European Alternatives to HackerRank

Looking for a European alternative to HackerRank? HackerRank is operated by Interviewstreet, Inc. in California, its community and candidate terms are governed by California law with disputes heard in Santa Clara County or the Northern District of California, and its pricing page needs JavaScript and cookies to display, so no price is quoted here (checked 23 October 2026).

The European tools below cover coding tests and live code interviews from vendors in the UK and Croatia, and add personality, aptitude and game-based assessments from Sweden, France, Italy and the Netherlands for roles where a coding screen is not enough.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • HackerRank is operated by Interviewstreet, Inc. in California, and its community and candidate terms are governed by California law with disputes heard in Santa Clara County or the Northern District of California.
  • HackerRank sells a funnel of products named Screen, Interview, Engage, SkillUp and Chakra, so a European replacement is usually two tools, one for coding and one for everything else.
  • Codility (UK) and TestDome (Croatia) are the two European tools that pair a developer screening step with live interviews and cheating or plagiarism detection.
  • TestDome prices per candidate from $7 in prepaid packs with no subscription, while Codility sells annual plans at $1,200 for Starter and $6,000 for Scale.
  • Alva Labs (Sweden) is the only European tool on this page that lists personality, logic and coding tests in one platform.

Why people leave HackerRank

HackerRank is a developer hiring platform run by Interviewstreet, Inc. under the HackerRank name.

Its website lists a Screen product for sending coding assessments, an Interview product for live technical interviews, an Engage product for employer branding, SkillUp for upskilling staff, and Chakra, a product for pre-screening with AI interviews. Behind those sit certified assessments, plagiarism detection, a bank of real-world questions and a set of integrations. For an engineering team that is a complete funnel, and it explains why it is the name recruiters type first.

The reasons to look elsewhere are mostly contractual and structural. The community and candidate terms are governed by California law, with disputes heard in Santa Clara County or the Northern District of California, and they contain a binding arbitration clause and a class action waiver.

The footer links a Master Subscription Agreement, a Data Processing Addendum, a sub-processor list and technical and organizational measures, which is a fuller document set than many vendors publish, but all of it is issued by a US company.

Candidate data is the sensitive part. A coding test records how a named person solves problems under time pressure, often with a webcam, and recruiters keep the scores. For a European employer that asks for a data processing agreement, a transfer assessment and a processor list before a pilot can start. The rest of this page asks which European tools replace which parts of the HackerRank funnel, and which parts they do not.

  • The contract sits under Californian law The community and candidate terms point to California law and to courts in Santa Clara County, and they route disputes into arbitration with a class action waiver. Those terms govern candidates and the developer community, not your enterprise agreement, which is a separate Master Subscription Agreement. A European buyer should read both and ask which governs a complaint from a rejected applicant.
  • The price is behind a script The pricing page needs JavaScript and cookies to display, so a plain request returns no figures, and none are quoted here. That is common in the category, but it means a procurement team cannot compare HackerRank with Codility's $1,200 and $6,000 plans or TestDome's $7 per candidate without opening the page in a browser or talking to sales.
  • One platform for the whole funnel brings one point of exposure Screen, Interview, Engage and SkillUp share a vendor, and the privacy policy covers the website, the community and the enterprise services together, with a last update date of 6 March 2025. Splitting the funnel across a coding specialist and a psychometric vendor spreads candidate data over two contracts, which is more paperwork but a smaller blast radius if one vendor changes its terms.
  • Its AI interviews have to be checked against European rules Chakra, HackerRank's product for pre-screening with AI interviews, scores candidates before a human sees them. A European employer should review such a tool against the EU AI Act and its own works council rules. Skillvue and TestGorilla offer comparable AI-scored formats from European entities, and the buyer still has to do the same review for them.

What you have to replace, not just match

The part that is easiest to replace is the coding screen itself. A timed test, a library of questions, a plagiarism check and a report are offered by Codility and TestDome, and both also run live interviews with a shared editor.

What you cannot copy over is your own content: custom questions, scoring rubrics, the tests you tuned for a particular role and the history of scores per candidate. Export what the platform allows, then rebuild the top ten tests in the new tool before you cancel.

The harder part is everything around the screen. HackerRank also sells employer branding and developer-skills benchmarking, and an AI interview step. A European coding vendor will not replace the branding product, and you should decide whether to keep a content channel elsewhere. For AI interviews, Skillvue and TestGorilla are the nearest European matches, with TestGorilla charging 2 credits per customised AI interview on the Plus plan.

