European SMS Marketing Software

SMS marketing software sends promotional texts, cart reminders and loyalty offers to customers who opted in, and a phone number is among the most personal identifiers a shop holds. These European alternatives to Attentive run on providers that contract under EU, UK or Swiss law, so consent records, number lists and message logs sit with a vendor your data protection officer can audit under local rules.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect the order in which tools appear; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Omnisend from Lithuania ranks first among the European SMS marketing tools here because it is the only one built around a webshop: SMS sits next to email and web push in one flow, and the vendor prices SMS from $0.007 per message.
  • Brevo in Paris and Sender.net in Vilnius are email platforms that added SMS, while smsmode, SMSAPI, Spryng, Esendex, GatewayAPI, Mitto, eCall and seven started as messaging gateways and added campaign screens afterwards.
  • Hosting is named unevenly: smsmode states data centres in Marseille and Paris, Spryng states virtual private clouds in Frankfurt, eCall states data centres in Switzerland, and GatewayAPI offers a separate EU setup on Hetzner in Germany.
  • Esendex and Textmagic are British and Mitto and eCall are Swiss, so four of the twelve sit outside the EU under adequacy decisions, which a buyer with a strict EU-only rule has to count.
  • Only a few of these tools publish a usable price before a conversation: Esendex lists plans from £54 a month, Textmagic charges $0.049 per SMS, seven charges €0.075 and Spryng shows €0.07 for the Netherlands, while Attentive, the US benchmark, sells by quote after a demo.

European SMS marketing software is the tooling a shop or service business uses to send opted-in promotional texts, cart reminders and loyalty offers from a provider established in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, which matters because a mobile number tied to a consent record is personal data that a processor under European law has to handle by European rules.

#1 Omnisend

Vilnius, Lithuania Founded 2014 Free plan (500 emails, 250 contacts, 500 web push notifications/month, no card); Standard from $11.20/month; Pro from $41.30/month, both with unlimited web push; Custom pricing above 150,000 contacts Demo on request

Best for: Online shops that want cart-recovery texts, email and web push in one Lithuanian platform

  • Operating company. Omnisend UAB (legal entity code 302530363)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Lithuania)
  • Where the data sits. Google Cloud Platform; no region named in the Data Processing Agreement
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Klaviyo, Mailchimp, PushEngage

Omnisend is the one tool in this ranking designed around a webshop rather than around a message pipe. SMS arrives as a channel inside the same automation builder as email and web push, connected through the Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce or Shoplazza integration, and the category page lists cart recovery by SMS, quiet hours and frequency caps. Against Attentive, which is also built for shops, that makes it the closest like-for-like in structure.

The company is Omnisend UAB in Vilnius, legal entity code 302530363, and the product began in 2014 as Soundest, an email tool, before the 2017 rebrand as SMS and push were added. A permanent free plan and paid tiers from $11.20 a month are published, and the vendor states SMS from $0.007 per message. The gaps are disclosure ones: Google Cloud Platform is named but no region, and no security certification is claimed on the public site.

What Omnisend does well

  • Web push included and unlimited on every paid plan
  • Permanent free plan: 500 push notifications, 250 contacts, no card
  • Clear published pricing from $11.20/month
  • Lithuanian company with a published legal entity code
  • Installs through the same flow as email and SMS

Where Omnisend falls short

  • No region named for its Google Cloud Platform hosting
  • No security certification published
  • Web push only, no native iOS or Android app SDK
  • Not available for Wix stores
  • Push is a feature of an email/SMS platform, not a dedicated push product

Standout feature. Omnisend puts SMS, email and web push in one store-connected flow with a published free plan, which no gateway-style tool here does.

