European Alternatives to Adobe After Effects

Looking for a European alternative to Adobe After Effects? Adobe After Effects is a motion graphics and compositing application made by Adobe Inc., a US company, so your contract is with a US vendor. The adobe.com pages returned an access error (403) when we checked on 5 November 2026, so we state no prices or terms for it.

The European tools below cover free 2D and 3D motion graphics (Autograph, Blender), 3D motion design (Cinema 4D), real-time graphics (Notch), Lottie and UI animation (Lottielab, Linearity) and code-driven video (Remotion), with entities in Germany, the UK, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects which tools are listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Adobe After Effects is made by Adobe Inc. of San Jose, California, and its adobe.com pages returned a 403 error on 5 November 2026, so this page states no Adobe prices or terms.
  • Autograph from Maxon in Germany is the closest European tool to After Effects in working method, with shape animation, animated text, compositing and a free application according to Maxon.
  • Blender (Amsterdam), Kdenlive (Berlin) and Autograph are the three tools on this page that carry no licence fee for the main application.
  • Remotion in Zurich builds video from React code, which suits automated and templated output but not hand-keyframed animation.
  • Seven of the twelve tools are contracted with EU companies, four with UK companies and one with a Swiss company.

Why people leave Adobe After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a motion graphics and compositing application made by Adobe Inc. of San Jose, California. Designers use applications of this type to animate logos, build titles and lower thirds, composite footage and add visual effects. Because the maker is a US company, the contract, the support relationship and the legal exposure for your project files all sit with a US vendor.

We tried to read Adobe's own pages for this comparison. The adobe.com pages returned an access error (403) when we checked on 5 November 2026, so this page quotes no Adobe prices, plan names or terms. Anything we say about the incumbent is limited to its maker, its location and what the product category does. Check Adobe's current terms on its own site before you decide.

The twelve tools below come from two different directions. Some are European answers to the same job: Autograph, Blender, Cinema 4D and Notch. Others replace only the narrower jobs that people often run through After Effects, such as Lottie files for apps, templated video from code, whiteboard explainers or phone editing.

  • The contract is with a US vendor Adobe Inc. is headquartered in San Jose, California. Of the twelve tools on this page, seven are contracted with companies inside the EU (in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy and Romania), four with UK companies and one with a Swiss company. If your procurement rule is a European counterparty, that split is the first filter, and the second is whether the jurisdiction is an EU member state or an adequacy country.
  • Free tools now cover real motion work Blender costs nothing and is released under the GPL. Kdenlive has no paid tier. Maxon describes Autograph as free 2D and 3D motion graphics software. Lottielab has a free plan with unlimited files, and Remotion is free for individuals and companies of up to three people. A hobbyist, student or very small studio can therefore test a European workflow without opening a budget line.
  • One-off licences are available where a subscription is not wanted Linearity lists a perpetual licence next to its free tier and a subscription from about EUR 8 a month. Kdenlive and Blender carry no licence fee at all. Freelancers who dislike renting software can pick a tool whose cost does not recur, and compare it with what they pay Adobe today, which we could not read from Adobe's own pages.
  • Many jobs never needed a full compositor A product designer who ships a spinner to an app needs a Lottie file, not a compositing suite. A marketing team that produces forty near-identical videos needs templates and a render queue. A trainer wants a drawn explainer. Lottielab, Remotion, Powtoon and VideoScribe each cover one of these jobs on its own terms, which can be cheaper and faster to learn than a general tool.

What you have to replace, not just match

Replacing After Effects means replacing a working method, not only a feature list. Compositions are built from stacked layers with keyframes, and projects often depend on third-party plugins and scripts. Autograph is the closest in method and lists Red Giant OFX tools and Universe plugins, but those need a licence. Notch works from a node graph and Remotion from React code, so both ask you to learn a different way of building a scene.

Project files are the hard part. Maxon's pages say Autograph does not open After Effects projects, and none of the other pages we read promise an import, so assume every composition has to be rebuilt. What carries over is the source material: Autograph reads SVG and PSD files, Lottielab imports from Figma, and Cinema 4D connects natively to After Effects according to Maxon, which helps if you keep a mixed pipeline during the move.

Count the outputs too. If you export Lottie files for apps, check that your new tool exports Lottie on the plan you intend to pay for, because Lottielab lists Lottie export under Pro. If a client expects a delivery format, test a short render before you commit a whole season of work.

