European Alternatives to Turnitin

Looking for a European alternative to Turnitin? Turnitin's website terms are governed by the laws of California, with exclusive jurisdiction in the state and federal courts in Oakland, California. Its privacy policy has a section for users from the EEA, Switzerland and the UK and refers to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

The European plagiarism checkers below are run by companies in Germany, France, Poland, Lithuania and Belgium. They cover similarity reports, AI detection, LMS integration and published euro prices, although none of them offers Turnitin's wider range of grading and exam products.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects which tools are listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Turnitin's website terms are governed by California law, with exclusive jurisdiction in the courts of Oakland, California.
  • Turnitin's website privacy policy, updated on 26 March 2025, refers EEA, Swiss and UK visitors to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
  • PlagAware, Compilatio and Docoloc offer institutional plagiarism checking through contracting entities in Germany and France.
  • Identific publishes euro plans from EUR 0.70 per page, and Plagiatsprüfung.de sells one report from EUR 12.
  • None of the twelve European tools on this page lists a grading or secure exam product like Gradescope or ExamSoft.

Why people leave Turnitin

Turnitin is a US company that sells similarity checking and a wider set of academic integrity products to schools, universities and publishers. Its home page lists Feedback Studio for grading, Gradescope for paper-based marking, ExamSoft for secure exams, Similarity for plagiarism checks, iThenticate for researchers and publishers, and Clarity for writing insight. Most institutions meet it as the box inside their learning platform that returns a percentage.

The contract question starts with the website terms, which Turnitin says are governed by California law, with exclusive jurisdiction in the state and federal courts in Oakland. Those terms state that they do not cover the education services, which have their own terms that we could not read. The website privacy policy, last updated on 26 March 2025, has a separate section for visitors from the EEA, Switzerland and the UK and relies on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Staff and students who look beyond Turnitin usually do so for a practical reason: the student paper is personal data, the vendor sits under US law, and the price is only known after a sales conversation. We read no Turnitin price on the pages we fetched. A European checker with a public tariff makes that comparison possible before a procurement round starts.

  • The website terms put disputes in Oakland, California Turnitin's website terms say that claims about the site and its content fall under California law and that the state and federal courts in Oakland have exclusive jurisdiction. The same terms disclaim warranties and cap liability. They exclude the education services, so the clauses that matter for a school contract sit in documents we did not see. A buyer should ask for those before signing, not after.
  • The data transfer basis is a framework, not an EU address Turnitin's privacy policy for its websites names the EU-US Data Privacy Framework in its section for users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. A framework like that rests on a decision of the European Commission and on US commitments. A vendor with a registered seat in Germany, France or Lithuania needs no such framework for a student essay, because the controller is already inside the EU.
  • No price can be read on the pages we fetched The four Turnitin pages we read (home, website terms, privacy policy, contact) show no price list, so a department cannot budget from them. PlagAware, Identific, StrikePlagiarism and Plagiatsprüfung.de publish prices in euros. A published number lets a teacher test the service on one thesis before a purchasing committee ever meets.
  • One vendor now sits behind several older brands The web addresses of Ouriginal, Urkund, PlagScan and Unicheck all returned Turnitin's own website text when we fetched them, so those once separate checkers are part of Turnitin. The market that looks varied from the outside has fewer owners than the names suggest. Compilatio, PlagAware and the Polish and Lithuanian providers on this page remain separate companies with their own registrations.

What you have to replace, not just match

Turnitin is a family, so decide which part you actually use. The similarity report is the easiest part to replace: PlagAware, Compilatio, Identific and StrikePlagiarism all produce a report with sources, and several connect to Moodle or another learning platform through an API or LTI. Collusion checks between submissions exist at PlagAware. Contract cheating detection is listed by Identific.

Grading and exam products are different. Feedback Studio, Gradescope and ExamSoft have no counterpart among the twelve tools here, and none of the European checkers claims to offer them. If a faculty marks scanned exam papers in Gradescope, keep that product and replace only the similarity layer, or accept a longer search for a separate marking tool.

