European MES Software

Manufacturing execution systems record what happens on the shop floor: orders, machine states, quality checks, material and traceability. European vendors from Germany, Denmark, Estonia and Portugal cover everything from OEE monitoring to multi-site MES, and a European contracting entity keeps production data under EU or UK law.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Evocon, an Estonian company, publishes per-machine prices from €159 a month, which makes it the easiest MES-adjacent tool here to budget before a sales call.
  • Factbird of Copenhagen sells production insights, connected operations and knowledge modules separately, with prices shown in US dollars.
  • MPDV of Mosbach states that its cloud services process data exclusively in certified EU data centers, and GFOS of Essen names Germany for its own knownCloud.
  • Critical Manufacturing in Portugal contracts under Portuguese law, but its owner since 2018 is ASMPT, which is not a European group.
  • AVEVA MES is contracted through AVEVA Group Limited in Cambridge, UK, a wholly owned Schneider Electric SE subsidiary, so UK law with an adequacy decision applies instead of EU membership.

European manufacturing execution system (MES) software records orders, machine states, quality checks and material genealogy on the shop floor, and choosing a vendor that contracts under EU, UK or Danish law keeps production data, support agreements and any dispute inside one European legal area.

  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. GE Proficy Smart Factory (OEE and monitoring use), Rockwell FactoryTalk, Plex

Evocon is an Estonian OEE and shift-tracking product that treats the machine as the unit of billing: each plan costs a fixed monthly sum per connected machine, between €159 and €319 depending on plan and contract length. Dashboards show running time, stops with reasons, scrap and OEE, and the licence states unlimited users, so the cost does not grow with the number of operators who look at a screen.

The contracting company is Evocon OÜ in Estonia, and the vendor states ISO/IEC 27001:2022 recertification, a CyberVadis rating of Mature in 2024 and a published sub-processor list. Hosting location is not stated, and scheduling, genealogy and recipe control are not listed. Integrations, sensors, cables and on-site visits are charged outside the licence, which matters when you compare it with an all-in MES quote.

What Evocon does well

  • Per-machine prices published for all three plans
  • Lower rate on 3-year agreements
  • ISO/IEC 27001:2022 recertification stated

  • Operating company. PSI Software SE
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. GE Proficy Smart Factory, Plex

PSIpenta/MES is the MES of PSI Software SE in Berlin, registered at Charlottenburg under 255242, which sells software for energy, production and logistics. The module tracks raw materials, intermediate products and finished goods by quantity and plans sequences per work center against finite capacities, with graphical drag-and-drop workflows that production engineers can change without programming.

An Order Management module lets the MES run beneath an ERP other than PSIpenta ERP, although the pairing with PSI's own ERP is where it fits best. Named references are in machine building, tooling and plastics, and the company describes mid-sized manufacturers as its users. Pricing, cloud options and hosting are not stated on the pages checked, and regulated or multi-site plants are a weaker fit.

What PSIpenta/MES does well

  • Finite-capacity scheduling per work center
  • Graphical workflow modelling
  • Order management layer for third-party ERP
  • Berlin-registered SE
  • Reference customers in machine building and tooling

Where PSIpenta/MES falls short

#10 AVEVA MES

Cambridge, United Kingdom Pricing on request Demo on request

Best for: Process and hybrid manufacturers with an existing AVEVA or Schneider Electric landscape

  • Operating company. AVEVA Group Limited
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. GE Proficy Smart Factory, Rockwell FactoryTalk, Plex

AVEVA MES comes from AVEVA Group Limited, registered in Cambridge, UK under 2937296 and, according to its privacy policy, wholly owned by Schneider Electric SE of France. It offers a composable operator interface, low-code workflow modelling, production control, track and trace, OEE-based performance management and multi-site cloud analytics in a hybrid architecture.

The MES is one product in a catalogue that includes SCADA, historians and asset performance management, which is why plants already on AVEVA software evaluate it first. Contracts depend on the local AVEVA entity, UK law applies through an adequacy decision and not EU membership, hosting is not stated, and pricing is on request. It is not an independent challenger.

What AVEVA MES does well

  • Composable, low-code operator interface
  • Hybrid cloud architecture
  • Integrates with the wider AVEVA portfolio
  • UK registered company
  • Multi-site analytics in the cloud

Where AVEVA MES falls short

  • Pricing on request
  • Not independent (owned by Schneider Electric)
  • Hosting not stated
  • UK, not EU, jurisdiction

Standout feature. AVEVA MES is the only tool here that sits in the same product family as SCADA and historian software, under a French parent.

Do we need a full MES, or is OEE monitoring enough?