How each alternative compares to Adobe After Effects

#1

Blender

the free 3D suite for people who also model and animate in 3D

Amsterdam, NetherlandsFree of charge; Blender states its main income is Development Fund memberships and one-time donations#2 in Video Editing

Best for: Artists who already work in 3D and want the edit and masks in the same file

Blender is made by Stichting Blender Foundation in Amsterdam, which was established in 2002, and the program is free of charge. The source code is licensed under GPL version 2 or later. Blender states that everything you create, including movies and project files, belongs to you and can be used commercially, a clean answer when a client asks who owns the output.

Against After Effects, Blender starts from 3D, and its video editor is one workspace in a large interface. That editor provides keyframes, masks, adjustment layers, transitions and up to 32 slots. Anyone moving from layer-based 2D title work will need time to learn the interface before the first animated logo.

What Blender does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Costs nothing and carries no subscription to cancel
  • Handles real 3D scenes, which a 2D compositor does not
  • Runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, with LTS releases carrying two years of updates
  • Dutch foundation with a published address, against a US vendor

Where Blender is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Flat 2D motion work takes more steps in an interface built around 3D
  • The video editor stops at 32 slots
  • No vendor support desk; the project lives on memberships and donations

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Blender is the only tool here where full 3D scenes and a video timeline share one free file.

Autograph

the closest working method to After Effects among the European tools

Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, GermanyFree access to Autograph (Maxon's page wording); Universe plugins and Red Giant OFX tools need a licence#2 in Motion Graphics Software

Best for: Motion designers who want a layer-based tool with shapes, text and compositing, without a licence fee

Autograph is published by Maxon Computer GmbH of Bad Homburg vor der Hoehe, part of the Nemetschek Group. Maxon's page describes free access to the application. It provides a shape engine and motion paths, animated text that can switch to a 3D extruded mesh, and compositing and VFX next to a 3D environment.

Maxon says SVG files from Illustrator and Figma and PSD files from Affinity and Photoshop import directly, and one composition can render in several formats. It does not open After Effects projects, so compositions must be rebuilt. The Red Giant OFX tools and Universe plugins need a licence, and the privacy text lists US group entities and payment processors.

What Autograph does better than Adobe After Effects

  • German publisher with a published address, against a US vendor
  • Application listed as free by Maxon, where plugins are the paid part
  • Responsive compositions render one project in several formats
  • Text can become a 3D extruded mesh in one step

Where Autograph is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Smaller community and far fewer tutorials and plugins than After Effects
  • Opens no After Effects project files, so work is rebuilt
  • Platforms and hosting are not stated on the pages we read

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Autograph combines motion design, compositing and a 3D environment in one free application from a German publisher.

Cinema 4D

the 3D motion design partner that connects to After Effects

Germany, GermanySee maxon.net (not shown in server-rendered text)#2 in 3D Modeling and Rendering Software

Best for: Studios that build 3D titles and broadcast graphics and need one application for modelling and rendering

Cinema 4D is Maxon's application for modelling, animation, simulation and rendering, with MoGraph and procedural tools aimed at broadcast graphics, brand animation and title sequences. The plan lists the Redshift renderer, Capsules and five Team Render nodes. Maxon says the application connects natively to After Effects.

That native link makes it a companion during a gradual move rather than a clean break. The maxon.net terms name Maxon Computer GmbH, but other Maxon sites name a US company, so check which store you buy from. Cinema 4D is commercial only, needs a MyMaxon account, and we could not read its price.

What Cinema 4D does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Adds true 3D modelling, simulation and Redshift rendering to a motion workflow
  • Team Render nodes included in the plan for distributed rendering
  • Contracting entity on maxon.net is a German GmbH
  • Works with After Effects through a native connection during a staged migration

Where Cinema 4D is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Commercial licence only, with no free plan found
  • Some Maxon sites contract with a US company
  • Not a 2D compositor, so it does not replace After Effects alone

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Cinema 4D is the one tool here that Maxon says connects natively to After Effects, which eases a staged move.

Notch

the real-time option for live visuals and virtual production

London, United KingdomPrices shown per country on notch.one (USD for US visitors); amounts not captured on the pages we read#4 in Motion Graphics Software

Best for: Visual artists who render and composite in real time for events, broadcast and installations

Notch is software from 10bit FX Limited, registered in England and Wales under number 09727850, with its office in London. It builds scenes in a node graph with a real-time viewport, so a change shows immediately rather than after a preview render. The vendor lists GPU particles, volumetrics, 2D compositing and green screen keying.

Against After Effects, the working method changes more than the output. Instead of stacked layers you connect nodes, and the vendor positions the tool for concerts, installations and virtual production alongside motion design. Notch Blocks play back in major media servers according to the vendor. Prices and platform requirements were not captured on the pages we read.

