How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects which tools are listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • IDEXX describes Cornerstone as integrated, server-based veterinary software, and IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. names Westbrook, Maine as its base in its terms of use.
  • Vetera and Oblon Vet are installed on the practice's own computers, so a clinic that wants to keep running its own server can leave Cornerstone without moving to the cloud.
  • Provet Cloud, inBehandlung, debevet, VetNative and vetpraxis.de are browser-based, and four of them publish a monthly price while Provet Cloud publishes dollar and pound prices.
  • inBehandlung names a Hetzner data centre in Germany for its customer data, and Vetera and Oblon Vet allow data to stay on the practice's own network.
  • Lab links need checking per device: inBehandlung orders from Laboklin, Antech and IDEXX, and VET7.well connects to IDEXX VetConnect PLUS.

Why people leave IDEXX Cornerstone

Cornerstone is the practice management program of IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., a company that names Westbrook, Maine as its base in the terms of use on idexx.com and applies Maine law to them. IDEXX describes the product as integrated, server-based veterinary software. In other words, the patient database sits on a server that the clinic or its IT partner looks after, and the program is tied tightly to the diagnostic instruments and reference lab services that IDEXX sells.

For a clinic in Europe that arrangement raises three questions at renewal time. Who is the contracting party for your client and patient data, and under which law do disputes fall? How much of your daily workflow depends on one supplier that also sells you the analysers and the lab work? And does the system know the billing and reporting rules of your own country, or only the American habits it was designed around?

None of these questions is a reason to leave on its own. Cornerstone is long-established software with a wide feature list, and many clinics run it without trouble. They become a reason when a practice is already unhappy with server upkeep, wants a browser-based system, or has to explain to a pet owner where the record is kept. The ten tools on this page come from Finland, Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and each answers a different part of that list.

  • The contract sits under Maine law The IDEXX terms of use name Westbrook, Maine as the company base and apply Maine law to the site. A clinic that signs a software agreement with a US entity accepts that jurisdiction for the data processing relationship as well, unless a regional IDEXX company contracts with it instead. Vendors such as inBehandlung, debevet, VetNative and VET7.well are German or Austrian companies with entries in a German or Austrian commercial register, which keeps the contract and the supervisory authority at home.
  • Server-based software is yours to maintain IDEXX calls Cornerstone server-based software. That means hardware in or near the practice, backups you must test, and updates that someone has to schedule. Vetera and Oblon Vet follow the same installed model, so they do not remove that duty. Provet Cloud, inBehandlung, debevet, VetNative and vetpraxis.de run in the browser and move the server work to the vendor, which is the main practical difference for a clinic with no IT staff.
  • Local billing and reporting rules are built in elsewhere A German practice bills under the GOT fee schedule and reports to HI-Tier, a Swiss practice needs camt.54 files and Twint, an Austrian one needs cash register rules. inBehandlung, debevet, Oblon Vet and VET7.well list these as product features rather than add-ons. The IDEXX pages checked describe diagnostics integration, scheduling, inventory and records, but they do not show a comparable list of European billing rules.
  • Diagnostic integration works in one direction Cornerstone is built around IDEXX instruments and the VetConnect PLUS lab portal, which is its strength and also its lock-in. If you want to send samples to Laboklin or Antech, or keep a non-IDEXX X-ray unit, the link depends on what the other vendor supports. inBehandlung orders from Laboklin, Antech and IDEXX, and VET7.well links to VetConnect PLUS, so a clinic can move the records without giving up the IDEXX lab.

What you have to replace, not just match

The core of Cornerstone is easy to name: scheduling, inventory, medical records, compliance alerts and imaging, all fed by IDEXX diagnostics. Every European tool on this page covers scheduling, records and stock. What changes is how lab results arrive.

In Cornerstone the instruments and the practice system are one product family, so results appear in the patient file without a mapping step. In a European system you have to confirm, device by device, that the analyser, the X-ray unit and the reference lab each have a supported interface.

Then there are the add-ons that a clinic quietly uses every day. IDEXX lists Vello for client engagement, Cornerstone Payments for card handling and VetConnect PLUS for results.

The replacements are scattered: Provet Cloud has payments built in and a 150+ integration list, VetNative sells an owner app and an online shop through eltiga, easyVET has the petsXL owner app and a reminder manager, and vetpraxis.de ships the MeineTiere.app owner app for the first six months. Plan the replacement as a list of jobs, not a single swap of one program for another.