Programming courses are a special case. Turnitin's pages that we read do not list a code comparison feature, while Dolos from Ghent and JPlag from Germany compare student programs and are free. They never read essays, so they sit next to a text checker, not in place of one.

How each alternative compares to Turnitin

PlagAware

The German scanner that names its prices and keeps company and servers in Germany

Neu-Ulm, GermanyPrepaid ScanCredits at approx. EUR 0.06 to 0.13 per standard page (250 words, VAT included); volume licences approx. EUR 0.04 to 0.08 per page; educational licence on request; free account with a free check of up to 10 pages#1 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: German-speaking schools and publishers that want prices and a campus link in writing

Against Turnitin, PlagAware makes the commercial side visible. Prepaid credits cost approximately EUR 0.06 to 0.13 per 250-word page, volume licences approximately EUR 0.04 to 0.08, and a new account gets a free check of up to 10 pages. PlagAware GmbH in Neu-Ulm contracts under German law and states that its servers are in Germany.

On function, PlagAware lists a source report with links, a collusion check, its own submission portal, an API, Moodle, SSO and Shibboleth. That covers the similarity layer of a campus rollout. The educational licence has no public price, and the pages we read give no figure for the size of the database.

What PlagAware does better than Turnitin

  • Prices per page are public, where we found none for Turnitin
  • Contract and servers sit in Germany, not California
  • A free 10-page test needs only an account
  • Collusion checking runs through its own submission portal

Where PlagAware is a step down from Turnitin

  • No grading, exam or research integrity products
  • Educational licence price needs a quote

Standout against Turnitin. PlagAware publishes per-page prices and states that both its headquarters and its servers are in Germany.

#2

Compilatio

The French suite that splits teacher and student products and adds an AI detector

Chavanod, FranceNot shown on the pages we read; institutional offers by contact#2 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: French-speaking and southern European institutions that want AI detection inside the same contract

Compilatio SAS in Chavanod splits its offer by user: Magister serves teachers, Studium lets students check before they submit, and Gingo handles assessments. Against Turnitin, the student-facing product is the visible difference, because it lets a learner see a report without involving the teacher. The site is available in six languages.

The company lists three detectors: plagiarism, AI and altered text. LMS, API and SSO connections are listed. Prices are not shown, and the general terms may name an Italian SRL as contracting party, so a buyer has to confirm which entity signs. Hosting is described as Europe, with OVH named in the legal notice.

What Compilatio does better than Turnitin

  • Students get their own pre-submission product
  • An altered-text detector sits beside the plagiarism and AI checks
  • The company register number and share capital are published
  • The interface comes in French, Italian, Spanish and German

Where Compilatio is a step down from Turnitin

  • No price list on the pages we read
  • No exam or research integrity products
  • User and country counts are self-reported

Standout against Turnitin. Compilatio sells Studium, a student-side check, as a product of its own next to the teacher product Magister.

StrikePlagiarism

The Warsaw system with a token price in euros and corporate ranges

Warsaw, PolandIndividuals: 1 token (18,000 characters) costs 2.33 EUR, tokens valid 6 months; corporate: 0.8 to 2.5 USD/EUR per user, 2 to 5 USD/EUR per document or 0.03 to 0.10 USD/EUR per page#3 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Universities and publishers outside Poland that want a published tariff and an API or LTI route

StrikePlagiarism replaces the Turnitin checkbox with a price you can read. One token checks 18,000 characters and costs 2.33 EUR, valid for six months. Corporate accounts are quoted per user at 0.8 to 2.5, per document at 2 to 5, or per page at 0.03 to 0.10, in USD or EUR.

Plagiat.pl sp. z o.o. in Warsaw operates it, names a data protection officer and says individual checks are anonymous, with documents and reports not stored in the database. The hosting country is missing from the pages we read. The same operator sells Plagiat.pl, so a buyer deals with one company under two brands.

