European Alternatives to Zoho Desk
Looking for a European alternative to Zoho Desk? Zoho Desk is sold by Zoho Corporation Private Limited of India, and its terms pick the governing law from your billing address: customers in EEA countries contract with Zoho Corporation B.V. under Dutch law with the courts of Utrecht, and India sits outside the EU and the EEA.
Eleven European tools cover the job: three open-source ticket systems, four shared-inbox and omnichannel tools, and four helpdesks for specific cases (a Slack-native B2B tool, an ecommerce helpdesk, a self-hosted licence and a project-linked helpdesk), from companies in Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark.
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Why people leave Zoho Desk
Zoho Desk is a customer support helpdesk sold by Zoho Corporation Private Limited of India. According to its pricing page it handles customer requests as tickets, with self-service, custom reports and customer-satisfaction ratings. That page lists a free edition with 3 users, paid Standard, Professional and Enterprise plans, telephony from Professional, and live chat through Zoho SalesIQ plus a chatbot in Enterprise. Prices are shown in local currency and vary by region, so none is quoted here.
This is not a simple "foreign contract" story. Zoho's contracting-entities page assigns a Zoho company by billing country: Zoho Corporation B.V. under Dutch law with the courts of Utrecht for EEA countries, Zoho Corporation GmbH under German law with Düsseldorf for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and Zoho Corporation Limited under the law of England and Wales for the UK. Its terms say the governing law depends on your billing address.
What stays is the group behind it. The parent is an Indian company, India is outside the EU and the EEA, and the privacy statement says Zoho group entities and third parties help provide the service. If you want a European vendor that owns the product itself, eleven helpdesks qualify, from open-source ticket systems to shared inboxes and specialist tools.
- The contract is European, the vendor is not A customer billed in an EEA country contracts with Zoho Corporation B.V. in the Netherlands, and a German customer with Zoho Corporation GmbH. That is a real European counterparty. The product, the roadmap and the group that runs the data still sit with an Indian parent, which matters if your policy asks for a European vendor and not only a European invoice.
- Prices depend on where you stand The Zoho Desk pricing page we opened showed rupees, and the page changes by region, so there is no single list price to compare. Several European tools here publish clear numbers: Zammad from €7 per agent per month on annual billing, Plain at $45 per user, SupportPal at $29.95 a month for a self-hosted licence, and Dixa from €89 per agent.
- You can run the software yourself Zammad, OTOBO and Znuny are open-source ticket systems, and SupportPal is a self-hosted licence. You choose the server and the country it sits in. Zoho Desk is a hosted service only, so a move to self-hosting also moves the work of updates, backups and uptime to you or to a partner.
- The suite may be why you stay Zoho Desk connects to other Zoho products such as SalesIQ for chat. If your team already runs on Zoho, replacing one app means rebuilding the links to the others. The tools here integrate with common services, but none ships a matching suite.
What you have to replace, not just match
List what your agents actually use: channels (email, chat, phone, WhatsApp), SLAs, automations, the help centre, reports and any custom fields. A small team with email and chat moves almost anywhere. A phone-heavy team with SLAs and custom workflows should test Zammad, Dixa or Omnidesk first.
Export your tickets and contacts before you cancel, and decide how much history to import. Run the new helpdesk on a secondary support address for a week, route a few real cases through it, then switch your main address and forms. Keep the Zoho account until the first full month on the new tool is closed.
The alternatives compared

How each alternative compares to Zoho Desk
- Which law reaches it. EU (Germany). Zoho Desk is operated from India, outside the EU and without an adequacy decision, so transfers rest on contractual safeguards rather than on the data staying inside the EEA.
- Where the data sits. Your own infrastructure, or German cloud.
- Source code. Open source, where Zoho Desk is not: you can read what it does rather than take the description on trust.
Best for: Teams of any size that want a full ticket system with a European host and public prices
Zammad is run from Berlin (Commercial Register Charlottenburg, HRB 163946 B). Its terms apply German law, with Berlin as the exclusive venue, and the German version of the agreement is the binding one.
Hosted plans on its pricing page are Starter at €7, Professional at €16 and Plus at €25 per agent per month on annual billing (€9, €18 and €27 monthly), excluding VAT.
Starter allows up to 5 agents with email, web form and SMS; Professional adds chat, Telegram, SLAs and a knowledge base; Plus adds Facebook and WhatsApp, phone support and deeper reporting. Servers are in German data centres, and the site mentions an ISO 27001-certified data centre. A free trial is offered, and it can also be self-hosted.