The last item is the data. A practice moving from a server database to a new system needs its client list, patient history, vaccination dates and open invoices to arrive in a shape the new software can read. inBehandlung, debevet and vetpraxis.de mention data import or free data transfer on their pages, but none of the pages we checked says that a Cornerstone export is read natively. Ask for a test import with real records before you sign anything.

How each alternative compares to IDEXX Cornerstone

#1

Provet Cloud

The cloud choice for groups that want per-vet pricing and open integrations

Helsinki, FinlandCore $99 per vet per month (platform fee $249 per month, 1 vet included) or £139 per vet per month; Pro $129 or £159 per vet per month; Enterprise on request; Clinical Agent add-on $40 or £30 per seat per month#1 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Multi-site clinics and referral hospitals leaving a server-based system for the browser

Against Cornerstone, Provet Cloud swaps the practice server for a subscription from Nordhealth Finland Oy in Helsinki. The Core plan is listed at $99 or £139 per vet per month, with a platform fee of $249 per month in dollars, and the Pro plan adds a referral portal, multi-location tools and a triage board. IDEXX publishes no price on the pages we read, so Provet is the easier one to budget.

The weak points are about money and location. Prices appear in dollars and pounds, with no euro list, and the data hosting region was not found on the pages checked, so a data processing agreement should be read before signing. Provet quotes 150+ integrations and an AI clinical agent that costs extra per seat, but whether your exact analysers are among them has to be confirmed.

What Provet Cloud does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Public per-vet prices where IDEXX shows none
  • No practice server to maintain
  • Referral and multi-location tools in the Pro plan
  • EU contracting entity in Finland

Where Provet Cloud is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Deep IDEXX instrument integration is not its design
  • No euro price list and a separate platform fee
  • Hosting region not stated

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It is the only tool here that publishes a per-vet price list together with a referral portal for hospitals.

inBehandlung

The tiered German web option for small and mid-sized practices

Friedberg, GermanySOLO €87.50 per month (€97 billed monthly), TEAM €110.50 (€122), BUSINESS €168 (€186), all net; 2-week free trial#2 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: German-speaking practices of one to ten people wanting a browser system with listed net prices

inBehandlung from Seeberg Solutions GmbH in Friedberg is a small-practice system with three packages at €87.50, €110.50 and €168 per month on annual terms, all net. Where Cornerstone leaves you to arrange server and backups, inBehandlung says customer data sits at Hetzner in Germany with a shielded database per customer and several backups a day, all according to the vendor.

It also sends lab orders to Laboklin, Antech and IDEXX, which matters for a clinic that does not want to abandon its current reference lab. The limits are the German interface, storage capped at 1, 5 or 15 GB, and local lab devices reserved for the BUSINESS package. Monthly billing costs more than the annual rate, so compare the right column.

What inBehandlung does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Hosting in Germany named by the vendor
  • GOT, GoBD and DATEV export included
  • Two-week free trial and listed prices
  • No server to run in the practice

Where inBehandlung is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • German-language product tied to German rules
  • Storage limits per package
  • Local lab devices only in BUSINESS

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It is the one tool on the page that states a German data centre and a per-customer database in the same breath as its prices.

debevet

The lowest listed price and a monthly exit for small German practices

Berlin, GermanySolo €48, Praxis €78, Klinik €118, Nutztierpraxis €168 per month; 30-day free trial#3 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Solo vets, animal physiotherapists and farm-animal practices wanting low monthly cost and no lock-in

debevet from Debevet UG in Berlin lists Solo at €48, Praxis at €78, Klinik at €118 and Nutztierpraxis at €168 per month. The pricing page promises monthly notice and a 30-day trial that needs no bank details. Compared with Cornerstone's server model, there is nothing to install and the contract is the lightest on the page.

The trade is size and depth. Debevet UG is a small company, the vendor counts 350+ practices, the hosting location was not found on the pages we read and the interface is German only. Solo allows one user, and the HI-Tier reporting works through level 2, with later levels announced. A clinic with imaging and many devices should test the lab links first.

