European Dental Practice Management Software

A dental practice system holds patient records, X-rays, treatment plans and billing for people who cannot easily change dentist or data. European dentists also bill under national schemes, which makes a locally built product more than a question of jurisdiction. The tools below come from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland, and each is contracted through a company inside Europe.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Denteo, a Zurich company founded in 2017, is the only tool in this category that prints its prices: CHF 99 or CHF 149 per full-time dentist per month, and a setup fee of CHF 3,900.
  • Dampsoft lets a German practice run its DS4 product in the vendor cloud or on its own server, and it sells the older DS-WIN as installed software.
  • Visiodent (Veasy) is cloud only, and the vendor states that data is held in France on servers approved by the health ministry.
  • Opus Dental is owned by Finland's Planmeca Group, and its Norwegian maker claims more than 3,000 clinics across Scandinavia.
  • CompuGroup Medical is the only group in this list that also supplies hospitals, pharmacies and laboratories, which sets it apart from the single-purpose dental vendors.

European dental practice management software is the system a dental office uses for patient records, charting, appointments and billing, supplied by a company established in Switzerland, the EU or the EEA, so that patient health data falls under European contracts and supervisory authorities and billing follows the local fee rules.

#1 Denteo

Zurich, Switzerland Founded 2017 Basic CHF 99 and Plus CHF 149 per full-time dentist per month; part-time CHF 49 and CHF 79; setup fee CHF 3,900 Demo on request

Best for: Swiss dental practices wanting browser software with a printed price list

  • Operating company. Denteo AG
  • Jurisdiction. Switzerland (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Switzerland (Exoscale data centres)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, Swiss installed practice software

Denteo is web-only practice software from Denteo AG in Zurich, built around the idea that nothing should run inside the practice. The vendor handles backups and storage in certified Exoscale data centres in Switzerland. Its site says more than 450 clinics use the product and that work on it began in 2017.

Switzerland is outside the EU but has an adequacy relationship with it, and the contracting company is Swiss. The tariff page shows two tiers: Basic for the core file and Plus for online booking, digital intake and surveys. Part-time dentists pay about half, assistants nothing, while texts are billed per message and the setup fee is CHF 3,900. Swiss tariffs and the OneDoc link make it unsuited to German or French clinics.

What Denteo does well

  • Fixed monthly price per dentist, shown online
  • Data held in Swiss data centres
  • No charge for assistant users
  • Onboarding call and data transfer from the old vendor
  • Online booking and digital intake from the Plus tier

Where Denteo falls short

  • Built for Switzerland
  • CHF 3,900 one-off setup fee
  • Browser only, no on-premise edition
  • Text messages charged on top

Standout feature. Denteo is the one tool here that tells you the monthly cost per dentist before you call anyone.

#2 Dampsoft

Damp (Schleswig-Holstein), Germany Founded 1986 Offer on request (no public price list) Demo on request

Best for: German practices choosing between a cloud and a local server

  • Operating company. DAMPSOFT GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Cloud or practice server, your choice
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, other German practice systems

Dampsoft grew out of a dentist's own frustration: Wolfram Greifenberg founded the company in 1986 because no software fit his practice. DAMPSOFT GmbH in Damp on the Baltic coast now claims over 12,500 customers and more than 450 staff. DS-WIN is the long-running installed product, while DS4 is reached through a browser and works on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.

For DS4 the practice decides whether data sits with the vendor or on its own server. Around the record the company sells AIVA for speech documentation, ATHENA for digital patient intake and e-connect as a hosted link to the German telematics network. DS4 triggers follow-up tasks and proposes to-dos per staff member. Pricing is by offer and demo only, and the German rules make it a poor fit elsewhere.

What Dampsoft does well

  • DS4 on the vendor cloud or on your own server
  • Runs in any browser on any operating system
  • Still a family company since 1986
  • Voice documentation and intake sold as separate products
  • Customer base in the thousands across Germany

Where Dampsoft falls short

  • Offer required, no price list
  • German market only
  • DS-WIN and DS4 mean a choice to make
  • Extras bought as separate products

Standout feature. Dampsoft is the only vendor here that offers one web product for either cloud hosting or your own server.