#2 Brevo

Paris, France Founded 2012 Free tier / From €19/month Demo on request

Best for: SMBs needing multi-channel marketing

  • Operating company. Brevo
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Mailchimp, HubSpot

Brevo, the Paris company formerly called Sendinblue, uses SMS as one step inside a wider workflow. Its tool page describes a cart sequence that starts with an email, adds an SMS two hours later if the mail was not opened, and sends a WhatsApp message the next day. For a business that wants SMS to respond to behaviour rather than to run as a separate blast, this is the clearest example in the list.

The founding year is 2012, the founder is named as Armand Thiberge, and the rebrand to Brevo happened in May 2023. The vendor claims more than 500,000 businesses use it. Pricing is by emails sent, so contacts are unlimited, with a free plan of 300 emails a day. Two cautions: SMS credits are bought per destination, and the site's own pages quote different entry prices for paid plans, so confirm the figure on the live pricing page.

What Brevo does well

  • Priced per email sent, so unlimited contacts cost nothing to store
  • Free plan with unlimited contacts and 300 emails/day
  • SMS and WhatsApp orchestrated alongside email in one workflow
  • CRM, sales pipeline and transactional SMTP in the same platform
  • French company with EU processing, no transfer assessment needed

Where Brevo falls short

  • Per-email pricing is worse for small lists mailed very frequently
  • Automation and A/B testing need the Business tier
  • Email builder less refined than MailerLite's
  • Breadth means more configuration before it is useful

Standout feature. Brevo lets one workflow mix email, SMS and WhatsApp steps and bills by emails sent, so the size of the contact list does not set the price.

#3 smsmode

Marseille, France Subscriptions Basic €9, Classic €69, Medium €159 and Premium €499 per month excl. VAT, with messages billed on consumption; prepaid packs from 1,000 SMS Demo on request

Best for: French and southern European senders that want a campaign web app, RCS and a named hosting location

  • Operating company. Calade Technologies (smsmode)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France)
  • Where the data sits. Two ISO 27001 certified data centres, Interxion MRS1 in Marseille and Scaleway DC4 in Paris, data stored in France; HDS-certified host as an option
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Attentive, Postscript, Twilio

smsmode is the trading name of Calade Technologies, a French SARL in Marseille whose legal notice gives a SIRET number. Where Attentive sells a retention suite, smsmode sells a messaging platform with campaign screens: upload a list, personalise, send or schedule, and run RCS, WhatsApp Business or text-to-speech voice from the same account. Automatic workflow messages such as welcome texts and review requests are described too.

The strongest point is the hosting statement: two ISO 27001 certified data centres, Interxion MRS1 in Marseille and Scaleway DC4 in Paris, with an HDS-certified option for health data. Plugins cover HubSpot, Salesforce, Klaviyo and Zapier. The price is a subscription of €9, €69, €159 or €499 a month plus consumption, phone support only from the Classic plan, and RCS and WhatsApp cannot be bought prepaid.

What smsmode does well

  • Names its data centres in Marseille and Paris
  • Plans start at €9 a month
  • Campaign web app plus REST API and SMPP
  • RCS and WhatsApp Business in the same account
  • Plugins for HubSpot, Salesforce and Klaviyo

Where smsmode falls short

  • Messages are billed per destination on top of the subscription
  • Phone support only from the Classic plan
  • No storefront app confirmed on the pages we read
  • RCS and WhatsApp not available as prepaid

Standout feature. smsmode names both of its French data centres and offers an HDS-certified host, a level of hosting detail few SMS vendors publish.

#4 SMSAPI

Gliwice, Poland Founded 2007 Pay as you go, no set-up fee and no contract, minimum payment €30, rates per destination country; free trial credit without a card Demo on request

Best for: Polish and central European senders that want pay-as-you-go bulk SMS without a contract

  • Operating company. LINK Mobility Poland Sp. z o.o. (SMSAPI)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Poland)
  • Where the data sits. Two redundant server centres, ATMAN and T-Mobile, more than 150 km apart; the safety page does not state the country
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Attentive, Postscript, Twilio

SMSAPI is the SMS brand of LINK Mobility Poland in Gliwice, a subsidiary of a group listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange, which makes the contracting entity Polish and the group European. The product dates from 2007, when it grew out of a Polish ecommerce system, and it still reads like a gateway: customer portal, REST API, HLR number checks, short links with click analytics and sender names.