What debevet does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Starting price of €48 per month
  • Monthly cancellation and no-card trial
  • HI-Tier and Vetproof interface in the farm-animal plan
  • No hardware to maintain

Where debevet is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Small company with a UG legal form
  • Hosting region not stated
  • One user only on Solo

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. Its 30-day trial asks for no bank details and does not turn into a subscription on its own.

easyVET

A long-running German suite that runs locally or in the cloud

Isernhagen, GermanyPricing on request (not shown on the pages checked)#4 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Mixed and large-animal practices wanting a German vendor with consulting and a local-install option

easyVET is made by VetZ GmbH in Isernhagen, which dates its founding to 1997 on its company page. Like Cornerstone it can be installed on the practice's own hardware, and unlike Cornerstone it also has an optional VetZ cloud. The product range includes the owner app petsXL and a reminder manager, so client communication comes from the same vendor.

VetZ publishes no prices, and the cloud region sits in conditions we did not read in full. The vendor itself answers an FAQ on having too many functions, which hints at a longer onboarding than a lean web product. For a mixed-animal clinic that values a phone line and consulting staff, that may be an acceptable price for a familiar installed model.

What easyVET does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Local or cloud deployment from the same vendor
  • German vendor with a register entry and managing directors named
  • Owner app and reminder manager included in the range
  • Direct connection of lab devices

Where easyVET is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • No public price list
  • Wide module range can lengthen onboarding
  • German-first website

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It combines a local install with an optional vendor cloud, which few tools on this page offer.

Vetera

The closest installed Windows system to Cornerstone in design

Eltville am Rhein, GermanyPricing on request (the site promises a transparent model but lists no figures)#5 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Clinics, branch networks and university hospitals in the DACH region wanting to stay on installed software

Vetera GmbH in Eltville am Rhein sells installed software on a Microsoft SQL Server 2019 database, which makes it the nearest match to a server-based Cornerstone set-up. The company dates itself to 1989 and quotes about 18,000 users on the homepage. It documents REST, Swagger and SOAP interfaces, which helps a clinic that wires in its own tools.

Vetera is also part of Nordhealth, the group behind Provet Cloud, based on a 2022 news item, so the pairing is one supplier family, not two independent options. It needs Windows hardware, a server above five seats, a German-language site and no published price. Pick it when the aim is leaving the US vendor without changing how the practice runs.

What Vetera does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Same installed architecture, so the workflow changes little
  • Documented REST and SOAP interfaces
  • Separate set-ups for clinics, branch networks and universities
  • German vendor with a register entry

Where Vetera is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Still requires your own hardware and backups
  • No published price
  • Owned by the same group as Provet Cloud

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It states its database as Microsoft SQL Server 2019, which is rare detail on this page.

VetNative

An Austrian cloud suite with an owner app and shop attached

Raaba-Grambach, Austriaelovet from €80.90 per month on annual billing (page also shows €89.90); eltiga-Booking €31.40 per month annual (€34.90 shown); eltiga-Shop no fixed monthly cost#6 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Small and mid-sized practices in Austria and Germany that want booking, app and shop in one ecosystem

VetNative Digital GmbH in Raaba-Grambach splits its offer into elovet for the practice, eltiga-Booking for appointments and the eltiga owner app with a shop. Cornerstone has add-ons for client engagement too, but VetNative prices each part separately: elovet from €80.90 on annual billing, eltiga-Booking from €31.40. The shop is run with Richter Pharma, which handles order packing and delivery.

Cash register, lab and imaging are paid add-ons, so the real monthly bill exceeds the headline figure, and the net or gross status of the prices is not stated. The vendor counts 300+ vets, a smaller base than the long-running DACH vendors, and the site is German only. A Windows and macOS device connector covers local equipment.

What VetNative does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Austrian and German billing rules covered
  • Public starting prices per module
  • Owner app, booking and shop in one family
  • Connector for Windows and macOS devices

Where VetNative is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Add-ons raise the real monthly cost
  • Hosting region not stated
  • Smaller customer base than the older vendors

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It sells a pharmacy shop for pet owners that a partner fulfils, which no other tool on the page does.

vetpraxis.de

One flat monthly fee for small-animal and equine teams

Schierling, Germany€139 per month flat for teams up to 5 (€119 for the first 12 months after practice founding), excl. VAT; extras priced per use#7 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Practices with up to five staff that want a predictable monthly bill and a named contact person

vetpraxis.de from Schierling in Bavaria charges €139 per month excluding VAT for teams up to five, or €119 for the first 12 months after a practice is founded. The flat rate covers all special functions and any number of practice computers, and there is no setup fee. Against a Cornerstone contract with unknown pricing, the budget line is simply known in advance.

