European SIP Trunking and Virtual Number Providers

A SIP trunk carries every call your phone system makes and receives, so the carrier sees who you call, when, and for how long, and it holds the numbers your customers know. These European providers sell trunks and numbers under UK, Irish, German, Swiss, Dutch or Croatian contracts, which keeps call records and number ownership outside US legal reach.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Simwood ranks first in this category because its trunks can be controlled through a portal and an API on a network that the Bristol company says it owns, the nearest European match to an API-first US carrier.
  • DIDWW is the supplier on this list that prints trunk rates openly, with US local termination from $0.004 a minute on 31 October 2026, and it contracts through DIDWW Ireland Limited in Dublin.
  • Gamma Telecom owns the German provider Placetel, so a Cologne contract and a Newbury contract can sit under the same UK group.
  • Colt, Gamma Telecom and Infobip publish no trunk prices, which means a cost comparison with easybell, DIDWW or sipgate starts with a quote and the same assumptions about channels and destinations.
  • Peoplefone is headquartered in Zurich and Switzerland is outside the EU, so its place on the list rests on a European, non-US contracting company rather than EU membership.

European SIP trunking and virtual number providers connect a company phone system to the public telephone network and supply the numbers customers dial, under a contract signed with a carrier in Europe, which matters because the carrier sees every call record and holds the numbers and answers to European courts and regulators.

#1 Simwood

Bristol, United Kingdom Founded 1996 No trunk prices on the hosted trunk page; a separate rates section exists Demo on request

Best for: Teams that want to manage trunks through an API on a carrier-owned network

  • Operating company. Simwood eSMS Limited
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Telnyx, Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking

Simwood sells hosted SIP trunks, numbers and a hosted PBX from Bristol, on a network that the company says it owns and operates end to end. Each trunk can be adjusted through a portal or an API for ring timeouts, time-of-day routing, failover and forwarding. That control model is what puts Simwood nearest to API-first US carriers among the European options.

The company behind the service is Simwood eSMS Limited, registered in England under number 03379831, and it describes itself as a software-defined carrier. The hosted trunk page does not list prices or channel limits, the group footer also shows a Tennessee address and a Tbilisi office, and data location is not stated, so the order form should name the UK company as the contracting party.

What Simwood does well

  • Network that the carrier says it owns and runs
  • Trunks controlled through a portal and an API
  • Ring timeouts, time-of-day routing and failover are part of the trunk
  • Hosted PBX from the same supplier
  • ISO 27001 and ISO 9001 marks displayed on its site

Where Simwood falls short

  • No prices on the hosted trunk page
  • A US address and a Georgian office appear in the group footer
  • Data location not stated on the pages checked
  • Documentation depth not assessed beyond public pages

Standout feature. Simwood is the European trunk supplier that pairs portal and API control with a network the carrier says it owns.

#2 DIDWW

Dublin, Ireland On 31 Oct 2026 the pricing page showed US local termination from $0.004 a minute, international from $0.0046, and US numbers from $1.20 a month (US dollars) Demo on request

Best for: Resellers, platforms and companies that want published rates and many number countries

  • Operating company. DIDWW Ireland Limited
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Ireland)
  • Where the data sits. Privacy notice names the USA, Singapore and Germany among processing locations
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Telnyx, Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking, Bandwidth

DIDWW sells SIP trunking, virtual numbers and business SMS, and its terms name DIDWW Ireland Limited at 25 North Wall Quay in Dublin as the operator. The pricing page shows a per-minute rate for a chosen destination; on 31 October 2026 it listed US local termination from $0.004 and international from $0.0046, with US numbers from $1.20 a month.

The catalogue also covers toll-free, shared cost and universal international freephone numbers, fax over SIP, a cloud PBX called phone.systems and a REST API. Founding year is not stated on the pages checked, prices are in US dollars, the privacy notice names the USA, Singapore and Germany as processing locations, and the terms exclude emergency calls unless agreed in writing.

What DIDWW does well

  • Irish contracting company named in the terms
  • Rate by destination shown online, with a price list to download
  • Free number porting stated
  • Many number types, including toll-free and shared cost
  • Cloud PBX and REST API from the same company

Where DIDWW falls short

  • Billed in US dollars
  • Emergency calls excluded unless agreed in writing
  • Data may be processed in the USA and Singapore
  • Less local-language support than the German providers

Standout feature. DIDWW shows the per-minute rate for a selected country on its pricing page, which few European carriers do.