Finally, count the integrations. If HackerRank feeds results into your applicant tracking system, the new tool needs the same connection on the plan you buy: TestDome keeps ATS integrations and API access in its Enterprise tier, AssessFirst sells ATS integration as an add-on, and Alva Labs offers an ATS of its own. Check the exact system by name with each vendor before you sign.

How each alternative compares to HackerRank

#1

Codility

The closest swap for the screening and interview steps, from a UK company with posted plans

London (registered office), United KingdomStarter $1,200 a year (120 invite credits, 1 user); Scale $6,000 (300 invite credits, 3 users); Custom on request#1 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Engineering teams that want a HackerRank-style coding screen and live interview with published annual prices

Against HackerRank, Codility copies the shape of the product more than any other tool here. A Screen step filters developers with coding, SQL and multiple-choice tasks, an Interview step lets you watch a candidate work live, and both draw on the same invite credits. Candidates work in a VS Code environment with a terminal, and the vendor says tasks that leak are removed from its library.

The company is Codility Limited, registered in England and Wales and governed by English law, so it sits outside the EU but under the UK GDPR and not US law. Starter costs $1,200 a year with one user and Scale costs $6,000 with three users and custom task building through MCP. The hosting country is not stated on the pages read.

What Codility does better than HackerRank

  • Plan prices visible without a sales call or a script
  • Contract under English law and the UK GDPR
  • Custom tasks built from your own IDE on Scale
  • Skills Intelligence module on the Custom tier

Where Codility is a step down from HackerRank

  • US dollar pricing with annual billing and credit caps
  • Outside the EU, and hosting not stated
  • No personality or cognitive tests for non-technical roles

Standout against HackerRank. It is the only European option that matches HackerRank's screen-plus-interview structure with plan prices on the page.

TestDome

The pay-per-candidate coding and skills option for companies that hire in bursts

Zagreb, CroatiaPrepaid packs: 5 candidates $100, 25 for $400, 100 for $1,000, 300 for $2,400, 600 for $4,200 (from $7 per candidate); no subscription#2 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Small and mid-sized employers that hire developers or office staff irregularly and dislike yearly contracts

Where HackerRank asks you to open a pricing page that needs a script, TestDome prints the sums: $100 for 5 candidates, $400 for 25, $1,000 for 100, $2,400 for 300 and $4,200 for 600, which works out from $20 down to $7 per candidate. Packs never expire and an unused invite is refunded after six days, so the model fits a company that hires developers a few times a year.

Every pack includes webcam and screen proctoring, AI cheating detection and a collaborative IDE for interviews, and tests span more than 130 skills and 30 or more languages and frameworks. The company is TestDome Ltd. in Zagreb, with three named owners on its terms page. SSO, ATS integrations and API access are Enterprise features outside the self-serve packs.

What TestDome does better than HackerRank

  • No subscription and no expiry on prepaid packs
  • Proctoring and interviews included in every pack
  • Owners and court register named on the terms page
  • Unused invites returned to the balance after six days

Where TestDome is a step down from HackerRank

  • Prices in US dollars
  • Enterprise functions kept out of the self-serve packs
  • No psychometric tests

Standout against HackerRank. Its prepaid packs with refunded invites are the lowest-commitment way to leave HackerRank for a European contract.

Alva Labs

A psychometrics-first platform with a coding test, for mixed hiring across engineering and other roles

Stockholm, SwedenPriced per hire by annual volume; quote on request#3 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Mid-sized and large employers hiring engineers and non-engineers who want one vendor from Stockholm

Alva Labs approaches the problem from the other side. Its Psychometrics tier lists a personality test, a logic test and a coding test, so an employer that used HackerRank for developers and a separate tool for everyone else can look at one vendor. The coding test uses real-world problems in a GitHub-based environment, and the code is reviewed by AI for structure and maintainability as well as scored by automated tests.

The company is Alva Labs AB at Luntmakargatan 66 in Stockholm, founded in 2017, and it cites DNV certification to ISO 10667, ISO 27001 and ISO 42001. Both tiers are priced per hire by annual volume, with no figures on the site. The vendor positions its own applicant tracking as a replacement for the ATS you have.