Two-way messaging works through receiving numbers in 9-digit or 4-5 digit format, while a text-based sender name cannot receive replies. Billing is pay as you go with a €30 minimum payment, no contract and no set-up fee, and the site says more than 200 systems are integrated. ISO 27001 is stated. The limits are the two server centres, ATMAN and T-Mobile, whose country is not given, and the lack of any email channel.

What SMSAPI does well

  • No contract and no set-up fee
  • Free test SMS without a card
  • Short links with click analytics
  • Two-way SMS with receiving numbers
  • ISO 27001 certificate

Where SMSAPI falls short

  • No email channel in the same account
  • Server centre country not stated on the safety page
  • Prices differ by destination, so budgets need the list
  • Retention flows depend on external integrations

Standout feature. SMSAPI needs no contract and no set-up fee, only a €30 minimum payment, which makes it the lowest-commitment way to test European SMS here.

#5 Spryng

Amsterdam, Netherlands Founded 2006 Indicative €0.07 per SMS to the Netherlands and €0.069 to Belgium and Germany, purchases from 100 SMS, no start-up or monthly costs; volume prices on request Demo on request

Best for: Dutch and Belgian shops, healthcare and logistics senders that want SMS, WhatsApp and RCS from one Dutch provider

  • Operating company. Spryng B.V.
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Netherlands)
  • Where the data sits. Private clouds inside the EU; the security page states the virtual private clouds are in Frankfurt
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Attentive, Postscript, Twilio

Spryng started in 2006 selling appointment-reminder texts to hospitals, and that healthcare origin explains its security profile: ISO 27001 and NEN 7510, the Dutch health information standard. Spryng B.V. is the contracting entity in Amsterdam, and the terms place it in the Commify Group. Marketing is a newer layer, a Campaigns module for SMS, WhatsApp and RCS that the marketing page describes only briefly.

The security page states that its virtual private clouds are in Frankfurt and promises 99.9 percent uptime. Indicative prices are €0.07 per SMS to the Netherlands and €0.069 to Belgium and Germany, bought from 100 SMS with no monthly cost, and payment by iDEAL is possible. Support runs 24/7 in four languages. Elsewhere prices come by quote, the site is Dutch first, and there is no email channel in the account.

What Spryng does well

  • ISO 27001 and NEN 7510 certified
  • Campaigns module for SMS, WhatsApp and RCS
  • No start-up or monthly costs
  • 24/7 support in four languages
  • Meta BSP and Google RCS partner status

Where Spryng falls short

  • Prices shown only for NL, BE and DE
  • Campaigns module is new and briefly described
  • No email channel in the same account
  • Site is Dutch first

Standout feature. Spryng pairs a stated Frankfurt hosting location with the NEN 7510 healthcare standard, which suits senders of appointment and care messages.

#6 Esendex

Nottingham, United Kingdom Founded 2001 SMS plans: Starter £54/month (500 messages), Growth £143/month (2,500 messages), Enterprise £468/month (10,000 messages), all including API access; WhatsApp, RCS, voice and email quoted separately on request Demo on request

Best for: UK senders that want printed monthly SMS plans with API access included

  • Operating company. Commify UK Limited (trading as Esendex)
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Twilio, Vonage

Esendex has run a messaging platform from Nottingham since 2001 and now trades under Commify UK Limited, registered in England and Wales under number 04217280. It is a British company, so it sits outside the EU and relies on the adequacy decision. The category page lists automation and surveys among its tools, and the vendor describes two-way messaging and one-time passcode support next to the sending.