What Notch does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Shows changes in a real-time viewport instead of waiting for a preview render
  • Particle engine and volumetrics built into the scene graph
  • Notch Blocks play in media servers used for live shows
  • UK company with number and registered office published

Where Notch is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Node workflow takes longer to learn than a layer stack
  • Price amounts and platform requirements were not captured
  • UK company, outside the EEA, with a terms page directed at the United Kingdom

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Notch renders in real time, so a motion designer can change a scene while it plays on a media server.

Linearity

vector design with simple animation on Mac and iPad

Vienna, AustriaFree tier / Pro from about €8/month / perpetual licence available#7 in Design & Photo Editing

Best for: Designers on Apple devices who draw vectors and animate them for apps and the web

Linearity, formerly Vectornator, comes from Linearity GmbH in Vienna. Curve handles vector illustration and Move turns those designs into animation, which exports to video, GIF or Lottie. Both were designed for Apple Pencil and touch. Pricing runs from a free tier through a subscription from about EUR 8 a month to a perpetual licence.

Compared with After Effects, Move is a far simpler animation tool, and Linearity is limited to Apple platforms. It fits designers whose animation is a logo, an icon or an app transition drawn in the same program. The company is small, has repositioned its product more than once.

What Linearity does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Draws and animates in one tool chain, without an export and import cycle
  • Built for Apple Pencil and iPad rather than ported to it
  • Perpetual licence available next to the subscription
  • Exports Lottie for apps and the web

Where Linearity is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Apple platforms only, so no Windows or Linux
  • Animation tool is far simpler than a full compositor
  • Small company with a history of repositioning

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Linearity is the only tool here that draws vectors and animates them on an iPad with Apple Pencil.

Remotion

video as React code for teams that automate output

Zurich, SwitzerlandFree License for individuals and companies of up to 3 people; Company License pay according to usage; Automators USD 0.01 per render with USD 100 a month minimum#6 in Motion Graphics Software

Best for: Developers who generate many personalised or templated videos from data

Remotion is made by Remotion AG, Neunbrunnenstrasse 38, 8050 Zurich, and its terms are governed by Swiss law. A developer writes React components and the framework renders frames into video, with a Studio for previewing. The vendor says parameterised templates and server-side or Lambda rendering handle bulk output.

It replaces the scripted, repeated jobs that teams sometimes run through After Effects and a render farm, not hand animation. The Free License covers individuals and companies of up to three people. Larger companies pay by usage, and the Company License amount was not captured. The licence is proprietary, and the vendor says rendering can run on your own infrastructure.

What Remotion does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Renders thousands of variants from data, which hand-built compositions do not
  • Free for individuals and companies of up to three people
  • Rendering can run on infrastructure you control
  • Swiss company with published address and governing law

Where Remotion is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Requires coding in React, so designers cannot animate by hand
  • Proprietary licence rather than open source
  • Company License price was not captured

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Remotion treats a video as code, which makes it the only tool here built for automated bulk rendering.

Lottielab

the browser tool for Lottie animation in apps and websites

not stated on the pages we read (United Kingdom law applies), United KingdomFree plan; Pro per editor a month billed annually; Enterprise on request (amounts not readable on the pages we read, see website)#7 in Motion Graphics Software

Best for: Product designers who deliver UI animation as Lottie files and share a team library

Lottielab Ltd runs a browser-based Lottie editor. Designers import from Figma or start blank, animate, and export. The free plan lists unlimited files, Lottie and SVG upload, Figma import and GIF and MP4 export. Pro adds Lottie export, 4K video, shared files, comments, a team library and Lottie hosting with a CDN.

Lottielab publishes a comparison with After Effects and targets the UI animation that designers otherwise export through a Lottie plugin. It does not do compositing, keying or 3D. United Kingdom law governs its terms, and we found no postal address, data location or readable prices on the pages we read. The vendor's figure of 500,000 designers is its own claim.

What Lottielab does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Runs in a browser with a free plan that has no file limit
  • Imports from Figma, which the product design workflow already uses
  • Lottie hosting with a CDN on Pro, so no separate hosting step
  • Comments and a shared library for teams on Pro

Where Lottielab is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Not a video compositing tool; no keying or 3D
  • Lottie export needs the Pro plan
  • No postal address or price amounts on the pages we read

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Lottielab puts Figma import, Lottie export and CDN hosting in one browser tool.

