Best for: Freelancers, schools and studios that want modelling, animation and rendering in one program with no licence fee
Blender is a free and open source 3D creation suite maintained by Stichting Blender Foundation in Amsterdam. For this category the relevant parts are modelling, sculpting and retopology, the Cycles path tracer for rendering, and a Python API, and the same program also contains a video editor with masking and colour grading. Compared with Autodesk Maya it is the only entry that spans all four classic stages without a second purchase.
The foundation was established in 2002, and the Blender Institute in Amsterdam employs the core developers.
Source code is under the GPL version 2 or later and binaries under version 3 or later, and Blender states that everything you create, including movies and project files, is your sole property and may be used commercially. The download page listed 5.2.2 LTS, released on 15 September 2026, with two years of LTS updates. There is no vendor support desk, because the project is funded through Development Fund memberships and donations.
What Blender does well
- Blender costs nothing, with source code under GPL version 2 or later
- Stichting Blender Foundation is a Dutch foundation in Amsterdam, established in 2002
- The Blender video editor includes luma waveform, chroma vectorscope and histogram displays
- Blender states that all output, including movies, is the sole property of the user and may be used commercially
- Blender offers LTS releases with two years of updates, for Windows, macOS and Linux
Where Blender falls short
- Blender is a 3D suite first; the video editor is one part of a much larger interface
- The Blender video editor is limited to 32 slots for video, images, audio, scenes, masks and effects
- The Blender download page lists macOS for Apple Silicon only
- Blender has no vendor support desk; the project is funded through memberships and donations
Standout feature. Blender is the only tool in this category that replaces modelling, sculpting, animation and rendering with one free, GPL-licensed program from a foundation in Amsterdam.

Best for: Motion designers and 3D generalists who want one application for modelling, animation and rendering
Cinema 4D is Maxon's application for modelling, animation, simulation and rendering, with a procedural toolset called MoGraph that targets broadcast graphics, brand animation and title sequences. The Maxon page lists the Redshift renderer, five Team Render nodes and Capsules in the plan, and says a Redshift subscription alone does not include the Team Render nodes. Of the commercial tools here it overlaps with Autodesk Maya on the most stages.
The terms of use on maxon.net name Maxon Computer GmbH in Germany, yet other Maxon properties such as the Red Giant store name Maxon Computer Inc, so the invoicing entity depends on where you buy. Use of the application requires a MyMaxon account and acceptance of the Maxon EULA. The checked page text showed no price, and a free plan was not found, so Blender remains the zero-cost route.
What Cinema 4D does well
- Modelling, animation, simulation and rendering in one application
- Redshift renderer in the plan
- Five Team Render nodes included
- After Effects integration
- maxon.net terms name a German GmbH
Where Cinema 4D falls short
- Price not shown in checked page text
- Some Maxon sites contract with a US company
- Commercial licence only, no free plan found
- Account registration required
Standout feature. Cinema 4D bundles a motion-graphics toolset, the Redshift renderer and five Team Render nodes into one commercial plan from a German GmbH.

Best for: Visualisation artists who need a renderer that works inside their existing 3D or CAD application
V-Ray is a renderer from Chaos, not a modelling program: it plugs into CAD and 3D applications and renders stills and animations on the CPU, the GPU or both, with a real-time viewport and distributed rendering. Where Cinema 4D bundles a renderer, V-Ray is the part you add to a host application you already own, which makes it the logical swap when only the rendering step needs a European vendor.
Chaos lists a 30-day trial of the full version with up to 15,000 assets and materials, Veras AI and 100 AI credits. According to the Chaos EULA, customers outside the USA contract with Chaos Software GmbH in Karlsruhe, US customers with Chaos Software, Inc., and the trademark sits with Chaos Software EOOD in Bulgaria. The pricing text did not give a clear V-Ray price, and AI features consume credits.
What V-Ray does well
- CPU, GPU and hybrid rendering
- 30-day trial of the full version
- Real-time viewport
- Works with many host applications
- German entity for customers outside the USA
Where V-Ray falls short
- Renders only, no modelling
- US customers contract with a US company
- Price not clear in checked text
- AI features consume credits
Standout feature. V-Ray is the renderer on this list that offers CPU, GPU and hybrid modes inside many different host applications.

Shapr3D is a direct 3D modelling tool for precise solid parts, running on Windows, macOS, iPadOS and visionOS. It includes sketches with constraints, 2D technical drawings and exchange in STEP, Parasolid and IGES, which places it nearer to product design and engineering than to the character and effects work that Autodesk Maya is known for. It is the reference point for hardware designers who just want a lighter modeller.
The terms name Shapr3D UK Limited, registered in England under company number 14950206, while the privacy policy says the provider is based in Budapest. The pricing page lists a free Basic plan with up to two projects, Pro at $299 per editor seat billed annually, excluding VAT, and an Enterprise tier with single tenant, private cloud or on-premises storage. DWG appears as an import format only, and the UK is outside the EEA.
What Shapr3D does well
- Free plan
- Runs on iPad and desktop
- Parasolid, STEP and IGES exchange
- Enterprise private cloud or on-premises options
- 2D technical drawings included
Where Shapr3D falls short
- Prices in US dollars
- DWG import only, no DWG export listed
- Not for 2D drafting or BIM

Best for: Architects and designers who need quick visuals from CAD or BIM models
Lumion is a real-time rendering application that turns a CAD or BIM model into images, animations and 360 panoramas. Users import a model, add terrain, nature and objects from the asset library, apply effects and render, with a real-time ray tracing preview for light, reflections and shadows. A free LiveSync plug-in keeps the scene connected to tools such as SketchUp and Revit, and an AI upscaler reaches 16K.
Lumion is sold by Act-3D B.V. of Sassenheim, registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under number 27343208, and the terms of service apply Dutch law. Those terms also name Lumion B.V., so ask which entity invoices you. Lumion Cloud is used for sharing with teams and clients, the product is listed for Windows, and the pricing page was not readable in the server-rendered text.
What Lumion does well
- Dutch contracting entity
- LiveSync with CAD and BIM tools
- Real-time ray tracing preview
- Cloud sharing for reviews
- Images, animation and panoramas
Where Lumion falls short
- Needs a model from another tool
- Price not shown in checked text