#3 Opus Dental

Hvalstad (Asker), Norway Not published Demo on request

Best for: Dental clinics in Norway and Sweden, public or private

  • Operating company. Opus Systemer AS
  • Jurisdiction. EEA, not EU (Norway)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages reviewed
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, Nordic installed record systems

Opus Dental is the record system from Opus Systemer AS, a Norwegian company in Hvalstad near Asker that claims more than 3,000 clinics and over 15,000 users across Scandinavia. It presents the product as suitable for clinics in both the private and public sector, with the patient file, image viewing, reminders and recalls, accounting and payment in one place.

The parent is Finland's Planmeca Group, a family of dental equipment makers that also includes KaVo Dental GmbH, so the contracting entity is in Norway and the group in the EU. Third-party payment, communication and accounting tools connect through integrations and an API. The vendor has served the trade for more than thirty years. Prices, hosting and any web edition are not stated on the pages we read.

What Opus Dental does well

  • Three decades in the dental trade
  • X-ray and image viewing opened from the record
  • Serves both public and private clinics
  • Open to outside tools via integrations and API
  • Parent is a Finnish group

Where Opus Dental falls short

  • No price information
  • Server location not stated
  • Written for Nordic clinics
  • Pages mainly in Norwegian and Swedish

Standout feature. Opus Dental is the one tool here owned by a dental equipment group, which ties its imaging closely to the record.

#4 Visiodent (Veasy)

Clichy, France Not published Demo on request

Best for: French dental offices and health centres leaving local servers

  • Operating company. Visiodent S.A.
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France)
  • Where the data sits. France, on servers approved by the health ministry (vendor statement)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, French installed dental software

Visiodent (Veasy) is the cloud product of Visiodent S.A. in Clichy, a company that claims more than 39 years in dental software. Veasy runs in the browser on a Mac, PC, tablet or phone, with updates and backups handled by the vendor. It comes in one variant for private dental offices and one for health centres.

The vendor states that the data is held in France on servers approved by the health ministry. Dentists quoted on the site point to the preloaded procedure and insurer lists, which support third-party payment, and to automatic bank reconciliation. Patients can book online, complete a medical questionnaire from home, answer a satisfaction survey and sign with a certified e-signature. No prices are published, and there is no local fallback when the connection is down.

What Visiodent (Veasy) does well

  • Records held in France, per the vendor
  • Nothing to install, back up or maintain
  • Patients can book and sign online
  • Edition for health centres as well as offices
  • French insurers and procedures already loaded

Where Visiodent (Veasy) falls short

  • Offline use is not possible
  • Prices not shown
  • France only
  • One supplier covers everything

Standout feature. Visiodent is the only tool here whose whole offer is a cloud hosted on French health-approved servers.

#5 charly

Holzgerlingen, Germany Subscription, price on request Demo on request

Best for: German practices preferring a monthly plan with web access

  • Operating company. solutio GmbH & Co. KG
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages reviewed
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, installed German practice systems

charly is the practice system of solutio GmbH & Co. KG in Holzgerlingen, which presents it as the centre of a connected practice. The vendor lists variants for single practices, group practices and MVZ or clinic structures, and a page for founders. The charly Abo plan bundles modules, interfaces and e-health functions, and solutio argues that this protects liquidity at start-up or expansion.

Staff can work away from the fixed workstation with charly-Web, an assistant and task management. Separate modules cover analytics, anamnesis, documents and a factoring link, and the company runs seminars, e-learning and coaching. The company sits in the Stuttgart commercial register as a limited partnership. The pages we read show no euro figures and do not say where web data is stored.

What charly does well

  • No large upfront licence fee
  • Staff can work through charly-Web
  • Versions for groups, clinics and MVZ
  • Seminars, e-learning and coaching available
  • AI assistant included in the plan

Where charly falls short

  • Euro prices absent
  • Data location for the web version unclear
  • Billing rules are German only
  • Modules such as analytics cost extra

Standout feature. charly is the one German system here that sells itself as a subscription with modules and e-health functions included.