Alight Motion

keyframed motion design on a phone or tablet

Milan, Italynot shown on the pages we read#8 in Motion Graphics Software

Best for: Social video creators who animate and add effects on a phone or tablet

Alight Motion is a mobile app for phones and tablets, with iOS and Android store listings referenced. The vendor describes layers of graphics, video and audio, vector and bitmap editing, more than 100 effect building blocks and keyframes for all settings. Its privacy policy names Bending Spoons S.p.A. in Milan as controller under the GDPR.

Against After Effects it covers quick social and mobile work, not long-form compositing, scripting or a plugin ecosystem. The site mentions no desktop version, and we saw no price or hosting location. One loose end: the homepage still carries a copyright line for Alight Creative, Inc (2019 to 2021), while the privacy policy names the Italian company.

What Alight Motion does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Works on a phone or tablet without a desktop workstation
  • Keyframes for all settings in a mobile app
  • Controller named in the privacy policy is an Italian company under the GDPR

Where Alight Motion is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • No desktop version mentioned, so no scripting or plugin libraries
  • Pricing and hosting not shown on the pages we read
  • Homepage ownership line is out of date

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Alight Motion brings keyframes for every setting to a phone screen.

The free plan is limited to 720p and three minutes with a watermark, Lite costs USD 15 a month on yearly billing and Professional USD 40. Prices are in dollars, and the pages we read do not state a data location.

What Powtoon does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Templates and characters produce a first video within hours
  • Screen and camera recording are built in
  • Published plan prices, which we could not read for Adobe
  • Free plan to try the platform before paying

Where Powtoon is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • No keyframes, compositing or expressions
  • Free plan carries a watermark; plans are priced in USD and billed yearly
  • Some AI features name non-European providers

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Powtoon is the only tool here that bundles templates, screen recording and AI doc-to-video for non-designers.

VideoScribe

drawn whiteboard explainers, one narrow job done quickly

Bristol, United KingdomFree trial; subscription prices not shown on the pages we read#10 in Motion Graphics Software

Best for: Teachers and trainers who want hand-drawn style explainers without learning a compositor

VideoScribe is the flagship product of Sparkol Ltd, registered in England and Wales under number 06762963 with its office in Bristol. Sparkol calls it whiteboard animation software for anyone, regardless of skill, and quotes over 2 million users, which is its own figure. A free trial exists, and Sparkol also sells training and video production.

Against After Effects it covers one narrow use, drawn explainer animation. Compositing, keying and effects are not part of it. Sparkol offers subscriptions and team subscriptions, but we could not read the prices or the supported platforms. Sparkol also lists a US phone line, though its privacy policy names Sparkol Ltd as the entity.

What VideoScribe does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Quick to learn, with no compositing concepts to master
  • Free trial before any subscription
  • Vendor also offers training and production services

Where VideoScribe is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Whiteboard style only, with no effects pipeline
  • Prices and platforms not shown on the pages we read

Standout against Adobe After Effects. VideoScribe produces drawn-hand explainers with a short learning curve and nothing more.

Kdenlive

a free video editor for the cut that surrounds your motion graphics

Berlin, GermanyFree of charge: the project states there are no licence fees, no registrations or subscriptions and no premium features that require payment; development is supported by donations#1 in Video Editing

Best for: Editors who need a free timeline with titles and effects on Linux, Windows or macOS

Kdenlive is developed by the KDE community, and KDE e.V., a registered non-profit in Berlin (VR31685), is the legal entity behind it. The project states there are no licence fees, no registration and no premium features. It is released under the GNU General Public License and runs on Linux, Windows, macOS and BSD.

Kdenlive is an editor, not a compositor. It offers a virtually unlimited number of video and audio tracks and proxy editing for 4K footage, which suits the edit that wraps your animated clips. It will not replace layer-based animation, and a small, mostly volunteer team means no support contract. On macOS it requires version 13 Ventura or newer.

What Kdenlive does better than Adobe After Effects

  • No licence fee, account or registration to download it
  • Virtually unlimited tracks and proxy editing for 4K footage
  • Runs on Linux, Windows, macOS and BSD with Apple Silicon and Intel Mac builds

Where Kdenlive is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Not a motion graphics or compositing tool
  • No commercial support contract and no hosted collaboration
  • Needs macOS 13 or newer

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Kdenlive is the only tool here that gives a fully free multi-track edit with no premium tier.