Growth is where it bites. The flat rate stops at five people and excludes farm-animal practices, and extras are billed per use. The data centre location is not named, though the site mentions protection by Akamai and Link11. Free data transfer and guided onboarding in the first three months soften a move from an older system.

What vetpraxis.de does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • A single, clear monthly fee
  • No setup fee and free data transfer
  • Owner app MeineTiere.app included for six months
  • Personal contact person promised

Where vetpraxis.de is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Flat rate limited to five staff
  • Farm-animal practices excluded from the flat rate
  • Data centre location not stated

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It lowers the fee for the first twelve months after a practice is founded.

VET7.well

An Austrian suite with cash register, large-animal tools and AI notes

Untersiebenbrunn, AustriaProfessional, Professional XL and Enterprise packages, all on request#8 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Austrian vets and Swiss or German practices that want billing, till and documentation in one product

VET7.well GmbH in Untersiebenbrunn sells to vets in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, with audience pages for small-animal, large and farm-animal, equine, physiotherapy and homeopathy practices. Its lab interface includes IDEXX VetConnect PLUS, which a clinic leaving Cornerstone for another supplier can keep using for results.

The package pages repeat nearly identical feature lists, prices are on request, and hosting is not stated, so comparing Professional, Professional XL and Enterprise takes a call. The AI documentation function, VET7.AI, and the self check-in options are pitched as time savers, and the vendor says updates are included.

What VET7.well does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Native link to IDEXX VetConnect PLUS
  • Cash register and large-animal function in the package lists
  • AI documentation and self check-in options
  • Covers three DACH markets

Where VET7.well is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • No published prices
  • Package differences unclear
  • Hosting not stated

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It is the one tool on the page that names a link to IDEXX VetConnect PLUS in its own lab interface list.

Oblon Vet

The Swiss choice for Mac and Windows practices

Zurich, SwitzerlandPricing on request (not shown on the pages checked)#9 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Swiss small-animal, mixed and mobile practices that use Mac and want Swiss billing formats

Oblon Vet is published by Amacker & Partner Informatik AG in Zurich, which says it has supported Swiss vets since 1991 and counts more than 400 practices. It is written in Java with PostgreSQL recommended, runs on Windows and macOS, and can stay on the local network if a practice does not want records in the cloud. Switzerland is outside the EU but covered by an adequacy decision.

Swiss details are the draw: camt.54 import, Twint, and links to Anis, Amicus and BLV, plus device interfaces for lab, X-ray and ultrasound. The limits are honest ones. Online booking through the practice homepage and SMS reminders are still marked coming soon, there is no native tablet app, and prices are on request.

What Oblon Vet does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Runs on macOS as well as Windows
  • Swiss payment and reporting formats
  • Local installation or optional cloud database
  • Device interfaces for lab, X-ray and ultrasound

Where Oblon Vet is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Online booking and SMS reminders listed as coming soon
  • No native tablet client
  • Strong Swiss focus

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It is the only tool here that lists macOS support together with Swiss camt.54 and Twint payment handling.

VET 4.0

A client/server system for clinics with many staff

Willich, GermanyPricing on request (not shown on the pages checked)#10 in Veterinary Practice Management Software

Best for: Large practices and clinics wanting personal task views and a search for comparable cases

VET 4.0 comes from BTE GmbH in Willich, whose history starts with Aniwindow in 1988 and which says VET 4.0 rolled out in February 2019 to a base of over 1,000 practices and clinics. As a client/server system it resembles Cornerstone's architecture more than the browser products do, and it adds an offline-capable tablet version.

Its distinct features suit large teams: personal user accounts with task lists, job sharing between vets, stock across any number of warehouses, and a search for comparable past treatments by breed, age, sex and weight. The claim that an assistant raises profit is the vendor's and was not checked. Price, hosting and trial terms are not published, and the pages are German only.

What VET 4.0 does better than IDEXX Cornerstone

  • Task views and job sharing for large teams
  • Search for comparable treatments
  • Multi-warehouse stock
  • Offline-capable tablet version

Where VET 4.0 is a step down from IDEXX Cornerstone

  • No published price or trial terms
  • Built for large practices rather than small ones
  • Hosting not stated

Standout against IDEXX Cornerstone. It searches earlier cases by breed, age, sex and weight when a vet plans a treatment.

