Review in detail
PlagAware GmbH, registered at Brumersweg 35/1 in Neu-Ulm and entered at the Memmingen court under HRB 16671, operates the PlagAware plagiarism scanner. German law governs its contracts, and Ulm is the stated place of jurisdiction for merchants.
PlagAware sells its checks in four models: prepaid ScanCredits for individuals, volume licences for publishers and companies, educational flat rates for schools and universities, and monthly subscriptions for monitoring websites.
How PlagAware prices a plagiarism check
PlagAware counts a standard page as 250 words. Its licence overview lists approx. EUR 0.06 to 0.13 per page for prepaid credits and approx. EUR 0.04 to 0.08 per page for volume licences, VAT included.
ScanCredits have no expiry date, according to PlagAware's licence table. Educational licences carry no per-page price in the table and are quoted on request.
Where PlagAware processes documents
PlagAware states that both its company headquarters and its servers are in Germany. PlagAware argues that this puts German data protection law and German authorities in charge of any disclosure order.
PlagAware also publishes pages on document handling and retention. We did not read the retention periods themselves, so check them before a campus roll-out.
PlagAware compared with Turnitin
PlagAware covers the core of a Turnitin check: a similarity report with sources, collusion checks between submissions, an API and Moodle integration. PlagAware lists SSO and Shibboleth for campus logins.
Turnitin lists a wider product family on its home page, with grading and exam products next to similarity checking. PlagAware focuses on the check itself.
Where it falls short
PlagAware does not publish a price for its educational licence, so a university needs a quote. The size of its source database is not stated on the PlagAware pages we read. Grading and exam products like those Turnitin lists are not part of the offer. Compare with Compilatio if you need a French-language workflow.
Best suited to users of PlagAware
German and Austrian schools, universities and publishers that need an EU contracting party, VAT-inclusive page prices and a licence per institution.