#3 easybell

Berlin, Germany Trunk plans shown from €1.95 a month for two channels after a six-month free period; whether VAT is included was not stated in the text seen Not stated for trunks

Best for: German-speaking offices that want channel plans with no minimum term

  • Operating company. easybell GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Telnyx, Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking

easybell is a Berlin provider whose SIP trunk plans run from two to 1,000 channels with no minimum term. Its trunk page shows plans from €1.95 a month for two channels after a six-month free period, and a basic cloud PBX comes with the plans. The model is a fixed channel count, which makes the monthly cost easy to forecast for an office with stable call volumes.

The contracting company is easybell GmbH in Berlin, and since October 2022 it has belonged to Dstny, a Belgian group. Easybell sells a Teams connector as well. Whether the trunk prices include VAT was not stated in the text seen, the founding year was not checked, and no developer API was found on the trunk page.

What easybell does well

  • Plans from two to 1,000 channels
  • No minimum term
  • Basic cloud PBX included
  • Teams connector available
  • German company in Berlin

Where easybell falls short

  • VAT treatment of trunk prices not stated
  • Owned by Dstny, a Belgian group
  • No developer API found on the trunk page
  • Per-minute rates by destination not shown on the page checked

Standout feature. easybell is the only supplier on this list whose trunk plans start at two channels with no minimum term.

#4 sipgate.io

Düsseldorf, Germany API add-on: free S tier with 100 webhook calls, then 4.9 cents per call; M plan €4.95 a month at 2.9 cents per call; L plan €29.95 a month at 1.9 cents per call; XL on request; SMS 9.9 cents net per 160 characters; an existing sipgate account is required Demo on request

Best for: German developers who already use sipgate telephony and want call and SMS webhooks

  • Operating company. sipgate GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Twilio Voice, Vonage

sipgate.io is the developer add-on to the telephony of sipgate GmbH in Düsseldorf, offering a REST API with webhooks for call control, SMS and fax, plus a Push API that delivers live call events. The trunking side of sipgate connects Asterisk, 3CX and Starface systems to the German network, with per-minute billing and a flexible channel count.

Prices for the add-on are published down to the single call: the free S tier includes 100 webhook calls, M costs €4.95 a month at 2.9 cents per call and L costs €29.95 a month at 1.9 cents, while SMS costs 9.9 cents net per 160 characters. The add-on needs an existing sipgate account and has no WhatsApp or RCS, so it fits teams already on sipgate.

What sipgate.io does well

  • Per-call and per-SMS prices printed in full
  • Free tier with 100 webhook calls
  • Push API for live call events
  • German company under German data protection law
  • Webhooks keep call logic simple to script

Where sipgate.io falls short

  • Needs an existing sipgate telephony account
  • No WhatsApp, RCS or omnichannel messaging
  • Voice and SMS only, no wider platform
  • Does not suit a new application with no sipgate number

Standout feature. sipgate.io prices every webhook call and every SMS separately and in euro, so the monthly figure can be added up in advance.

#5 Gradwell

Bath, United Kingdom Founded 1998 Wave phone system per user and month: Wave 100 from GBP 7.90, Wave 1000 from GBP 11.10, Wave 3000 from GBP 15.90 Demo on request

Best for: UK businesses that run 3CX or want a phone system with included minutes

  • Operating company. Gradwell Communications Limited
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. 8x8, RingCentral, Dialpad

Gradwell Communications Limited, registered in England and Wales with an office in Bath, states that it has delivered cloud technology since 1998. Its trunk card lists 3CX preferred status and Teams Direct Routing, and the company says it is the largest 3CX partner in EMEA, a claim made on its own site. The wider range includes business mobile, broadband and leased lines.

The published prices belong to the Wave phone system: Wave 100 from GBP 7.90 per user a month with 100 minutes, Wave 1000 from GBP 11.10 and Wave 3000 from GBP 15.90. The company is British, so it sits outside the EU, the checked policy names some processors outside the UK and EEA, and the trunk-only price needs a quote.