What sets it apart from the other gateways is a printed price ladder: Starter at £54 a month for 500 messages, Growth at £143 for 2,500 and Enterprise at £468 for 10,000, each with API access. Past 10,000 messages, and for WhatsApp, RCS, voice and email, you ask for a quote. ISO 27001 is stated and a 7-day trial is offered. Being one brand of a multi-brand group means less product focus than a single-product vendor has.

What Esendex does well

  • Published tiered SMS pricing including API access
  • Multichannel API: SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, voice, email
  • ISO 27001 accreditation
  • 7-day free trial, no commitment
  • OTP and two-way messaging support

Where Esendex falls short

  • United Kingdom sits outside the EU (adequacy decision)
  • WhatsApp, RCS, voice and email pricing is custom
  • Part of a multi-brand group (Commify), not a single-product focus
  • Enterprise tier still requires a sales conversation past 10,000 messages

Standout feature. Esendex prints three SMS tiers with API access in every one, so a UK sender can budget before contacting sales.

#7 GatewayAPI

Odense, Denmark Founded 2003 By default you pay only for the traffic you send, with no subscriptions or monthly fees (except in countries that require a short code). Prices are per operator in the chosen country, shown in EUR by default (DKK selectable for RCS). RCS from EUR 0.0410 per message. Email pricing is not shown on the pricing page. Creating an account is free. Exact per-country SMS rates are in a downloadable price list or on request. Demo on request

Best for: Developers and shops that want a Danish API with a separate EU-only setup and no subscription

  • Operating company. ONLINECITY.IO ApS (CVR 27364276)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Denmark)
  • Where the data sits. Two completely separated setups. The EU setup (gatewayapi.eu, chosen at signup) runs in a Hetzner Online GmbH data center in Germany, which the vendor says is EU-owned. The vendor also states that the global (.com) setup is hosted at Google Cloud data centers in Europe, and that the EU setup uses data centers in Denmark and Germany with ownership and routing kept in the EU; it describes both setups as ISAE 3000 and ISAE 3402 audited.
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Twilio, Vonage, MessageBird

GatewayAPI is run by ONLINECITY.IO ApS in Odense, Denmark, CVR 27364276, and covers SMS, RCS business messages and email through one API, with HLR lookup, virtual numbers, short codes and keywords. The scope is narrower than a large CPaaS, since no voice, video or WhatsApp is listed. The category page names cart-recovery SMS as a use case, which it supports through the API rather than through a store plugin.

The distinguishing choice comes at signup. The gatewayapi.eu setup is separate and, according to the vendor, runs in a Hetzner data center in Germany owned by an EU company, while the .com setup runs on Google Cloud in Europe without that ownership and routing guarantee. Billing is for traffic only, per operator in the destination country, in euros; RCS starts at EUR 0.0410 per message. Country SMS prices come in a download or on request, and short codes cost extra.

What GatewayAPI does well

  • Danish contracting entity (ONLINECITY.IO ApS) under Danish law
  • Separate EU setup on Hetzner, selectable at signup
  • No subscription or monthly fee by default
  • SMS, RCS and email in one API, plus HLR lookup
  • Free account, pay only for traffic sent

Where GatewayAPI falls short

  • No voice, video or WhatsApp listed, unlike the larger CPaaS tools
  • Per-country SMS prices not visible on the server-rendered pricing page
  • Global setup hosting not documented on the pages checked
  • Short codes and virtual numbers are charged separately

Standout feature. GatewayAPI lets you choose at signup between two fully separated setups, one of them kept under EU ownership and routing.

#8 Textmagic

Romford, United Kingdom Prepaid credit, standard rate $0.049 per SMS (160 characters); $0.01 per SMS when routing through a connected CPaaS account (Twilio, Vonage, Sinch, Bandwidth); virtual numbers $10/number/month; credit bundles from 20 to 10,000 units Demo on request

Best for: Small teams that want prepaid business texting with a flat per-SMS rate and a shared inbox

  • Operating company. Textmagic Limited
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Twilio SMS, EZ Texting

Textmagic is a British business-texting tool from Textmagic Limited in Romford, company number 05286521, and it behaves more like an SMS inbox with an API than like a marketing suite. Prepaid credit is the model: bundles from 20 to 10,000 units, a standard rate of $0.049 per SMS, and $0.01 per SMS when messages are routed through a connected Twilio, Vonage, Sinch or Bandwidth account underneath.