What StrikePlagiarism does better than Turnitin

  • A token price in euros is public
  • Individual checks are anonymous and not stored, per the vendor
  • A data protection officer is named in the privacy policy
  • API, LTI and LMS access are listed for corporate accounts

Where StrikePlagiarism is a step down from Turnitin

  • Corporate prices are ranges and depend on the contract
  • Hosting country and database sizes are missing
  • No grading or exam tools

Standout against Turnitin. StrikePlagiarism lets a single author buy one anonymous check for EUR 2.33 without any institutional contact.

Identific

The Lithuanian checker with euro plans from pay-as-you-go to institution

Vilnius, LithuaniaPay as you go EUR 0.70 per page; Team 300 EUR 38 a month (up to 300 pages); Team 600 EUR 65 a month (up to 600 pages); extra pages EUR 0.20; Institution from EUR 500#4 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Departments and small institutions that want monthly euro plans and contract cheating detection

Identific works as a metered service. Pay as you go costs EUR 0.70 per page, Team 300 is EUR 38 a month, Team 600 is EUR 65, extra pages cost EUR 0.20, and the Institution plan starts at EUR 500 by quote. Against Turnitin, that ladder lets a single department start small without a procurement process.

Lingua Intellegens UAB in Vilnius publishes its registration code and address. The check draws on a publications database, a student database and an internet database in 129 listed languages, and the offer includes AI recognition and contract cheating detection. Hosting and database sizes are not stated, and the terms page dates from April 2021.

What Identific does better than Turnitin

  • Plan prices are public, from EUR 0.70 per page
  • Contract cheating detection is part of the offer
  • LMS and API access are on every plan
  • The contracting company's code and address are published

Where Identific is a step down from Turnitin

  • Hosting country is not stated
  • The student database is only as large as its contributors, and no size is given
  • The terms page is older than the privacy policy

Standout against Turnitin. Identific puts LMS and API access into every plan, including the EUR 38 a month Team 300 plan.

Plagiat.pl

The Polish system that links to the national thesis infrastructure

Warsaw, PolandAnalysis from 1 zloty per page (Polish home page title); institutional prices not shown on the pages we read#5 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Polish universities, schools and publishers that work in Polish

Plagiat.pl is the right comparison for Polish institutions, not for international ones. Against Turnitin, its distinguishing feature is the connection to the Polish ministerial system, which a foreign vendor has no reason to build. Analysis starts at 1 zloty per page, per the Polish home page headline.

Plagiat.pl Sp. z o.o. in Warsaw, with a KRS number, runs separate offers for universities, schools, businesses and publishers, and lists detection of AI use. The English pages show a 2019 copyright line, institutional prices are missing, and two Warsaw addresses appear on legal pages. International users should look at StrikePlagiarism instead.

What Plagiat.pl does better than Turnitin

  • Polish-language checking is the core use case
  • Integration with the Polish ministerial system is offered
  • Entry price per page is stated

Where Plagiat.pl is a step down from Turnitin

  • English pages look dated
  • Institutional prices and hosting country are not shown
  • No wider product family like grading or exams

Standout against Turnitin. Plagiat.pl is the only tool here that lists a link to a national ministry system for theses.

Plagiatsprüfung.de

The Berlin one-off report with fixed prices and no account

Berlin, Germany0 to 20 pages EUR 12; 21 to 50 pages EUR 18; 51 to 80 pages EUR 24; from 81 pages EUR 30 (VAT included; one page = 2,000 characters)#6 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Students and authors who need one German thesis checked once at a known price

Plagiatsprüfung.de does one job: you upload a file, pay, and receive a report with a percentage and clickable sources. Against Turnitin, the difference is the absence of an account. Prices run from EUR 12 for up to 20 pages to EUR 30 from 81 pages, VAT included, with a page counted as 2,000 characters.

BAS Business And Science GmbH in Berlin publishes its register number and managing director. The terms promise delivery within 24 hours for files up to 300 pages. The right of withdrawal ends after delivery, and the privacy statement shows a different Berlin address than the imprint. There is no API, LMS link or class account.