What Gradwell does well

  • Per-user prices published for the phone system
  • Minutes included in each Wave plan
  • Teams add-on and Teams Direct Routing
  • In business since 1998
  • Broad range: mobile, broadband, leased lines

Where Gradwell falls short

Zurich, Switzerland Not seen on the pages checked Not stated

Best for: Companies that buy through an installer and want a local national subsidiary

  • Operating company. peoplefone group
  • Jurisdiction. Switzerland (outside the EU)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Telnyx, Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking

peoplefone is a Zurich-founded VoIP group that sells SIP trunks, a virtual PBX and landline numbers in more than 60 countries, organised through seven national subsidiaries. A customer therefore contracts with the subsidiary of their own country. The group describes an installer partner network, which means many customers are served by the integrator who set up the PBX.

The group is described as founder-owned, and it lists a Microsoft Teams product. Switzerland is outside the EU, trunk prices were not seen on the pages checked, and the structure suits buyers with an IT partner more than a developer who signs up alone. The legal entity per country should be read from the imprint before ordering.

What peoplefone does well

  • Numbers in more than 60 countries
  • Seven national subsidiaries
  • Installer partner network
  • Teams product listed
  • Founder-owned group

Where peoplefone falls short

  • Swiss base, outside the EU

Cologne, Germany Cloud PBX per user and month on a 24-month term: Essentials from EUR 6.90, Business from EUR 9.90, Enterprise from EUR 14.90 (EUR 8.90, 11.90 and 16.90 on a one-month term) 30 days, no payment details

Best for: German offices that want to add or remove trunk channels online

  • Operating company. Gamma Placetel GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. 8x8, RingCentral, Dialpad

Placetel is a service of Gamma Placetel GmbH in Cologne, which states it is supervised by the Bundesnetzagentur. The trunk offer lets a customer add or remove channels on demand through an online order portal, with a cloud PBX as the natural upgrade. Placetel belongs to the UK Gamma group, the same group that owns Gamma Telecom.

The phone system starts at EUR 6.90 per user a month for Essentials on a 24-month term, with a 30-day trial that needs no payment details, plus integrations with Teams, DATEV and CRM systems. Extras such as TAPI at EUR 5.90 are billed on top, the lowest price needs two years, and the pages checked do not state where data is hosted.

What Placetel does well

  • Entry price from EUR 6.90 per user
  • 30-day trial without payment details
  • Integrations with Teams, DATEV and CRM systems
  • German all-net flat on higher plans
  • Call charges from 1 cent a minute

Where Placetel falls short

  • Hosting location not stated
  • Lowest price needs a 24-month term
  • Extras billed separately, for example TAPI at EUR 5.90
  • Minimum of 2 users

Standout feature. Placetel lets a customer change the number of trunk channels online while contracting with a regulated German company.

#8 Gamma Telecom

Newbury, United Kingdom Quote through sales or a partner Demo on request

Best for: UK organisations with an on-premise PBX, several sites and Teams or Genesys needs

  • Operating company. Gamma Telecom Limited (Gamma Communications PLC group)
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Telnyx, ISDN lines

Gamma Telecom Limited is incorporated in England and Wales, with its principal place of business in Newbury, and sells SIP Trunks as a replacement for ISDN. A site connects over broadband, Ethernet or a private access circuit, and the page states 99.99% availability along with rerouting between two sites if one fails. The PBX can sit on site, in managed colocation, or both.

Gamma lists Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams and a Genesys BYOC Cloud option, and says it serves one in three UK businesses with cloud voice, a figure from its own page. No prices are published, buyers go through sales or a partner, coverage is centred on the United Kingdom, and data location was not stated on the pages checked.

What Gamma Telecom does well

  • UK operator with its own network
  • Private access circuit as a connection option
  • Direct Routing for Microsoft Teams
  • Genesys BYOC Cloud offered
  • Managed colocation available

Where Gamma Telecom falls short

  • No published prices
  • Sold through sales and partners
  • Coverage centred on the UK
  • Data location not stated on the pages checked

Standout feature. Gamma Telecom is the one supplier here that offers trunks over a private access circuit as a standard connection option.

#9 Bird

Amsterdam, Netherlands Trunk prices not seen on the pages checked Not stated for trunks

Best for: Developers who want a Dutch API company and strict trunk access controls

  • Operating company. Bird B.V.
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Netherlands) for customers outside the US; a US entity serves US email customers
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Telnyx, Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking

Bird publishes a developer-first SIP trunking page that lists TLS signalling on port 5061, IP allowlists, country-level dialling limits and verified caller IDs. Each of these limits who may use a trunk or where it can call, which suits teams that want to close off toll-fraud routes by default.

