European Alternatives to Instacart

Looking for a European alternative to Instacart? Instacart is the trading name of Maplebear Inc., a Delaware corporation, and its terms of service cover services offered to customers in the United States and Canada. The terms include a section on an arbitration agreement and a section on the Instacart+ membership, and the home page advertised 40% off (up to $15) on the first two orders in 14 days.

The European grocery delivery services below deliver in the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the UK, France and Romania, are run by European companies and show their prices in euros, kroner, korunas, forints or pounds where the pages state them.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects which tools are listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Instacart is the trading name of Maplebear Inc., a Delaware corporation, and its consumer terms of service cover customers in the United States and Canada.
  • Picnic and Knuspr both state free delivery on their home pages, and Oda and Mathem give new customers three months of free delivery.
  • Rohlik, Kifli and Bringo promise delivery within 90, 90 and 120 minutes, which is the closest European match to on-demand shopping.
  • Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Auchan sell their store range online, and Auchan adds drive and click and collect.
  • Bringo in Romania is the only service on this page where a courier shops in partner stores such as Carrefour, dm and Sensiblu, as Instacart shoppers do.

Why people leave Instacart

Instacart is the grocery marketplace of Maplebear Inc., a Delaware corporation that trades as Instacart. Its home page describes grocery delivery or pickup from local stores, so the customer chooses a store and a shopper fills the basket there. The model suits a country where one app can sit on top of many retailers, and that is the part European services copy least.

The first reason Europeans look elsewhere is plain geography. The consumer terms of service, last updated on 7 May 2026, apply to customers in the United States and Canada. A household in Utrecht, Leipzig or Gothenburg cannot sign up for the consumer service, so the question is not whether to leave Instacart but which local service to use instead.

The second reason is the contract. The terms carry an arbitration agreement and class action waiver for US residents, a 60-day informal dispute step before any claim, and an Instacart+ membership section. The privacy policy has its own chapter on cross-border transfers. European services work under European consumer law and a European data controller, which is a different starting point.

  • The consumer service is not offered in Europe Instacart's terms of service define the Services as those offered to customers in the United States and Canada. The European site at company.instacart.eu presents software for grocers, such as Storefront Pro, not a shopping app for households. Its newsroom lists Costco websites in France and Spain built on that technology, which are Costco storefronts, not Instacart. A European household has to pick a local grocer.
  • Disputes run through arbitration, not a local court The terms open with an arbitration agreement and class action waiver for US residents, and they require a 60-day informal dispute process before legal proceedings, except where the law forbids it. Those terms are written for American and Canadian consumers. A customer of Albert Heijn, Mathem or Auchan relies on Dutch, Swedish or French consumer law and can go to a court in their own country.
  • Membership refunds stop after five days Instacart+ has its own section in the terms. Annual memberships cancelled after the 5-day window are not refunded unless the law of the customer's jurisdiction requires it. Discounts on the home page are conditional too: 40% off up to $15 on two orders within 14 days, and 20% at Costco, all subject to terms. Several European services publish a flat rule instead, such as Rohlik's always-free-delivery banner.
  • Data flows are written for a US platform The privacy policy covers Maplebear Inc. and Maplebear Canada Inc. and has chapters on prescription deliveries, restaurant orders, cross-border transfers and state-specific disclosures for California, Nevada and Canada. A separate notice covers Washington health data. A Dutch, German or Hungarian grocer is bound by the GDPR directly, which gives a data subject a European supervisory authority to write to.

What you have to replace, not just match

Instacart is a marketplace, and no European service copies it completely. What you replace depends on how you used it. If you shopped in one chain through the app, the closest match is that chain's own web shop: Albert Heijn or Jumbo in the Netherlands, Auchan in France, Ocado in the United Kingdom. If you relied on a person walking the aisles for you, only Bringo in Romania works that way.

If you used Instacart for a full weekly basket, the warehouse services are the better fit. Picnic, Knuspr, Rohlik, Kifli, Mathem and Oda pick from their own stock and deliver in a slot, and they publish their own delivery rules. Crisp covers the Netherlands and Belgium with a Weekbox and orders for offices. Expect a narrower choice of stores and a wider choice of own-brand products.

Three things have no direct equivalent. Alcohol, pharmacy and restaurant orders are separate parts of the Instacart privacy policy, and the European grocers on this page do not list them as services. Gift cards are sold by Mathem. Instacart+ has no matching membership; the closest are the clubs and bundles that Rohlik, Kifli, Knuspr and Albert Heijn run.

How each alternative compares to Instacart

Picnic

the free-delivery milk-run alternative for Dutch, German and French households

Amsterdam, NetherlandsThe page states 'Altijd lage prijzen' and 'Altijd gratis bezorgd' (always free delivery). No price list is shown.#6 in Food Delivery Apps

Best for: Households in the Netherlands, Germany or France that order a weekly basket and want one stated delivery rule

Picnic Technologies B.V. in Amsterdam runs the service, with German customers served through Picnic GmbH and French customers through Picnic SA. The home page states "Altijd gratis bezorgd", always free delivery. Where Instacart sells you a store, Picnic sells you its own range, delivered by its own vehicles.

The range includes Picnic Kookt, a ready-meal line cooked in a kitchen in Amsterdam, and the home page says products are sourced directly from producers. Picnic lists no restaurants and no marketplace of third-party stores, so the comparison with Instacart holds only for groceries.

What Picnic does better than Instacart

  • Delivery is stated as free on the home page, where Instacart advertises conditional discounts
  • Operator, KvK number and VAT number are published for the Dutch company
  • Covers three European countries under one app
  • Own meal line cooked in Amsterdam, with no shopper in the middle

Where Picnic is a step down from Instacart

  • No choice of stores; the assortment is only what Picnic stocks
  • Delivery areas and slots are not given on the pages we read
  • Shareholders of the group are not named

Standout against Instacart. Picnic combines a stated free-delivery rule with operations in the Netherlands, Germany and France.