What Plagiatsprüfung.de does better than Turnitin

  • A fixed euro price covers a whole thesis
  • No registration or institutional contract is needed
  • The register number and managing director are named
  • Reports link directly to each source

Where Plagiatsprüfung.de is a step down from Turnitin

  • No LMS, API or class accounts, so it cannot serve a campus
  • No withdrawal after delivery
  • Hosting country is not stated

Standout against Turnitin. Plagiatsprüfung.de turns plagiarism checking into a EUR 12 purchase that needs no account and no sales call.

Docoloc

The small Braunschweig service run on institutional licence keys

Braunschweig, GermanyLicence fees depend on the expected pages per year; minimum contract three months; price list not shown on the pages we read#7 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: German schools and chambers that want a plain licence key and a local provider

Docoloc is the opposite of a product family. Users add a document by file or web address, and an administrator authorises accounts with a licence key. Sign-in works with Microsoft or IServ, which suits German schools. Against Turnitin, it offers fewer functions and a smaller contract.

Docoloc UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co. KG in Braunschweig publishes its register numbers. Licence fees depend on expected pages per year, the minimum term is three months, and notice is two weeks. The privacy statement says data goes to no third parties. The terms give no availability guarantee and name no price list, API or LMS link.

What Docoloc does better than Turnitin

  • A three-month minimum term is short for an institutional contract
  • The privacy statement says data is not passed to third parties
  • Sign-in with IServ suits German school setups

Where Docoloc is a step down from Turnitin

  • No price list, API or LMS integration on the pages we read
  • No availability guarantee in the terms
  • A plain interface and no grading tools

Standout against Turnitin. Docoloc writes a three-month minimum term and two weeks' notice to month end into its terms.

Plagiarism Checker Online

The Karlsruhe storefront that passes scans to PlagAware for a per-page fee

Karlsruhe, GermanyFrom $0.29 per standard page (1,800 characters), pay per scan, no subscription; 10% discount code shown on the site#8 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Students who want a quick scan against PlagAware sources and a price before paying

Plagiarism Checker Online is a reseller layer in front of PlagAware. The operator, Markus Nick in Karlsruhe, sends documents to PlagAware GmbH in Germany, with web servers at Strato in Germany. Against Turnitin, you get a consumer checkout: from $0.29 per 1,800-character page, shown before payment, no registration.

The operator says download tokens expire after 48 hours and files are then deleted. Prices are in dollars, the operator is a sole trader without a register entry, and the paid AI writing tools use a US processor. Institutions have no accounts, API or class features here and should contract PlagAware directly.

What Plagiarism Checker Online does better than Turnitin

  • The page price is visible before payment
  • Scans are processed in Germany by PlagAware
  • Files are deleted after report generation, according to the operator

Where Plagiarism Checker Online is a step down from Turnitin

  • Prices are in US dollars
  • The operator is a sole trader and the AI writing tools use a US processor
  • No institutional features

Standout against Turnitin. Plagiarism Checker Online gives a student PlagAware's German scan engine without an account or a minimum purchase.

Dolos

The free Ghent code-similarity tool that complements a text checker

Ghent, BelgiumFree web application; open source under the MIT licence#9 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Programming teachers who compare student code and want an MIT-licensed, self-hostable tool

Dolos does not compete with Turnitin on essays. Team Dodona at Ghent University built it for source code: it tokenises programs with Tree-sitter, fingerprints them and shows clusters of suspect submissions, so renamed variables do not hide a copy. It runs as a web app, a CLI, a library and a Docker image.

The licence is MIT and the web application is free. Out of the box it supports Bash, C, C++, C#, Elm, JavaScript, Java, PHP, Python and TypeScript. The pages we read name no support contract and do not state where the web app is hosted, which is why self-hosting matters for sensitive coursework.