What Zammad does better than Zoho Desk
- Hosted in German data centres under German law, where Zoho is an Indian group with regional entities
- Open-source core you can run yourself
- Plain list prices per agent that do not depend on your country
- Agent counts are capped only on Starter (5) and Professional (35)
Where Zammad is a step down from Zoho Desk
- Fewer ready-made integrations than the Zoho suite
- WhatsApp and Facebook channels need the Plus plan
- AI features are optional and charged extra
- No built-in CRM or wider business suite
Standout against Zoho Desk. A full helpdesk you can host yourself or rent in Germany, with prices published for every tier.
- Which law reaches it. EU (France). Zoho Desk is operated from India, outside the EU and without an adequacy decision, so transfers rest on contractual safeguards rather than on the data staying inside the EEA.
- Where the data sits. EU.
- Source code. Closed source, as Zoho Desk is.
- Independently checked. GDPR.
Best for: Small teams that want live chat and a shared inbox before they need a full helpdesk
Crisp is provided by CRISP IM SAS at 2 boulevard de Launay in Nantes. Its terms say the agreement is governed by French law, with the Commercial court of Nantes handling disputes.
Its pricing page offers a Free forever plan with 2 seats, a 14-day trial of any plan with every feature, and a first paid plan at $45 per month per workspace with 4 seats and a shared email inbox. Its navigation lists a website chat widget, an AI chatbot, a CRM, a shared inbox, a ticketing system, a knowledge base and a help centre.
What Crisp does better than Zoho Desk
- A permanent free plan and a 14-day trial of all features
- Per-workspace pricing, so seats do not each add a licence on the first paid plan
- French company under French law with a named venue
- Chat, inbox, knowledge base and CRM from one vendor
Where Crisp is a step down from Zoho Desk
- Ticketing is one part of a chat-first product, not a deep helpdesk
- Prices were shown in dollars on the page we read
- We did not verify where Crisp hosts data
- The free plan has 2 seats and no AI credits
Standout against Zoho Desk. Chat, inbox and a knowledge base from one French vendor with a permanent free plan.
Teamwork Desk
a helpdesk that links tickets to project work, from Cork
Best for: Agencies and service teams whose support tickets turn into project tasks
Teamwork Desk is part of Teamwork.com, based at Campus 1 Park House, Blackpool Retail Park in Cork. Its terms of service say they are governed by Irish law. We read the general Teamwork.com terms and did not find a separate Desk agreement.
Its Desk pricing page lists Starter with up to 10 agents, a customer portal, a free help-docs site and a Teamwork.com integration, and Pro with time tracking on tickets, triggers, live chat and unlimited agents. It says no credit card is needed to start. We did not quote prices because the currency shown could not be confirmed.
What Teamwork Desk does better than Zoho Desk
- Tickets become tasks in the same company's project tool
- Time tracking on tickets on Pro
- Irish company under Irish law
- Start without a credit card
Where Teamwork Desk is a step down from Zoho Desk
- Strongest if you also use Teamwork.com projects
- Starter is capped at 10 agents
- Prices not confirmed here
- Only the general Teamwork.com terms were read, not a Desk-specific agreement
Standout against Zoho Desk. Support tickets and client projects share one account, so a ticket can become a task in a click.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Netherlands). Zoho Desk is operated from India, outside the EU and without an adequacy decision, so transfers rest on contractual safeguards rather than on the data staying inside the EEA.
- Where the data sits. EU (Netherlands).
- Source code. Closed source, as Zoho Desk is.
- Independently checked. GDPR.
Best for: Teams that talk to customers on WhatsApp and want one inbox for all channels
Trengo B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under number 72043687. Its terms say the agreement is exclusively subject to Dutch law. Its site describes it as European-owned, which is its own statement.
The pricing page lists Boost from €299 a month with 10 users and 6,000 conversations a year, and Pro at €499, with the free trial available from the homepage. Its privacy statement says personal data may be provided to parties outside the EEA, so ask for its sub-processor list.