The deciding question is whether the software must control production or only observe it. Evocon and Factbird record machine states, stops, scrap and OEE, and Factbird adds digital checks and a skills matrix. Neither lists scheduling or material genealogy, so a plant that must prove which batch went into which part needs one of the larger systems.

FASTEC 4 PRO, MPDV HYDRA X, GFOS.Smart Manufacturing, iTAC.MOM.Suite and PSIpenta/MES add planning, quality and traceability modules. A practical path is to start with an OEE tool on two lines, see which losses matter, and then scope an MES around those findings instead of a feature checklist.

How do European MES vendors price their products?

Only two vendors publish a number. Evocon charges per machine and per month, from €159 on a three-year agreement up to €319 for Enterprise on one year, with the IIoT device rented at €15 to €19 a month. Factbird lists dollar prices per line and per site, a $1000 base fee and a 2% support fee, so check the euro amount before budgeting.

FASTEC, GFOS, FORCAM ENISCO, MPDV, iTAC, Critical Manufacturing, PSI and AVEVA quote on request. For those, ask for a priced pilot on one line, a statement of what recurring fees follow, and the cost of each added module, because the licence is rarely the largest line in an MES project.

Where is production data stored with a European MES?

Few vendors state it. MPDV says data is processed exclusively in certified EU data centers, and GFOS says its ISO 27001-certified knownCloud runs in Germany. Factbird says it uses AWS and offers a private cloud for enterprises, without naming a region.

Evocon, FASTEC, FORCAM ENISCO, iTAC, Critical Manufacturing, PSI and AVEVA do not state a hosting location on the pages we checked. Put the region and the sub-processor list into the order form, since an on-premise installation may answer the question for sensitive plants altogether.

What changes when we leave GE Vernova Proficy for a European MES?

Proficy is a portfolio of HMI/SCADA, historian, analytics and Smart Factory MES, and the Proficy page now refers to Velotic. A European MES replaces the MES layer and connects to what remains through standards such as OPC UA, MQTT or SAP interfaces, so each Proficy-specific adapter becomes a small integration task.

Plan for exported history, a mapping of routings and quality plans, and a parallel run. Evocon and Factbird can take over the monitoring use quickly, whereas MPDV, FASTEC or Critical Manufacturing need a project that lasts months. The GE Proficy comparison page lists each vendor against it in detail.

Which European MES suits a multi-site or regulated group?

Critical Manufacturing describes a Global Data Orchestrator that defines master data centrally and distributes it to the sites, and it targets semiconductor, electronics and medical device production. MPDV and iTAC also serve large discrete plants, with subsidiaries outside Europe for global rollouts.

Ownership deserves a separate check. Critical Manufacturing belongs to ASMPT, iTAC to the Dürr AG group and AVEVA to Schneider Electric SE. The contracting entity is European or British in each case, but a buyer with a strict sovereignty rule should weigh the owner as well.

When should we not switch away from our current MES?

Do not switch because of a brand change alone. A stable installation with several years of support left, deep links to a historian and SCADA from the same supplier, and operators who know the screens is expensive to replace. The Proficy page announces a rebrand to Velotic without claiming a change of ownership, so ask for the contract position in writing first.

Switching makes sense at a renewal, when a plant outgrows a tool, or when the contracting entity no longer fits your rules. Pilot one European vendor on one line before committing the whole factory.

How we selected and ranked these 10 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on scope. Evocon and Factbird suit OEE monitoring with visible prices, FASTEC 4 PRO and PSIpenta/MES suit mid-sized discrete plants, and MPDV HYDRA X and iTAC.MOM.Suite suit larger ones. GFOS.Smart Manufacturing pairs MES with workforce management, FORCAM ENISCO offers three product lines, Critical Manufacturing targets high-tech plants, and AVEVA MES is the UK option.

MPDV states that cloud services process data only in certified EU data centers, and GFOS names Germany for its knownCloud. Factbird names AWS and a private cloud option without a region. For the other tools, hosting is not stated on the pages we read, so request it in the contract.

AVEVA Group Limited is registered in Cambridge and falls under UK law, which has an EU adequacy decision, so personal data can flow to it without further safeguards. That is not EU membership, and the decision can be revisited. AVEVA is also owned by Schneider Electric SE, a French company.

Evocon lists per-machine plans from €159 a month on a three-year agreement. Factbird lists dollar prices per line and per site. The other eight vendors, FASTEC, GFOS, FORCAM ENISCO, MPDV, iTAC, Critical Manufacturing, PSI and AVEVA, give pricing on request.

For the MES layer, yes in many discrete plants, with MPDV, FASTEC, iTAC, GFOS and Critical Manufacturing the closest in scope. None replaces the whole Proficy portfolio of HMI/SCADA, historian and analytics, so expect to keep or replace those separately.
