Moneybird has spent eighteen years doing one thing carefully: making Dutch small business administration pleasant. Invoices look good without configuration, bank transactions match themselves, VAT returns are prepared from the ledger, and the accountant gets access without an export.

It is based in Enschede, hosts in the Netherlands, and its pricing is published and simple — which in this category is less common than it should be.

Invoicing and Getting Paid

Invoices carry the fields Dutch rules require, can be sent with an iDEAL payment link, and chase themselves with automatic reminders. For a freelancer, being paid faster is worth more than any accounting feature, and payment links measurably help.

Recurring invoices handle retainers and subscriptions without monthly manual work.

Bookkeeping and VAT

Bank feeds import transactions and suggest matches against invoices and receipts; a photographed receipt is read and categorised. The quarterly VAT return is prepared from the ledger, and the figures can be checked and filed without reconstructing anything.

Accountant access is built in, so your bookkeeper works in the same system rather than receiving an export.

Dutch by Design

iDEAL, Dutch VAT rules, Dutch terminology and Dutch support. These are unglamorous but they are the difference between software that fits and software you adapt to. Data stays in the Netherlands.

Limitations to Consider

Moneybird is for the Netherlands, with a Belgian version alongside, and does not serve businesses filing elsewhere. It is deliberately scoped to invoicing and bookkeeping — no inventory, no project accounting, no payroll — so a growing company will eventually need Exact Online or a full ERP. There is no self-hosting.