#6 Exquise

Netherlands, Netherlands Demo on request Demo on request

Best for: Dutch dentists and oral hygienists who order work from labs

  • Operating company. Vertimart (part of MSPS Groep B.V.)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Netherlands)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages reviewed
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, Dutch installed software

Exquise is the Dutch practice software of Vertimart, which says that more than 3,600 practices use it every day and that it has supported oral care for over 35 years. Exquise Next Generation is described as a cloud platform covering the patient file, claims, planning and patient messaging, which the vendor says scales with the practice.

The front-desk extras include SMS, an internet agenda where patients choose their slot, WebOrder for lab orders, a phone monitor that opens the caller's file and a waiting-room kiosk. Vertimart has been part of MSPS Groep B.V. since March 2023, which belongs to HAL Investments. Training and personal guidance are sold with it. No price, hosting location or contracting entity name appears in the text we reviewed.

What Exquise does well

  • Thousands of Dutch practices on the system
  • Lab orders sent digitally through WebOrder
  • Patients check in themselves
  • Training sold with the product
  • Decades in oral care

Where Exquise falls short

  • Price not disclosed
  • Server location not described
  • Only for the Dutch market
  • Owner is a holding structure

Standout feature. Exquise is the one tool here with a phone monitor that opens the caller's patient file at the front desk.

#7 EVIDENT

Bad Kreuznach, Germany Not published Demo on request

Best for: Orthodontists, oral surgeons, clinics and MVZ in Germany

  • Operating company. EVIDENT GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages reviewed
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, other German practice systems

EVIDENT is the practice software of EVIDENT GmbH in Bad Kreuznach, a company that says it has been independent in its market for more than 50 years. Its shareholders are mathematicians, computer scientists and an orthodontist who work in the firm. The audience includes dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, universities, clinics and MVZ.

A base module is extended by specialty, optional, telematics and AI-supported modules, so an orthodontist and a general dentist license different sets. Every task starts from the patient card, which holds entries, billing, sick notes, appointments, letters and images. A video portal, a webinar flat rate and a training centre come with it, and the vendor counts its support hotline as part of the service. Prices, hosting and any browser edition are not stated.

What EVIDENT does well

  • Modules tailored to each dental specialty
  • Independent company for more than five decades
  • Videos, webinars and a training centre
  • Modules for German telematics
  • Fits a single chair up to a medical care centre

Where EVIDENT falls short

  • Price not disclosed
  • No mention of cloud hosting
  • Aimed at German billing
  • Optional modules raise the total

Standout feature. EVIDENT is the one vendor here with shareholders who work in the company, including an orthodontist.

#8 ivoris

Falkenstein (Saxony), Germany Not published Demo on request

Best for: German dentists, orthodontists and clinics buying only the modules they use

  • Operating company. Computer konkret AG
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages reviewed
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix, other German practice software

ivoris is made by Computer konkret AG, a stock company in Falkenstein, Saxony, registered at Chemnitz and led by Elisabeth Brand and Michael Brand. The vendor splits the system into ivoris dent, ivoris ortho and ivoris clinic, so each type of practice gets its own variant. ivoris dent covers appointments, the digital record and billing from conservative treatment to periodontics.

The module ivoris analyze evaluates X-ray, photo and 3D images straight from the patient file in several display modes. Preconfigured chains of services are meant to save time and reduce billing mistakes, and an in-house lab plus links to billing companies are part of the offer. The vendor describes the system as GDPR-conform. One customer quote on the site pairs ivoris analyze with other software, and support runs through tickets.

What ivoris does well

  • A variant for dentists, orthodontists and clinics
  • Dedicated module for X-ray, photo and 3D images
  • Ready-made service chains for billing
  • Own lab handling in the system
  • Vendor calls it GDPR-conform

Where ivoris falls short

  • No price list
  • Hosting options unexplained
  • For German billing only
  • Support handled by tickets

Standout feature. ivoris is the only tool here with its own image analysis module for X-ray, photo and 3D images.