What Trengo does better than Zoho Desk
- Dutch company under Dutch law
- WhatsApp, email, chat, social and voice in one inbox
- A free trial and public prices
- AI to handle repetitive questions in any language
Where Trengo is a step down from Zoho Desk
- Starts at €299 a month, far above Zoho Desk's free edition
- Conversation limits per year on the lower plans
- No free plan on the pages we read, only a trial
- Personal data may go outside the EEA
Standout against Zoho Desk. It treats WhatsApp as a first-class support channel, next to email and chat, in one inbox.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Netherlands). Zoho Desk is operated from India, outside the EU and without an adequacy decision, so transfers rest on contractual safeguards rather than on the data staying inside the EEA.
- Where the data sits. EU hosting.
- Source code. Closed source, as Zoho Desk is.
- Independently checked. ISO and NEN certified.
Best for: Customer service teams that want EU hosting and phone, email, chat and WhatsApp in tickets
Omnidesk B.V. is named in the privacy policy, and the site says it is made in Leiden. We did not find its trade register number or the governing law in the documents we opened.
Its hosting page says the servers are in TransIP data centres in Amsterdam and Alblasserdam, ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certified, with NEN 7510 certification. The site describes tickets for email, live chat, WhatsApp and social media, telephony, AI-assisted replies and call transcription, statistics and a free demo. No prices were shown on the pages we read.
What Omnidesk does better than Zoho Desk
- Servers in the Netherlands, named, with certifications listed
- Telephony and call transcription in the same ticket timeline
- One timeline per customer across channels
- Dutch company with EU support
Where Omnidesk is a step down from Zoho Desk
- No public prices on the pages we read
- The registry number and governing law were not found
- Demo only on the pages we read, no self-service trial
- Its site says it is aimed at large customer service teams
Standout against Zoho Desk. It publishes exactly where its servers are and which certifications that data centre holds.
Plain
support for B2B software teams, in Slack, Teams and email
Best for: B2B software companies that support customers in shared channels
Plain is Not Just Tickets Ltd, registered in England and Wales under number 12736513, with its registered address on Ashley Road in Altrincham. Its terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales with the courts of London having exclusive jurisdiction.
The pricing page lists Foundation at $45 per user per month billed annually ($55 monthly), Horizon at $99 per user per month, and a custom Frontier tier. Foundation includes Slack and email channels, Linear and Jira integrations, a help centre and AI credits. A 7-day free trial is offered without a credit card.
What Plain does better than Zoho Desk
- Slack, Microsoft Teams and Discord support built in
- Linear and Jira integrations for engineering escalation
- English company under English law with a London venue
- Trial without a credit card
Where Plain is a step down from Zoho Desk
- Built for B2B software, not phone-heavy or consumer support
- Per-user pricing from $45, far above a free helpdesk edition
- No free plan
- Credits cap the AI use on each plan
Standout against Zoho Desk. It meets B2B customers where they already talk, in Slack and Teams, not only in email.
OTOBO
an open-source service management platform for teams that host it themselves
Best for: IT-capable teams that want ITSM and customer service in one open-source system
OTOBO is made by Rother OSS GmbH of Leiblfing (Amtsgericht Straubing, HRB 12744). We did not find customer terms or a governing law for its services.
Its site calls OTOBO a web-based, modular service management platform, 100% open source and license-free, for IT and departmental services such as customer service, HR and facility management. Rother OSS sells consulting, training, OTRS migration, support and managed services.
What OTOBO does better than Zoho Desk
- License-free open source, so there is no per-agent software fee
- One platform for customer service and IT or HR service management
- German company with registry details published
- Migration help for teams coming from OTRS
Where OTOBO is a step down from Zoho Desk
- You host and maintain it, or pay for managed services
- No public price list for services
- Needs more setup than a hosted shared inbox, since you install it
- Governing law and terms not found
Standout against Zoho Desk. A license-free service-management system you can run on your own servers, from a German company.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Germany). Zoho Desk is operated from India, outside the EU and without an adequacy decision, so transfers rest on contractual safeguards rather than on the data staying inside the EEA.
- Where the data sits. Self-hosted on your own infrastructure; Znuny's managed hosting runs in "ISO 27001-certified data centres" whose location and operator are not stated.
- Source code. Open source, where Zoho Desk is not: you can read what it does rather than take the description on trust.
- Independently checked. SOC 2 (since 2024), ISO/IEC 27001:2022 (since January 2025).
Best for: Teams that want a free ticket system they can host themselves or with a partner
Znuny GmbH is in Berlin (Commercial register Charlottenburg, HRB 139852 B), as its imprint states. The privacy page names Znuny GmbH as the responsible party. We did not find customer terms with a governing law.