Knuspr

the German online supermarket with slots from three hours

Munich, GermanyThe page states free delivery ('Immer kostenlose Lieferung'), a first order without delivery cost and an Xtra membership. A basket comparison shows 66,93 EUR at Knuspr against 70,02 EUR at REWE and 69,70 EUR at EDEKA (everyday products, as of 28.10.26).#7 in Food Delivery Apps

Best for: German households that plan an order a few hours ahead and want an organic and own-brand range

Großer Kern GmbH in Munich, entered as HRB 256048 at the Amtsgericht München, operates Knuspr. The home page shows delivery from three hours and a free-delivery claim. Instacart can mean a shopper in a store within the hour, while Knuspr is a planned delivery from a central stock, closer to a weekly supermarket run.

The home page lists own brands, 10% off own brands and organic items, an Xtra membership shown at 32% savings and a section for rescued food. Knuspr also publishes a three-chain basket comparison dated 28 October 2026, which is its own claim and which we did not test.

  • Commercial register number and VAT ID are published for the German operator
  • Free delivery is stated on the home page
  • An organic range with a control number is shown
  • Own brands carry a stated 10% discount rather than a coupon with a cap

  • The delivery area appears only after an address search
  • The owner of Großer Kern GmbH is not stated on the pages we read

What actually breaks when you switch

Moving from Instacart to a European service means changing the unit of choice, not only the app. Instacart lets you pick a store and then a basket. The European warehouse services ask you to accept one assortment, one price list and one delivery slot, and the chains ask you to choose a store region by postcode. Your saved lists do not transfer, and no service on this page lists an import for Instacart orders.

Membership and promotions need a separate decision. If you pay for Instacart+, remember that the terms do not refund annual memberships cancelled after the 5-day window unless the law where you live requires it, so cancel before the renewal date. In Europe, free-delivery offers usually have a condition: Oda and Mathem require an order at least every second week, and Rohlik, Kifli and Knuspr point to club prices on top.

Last, read the data settings. Crisp, Albert Heijn and Jumbo describe advertising or group data sharing in their privacy texts, so open the cookie banner on the first visit. Hosting locations were not stated for any of these services, so do not assume data stays in a particular country. What changes with a European grocer is the controller, the governing law and the supervisory authority.

Can I use Instacart in Europe?

Not as a consumer. Instacart's terms of service apply to customers in the United States and Canada, and the privacy policy lists disclosures for residents of California, Nevada and Canada. The company site for Europe, company.instacart.eu, is aimed at grocers and retailers and describes enterprise software and retail media.

The practical route is a local service. Start from your postcode on Picnic, Knuspr, Rohlik, Mathem, Oda or Ocado, because each shows its delivery area only after an address check. Supermarket chains such as Albert Heijn, Jumbo and Auchan work from stores near you and give a wider choice of familiar brands.

Which European service is most like Instacart?

Bringo is the closest in method. Its couriers choose the products in partner stores such as Carrefour, dm and Sensiblu, customers follow the order in real time and can edit it while the courier shops. The catch is geography: Bringo serves Romanian cities and states a fixed delivery fee of 19.99 lei.

Most other services are closer to a supermarket than to a marketplace. Picnic, Knuspr, Rohlik and Kifli run their own warehouses and routes, so you get one assortment and one price list rather than a choice of stores. Ocado and Auchan fill orders from their own network under one retail brand.

Which one to pick

Pick by country first. Picnic suits Dutch households that want one delivery rule, Knuspr suits Germans who plan ahead, Oda and Mathem suit the Nordics, Rohlik and Kifli suit Czech and Hungarian cities, Ocado suits the United Kingdom and Auchan suits France. Within the Netherlands, Albert Heijn and Jumbo make sense if your local chain matters more than a delivery start-up.

Pick Bringo if what you want from Instacart is a person shopping in the stores you already use, and you live in Romania. Pick Crisp if a recurring box or an office order is the use case. Stay with Instacart if you live in the United States or Canada, because none of these European services deliver there.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the country. Picnic in the Netherlands and Knuspr in Germany both state free delivery. Oda serves Norway, Mathem Sweden, Rohlik the Czech Republic, Kifli Hungary, Ocado the United Kingdom and Auchan France. Bringo in Romania is the one that copies the courier-in-the-store model. Pick the service that delivers to your postcode first.

Yes, Bringo in Bucharest and other Romanian cities. Its couriers shop in partner stores such as Carrefour, dm and Sensiblu and deliver within 120 minutes, and customers can change the order while the courier is shopping. The other eleven services on this page pick from their own warehouses or stores through staff.

Picnic, Knuspr, Rohlik and Kifli show always-free delivery banners on their home pages. Oda and Mathem give free delivery for three months to new customers who order at least every second week. Bringo states a delivery fee of 19.99 lei. Fees at Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Auchan, Ocado and Crisp were not on the pages we read.

There is no one-for-one match. Jumbo sells a Rittenkaart with up to €8 extra discount on delivery, Albert Heijn offers a Premium Bezorgbundel, Knuspr and Rohlik run Xtra clubs, and Bringo has Bringo You. Conditions and prices of most of these were not on the pages we read, so check them for your own address.

Instacart's privacy policy covers its marketplace, white-label retailer apps, prescription deliveries and restaurant orders, so the range of data is wider because the service is wider. European grocers must follow the GDPR. Crisp and Albert Heijn still describe advertising partners in their policies, so read the cookie settings at any of them.