What actually breaks when you switch

The first break is data. Cornerstone holds years of patient history, vaccination schedules and open invoices on a server database, and each European system has its own import path. Ask for a trial import using a copy of real data, then check that reminders, stock levels and client balances arrive intact. Plan a period of double entry for appointments, because the two schedules will not sync.

The second break is hardware and people. Installed products (Vetera, Oblon Vet, easyVET locally) reuse the server mindset, while cloud products change the daily routine: logins, browser updates and an internet line the clinic now depends on. Reception staff need training on new screens, and lab devices need fresh interfaces. Check notice periods in the IDEXX agreement before cancelling, since the pages we read do not publish them.

Can a clinic keep its IDEXX instruments after leaving Cornerstone?

Often yes, because the analysers are separate hardware from the practice software. The question is whether the new system accepts their results. IDEXX offers VetConnect PLUS as its results portal, and VET7.well states a link to it, while inBehandlung says lab orders can go to IDEXX as well as Laboklin and Antech. For on-site devices, Oblon Vet lists interfaces for lab, X-ray and ultrasound, and easyVET advertises a direct link to lab devices.

Do not rely on a feature page for this. Send each vendor the model numbers of your analysers and imaging equipment and ask for a written statement of what is supported today, since a planned interface is not a working one. inBehandlung, for example, reserves local lab devices for its top package.

Does a European system remove the need for a practice server?

Only if you pick a browser-based product. Provet Cloud, inBehandlung, debevet, VetNative and vetpraxis.de are used through the browser, so the database is the vendor's responsibility. Vetera needs Windows hardware and, above five seats, a server, and Oblon Vet runs on the local network by default, with a cloud database as an option. easyVET can be run either way.

Moving to the cloud also changes the cost line: the hardware and backup effort become a monthly fee. For a one-vet practice the figures are small, for example debevet from €48 or vetpraxis.de at €139 flat for up to five people, but a ten-vet clinic on a per-vet plan such as Provet Cloud's will see a different curve.

Which one to pick

If the practice wants the least change, Vetera is the nearest in architecture and Oblon Vet is the Swiss equivalent, both installed on your own network. If the aim is to drop the server, Provet Cloud fits groups and referral clinics that can live with dollar and pound pricing, while inBehandlung, debevet and vetpraxis.de fit small German-speaking teams that want a listed monthly fee.

Keep Cornerstone if the clinic is outside the DACH and Nordic markets, or if IDEXX instruments are the centre of the workflow and the lab link is the main reason for the software. For everyone else, shortlist two tools, ask both for a supported-device list and a test import, and let the data processing agreement and hosting answer decide the final pick.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how the clinic works. Vetera is the closest in design, an installed Windows system with an SQL Server database. Provet Cloud suits groups and referral clinics that want a cloud system with a public per-vet price. inBehandlung and debevet suit small German-speaking practices that want listed monthly prices, and Oblon Vet fits Swiss practices that use Mac as well as Windows.

Yes. IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. names Westbrook, Maine as its base in the terms of use on idexx.com and applies Maine law to them. The company also runs country sites for Europe, so the contracting entity for a given clinic may differ, which is worth asking in writing before a renewal or a move.

debevet lists four plans from €48 to €168 per month, inBehandlung lists €87.50 to €168 net, VetNative starts at €80.90 per month on annual billing and vetpraxis.de charges €139 flat for up to five people. Provet Cloud publishes dollars and pounds only. Vetera, easyVET, VET7.well, Oblon Vet and VET 4.0 quote on request.

Yes, but not every product covers every country. Oblon Vet supports camt.54, Twint and BLV links for Switzerland, VET7.well sells in Austria, Germany and Switzerland and includes a cash register, and VetNative covers Austrian and German billing rules. Practices outside these markets should ask each vendor which fee schedules and reporting duties are supported.

Provet Cloud lists multi-location management, a referral portal and Enterprise pricing on request, and Vetera has separate set-ups for clinics, branch networks and university hospitals. VET 4.0 is aimed at large teams, with personal task views and stock across any number of stores. Both Vetera and Provet Cloud belong to Nordhealth, so they are not independent choices.