For customers outside the US, Bird's terms name Bird B.V. in Amsterdam, and a US entity contracts with US email customers, so the voice order form should say which company signs. Trunk prices and hosting location were not seen on the pages checked, and the company sells email, SMS and WhatsApp as well as voice.

What Bird does well

  • Dutch entity named for customers outside the US
  • IP allowlist and TLS signalling on port 5061
  • Country-level dialling limits
  • Verified caller IDs
  • Email, SMS and WhatsApp from the same company

Where Bird falls short

  • A US entity exists for US customers
  • Trunk prices not seen
  • Hosting location not stated on the pages checked
  • Built for developers rather than office phone systems

Standout feature. Bird documents country-level dialling limits on its trunks, a fraud control most other suppliers here do not mention.

#10 Colt

London, United Kingdom Contact form and datasheets, no prices shown Demo on request

Best for: Multinational enterprises consolidating voice suppliers

  • Operating company. Colt Technology Services Group Limited
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Telnyx, Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking

Colt Technology Services Group Limited, registered number 03232904 and based at Colt House in London, sells SIP Trunking to enterprises that want one supplier across countries. Its product page names Genesys Cloud, Cisco Webex, Talkdesk, Twilio Flex, Avaya Experience Platform and NICE CXone as interoperable contact-centre systems, and Microsoft Teams and Zoom as compatible UC platforms.

The company describes SRTP and TLS voice security, geo-redundant failover and a 99.999% uptime figure, and says it serves more than 3,500 customers in 29 countries, all self-reported. SIP on Demand supports online porting and extra numbers. No prices are shown, and which Colt entity signs per country was not verified; the website terms name the UK parent only.

What Colt does well

  • UK parent named in the website terms
  • Named list of tested contact-centre platforms
  • SRTP and TLS voice security
  • Porting and local numbering across several countries
  • Disaster recovery upgrade

Where Colt falls short

  • No published prices
  • Enterprise sales process
  • Contracting entity per country not verified
  • Wholesale trunking is a separate product

Standout feature. Colt is the supplier here that names the specific contact-centre platforms its trunks have been tested against.

#11 Infobip

Vodnjan, Croatia Founded 2006 Quoted per customer Demo on request

Best for: Enterprises that need voice alongside global messaging

  • Operating company. Infobip
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Croatia)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Twilio, Vonage

Infobip is headquartered in Vodnjan, Croatia, and was founded in 2006 by Silvio Kutic, Roberto Kutic and Izabel Jelenic. Its SIP trunks forward numbers from many countries to a customer PBX, and sit inside a platform that covers SMS, voice, email, WhatsApp, RCS, Viber and more than 30 channels in total.

According to the vendor, the company serves over 10,000 enterprises in more than 190 countries and has over 800 direct operator connections, and the tool page notes Gartner and IDC recognition. Pricing is quoted per customer, so a trunk-only buyer meets a platform sales process, and the breadth of the product exceeds what an office PBX needs.

What Infobip does well

  • EU-headquartered company in Croatia
  • Voice, SMS, WhatsApp and RCS under one account
  • Numbers from many countries forwarded to a PBX
  • More than 800 direct operator connections, per the vendor
  • Also offers a contact-centre product and chatbots

Where Infobip falls short

  • Price only on request
  • Platform scope is larger than a trunk-only buyer needs
  • Sales-led onboarding
  • No published trunk rates to compare

Standout feature. Infobip is the only supplier here that places SIP trunks inside a messaging platform with more than 30 channels.

How do I choose a European SIP trunk provider?

Start with the shape of your traffic. Count simultaneous calls, the countries you call most, and the direct-dial numbers you need to keep. Easybell and Placetel sell plans by channel count, DIDWW sells by the minute per destination, and Colt, Gamma Telecom and Infobip quote after a conversation. The same office can look cheap with one model and expensive with another, so price all candidates against one written assumption set.

Then check what sits on your side of the line. Gradwell holds 3CX preferred status, sipgate lists Asterisk, 3CX and Starface, Colt names tested contact-centre platforms, and Gamma Telecom and Gradwell both offer Direct Routing for Teams. A trunk that matches your PBX saves more hours than a rate that is a fraction of a cent lower.