What Dolos does better than Turnitin

  • It compares programs, which Turnitin's pages we read do not list
  • It is free and open source under the MIT licence
  • Self-hosting keeps submissions on your own servers
  • Cluster dashboards show groups of suspect cases

Where Dolos is a step down from Turnitin

  • It reads source code only, not essays or theses
  • No support contract or service terms

Standout against Turnitin. Dolos groups similar student programs into clusters of suspect cases in a browser dashboard.

JPlag

The local GPL code comparison tool that never uploads student work

not stated on the pages we read, GermanyFree, open source under GNU GPL version 3#10 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Teaching teams that must keep student programs on their own machines

JPlag compares sets of programs pairwise and states that all similarities are calculated locally, so no source code or results are uploaded. Against Turnitin, a hosted service, the contrast is complete: JPlag has no accounts, no servers and no vendor contract. It is free under GNU GPL version 3.

The language list is long: Java, C, C++, C#, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Kotlin, R, Rust, Swift, Scala, LLVM IR, Scheme and EMF models, each flagged by maturity. It needs Java SE 25 and a command line. The README names no legal entity or address, only a contact at a kit.edu domain.

What JPlag does better than Turnitin

  • Nothing leaves the teacher's machine
  • Free licence under GPL-3.0
  • Obfuscated copies are still matched
  • Many programming languages are supported

Where JPlag is a step down from Turnitin

  • It needs Java and a command line
  • No legal entity or address on the pages we read
  • No hosted app, accounts or LMS link

Standout against Turnitin. JPlag states in its own documentation that no source code or result is ever uploaded online.

Plagramme

The Vilnius author tool with credit plans and a translated-text check

Vilnius, LithuaniaBasic USD 14.95 a month (10,000 credits), Student USD 29.95 a month (30,000 credits), PRO Unlimited USD 299.95 a month; 1 credit per word per check#11 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Individual authors who want a multilingual pre-check including translated plagiarism

Plagramme is a consumer tool, not an institutional system. Credits are priced per word: Basic is USD 14.95 a month for 10,000 credits, Student USD 29.95 for 30,000, PRO Unlimited USD 299.95. Against Turnitin, it offers a cross-language check and AI detection in more than 50 languages, with free scores on upload.

Lingua Intellegens UAB, which says Plagramme was established in 2011, publishes its Vilnius address in the privacy policy. The site also sells plagiarism removal and AI humanisation, which sits badly with an integrity purpose. Prices are in dollars, hosting is not stated, and no LMS integration is listed.

What Plagramme does better than Turnitin

  • A translated-plagiarism check is offered
  • Free scores appear on upload
  • Monthly plans are open to individuals without a sales call

Where Plagramme is a step down from Turnitin

  • Prices in US dollars
  • It sells plagiarism removal and AI humanisation
  • No LMS link and no hosting country

Standout against Turnitin. Plagramme bills a translated-plagiarism check at the same one credit per word as an ordinary check.

Plag.es

The Spanish-language version of the Plagramme family, priced in euros

Vilnius, LithuaniaBasic EUR 14.95 a month (10,000 credits), Student EUR 29.95 a month (30,000 credits), PRO Unlimited EUR 299.95 a month; 1 credit per word#12 in Plagiarism Checkers

Best for: Spanish-speaking students who want a pre-submission check in euros

Plag.es is the Spanish-language site of the same Vilnius company as Plagramme and Identific. Against Turnitin, the draw is a Spanish interface and euro credit plans: Basic EUR 14.95 a month, Student EUR 29.95, PRO Unlimited EUR 299.95, each credit covering one word. The first analysis of three documents is free.

The privacy policy names Lingua Intellegens UAB and the Lithuanian State Data Protection Inspectorate as complaints authority. The site says a document is never shared or stored in external databases. It offers no teacher accounts or LMS connection, and it also sells plagiarism removal and AI text humanisation.