The category page credits it with automation flows and sender-ID and consent tools. Virtual numbers cost $10 a month, and two-way SMS sits alongside email and a live chat and social inbox. SOC 2 Type II is stated. Its US-style registration features, such as 10DLC, hint at an American focus, there is no RCS or voice API of its own, and as a UK company it sits outside the EU under an adequacy decision.

What Textmagic does well

  • Published flat rate: $0.049 per SMS, no quote needed
  • Prepaid credit with no subscription commitment
  • SOC 2 Type II certified
  • Two-way SMS plus email and chat inbox
  • Free test balance before buying credit

Where Textmagic falls short

  • United Kingdom sits outside the EU (adequacy decision)
  • No RCS or dedicated voice API
  • No omnichannel or contact-centre platform layer
  • US 10DLC/compliance features suggest a US-market bias

Standout feature. Textmagic can drop to $0.01 per SMS when it routes through a carrier account you already hold with a CPaaS vendor.

#9 Mitto

Zug, Switzerland Founded 2013 Pay-as-you-go per-message rates for SMS, WhatsApp, Viber and Voice via an online calculator (varies by country and currency); volume discounts and custom plans on request Demo on request

Best for: Swiss and international senders that want SMS, WhatsApp and Viber campaigns with failover and a per-country rate calculator

  • Operating company. Mitto AG
  • Jurisdiction. Switzerland (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Twilio, Sinch

Mitto AG in Zug has operated since 2013 as a Swiss communications platform. For marketing, the category page lists a no-code campaign creator, SMS failover and scheduling with statistics, with failover to SMS. Behind it sit SMS, WhatsApp Business, RCS, Viber, Telegram, Messenger, Instagram and voice behind one API, plus number lookup and identity verification.

Its pricing page carries a live calculator that shows per-message rates for SMS, WhatsApp, Viber and voice by country and currency without an account. RCS, large volumes and custom plans still go through a conversation. ISO 27001 is stated, no data residency location is published, and Switzerland sits outside the EU and EEA under an adequacy decision. The contact-centre and chatbot depth of larger CPaaS vendors is absent.

What Mitto does well

  • Live per-country pricing calculator, no account needed
  • SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, Viber, Telegram and voice in one API
  • Number lookup and identity verification included
  • ISO 27001 certified
  • Self-serve trial alongside a custom enterprise plan

Where Mitto falls short

  • Switzerland sits outside the EU and EEA (adequacy decision)
  • RCS and volume pricing still needs a sales conversation
  • Thinner contact-centre and chatbot layer than Infobip
  • No published data residency location

Standout feature. Mitto shows per-country rates for several channels in a public calculator, with no account needed.

#10 eCall

Wollerau, Switzerland Business (postpaid, per usage) and Prepaid (points) models; detailed price lists in CHF and EUR on the vendor site; start credit for testing Demo on request

Best for: Swiss companies that want SMS and WhatsApp from a Swiss provider with data kept in Switzerland

  • Operating company. F24 Schweiz AG (eCall)
  • Jurisdiction. Switzerland (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Redundant data centres in Switzerland
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Attentive, Twilio

eCall is operated by F24 Schweiz AG in Wollerau, whose imprint lists the Zefix company index and names F24 AG in Munich as the German parent. The vendor says it was the first Swiss cloud service for sending and receiving SMS and claims about 30 years on the Swiss market. Marketing is one use among many next to reminders, codes and alerts, and campaign building is delegated to SMSup, a subsidiary in Fribourg.