Which European providers publish their prices?

DIDWW publishes per-destination rates, and on 31 October 2026 its page showed US local termination from $0.004 a minute, international from $0.0046 and US numbers from $1.20 a month, all in US dollars. Easybell displays channel plans from €1.95 a month for two channels after a six-month free period, though VAT treatment was not stated. Sipgate prints every price for its API add-on, from a free tier with 100 webhook calls to €29.95 a month for the L plan.

Placetel and Gradwell publish per-user prices for their phone systems rather than for trunks, with Placetel from EUR 6.90 and Gradwell from GBP 7.90 per user and month. Simwood, Gamma Telecom, Colt, Infobip and peoplefone showed no trunk prices on the pages checked, and the Bird trunk price was not seen either, so those need a quote.

Does a European trunk keep my call data out of US reach?

The contract does, with a caveat for each supplier. A trunk from DIDWW Ireland Limited, Simwood eSMS Limited, easybell GmbH or Gamma Placetel GmbH is signed under European law with a European counterparty. That does not mean every system behind it is in Europe: DIDWW's privacy notice names the USA and Singapore among processing locations, and Simwood's footer lists a Tennessee address and a Tbilisi office next to the Bristol company.

Bird adds a different wrinkle. Its terms name Bird B.V. in Amsterdam for customers outside the US and a US entity for US email customers, so the voice order form should name the entity explicitly. The safe habit across the whole category is to read the order form for the contracting company and ask in writing where call detail records are stored.

What do I do about UK and Swiss suppliers after Brexit?

Six of the eleven tools contract in the EU, four in the United Kingdom and one in Switzerland. Simwood, Gradwell, Gamma Telecom and Colt are British, and the UK holds an adequacy decision but is outside the EEA. Peoplefone is founded in Zurich, and Switzerland is outside the EU as well. For most compliance questionnaires, a British or Swiss contracting company is acceptable, but it should be recorded as such.

If your policy demands an EU entity, the shortlist is DIDWW in Ireland, easybell, sipgate and Placetel in Germany, Bird in the Netherlands and Infobip in Croatia. Note that Placetel belongs to the UK Gamma group and easybell has been part of Dstny, a Belgian group, since October 2022, so ownership and contracting entity are separate questions.

How do I migrate from Telnyx or Twilio to a European trunk?

Order the numbers first. Port requests take as long as the losing carrier needs, DIDWW states that porting in is free, sipgate lists porting under trunking and Colt offers it through SIP on Demand. Keep the old account running until each number has moved, and run a test number on the new trunk before cutover.

Then rebuild the technical settings on your PBX: credentials or IP allowlists, codecs, caller-ID rules and outbound dialling limits. Bird documents TLS on port 5061, IP allowlists and country-level dialling limits, and Simwood lets you set failover and time-of-day routing through its portal and API. If applications call a provider-specific voice API, that code is a separate migration and may justify keeping the old account for it.

When is it better not to switch carriers?

When the problem is not the contract. If an application depends on a vendor's programmable voice interface, replacing only the trunk changes little, and moving the office lines while leaving the application where it is is a sensible split. If you need numbers in countries where a European supplier has no presence, DIDWW and peoplefone list numbers in many countries, but check your specific countries rather than the headline count.

Do not switch during a number port freeze, a PBX upgrade or a peak trading period. An enterprise buyer with Colt or Gamma Telecom already under a multi-site contract should also compare the penalty for early exit with the benefit before moving, since both sell through sales-led agreements.

How we selected and ranked these 11 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the criterion. Simwood ranks first here for API-controlled trunks on a carrier-owned network, DIDWW for openly published per-minute rates, easybell and sipgate for German offices that want channel plans, Gradwell for 3CX users in the UK, and Colt for multi-country enterprises. Pick by contracting entity, price model and PBX compatibility, then confirm with a written quote.

No. DIDWW (Ireland), easybell, sipgate and Placetel (Germany), Bird (Netherlands) and Infobip (Croatia) contract in the EU. Simwood, Gradwell, Gamma Telecom and Colt are British, and peoplefone is Swiss. Each contract is with a non-US company, but not every one is inside the EU.
