Open Source (Originally Strasbourg, France)
Founded 2003
Free (Open Source)

Best for: Technical teams that want to host the call and keep every file on their own server
Jitsi Meet is an open-source video meeting system that began in Strasbourg in 2003 under Emil Ivov and is now stewarded by 8x8, Inc. under the Apache 2.0 licence. Hosts and participants need no account. Recording can go to a local file or to cloud storage, and a component called Jibri records and streams on the server side.
The public meet.jit.si service runs on servers that 8x8 operates, so the strongest privacy position comes from installing Jitsi on your own infrastructure, for example in an EU data centre. That needs real administration skill. The pages we read mention no separate tracks per speaker, and large meetings call for careful configuration.

- Open source under Apache 2.0, code open to audit
- No account for hosts or guests
- Can be installed on your own EU server
- Recording to a local file or your own storage
- Lobby and password protection need no registration

- Self-hosting demands technical knowledge
- Meetings above roughly 100 people need tuning
- SSO and analytics need extra configuration
Standout feature. Jitsi Meet is the only tool in this category whose full server software you can install and run yourself.

The free plan allows unlimited events for up to 30 attendees and 20 minutes each. Pro costs about EUR 79 per month for up to 100 attendees and 4 hours per event. Livestorm places data in EU data centres. It is a webinar tool rather than a podcast studio, and custom domains and SSO need higher plans.