Its homepage presents Znuny as an open-source help desk platform for customer support or IT service management, free of charge, to run on your own servers or any cloud provider. It lists add-ons and features such as communication channels and security and permissions, and offers a demo.
What Znuny does better than Zoho Desk
- Free open-source software with no per-agent fee
- Run on your own servers or any cloud
- Highly customisable, by its own description
- German company with registry details published
Where Znuny is a step down from Zoho Desk
- You carry the hosting and maintenance
- No public prices for support or hosting
- Governing law and terms not found
- Support and hosting terms are not published
Standout against Zoho Desk. A free, customisable ticket system with the code in your hands.
- Which law reaches it. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA). Zoho Desk is operated from India, outside the EU and without an adequacy decision, so transfers rest on contractual safeguards rather than on the data staying inside the EEA.
- Where the data sits. Self-hosted only: runs on your own server; the pricing page lists no vendor-hosted plan.
- Source code. Closed source, as Zoho Desk is.
Best for: Small to mid-sized teams that want to host their own help desk for a flat fee
SupportPal Limited is registered in England and Wales under number 10035240. Its terms say they are governed by English law, with the courts of England and Wales having exclusive jurisdiction.
The pricing page sells a self-hosted licence at $29.95 a month or $299.95 a year, with unlimited operators, users, organisations, tickets and departments, one brand included and extra brands at $9.95 a month. The feature list includes email-to-ticket import, SLAs and business hours, reporting, a self-service area and multilingual support. A free trial is offered.
What SupportPal does better than Zoho Desk
- Flat licence with no per-agent fee, where Zoho Desk is per user
- You choose the server and its country
- English company under English law
- Unlimited tickets, operators and departments
Where SupportPal is a step down from Zoho Desk
- You run the software, including updates and backups
- Prices are in dollars
- Self-hosted only, with no hosted option
- The licence includes a powered-by line on client-facing pages
Standout against Zoho Desk. One flat price covers unlimited agents and tickets, on your own server.
eDesk
a helpdesk for ecommerce sellers on marketplaces, from Dublin
Best for: Online sellers who answer buyers on Amazon, eBay and webshops
eDesk's terms are with xSellco Limited, an Irish company at Two Haddington Buildings, Haddington Road in Dublin. The agreement is governed by the laws of Ireland, with the courts of Ireland having exclusive jurisdiction.
Its site lists marketplace inboxes for Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Mirakl and others, webshop platforms such as Shopify, Magento and WooCommerce, and social and chat channels, with more than 300 integrations and an AI agent. Pricing is per user, with the AI agent charged per outcome, and a free start is offered. We do not quote figures because the currency shown could not be confirmed.
What eDesk does better than Zoho Desk
- Marketplace inboxes that general helpdesks lack
- Irish company under Irish law
- Order and shipping integrations for sellers
- AI agent priced per outcome
Where eDesk is a step down from Zoho Desk
- Built for ecommerce, so an odd fit for software or services support
- Per-user prices rise with the plan and store count
- Prices not confirmed here
- Narrower than Zoho Desk for general customer service
Standout against Zoho Desk. It puts Amazon, eBay and webshop messages in one inbox next to order data.
- Which law reaches it. EU (Denmark). Zoho Desk is operated from India, outside the EU and without an adequacy decision, so transfers rest on contractual safeguards rather than on the data staying inside the EEA.
- Where the data sits. EU customers: Amazon Web Services in Ireland, daily backup elsewhere in Europe; the privacy policy says other customers' data may be stored in the US.
- Source code. Closed source, as Zoho Desk is.
Best for: Larger service teams at consumer brands that need phone, chat, email and AI in one place
Dixa ApS (company no. 36561009) of Copenhagen is the contracting party in its terms of service when no order form applies. We did not find the governing law in the terms we read, so confirm it on your order form.
Its pricing page lists Growth at €89, Ultimate at €139 and Prime at €179 per agent per month, each including a contact centre across phone, email, chat and social, a knowledge base, an AI agent called Mim and intelligent routing. Higher tiers add skills-based routing, SSO and custom roles.
What Dixa does better than Zoho Desk
- Phone, chat, email and social with routing, IVR and call recording in the entry plan
- Danish company with a named contracting entity
- AI agent included in every plan
- Native Shopify and Klaviyo integrations
Where Dixa is a step down from Zoho Desk
- Starts at €89 per agent, far above Zoho Desk's lowest tiers
- Aimed at consumer brands, by its own site
- No free plan or self-service trial on the pages we read
- Governing law not found
Standout against Zoho Desk. Contact centre telephony, routing and AI come in every plan, not as add-ons.
