and refunds inside the conversation
Dixa's terms of service (last updated 28 May 2025) name Dixa ApS, company number 36561009 in Denmark, as the party when there is no order form, with the laws of Denmark. When the order form is with Dixa Inc., the laws of the State of Delaware apply instead. Check which entity is on your order.
Its Shopify page says the integration is native, connects through the Shopify App Store without middleware, and lets agents view order histories, track shipments, cancel orders and issue refunds, with automations on live order data for 'where is my order' questions.
Pricing was not opened for this page; the site pushes visitors to book a demo.
What Dixa does better than Gorgias
- Danish company as the default contracting party
- Native Shopify app with refunds and cancellations from the conversation
- Phone, email, chat and social in one platform
Where Dixa is a step down from Gorgias
- A US entity can be the contracting party, with Delaware law
- Prices were not checked and it is demo-led
- Larger than a small shop needs
Standout against Gorgias. Its terms name two possible contracting entities, a Danish one and a US one, and the order form decides.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Germany). Gorgias is run from the United States, so the CLOUD Act obliges the provider to hand over data on a valid order regardless of which country the servers are in.
- Where the data sits. Your own infrastructure, or German cloud.
- Source code. Open source, where Gorgias is not: you can read what it does rather than take the description on trust.
Best for: Teams that want a classic ticket queue and control over where it runs, and connect their shop themselves
Zammad GmbH is at Marienstrasse 18, 10117 Berlin, entered at the Amtsgericht Charlottenburg as HRB 163946 B. The terms apply German law with Berlin as the exclusive place of jurisdiction. The hosted version runs in German data centres, according to the pricing page.
Hosted plans are listed per agent per month on annual billing: Starter v2 at €7 for up to 5 agents (email, web form, SMS), Professional v2 at €16 for up to 35 agents with chat and SLAs, and Plus v2 at €25 for unlimited agents with phone support and more channels. Monthly billing is €9, €18 and €27. A self-hosted option is also on the page.
No page read described a Shopify integration, so order lookups would need a connection you build.
What Zammad does better than Gorgias
- German company with a commercial register entry and a Berlin forum
- Per-agent prices published in euros, from €7
- A self-hosted option next to the hosted plans
Where Zammad is a step down from Gorgias
- No verified Shopify integration
- Per-agent pricing grows with the team
- Less polished for ecommerce macros and refunds than Gorgias
Standout against Gorgias. It is the only one on this page that offers a self-hosted version.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Netherlands). Gorgias is run from the United States, so the CLOUD Act obliges the provider to hand over data on a valid order regardless of which country the servers are in.
- Where the data sits. EU hosting.
- Source code. Closed source, as Gorgias is.
- Independently checked. ISO and NEN certified.
Best for: Dutch and Benelux teams that want a ticket system with email, chat, WhatsApp and phone and EU hosting
Omnidesk B.V. is the company named in the privacy policy, and the site says it is made in Leiden. Its hosting page says servers sit in space at TransIP in the Netherlands, in Amsterdam and Alblasserdam. Its terms and their governing law were not found on the pages read.
The home page describes tickets for email, live chat, WhatsApp and social media, telephone with direct national network access, customer timelines and workflow automation. The pricing page says the price depends on the number of users and the service level, with no amount shown.

Userlike (Lime Connect)

- Where the data sits. German data centres.
- Source code. Closed source, as Gorgias is.
- Independently checked. ISO 27001, GDPR.
Best for: Companies that want website chat, WhatsApp and email with AI agents from a German vendor
The product is now sold as Lime Connect (Userlike) GmbH, Koelnturm, Im Mediapark 8, 50670 Cologne. Its terms apply German law, with Cologne as the place of jurisdiction for merchants, and are directed at business customers, not consumers.
Its home page lists website chat, mobile app, WhatsApp, email, Instagram, Facebook Messenger and SMS, a shared message center, AI agents and workflows, and says it is built in Germany. A free trial and a sign-up for free are offered.
It targets sales and support teams in industries such as manufacturing and utilities, and no Shopify integration was found on the pages read.
What Userlike (Lime Connect) does better than Gorgias
- German company under German law
- Chat, WhatsApp, email and social in one message center
- AI agents and workflows on the same platform
Where Userlike (Lime Connect) is a step down from Gorgias
- Not an ecommerce product, with no verified Shopify link
- Pricing was not checked
- Rebranded under Lime Connect, which can confuse a search
Standout against Gorgias. It is the one on this page that has changed its name and parent brand.
Customerly
a Dublin chat and help-centre suite aimed at software teams
Best for: SaaS-style teams that want live chat, a help centre and an AI agent with EU-only data
Customerly Limited has its address at 40 Dame Street, Dublin, with VAT number IE3508167WH. Its site says it is based in Ireland and that all data is stored in the EU only. Its terms page could not be opened, so governing law and a full list of subprocessors were not checked.
