Baserow started as a straightforward pitch: give teams the spreadsheet interface they already know, backed by a real database instead of a flat grid, published under MIT so nobody is locked into one vendor's cloud. Baserow B.V. is a Dutch B.V. registered in Amsterdam, and its €5M seed round in 2022 came entirely from European venture firms — INKEF Capital led it, with firstminute capital, Seedcamp and Frontline joining. No US institutional money appears in the cap table.

The product covers what an Airtable user expects — grid, gallery, kanban and calendar views, row-level permissions, a REST and webhook API, no-code automations — and Baserow's own documentation commits to hosting cloud customer data exclusively in Germany. The one inconsistency worth flagging: cloud pricing is listed in US dollars rather than euros, despite the company being Dutch.

#2 SeaTable

SeaTable GmbH was incorporated in Mainz in July 2020 by brothers Ralf and Christoph Dyllick-Brenzinger, who had previously built the file-sync tool Seafile. The company describes itself as bootstrapped and profitable, with no institutional venture round disclosed for SeaTable itself — a founder-owned structure with no PE or VC exit pressure in the picture.

SeaTable's own security page names the exact hosting chain: cloud customer data, except billing details, is stored and processed in the DE-FRA-1 and DE-MUC-1 data centres in Frankfurt and Munich, run by the Swiss-headquartered provider Exoscale, with the direct statement "your user data never leaves Europe."

The product adds kanban and Gantt views on top of the base grid, useful for project tracking alongside data storage. The caveat: unlike Baserow's fully MIT-licensed core, SeaTable's own database engine is proprietary, and a free self-hosted instance is capped at three users.