Iasi, RomaniaFree plan at EUR 0; on monthly billing Starter EUR 17, Creator EUR 36 and Business EUR 63 per seat per month; on yearly billing EUR 8, EUR 16 and EUR 28 per seat per month#4 in Video Editing

Best for: Teams that edit and caption video together in the browser on any device

Flixier is run by Flixier SRL in Iasi, Romania, and the terms are governed by Romanian law. It works in the browser on a Chromebook, Mac, PC or tablet, with rendering on Flixier's servers. Plans are published: a free plan at EUR 0, then Starter, Creator and Business per seat, from EUR 8 a month on yearly billing.

It generates captions and translates subtitles in more than 130 languages, and team members can comment on the timeline at the second they refer to. Compared with After Effects it does cut, caption and share work, not compositing. The free plan adds a watermark and caps exports at 10 minutes a month at 720p, and the privacy policy names no hosting region.

What Flixier does better than Adobe After Effects

  • Runs in the browser on a Chromebook or tablet
  • Every plan price is published in euro
  • Captions and subtitle translation in more than 130 languages
  • Timeline comments tied to the exact second

Where Flixier is a step down from Adobe After Effects

  • Not a compositing or motion graphics tool
  • Free plan has a watermark and a 10 minute monthly export limit at 720p
  • Privacy policy names no hosting provider or region

Standout against Adobe After Effects. Flixier lets reviewers comment on the timeline at the exact second a note refers to.

What actually breaks when you switch

The first break is the project file. None of the tools on this page promises to open an After Effects composition, and Maxon's pages say Autograph does not. Budget time to rebuild live projects, and keep the After Effects licence running for old files until the last one is delivered. Whether Adobe lets you keep opening them after cancellation is something we could not read from its pages.

The second break is the ecosystem around the tool. Plugins, scripts, presets and tutorial libraries do not move with you, and Autograph's pages show a smaller community than After Effects. For small teams, the cost shows up as retraining. For automated pipelines, the cost is a rewrite: a script that drove After Effects becomes React code in Remotion, or a template in Powtoon, and has to be tested again.

Can I open my After Effects projects in a European tool?

Not directly, as far as the pages we read show. Maxon's Autograph material says the application does not open After Effects projects, and we found no import promise for Blender, Notch, Lottielab, Alight Motion or the other tools. Plan to rebuild each composition from its source artwork.

Make the rebuild smaller by keeping the source files. Autograph accepts SVG from Illustrator and Figma and PSD files, Lottielab imports from Figma, and Cinema 4D has a native connection to After Effects according to Maxon. Start with one finished project, rebuild it in the new tool, and time how long it takes before you move the rest.

Is there a free alternative to After Effects?

Yes, for several kinds of work. Autograph is free according to Maxon's own page, Blender is free under the GPL and Kdenlive has no paid tier. Lottielab has a free plan, Remotion is free for individuals and companies of up to three people, and Powtoon has a free plan with a watermark and a 720p limit.

Free does not mean the same job. Autograph and Blender are the options for compositing and 3D, Lottielab is for UI animation, Remotion needs a developer, and Powtoon is a template tool. Pick by the output you deliver, then check the plugin licences, because Autograph's Red Giant and Universe plugins need a paid licence.

Which one to pick

For layer-based motion graphics with a European contract, test Autograph first and use Cinema 4D alongside it for 3D. If your work is mostly 3D or you want a zero-cost route, try Blender. For live and event visuals, Notch is the specific answer, and it asks for a new way of working.

For narrower jobs, choose by output. Lottielab or Linearity for app animation, Remotion for programmatic video, Powtoon or VideoScribe for explainers, Alight Motion for phone work, and Kdenlive or Flixier for the edit around the animation. If you need After Effects compatibility itself, none of these removes that dependency, and the honest answer is to move one project at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

By working method, Autograph from Maxon in Bad Homburg, Germany, because it is layer based with shape animation, text and compositing. For 3D-led work, Cinema 4D (Maxon) or Blender (Amsterdam). For Lottie files, Lottielab or Linearity. For automated video, Remotion from Zurich. The answer depends on the output you deliver, not on a single ranking.

Adobe After Effects is made by Adobe Inc., a US company based in San Jose, California. We could not read Adobe's own terms or pricing pages, which returned a 403 error on 5 November 2026, so we do not state where it processes data or what its plans cost.

Partly. Blender is a free 3D creation suite from the Dutch Stichting Blender Foundation, and its video editor offers keyframes, masks, adjustment layers and 32 slots. It is not built as a layer-based compositor, so expect a different interface and more effort for flat 2D title work.

Yes. Lottielab from the United Kingdom lists Lottie export on its Pro plan and imports from Figma, and Linearity from Vienna exports animation to Lottie, video and GIF. Both are aimed at app and web animation, not at video compositing.