The site describes an AI customer support agent, AI live chat, a help centre and mobile apps, and its own comparison pages position it against Zendesk and Intercom, in the language of software companies.
It has comparison pages that list Gorgias, but none of the pages read describes a Shopify integration.
What Customerly does better than Gorgias
- Irish company that says all data is stored in the EU
- Chat, help centre and AI agent together
- A free trial is offered
Where Customerly is a step down from Gorgias
- Aimed at SaaS teams, not at shops
- No verified Shopify integration
- Terms and prices were not read
Standout against Gorgias. It states 'All data is stored in EU only' in its footer.
What actually breaks when you switch
The hard part of leaving Gorgias is the Shopify wiring and the team habits, not the account. Rebuild your macros, tags and rules by hand, reconnect your store, and test refunds, cancellations and address changes on a real order before you switch the contact form. Export ticket history before cancelling, since it will not carry over by itself.
The comparison is easy to get wrong because pricing models differ: Gorgias charges by tickets, eDesk by user, Crisp, Smartsupp and Zammad by agent or operator, and Trengo and Superchat by plan with limits. Work out your monthly cost at normal volume and at peak volume, and remember that WhatsApp message fees from Meta are on top of the subscription for the WhatsApp-led tools.
Some tools here do less than Gorgias for a shop. Zammad, Omnidesk, Userlike and Customerly are not built around Shopify, and Chatarmin and Superchat are messaging first. If you rely on order actions inside the ticket, trial eDesk, Trengo, Crisp or Dixa with your own store.
Which European tool is closest to Gorgias?
eDesk is the closest in purpose: an ecommerce helpdesk that connects marketplaces (Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Mirakl, Veepee) and stores (Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Prestashop, Shopware). It is run by xSellco Limited in Dublin under Irish law. Its pricing is per user per month, with an AI agent charged per outcome, not per ticket.
Trengo and Crisp come next, each with a Shopify integration described on its own page. Trengo describes WhatsApp, Instagram and email in one inbox.
Which of these has a free plan or trial?
Crisp lists a Free plan with 2 agents. Superchat lists a Free plan with one WhatsApp number, one employee and 30 active contacts. Smartsupp lists a Free plan with one operator and 25 conversations a month, and a 14-day trial without a card. eDesk offers a 14-day full-feature trial without a credit card and a 30-day guarantee, and Trengo has a free trial. Zammad offers a free trial of its hosted plans.
Free plans are small. Check the conversation, contact and history limits before you rely on one for a shop.
Can I run WhatsApp support for my store with one of these?
Yes. Superchat is built around WhatsApp and also covers Instagram and Messenger. Chatarmin is a WhatsApp inbox and marketing tool with a one-click Shopify integration. Trengo and Smartsupp handle WhatsApp among their channels, and Userlike lists WhatsApp too.
WhatsApp business messaging has its own costs from Meta that are separate from the tool price, so ask each vendor what you will pay beyond the subscription.
Does the contract matter for a small shop?
It matters most for where a dispute is decided and who receives your customers' data. With Gorgias the agreement is with a US company and every dispute goes to arbitration under US law. With the tools here the contracting entity sits in the EU, in Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic or Denmark.
Dixa is the one with a caveat: its terms name Dixa ApS in Denmark as the party when there is no order form, and the law of Delaware applies when the order form is with Dixa Inc. Check which entity is on your order form.
Which one to pick
If you want the nearest thing to Gorgias with a European contract, start with eDesk. It is built for ecommerce support, connects marketplaces as well as Shopify, offers a 14-day trial and contracts with an Irish company under Irish law. For WhatsApp and Instagram-led support, Trengo is the cleaner choice, and for a free start, Crisp, Smartsupp or Superchat each offer a free plan.
Chatarmin fits shops that want WhatsApp marketing and support from one place, and Dixa fits larger service teams that want a native Shopify app for orders and refunds. Check which Dixa entity is on your order form.
Zammad, Omnidesk, Userlike and Customerly are real tools for general customer support, with German, Dutch and Irish contracting entities, but they are not ecommerce products. Pick them if you want a classic ticket system, a self-hosted option or EU-only hosting, and connect your shop yourself.
Be realistic about the gap. Gorgias has a deep Shopify integration and a large ecosystem, and none of the eleven is a drop-in copy. Switch if you want a European contracting party and no mandatory US arbitration, and keep Gorgias if its order actions and ticket-based pricing are what your team uses all day.
Frequently Asked Questions
eDesk is the closest on this page by the criteria used here: it is built for ecommerce support, connects marketplaces and stores, offers a 14-day trial and contracts with an Irish company under Irish law. Trengo is the stronger choice for WhatsApp and Instagram-led support, and Crisp or Smartsupp if you want a free plan. On its pricing page the helpdesk is listed by ticket volume with monthly billing: Starter at $10 for 50 tickets, Basic at $60 for 300, Pro at $360 for 2,000 and Advanced at $900 for 5,000.