What Plag.es does better than Turnitin

  • Spanish interface with euro prices
  • Three documents can be analysed for free
  • The complaints authority is named in the privacy policy

Where Plag.es is a step down from Turnitin

  • It adds no independence, since Plagramme and Identific share its operator
  • No institutional features or hosting statement

Standout against Turnitin. Plag.es offers a Spanish interface with credit plans priced in euros and a free analysis of three documents.

plag.es Visit Plag.es

What actually breaks when you switch

Switching away from Turnitin usually breaks three things. The first is the learning platform link: your Moodle or other LMS has an integration that must be replaced, and PlagAware, Compilatio and Identific each list their own route through LTI or an API. The second is the archive of earlier submissions, which does not travel unless the vendor agrees to an export. The third is the percentage students and staff are used to.

Similarity scores differ between checkers because sources and algorithms differ, so a paper at 12 percent in one system can read 8 or 18 in another. Update the policy on thresholds before the first term on a new checker, and brief staff that a score is a prompt to read the report, not a verdict. Also check notice periods in the current contract, since an institutional licence often runs for a full year.

Can a university stop using Turnitin without losing its archive of student papers?

The archive is the hard part. Student papers that a university submitted over the years sit in Turnitin's repository, and the pages we read do not describe an export route. Ask the vendor in writing what happens to stored submissions at the end of the contract, and whether deletion on request is possible.

The check itself is easier to move. A new provider such as Compilatio or PlagAware starts with its own source databases and, where the contract allows, your own submissions from the first day. Expect early reports to find fewer matches against old local papers, because the collusion pool starts empty.

Is a smaller European checker as thorough as Turnitin?

We cannot answer that from vendor pages. None of the European providers here states the size of its source database on the pages we read, and Turnitin gave no figure either. Plagiatsprüfung.de mentions more than 70 billion sources, which we treat as the vendor's own claim.

Run the same three papers through two checkers before you decide. Choose one paper with a known copied passage, one with translated text and one clean paper, then compare what each report finds. The result tells you more than any database figure on a website.

Which checker suits a student who only wants to test a thesis once?

A one-off service avoids the institutional contract. Plagiatsprüfung.de charges EUR 12 for up to 20 pages without an account, and Plagiarism Checker Online starts at $0.29 per standard page. Both are meant for a single file, not for a class.

Students should know that a pre-check does not replace the university's own system. The school may use a different checker with different sources, so a clean result elsewhere is no guarantee of the same percentage at hand-in.

Which one to pick

Pick PlagAware or Compilatio when a university or school needs an institutional system under an EU contract. PlagAware fits a buyer who values public prices and German servers, and Compilatio fits French-speaking or southern European staff who want an AI detector and a student product. Identific suits a department that starts with a monthly plan, and StrikePlagiarism suits international users who like a token price.

For a single document, Plagiatsprüfung.de or Plagiarism Checker Online is enough, and for programming courses Dolos or JPlag are free and run under your control. Keep Turnitin if your faculty depends on Gradescope or ExamSoft, because no European tool here replaces them. In that case replace nothing yet, and revisit when the contract ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a university that wants a German provider with public per-page prices and Moodle integration, PlagAware from Neu-Ulm. For French-speaking and southern European institutions, Compilatio from Chavanod, which adds an AI detector. For a small team that wants euro plans, Identific from Vilnius. For programming courses, Dolos or JPlag. No single tool replicates every Turnitin product.

Turnitin's website terms are governed by California law, with Oakland courts as the exclusive venue, and we list its seat as California, United States. The pages we fetched did not show a street address for the head office, so we do not state one.

Turnitin's website privacy policy has a section for users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK and mentions the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. We did not read the terms and data processing documents for its education services, so we cannot judge the contract a school signs. Ask for those documents and for the hosting location of student papers.

For source code, yes: Dolos is a free web application under the MIT licence and JPlag is free under the GPL-3.0. For essays, PlagAware offers a free account with a check of up to 10 pages, and Plagramme and Plag.es show free scores on upload. Free tiers for written work are small.

Plagiat.pl from Warsaw is built for Polish texts and links to the Polish ministerial system. StrikePlagiarism is the same operator's international product with a euro token price. Plag.es has a Spanish interface and euro credit plans. Identific lists 129 languages and Compilatio's site runs in six languages.
