Threema vs Wire
Threema is a Swiss messenger sold as a one-time app purchase, with no phone number or email needed and servers in Zurich. Wire is a Berlin-headquartered, open-source collaboration suite with a free tier, per-user team plans and conferences of up to 150 people. Threema wins on anonymity and price; Wire wins on team features and published certifications.

Where Threema and Wire differ
Across the six points below, Threema has the edge on 2 points, Wire on 2 points and 2 are a tie. A count like that is a summary, not a verdict: the point that matters to you may be the one the other product wins.
Price of getting started
Threema Private is a one-time purchase, listed on threema.com at 6.00 in the selected currency (CHF, EUR or USD), and the page notes that the real figure depends on the app store and country. Wire has a free tier for small teams of up to 5 people and a personal account, so nobody pays to start. One buys once, the other costs nothing until a team outgrows it, so neither is cheaper for every user.
No clear winner on this point.
Business licence cost
Threema Work Core is listed at 3.00 per user per month on annual payment, and Work Professional, which adds Broadcast and API access, at 5.00. Wire for SMB is listed at EUR 7.45 per person per month on annual payment (EUR 8.94 monthly) for teams of up to 100 people; Enterprise is priced on request. On published list prices Threema is the lower entry for a company messenger.
Edge: Threema
Identity and sign-up
Threema states that it needs neither a phone number nor an email address: users get a Threema ID, contact lists stay on the device and messages are removed from its servers after delivery. Wire is built around accounts and teams, with SSO and SCIM on the SMB plan. Where anonymity from the provider matters, Threema's design is the more direct answer.
Edge: Threema
Conferencing and collaboration
Wire lists video conferences with up to 150 participants on the SMB plan, screen sharing, guest links without an account, federation between backends, and a file workspace (Wire Drive). Threema lists voice, video and group calls, polls, and Broadcast for one-to-many messages, but its pricing page gives no participant limit for calls. For a Teams-style replacement, Wire covers more ground.
Edge: Wire
Hosting and data location
Threema says it runs its own servers in two data centres of an ISO 27001-certified colocation partner in Zurich, and offers OnPrem for self-hosting. Wire says its servers are in Germany and Ireland and offers cloud, on-premises or hybrid deployment. Switzerland is outside the EU, Germany and Ireland inside it; which suits depends on whether your policy wants EU soil or Swiss law.
No clear winner on this point.
Open code and certification
Wire says its source code is 100 percent open source on GitHub, and that Wire holds ISO 27001, ISO 27701 and Cyber Essentials. Threema publishes its apps under AGPLv3 with reproducible Android builds (still marked experimental), but the apps remain paid, and the audit it cites on its history page dates from 2019. Wire shows more current certification.
Edge: Wire
When neither Threema nor Wire fits
If neither fits, Olvid is a French messenger with ANSSI security visas, Teamwire is a German business messenger hosted in Germany, and Element offers a Matrix-based option that can be self-hosted.
Threema vs Wire: questions
No. Threema states that it requires neither a phone number nor an email address; users are identified by a Threema ID, and contact lists stay on the device.
Threema AG is a Swiss company based in Pfaeffikon SZ; its history page says ownership passed from Afinum Management GmbH to Comitis Capital GmbH, a German firm, at the start of 2026. Wire says Wire Group Holdings GmbH in Berlin owns all subsidiaries, including Wire Swiss GmbH, and that European institutional investors hold over 90 percent.
Both publish code. Threema's apps are under AGPLv3 but are still sold as paid apps, with an anonymous licence check blocking IDs from self-compiled builds. Wire says its source code is fully open source on GitHub.
Threema says Zurich, Switzerland. Wire says Germany and Ireland.