In the portal you send, schedule and set up standing orders, and the vendor suggests a free automated birthday SMS as an example. Business accounts add five interfaces, including SMPP and REST, with prioritised sending and custom sender names. Besides SMS it handles WhatsApp Business, RCS, voice and Threema. Data centres in Switzerland and ISO/IEC 27001 are stated. Prices live in separate CHF and EUR lists, and the site is German first.

What eCall does well

  • Data centres in Switzerland
  • Standing orders for recurring texts
  • Five interfaces including SMPP and REST
  • Covers WhatsApp, RCS, voice and Threema
  • ISO/IEC 27001 certified

Where eCall falls short

  • Campaign builder sits in the separate SMSup service
  • No shop-platform flows confirmed
  • Prices in separate price lists, quote for volume
  • German-first site

Standout feature. eCall reaches recipients through Threema as well as SMS and WhatsApp, which matters for Swiss audiences.

#11 seven (sms77)

Kiel, Germany Founded 2003 From €0.075/SMS Demo on request

Best for: Developers needing simple SMS integration

  • Operating company. seven (sms77)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Twilio SMS, Nexmo

seven, which traded as sms77 until the rebrand, is a German gateway founded in 2003 in Hamburg and now headquartered in Kiel. Against the platform tools on this list it is the plainest: a REST API, a web app, voice with text-to-speech, number lookup and validation before you pay to send, webhooks and a sandbox. The category page adds two-way SMS and email to SMS.

Published pricing starts at €0.075 per SMS, with volume discounts, and integrations include Zapier, Make and n8n. There is no WhatsApp, RCS or other messaging-app channel, no campaign tooling beyond the web app, and the focus is on Germany and the DACH region rather than worldwide delivery. The vendor offers data processing agreements, and a Kiel head office puts it under German law.

What seven (sms77) does well

  • Published pricing at €0.075 per SMS
  • SMS and voice APIs with webhooks and two-way messaging
  • Number lookup and validation before you pay to send
  • Developer-oriented documentation and integrations
  • German company, GDPR processing

Where seven (sms77) falls short

  • No WhatsApp, RCS or omnichannel channels
  • No contact centre or campaign tooling
  • Route management below the enterprise platforms
  • Not aimed at global high-volume enterprise messaging

Standout feature. seven validates numbers through a lookup API before you send, which removes undeliverable messages from a large list.

#12 Sender.net

Vilnius, Lithuania Free Forever: 2,500 subscribers, 15,000 emails/month / Standard from $6.30/month (500 subscribers, billed annually) / Professional from $10.50/month / Enterprise on request Demo on request

Best for: Small senders on a tight budget that already use or want a free email platform and need occasional SMS

  • Operating company. UAB Sender.lt

Sender.net is a Lithuanian email platform from UAB Sender.lt in Vilnius, and SMS is the weakest part of its profile. The site's own page says SMS is bundled into the paid tiers rather than sold separately, and the vendor's SMS guide is the evidence for it; we did not verify SMS pricing or country coverage. Treat it as an email tool that also texts, ranked last for that reason.

The case for it is the free tier. Free Forever covers 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails a month with the editor and automations, and paid plans start at $6.30 a month for Standard and $10.50 for Professional, quoted in dollars. WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify integrations are built in. The entity name appears only on the legal pages, and the depth of features trails Brevo at the top end.

What Sender.net does well

  • Free-forever plan covers 2,500 subscribers, far above MailerLite's 500
  • Drag-and-drop editor and automation included on the free tier
  • WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify integrations built in
  • Lithuanian company, EU jurisdiction
  • Affordable paid tiers once the free plan is outgrown

Where Sender.net falls short

  • No paid memberships or paywall
  • Prices quoted in dollars despite the EU base
  • Company entity named only in the legal pages, not the marketing site
  • Smaller feature depth than Brevo or GetResponse at the top end

Standout feature. Sender.net gives 2,500 subscribers a free plan with automations, a free list five times the size of the 500-subscriber free tier of MailerLite, cited on its tool page.

