European Alternatives to FreshBooks
Looking for a European alternative to FreshBooks? FreshBooks is provided by 2NDSITE Inc. in Toronto, its terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and Canadian federal law, claims go to a sole arbitrator, and Canada is outside the EU and the EEA.
Eleven European tools cover the job for freelancers and small businesses, from companies in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Estonia: invoicing-first tools, full bookkeeping packages with VAT, and one open-source suite with a free invoicing app.
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

- FreeAgent (Edinburgh) is the closest in shape for a freelancer, with invoicing, projects and time tracking and a 30-day trial, under Scots or English law.
- Moneybird (Enschede) has a 60-day free trial and lists plans at €15, €29 and €41 a month, with timesheets and Dutch VAT returns.
- Clear Books (London) has a free sole trader plan and invoicing from £5 a month plus VAT; QuickFile (UK) has a free tier for small ledgers.
- Odoo Invoicing (Belgium) gives unlimited invoices free in its one-app plan, and Accountable (Brussels) is built for Belgian freelancers.
- Billomat, Holded, Quipu, bexio and Xolo each fit a narrower case: German entrepreneurs, Spanish businesses, Swiss small businesses, or freelancers invoicing without a company.
Why people leave FreshBooks
FreshBooks is invoicing and accounting software for freelancers and small businesses. Its pricing page lists three plans, Lite, Plus and Premium, which allow invoices to 5, 50 or unlimited clients, with expense tracking, estimates, proposals, time tracking and online payments by card, ACH bank transfer and buy-now-pay-later. On its US page the list prices are $23, $43 and $70 a month, with a $1 a month first-year offer on Lite and 80% off Plus and Premium for three months.
It is provided by 2NDSITE Inc., trading as FreshBooks, in Toronto. Its terms (last updated 7 October 2026) are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada, and any claim is referred to a sole arbitrator to the exclusion of the courts.
Only where arbitration is prohibited by law do the courts in Toronto hear it. Canada is outside the EU and the EEA, and for transfers of EEA, Swiss and UK data to the United States the privacy policy relies on the Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK Addendum.
The eleven tools here are European invoicing and accounting packages for freelancers and small businesses, from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Estonia. Many are built around one country's VAT and tax rules, so the right choice depends on where you are registered. This page says so for each one.
- Your disputes go to a Canadian arbitrator FreshBooks' terms apply Ontario law and send claims to a sole arbitrator, with Toronto courts only as a fallback where arbitration is prohibited. That is a different position from a contract with a company in your own country, under your own law and courts. The European tools here contract in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Estonia.
- Tax features are local FreshBooks' pricing page lists tax-time reports, but a European freelancer needs VAT returns, e-invoicing rules and tax forms for their own country, and we could not check how FreshBooks handles those. FreeAgent and Clear Books are built for UK tax, Moneybird for Dutch VAT, Accountable for Belgian taxes and Peppol, Quipu and Holded for Spain, and bexio for Switzerland.
- Some of these are free at the start FreshBooks has a trial and a first-year offer, but no permanent free plan on the page we read. Clear Books has a free sole trader plan, QuickFile a free tier for small ledgers, Odoo a free one-app plan with unlimited users, Accountable free mobile invoicing, and Xolo Go charges €0 a month. Free means limits, so check them before you move your books.
- What FreshBooks does better FreshBooks covers invoices, time tracking, projects, payments and, as paid add-ons, payroll and team members, all on one price list. None of the European tools is a drop-in copy. If you bill clients in the US or Canada and need its payment options, check that the European tool you pick supports your payment method.
What you have to replace, not just match
List what you actually use: invoices per month, recurring invoices, time tracking, expenses with receipts, bank feeds and which tax returns you file. Then pick a tool built for your country's tax rules, because VAT and income tax filing are where the packages differ most.
Export your clients, items and open invoices from FreshBooks and keep a copy of the PDFs for past years. Start the new tool with the next invoice number in sequence, import your customers, and run both side by side for one billing cycle before you cancel.

Best for: UK freelancers and small limited companies who bill hours and track projects

The pricing table is sized by number of ledger entries, from up to 200 upward. It lists a free level and £60 plus VAT a year as the paid price, with free unlimited users, 1 GB of storage, API access, multi-currency support and, at £15 plus VAT a year, bank feeds. It lists online payments through a customer portal, bank connection and automated follow-ups. Full bookkeeping sits in the separate Accounting app, so the free plan is an invoicing tool, not a complete accounting package.
What Odoo Invoicing does better than FreshBooks
- Belgian company with Belgian law, where FreshBooks applies Ontario law and arbitration
- Free forever for one app with unlimited users
- Peppol-certified e-invoicing
- Room to add other apps later
Where Odoo Invoicing is a step down from FreshBooks

Its sister product Xolo Leap runs an e-Residency company from €59 a month. Products differ between regions, and the per-invoice cost was not on the page.