What Alva Labs does better than HackerRank

  • Personality and logic tests next to the coding test
  • Certifications named on the about page
  • Structured interviews and scorecards built in
  • Swedish contracting entity, EU law

Where Alva Labs is a step down from HackerRank

  • Coding test less deep than Codility or TestDome
  • No prices without a demo
  • Per-hire model awkward for a single role

Standout against HackerRank. It covers developer and non-developer screening in one Swedish platform instead of two contracts.

AssessFirst

A short-test psychometric option for the roles HackerRank was never built to assess

Paris, FranceFrom EUR 499 a month; one subscription with a token balance, final price agreed with an expert#4 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: HR teams assessing candidates and current employees from one subscription and one token balance

AssessFirst answers a question HackerRank does not ask: how does a person like to work and what motivates them. SWIPE measures personality in about five minutes, DRIVE motivation, BRAIN learning ability and VOICE skills and languages, and SCAN adds structured AI screening. It is sold as one subscription from EUR 499 a month with unlimited licences, and tokens stay valid for up to 60 months.

The company is AssessFirst SAS, registered in Paris under RCS 443 179 684. The EUR 499 is a floor, because an expert agrees the final price, and ATS integration is an add-on. The product list shows no coding assessment, so it works as a complement to Codility or TestDome and not as a replacement.

What AssessFirst does better than HackerRank

  • Personality, motivation and learning-ability tests that HackerRank does not offer
  • One token pool for hiring and internal mobility
  • A published starting price in euros

Where AssessFirst is a step down from HackerRank

  • No coding assessment
  • Final price only after an expert call
  • ATS integration not in the base price

Standout against HackerRank. It is the tool to add next to a coding vendor when the same HR team also hires and develops non-engineers.

Assessio

A long-established Swedish test publisher whose suite reaches beyond hiring

SwedenPricing on request (quote form on the pricing page)#5 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Larger and public-sector employers that want validated psychometrics and performance management under one contract

Assessio is a poor match for a developer funnel and a strong one for the part of the company HackerRank does not touch. It says it was founded in 1954 as Psykologiförlaget by the Swedish Psychological Association, reports more than 2,000 customers and nine offices in Europe, and sells behavioural, personality and aptitude tests with a role match score.

The privacy notice names Assessio International AB as data controller. Predictive Hiring is one of four use cases in its Talent Suite, next to performance, development and retention. The pricing page lists ISO 27001, GDPR and DNV certification and a quote form, with no figures, and the pages read show no coding assessment.

What Assessio does better than HackerRank

  • Test heritage that a works council can trace to a psychology association
  • Performance and succession modules beyond hiring
  • Certifications listed on the pricing page

Where Assessio is a step down from HackerRank

  • No coding assessment
  • No published prices
  • Wider than a simple screening need

Standout against HackerRank. It is the one vendor here that can explain the origin of its tests to a works council, because they come from a psychology association.

Skillvue

The European match for HackerRank's AI interview step, built on your competency framework

Milan, ItalyPricing on request; demo booking only#6 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Large employers that want AI-scored interviews and a shared skills model across hiring and promotion

Skillvue is closest to Chakra, HackerRank's AI interview product, and further from the coding test. It learns your competency framework and roles, builds interview questions from them and accepts audio, video, written or multiple-choice answers in over 50 languages. The results feed hiring, promotion and mobility decisions.

The company is Algojob S.r.l., trading as Skillvue, with a registered office in Milan and a founding year of 2021. The site names Oracle, SAP, Workday and Greenhouse among more than 100 integrations and shows ISO 27001 and SOC 2 badges. Prices are not published and the only call to action is a demo, so a small team cannot self-serve.

What Skillvue does better than HackerRank

  • Questions contextualised to your competency framework
  • Audio, video and written answer formats
  • 100+ integrations named on the site
  • Italian contracting entity under EU law

Where Skillvue is a step down from HackerRank

  • No coding challenge library
  • Demo-only start with no prices
  • Performance statistics on the site are its own figures

Standout against HackerRank. It treats the interview as a skills measurement tied to your own framework instead of a generic question set.

Equalture

A game-based first filter for high-volume hiring, with no link to coding

Rotterdam, NetherlandsPricing on request (demo scheduler)#7 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Retail, logistics and service employers with high application volume and enough staff to define a success profile

Equalture belongs on a HackerRank replacement list only when the company also hires people who do not write code. Current employees play short games, the Success DNA Engine finds the signals that separate your top performers, and each role gets a success profile that sets the game flow for candidates.