Should I pick an email platform with SMS or a dedicated SMS provider?

Start from where your audience already lives. If the customer list, the segments and the order history sit in an email platform, Omnisend, Brevo or Sender.net let you add a text step to an existing flow, so a cart reminder can go out by email first and by SMS two hours later. Brevo describes exactly that sequence, with a WhatsApp message the next day, inside one workflow builder.

If the shop platform or CRM already holds the audience and you only need a sender with campaign screens, the messaging-first providers are the tighter fit. smsmode ships plugins for HubSpot, Salesforce and Klaviyo, SMSAPI lists more than 200 integrated systems according to its site, and Mitto adds a no-code campaign creator with SMS failover. The cost of that route is that consent records and segments live in the other system, so the integration has to be reliable.

The third case is the developer who triggers texts from an own application. GatewayAPI, seven and SMSAPI expose APIs first, and a campaign web app is a convenience rather than the product.

How do the pricing models differ, and what is hard to compare?

Four models appear. Subscription plus usage: smsmode charges €9, €69, €159 or €499 a month and bills messages on consumption on top. Bundled monthly SMS: Esendex lists Starter at £54 for 500 messages, Growth at £143 for 2,500 and Enterprise at £468 for 10,000, API access included.

Pure pay as you go: SMSAPI asks for a €30 minimum payment with no contract, GatewayAPI has no subscription by default, and Spryng sells credits from 100 SMS at an indicative €0.07 for the Netherlands. Prepaid flat rate: Textmagic charges $0.049 per SMS and seven charges €0.075.

Two things make comparison harder than the list prices suggest. Most prices are per destination country, so a rate for the Netherlands says little about a campaign to Poland and Sweden.

And the platform tools price by list: Omnisend starts with a free plan and charges for contacts, while Brevo prices by emails sent and gives unlimited contacts on the free plan with 300 emails a day. The site's own Brevo texts quote different entry prices for paid plans, so check the live pricing page.

Attentive prices by messages, list size, channels and AI tools, and its pricing page points to a demo rather than a table. A fair comparison therefore needs your own send volume per country as the first input.

Does a European vendor mean the data stays in Europe?

The contract does, the servers sometimes. Every vendor here contracts with a company established in the EU, the UK or Switzerland, but the hosting statements vary. smsmode names Interxion MRS1 in Marseille and Scaleway DC4 in Paris. Spryng states Frankfurt. eCall states redundant Swiss data centres. GatewayAPI separates a gatewayapi.eu setup on Hetzner in Germany from a .com setup on Google Cloud in Europe, and tells you to read the terms before putting personal data on the second.

Others are silent. Omnisend names Google Cloud Platform without a region, SMSAPI names two server centres, ATMAN and T-Mobile, without a country, and Esendex, Textmagic, Mitto and seven publish no residency location on the pages we checked. Silence is not a failure, but it is a question for the data processing agreement.

Brevo is a mixed case: the site describes European processing, and the company lists sub-processors, so the agreement is where to confirm which services run where.

What consent rules apply to marketing texts in Europe?

Marketing texts need prior opt-in, and each vendor that addresses it says so. SMSAPI states that recipients must consent to processing for marketing and links a consent template. smsmode adds a French detail: marketing texts carry a STOP mention and fall under CNIL time-of-day limits, while transactional texts triggered by a customer action are exempt from those hours. Textmagic lists sender-ID and consent tools among its features.

This differs from the US setup Attentive was designed around, where its pricing page advertises built-in TCPA tools. TCPA is a US statute and does not map onto GDPR, the ePrivacy rules or the national hour limits, so a list imported from an American program does not arrive with a usable European consent record.

In practice, keep proof of opt-in with timestamp and source wording next to the number, and check that the tool can export it. A vendor that cannot show who agreed to what leaves the liability with you.

How hard is it to move from Attentive to one of these tools?