- Multi-currency invoicing at €0 a month plus usage
Where Xolo Go is a step down from FreshBooks

What actually breaks when you switch
The hard part of leaving FreshBooks is the tax setup, not the invoices. A European tool will ask for your VAT number, your VAT scheme and your tax year, and each country's package handles them differently. Check that your filing deadlines and forms are supported before you move your books.
Take your records with you. Download the PDFs of past invoices and the client and item lists before you cancel, and decide how long you must keep records under your own country's rules. A tool that imports your open invoices saves a lot of retyping.
Free plans and trials have limits and start dates. Clear Books' free plan has no invoice creation, Accountable's is mobile only, QuickFile's depends on ledger size, and trials run from 14 days (Holded, Billomat) to 60 (Moneybird). Write down the price that applies after the offer ends.
Which of these is closest to FreshBooks?
FreeAgent is the closest in spirit: it is aimed at freelancers and small businesses, and its feature list includes invoicing, estimates, expenses, banking, projects, time tracking and sales tax. Moneybird is next, with invoices, timesheets and VAT returns in one package.
Both are built around their home country's tax rules (UK for FreeAgent, the Netherlands for Moneybird), so check that yours is supported.
Which have a free plan?
Clear Books lists a free sole trader plan for MTD Income Tax updates, with invoice creation on the £5 a month plan. QuickFile lists a free tier for the smallest ledger size. Odoo offers a free One App plan with unlimited users, and its Invoicing app sends unlimited e-invoices free. Accountable has free invoicing on mobile only, and Xolo Go is €0 a month with pay-as-you-go.
Moneybird (60 days), FreeAgent (30 days), Holded (14 days), Billomat (14 days), Quipu (15 days) and bexio (30 days) offer trials instead.
Can I track time and bill hours?
FreeAgent lists projects and time tracking in its features, and Moneybird lists timesheets for recording and claiming hours. Holded mentions project profitability tracking on its upper plans. For the others, we did not find time tracking on the pages read, so check before you switch if billing by the hour is your main use.
Does the contract really matter for invoicing software?
Your invoices, customer names and bank connections sit in the tool, so the contracting party and the law that applies matter if something goes wrong. With FreshBooks the terms apply Ontario law and arbitration. With the tools here the contracting entity is in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Switzerland or Estonia, and most name the courts of their own city.
For a one-person business the practical difference is small. It matters more if you handle other people's data, use bank feeds, or file taxes through the tool.
Which one to pick
If you are a UK freelancer who bills hours, FreeAgent is the closest to FreshBooks, and Clear Books or QuickFile are the cheap alternatives with free entry levels. If you are Dutch, Moneybird has the longest trial and public prices. If you are Belgian, Accountable or Odoo Invoicing are the natural starting points.
Billomat suits German entrepreneurs, Holded and Quipu Spanish businesses, and bexio Swiss ones. Xolo Go is the odd one out: pick it if you have no company and want to invoice in several currencies, not for full bookkeeping.
Be realistic about the gap. FreshBooks covers hours, projects and card payments in one product, and none of the eleven is a drop-in copy of its time tracking, payments and payroll together. Switch if you want a contracting party and tax rules from your own region, and keep FreshBooks if you mostly bill North American clients and need its payment options.
Frequently Asked Questions
There is no single best one, because tax rules differ by country. FreeAgent suits UK freelancers, Moneybird Dutch ones, Accountable Belgian ones, Billomat German entrepreneurs, and Quipu or Holded Spanish businesses. If you just need free invoices, Clear Books, QuickFile and Odoo Invoicing are the places to start.
No. The terms name 2NDSITE Inc. as "FreshBooks", and the privacy policy gives a Toronto address. The terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and Canada, and Canada is neither in the EU nor in the EEA. FreshBooks also lists an EU representative, FreshBooks Netherlands B.V.

FreeAgent Central Limited is registered in Scotland (SC316774), with its office at One Edinburgh Quay in Edinburgh, and its terms say it is a wholly owned subsidiary of NatWest Group Plc. If your address is in Scotland, Scots law and courts apply, otherwise English law and courts.
Xolo Go, from Xolo OÜ in Tartu, Estonia, is described as a way to invoice and get paid in multiple currencies without a registered company, at €0 a month on a pay-as-you-go basis. Its terms apply Estonian law and the Harju County Court. Check the per-invoice costs before you rely on it.