The contact page prints Equalture B.V. in Rotterdam, and case studies name VodafoneZiggo, Rituals, Hunkemoller and Randstad. The vendor calls the games fair and AI-proof, which is its claim and not an audit. The method needs set-up before the first candidate, no prices are published, and there are no coding tests.

What Equalture does better than HackerRank

  • Scoring model built from your own top performers
  • Interview guides included with the hire step
  • Games aimed at lowering candidate drop-off

Where Equalture is a step down from HackerRank

  • No coding tests
  • Set-up work before first use
  • No published prices

Standout against HackerRank. It is the only tool here that starts by measuring your current staff and links results to later performance.

TestGorilla

A skills library with video questions and AI interviews, and a free plan to pilot

NetherlandsFree plan; Core from $215 per month and Plus from $520 per month per account, billed annually (US dollar view of the pricing page)#8 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Teams that screen on skills first and add video or AI interviews for a smaller shortlist

TestGorilla gives a HackerRank user a mixed library: 350+ tests, video questions and AI interviews in one platform. Technical and non-technical tests sit together, which suits a company hiring across several functions. Core costs $215 a month and Plus $520 on annual billing, and a free plan gives 10 credits a month.

The contracting company is TestGorilla B.V., Chamber of Commerce number 77597249. A video question costs 1 credit per candidate and a customised AI interview 2, and custom video and the full AI interview library need Plus. Video answers are AI-scored, which the privacy policy states, so review it against the EU AI Act. Hosting region is not stated.

What TestGorilla does better than HackerRank

  • A free plan for piloting
  • One library covering technical and non-technical skills
  • Dutch company on the KvK register
  • Video and AI interviews in the same product

Where TestGorilla is a step down from HackerRank

  • Coding depth below the specialists
  • Credit model needs planning
  • Full AI interviews only on Plus

Standout against HackerRank. It offers the cheapest way to test a European alternative before committing, because the free plan costs nothing.

Ixly

Published euro prices for psychometrics, billed per use, without a coding module

Utrecht, NetherlandsPlatform EUR 0, EUR 60.80 or EUR 196.80 a month (annual subscription) plus per-test credits; 360 feedback from EUR 20 a month#9 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Dutch and Belgian HR consultancies and in-house HR departments that buy personality and intelligence tests by use

Ixly is the tool here with the most prices on the page, which sets it apart from HackerRank's script-gated pricing. The platform costs EUR 0, EUR 60.80 or EUR 196.80 a month on an annual subscription, with test discounts of 50 and 60 percent on the upper tiers, and premium modules such as a career report at EUR 52.65 are charged per use.

The company is Ixly B.V. in Utrecht, registered under number 30204565, and the general terms are in Dutch. Tests follow a separate price list, so a budget needs two pages. A customer case describes a Dutch agency assessing more than 6,000 candidates a year through SAP SuccessFactors. It offers no coding tests.

What Ixly does better than HackerRank

  • A EUR 0 tier for occasional users
  • Personality, intelligence and 360 feedback on one platform
  • Euro prices published for subscriptions and modules

Where Ixly is a step down from HackerRank

  • No coding tests
  • Costs split across platform, tests and modules
  • General terms in Dutch

Standout against HackerRank. It is the only tool here where occasional users pay EUR 0 a month and buy tests as needed.

Arctic Shores

Task-based psychometrics for graduate hiring, with no coding component

Manchester, United KingdomPricing on request (demo booking)#10 in Pre-Employment Assessment Software

Best for: Graduate and early-careers recruiters who want to replace the CV screen with an interactive assessment

Arctic Shores is the furthest from HackerRank in what a candidate does. Instead of solving code or answering questions, candidates complete interactive tasks, and a psychometric profile is built from how they play. The vendor argues this is harder for generative AI to complete, a claim it makes itself and the page does not audit.

The legal centre gives company number 08589048 and a registered office in Manchester, and lists SaaS terms, a data processing addendum, a third-party processors schedule and a data security policy. Case studies name Siemens, Molson Coors and Burness Paull. It is a UK company outside the EU, no prices are shown, and the site footer shows 2024.

What Arctic Shores does better than HackerRank

  • A full legal centre with DPA and processors schedule
  • A task format instead of text questions
  • Company number and address published

Where Arctic Shores is a step down from HackerRank

  • No coding assessment
  • No published prices
  • UK entity outside the EU

Standout against HackerRank. It publishes the documents a procurement team asks for first, including a processors schedule, before any demo.