The contact export is the easy part. The parts that take time are the journeys, the sign-up units on the site and the sender identity. Attentive sells a two-tap sign-up, pre-built cross-channel journeys and more than 100 integrations according to its home page, and none of that moves as a file. Expect to rebuild each welcome, abandonment and win-back flow in the new tool.

Omnisend and Brevo are the closest in shape because flows, forms and segments are native. With smsmode, SMSAPI, Spryng or seven, the flow logic moves into your shop platform or CRM, and the SMS provider becomes the sender. That works well when a team already runs automation elsewhere and badly when Attentive was the automation.

Plan a period in which both run side by side, and re-collect consent where the old record does not show source and wording. Sender names and short codes also have to be set up again in the new account.

When is it not worth leaving Attentive?

When the audience is mostly American and the program depends on US-specific machinery. Attentive lists 20-plus countries on its site, built-in TCPA compliance, a dedicated team with 24/5 service and AI products for send-time and list growth. A European tool will not match that stack for a US-centred store.

It is also worth staying when the program is large and the revenue case is documented. Replacing a working flow set costs weeks of rebuild and a dip while consent is re-collected. If the only motive is the jurisdiction of the contract, a data processing agreement and the Data Privacy Framework certification the company states in its privacy policy may already satisfy your officer.

Leave when the contract is the problem, when the list is European, or when you pay for channels and AI tools you do not use. The European tools here are cheaper to start, but they ask you to do more assembly yourself.

How we selected and ranked these 12 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

Omnisend from Lithuania holds the first place in this directory because it joins SMS, email and web push for online shops, with cart recovery, quiet hours and frequency caps listed on its page.

Brevo from France is the better pick if you want SMS and WhatsApp inside a wider workflow builder with a free plan. smsmode and SMSAPI suit teams that want a messaging provider with plugins or pay-as-you-go billing, and Spryng, eCall and GatewayAPI stand out for stated hosting in Frankfurt, Switzerland and a separate EU setup.

Yes, though none copies its full retention suite. Omnisend is the closest for ecommerce, because audience, flows and SMS live in one tool. Brevo covers SMS and WhatsApp in workflows. The gateways, namely smsmode, SMSAPI, Spryng, Esendex, GatewayAPI, Mitto, eCall and seven, cover the sending side and rely on a shop or CRM for segmentation. Attentive is a New York company, and its privacy policy states it relies on the Data Privacy Framework for personal data from Europe.

Omnisend has a permanent free plan of 500 emails, 250 contacts and 500 web push notifications a month, and Brevo offers a free plan with unlimited contacts and 300 emails a day. Sender.net has a free-forever plan for 2,500 subscribers, though its SMS sits in the paid tiers according to the site. Esendex offers a 7-day trial, SMSAPI gives free trial credit without a card, Textmagic gives a free test balance, and Mitto offers a self-serve trial.

Esendex (Commify UK Limited, Nottingham) and Textmagic (Textmagic Limited, Romford) are British, and Mitto (Zug) and eCall (Wollerau) are Swiss. All four are covered by EU adequacy decisions, so transfers need no extra mechanism, but they are not EU companies. If your policy requires EU or EEA establishment, choose among Omnisend, Brevo, smsmode, SMSAPI, Spryng, GatewayAPI, seven and Sender.net.

smsmode names Interxion MRS1 in Marseille and Scaleway DC4 in Paris, with an HDS-certified option. Spryng states virtual private clouds in Frankfurt. eCall states redundant data centres in Switzerland. GatewayAPI states that its EU setup runs in a Hetzner data center in Germany. Omnisend names Google Cloud Platform without a region, and SMSAPI names two server centres without a country.

SMSAPI, Spryng, smsmode, Esendex, Mitto and eCall state ISO 27001 on their own pages, and Spryng adds NEN 7510, the Dutch healthcare standard. Textmagic states SOC 2 Type II. GatewayAPI describes ISAE 3000 and ISAE 3402 audits. Omnisend publishes no security certification on the pages checked.