What actually breaks when you switch
The hard part of leaving Zoho Desk is the history and the glue, not the tickets themselves. Export tickets, contacts and knowledge articles, and list every integration or automation that touches other Zoho apps. Rebuild the automations first, because they carry your service levels.
Check the limits on the plan you need. Zammad Starter allows 5 agents, Teamwork Desk Starter 10, Trengo's lower plans cap conversations per year, and Crisp's free plan has 2 seats. Self-hosted tools remove the agent cap and add an admin job.
Ask each vendor for the contracting entity, governing law and data region in writing. For Dixa, Omnidesk, OTOBO and Znuny we could not confirm the law, and for several others we did not verify hosting locations.
Is there a European helpdesk that works like Zoho Desk?
Zammad is the closest in shape: tickets from email, web forms, chat, Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook on higher plans, SLAs, a knowledge base, triggers and reporting. Omnidesk, Crisp and Trengo cover the shared-inbox side with chat and WhatsApp.
None bundles a wider business suite the way Zoho does. If your team relies on Zoho CRM or other Zoho apps, check how a European helpdesk will connect to them.
Which of these has a free option?
Crisp has a free plan with 2 seats. Zammad, Plain, Trengo and Teamwork Desk offer free trials, and Teamwork Desk says no credit card is needed to start. OTOBO and Znuny are open source and license-free, with the cost in running them.
Zoho Desk itself has a free edition for 3 users with limited features, so a free start is not unique to Zoho.
Which can I host myself?
Zammad, OTOBO and Znuny are open-source and can be run on your own servers or any cloud. SupportPal is a self-hosted licence. Zammad also offers hosting in German data centres, and OTOBO sells managed services.
Self-hosting gives you control of the location, but you take on updates, backups and security patches unless you buy support.
Does the vendor being European mean my data stays in Europe?
Not by itself. Zammad hosts in German data centres, and Omnidesk says its servers are in Amsterdam and Alblasserdam. Trengo's privacy statement says personal data may be provided to parties outside the EEA. For Crisp, Plain, eDesk and Dixa we did not verify hosting locations.
Ask each vendor for the data region and the sub-processor list in writing before you sign.
Which one to pick
If you want the closest all-round replacement, with a full ticket system, German hosting, public prices and an open-source core, Zammad is the one. If you want a free start with chat and a shared inbox, Crisp. If WhatsApp is your main channel, Trengo.
If you have IT staff and want no per-agent fee, OTOBO, Znuny or the SupportPal licence let you host it yourself. For B2B software support in Slack, Plain; for an ecommerce shop on marketplaces, eDesk; for tickets that turn into project work, Teamwork Desk; for a consumer-brand contact centre, Dixa. Omnidesk suits a team that wants named Dutch hosting.
Be realistic about the gap. Zoho Desk comes with a free edition for 3 users and links to the other Zoho apps, which no European tool here matches. Switch if you want the vendor itself to be European, not only the invoice, and keep Zoho Desk if your team lives inside the Zoho suite.
Frequently Asked Questions
Zammad is the best all-round answer on this page because it combines a full ticketing feature set, German hosting, an open-source core, public prices and a free trial. Crisp suits a small team that wants a free start with chat, Trengo suits a WhatsApp-heavy team, and the self-hosted tools suit teams with their own IT.

Zammad, OTOBO and Znuny. OTOBO describes itself as 100% open source and license-free, and Znuny as open source and free. Zammad also sells hosted plans, OTOBO sells services and managed hosting, and Znuny offers add-ons and demos.
eDesk, a Dublin company, is built for it. Its site lists Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Mirakl, Shopify and more than 300 integrations, with an AI agent. Trengo also targets ecommerce brands with a WhatsApp inbox. Prices for eDesk were not quoted here because the currency shown could not be confirmed.
Plain. Its terms are with Not Just Tickets Ltd in England under the law of England and Wales, and its site lists Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, email and in-app channels, plus Linear and Jira integrations. It is built for B2B teams, and its channel list does not include phone.
Their terms are with US companies: Chatwoot, Inc., Tidio LLC of California and Deskpro, Inc., a Delaware corporation. The tools on this page have a contracting company in the EU, the UK or Switzerland that we checked in a register or in the company's own terms.