What actually breaks when you switch

Plan the switch around candidates in flight. Open invitations sent from HackerRank keep pointing at HackerRank, so run the old contract until the last link has expired or been answered, and tell recruiters which tool to use for new requisitions. Scores from two tools are not comparable, so keep one role on one tool for the whole cycle.

Rebuild content before you retire the old account: custom questions, rubrics and any tuned tests for key roles. Cancel only after a pilot with at least one real opening, and tell candidates in writing which vendor processes their data, because the privacy notice they saw was HackerRank's. Retraining is mostly about the reports: Codility, TestDome and the psychometric vendors present results differently, so give hiring managers a short briefing on how to read them.

Can one European tool replace HackerRank for both developers and other roles?

Only partly. HackerRank is a developer product, and the European tools that match its coding side, Codility and TestDome, do not list personality or reasoning tests. Alva Labs lists a personality test, a logic test and a GitHub-based coding test in one tier, and TestGorilla mixes technical and non-technical tests in a library of 350+, but both say or show that the coding depth is smaller than at the specialists.

A realistic setup for a company that hires developers and others is a pair: Codility or TestDome for engineering, and AssessFirst, Assessio, Ixly or Alva Labs for the rest. That doubles the vendor count but keeps each tool strong in its own field, and the contracts are European in both cases.

Is a European assessment vendor automatically safer for candidate data?

Not automatically. A European vendor gives you a contract under European or UK law and a regulator close to the candidate. It does not tell you where the data is hosted: the tool pages for all ten vendors on this page record the data location as not stated on the pages we read, so the hosting question moves from the HackerRank contract to a written question to each European vendor.

What you do gain is a named entity in a register. Codility Limited is registered in England and Wales, TestDome Ltd. in Zagreb, AssessFirst SAS in Paris, Ixly B.V. in Utrecht and Skillvue's Algojob S.r.l. in Milan. Ask for each vendor's sub-processor list before the pilot, as you would from HackerRank.

Which one to pick

If your hiring is mostly developers, choose Codility for the closest structure to HackerRank and plan prices you can read, or TestDome if you hire in bursts and prefer prepaid packs with no yearly commitment. Both are European, with Codility under UK law and TestDome in Croatia. Neither covers personality or reasoning, so they are the first half of a stack.

If you hire across roles, pair one of those with Alva Labs for a single psychometric and coding platform, or with AssessFirst, Assessio or Ixly for the non-technical side. Add Skillvue or TestGorilla when you want AI-scored interviews and have reviewed them under the EU AI Act, and Equalture or Arctic Shores for high-volume or graduate funnels. Whichever you pick, ask for the hosting region and sub-processor list in writing, because none of the pages we read states it.

Frequently Asked Questions

For coding tests, Codility and TestDome are the closest European matches: Codility runs candidates in a VS Code environment and publishes two annual plans, and TestDome sells prepaid packs from $7 per candidate with proctoring included. If you also want personality or logic tests, Alva Labs lists them next to a coding test, and Skillvue and TestGorilla offer AI-scored interviews. Which fits depends on the roles you hire for.

Codility has an Interview step next to its Screen step, and both draw on the same invite credits. TestDome offers a collaborative IDE with video call, chat, a virtual whiteboard and private notes in every pack. Alva Labs says deeper technical libraries and live pair-coding are more specific at Codility and TestDome than at its own platform.

Yes, but not all. Codility lists $1,200 a year for Starter and $6,000 for Scale, TestDome lists packs from $100 for 5 candidates to $4,200 for 600, AssessFirst starts at EUR 499 a month, Ixly lists EUR 0, EUR 60.80 and EUR 196.80 a month plus test credits, and TestGorilla has a free plan. Alva Labs, Assessio, Skillvue, Equalture and Arctic Shores sell on quote or demo.

Some do. TestGorilla scores recorded video answers with AI and runs AI interviews, and Skillvue runs AI-adapted interviews against a competency framework. Alva Labs reviews code with AI and offers an opt-in agent add-on, and Codility sells AI-skill tasks. Each of these needs a review against the EU AI Act and your works council rules.

TestDome has no subscription and a five-candidate pack costs $100, TestGorilla has a free plan with 10 credits a month, and Ixly has a EUR 0 platform tier where you buy credit as needed. Codility Starter is an annual plan, so a pilot there means committing to a year.