#9 CompuGroup Medical

Koblenz, Germany Licence plus service contract Demo on request

Best for: Practices, hospitals and pharmacies on connected national systems

  • Operating company. CompuGroup Medical
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Epic, Oracle Health, athenahealth

CompuGroup Medical is a healthcare IT group headquartered in Koblenz, Germany, and listed in Frankfurt. Its software runs in doctors' practices, hospitals, pharmacies, laboratories and dental surgeries in dozens of countries. For dentists the cgm.com page lists Z1.PRO, CGM Z1 and HIGHDENT PLUS; this review draws on the group page, not on a separate study of each dental product.

The group's argument is national connectedness: it builds for the German Telematikinfrastruktur, which carries the electronic patient record, e-prescription, connectors and card readers. It also lists pharmacy and laboratory software, e-prescription and telemedicine. Pricing is a licence plus a service contract sold through a partner and support network, so cost varies by module, country and practice size, and support depends on the local partner.

What CompuGroup Medical does well

  • Covers practices, hospitals, pharmacies and labs
  • Built into the German telematics infrastructure
  • Pharmacy and laboratory products sit beside the clinical ones
  • Listed company with group scale
  • Active in dozens of national markets
  • Telemedicine and e-prescription offered

Where CompuGroup Medical falls short

  • Opaque pricing via partners
  • Wide range, so depth varies by product
  • User interfaces vary between product lines
  • Quality of support depends on the partner

Standout feature. CompuGroup Medical is the one entry here that supplies dental practices, hospitals and pharmacies from a single listed group.

#10 Julie

Marne-la-Vallee, France Founded 1983 Not published Demo on request

Best for: French dental offices that prefer an established vendor

  • Operating company. Julie Solutions
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated for the product (website hosted by OVH in France)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Dentrix

Julie is dental software from Julie Solutions, which describes itself as a publisher of digital solutions that make dental office tasks easier. Its about text dates the company to 1983, and the legal notice gives the company number RCS 838 336 246 with an address in Marne-la-Vallee. The vendor's own claim about its market standing is a vendor statement and is not repeated here.

Quotes on the site mention quick answers from support and updates that go without problems, and the company tours French regions with conference sessions for dentists. We could verify little else: no price, hosting statement or feature table was reachable, although the website itself is hosted by OVH in France. Visiodent gives more detail about its cloud and hosting, so book a demo with Julie rather than rely on the site.

What Julie does well

  • Operating since 1983
  • Company based in France
  • Conference tours across French regions
  • Customers mention trouble-free updates
  • French support staff

Where Julie falls short

  • Few public facts
  • No price shown
  • Hosting for the product is unknown
  • France only

Standout feature. Julie dates itself to 1983 and prints its company number, but offers little else to judge it by, so a demo is the only real test.

How do I pick dental software when every European tool follows a different national billing system?

Start with the country of the practice, because billing is where these products cannot be swapped. Denteo is written for Swiss tariffs and the OneDoc booking link, Dampsoft, charly, EVIDENT and ivoris for German billing, Visiodent and Julie for French health insurance, Exquise for Dutch declarations and Opus Dental for Norway and Sweden. A tool from the wrong country will chart teeth fine and invoice them wrongly.

Inside one country the second filter is delivery. Denteo, Visiodent and Exquise Next Generation are described as cloud or browser products, Dampsoft offers both models, and EVIDENT and ivoris do not mention a browser edition on the pages we read. Shortlist two or three vendors and ask each to show a real chart, a periodontal status and a billing run on your own fee schedule.

What does dental practice software cost in Europe?

Only Denteo states a price. Basic costs CHF 99 and Plus CHF 149 per full-time dentist per month, part-time dentists pay CHF 49 and CHF 79, assistants use the system free, and text messages and the CHF 3,900 setup fee come on top. Plus adds online booking, digital intake, online estimates and satisfaction surveys.

Everyone else asks you to request an offer or a demo: Dampsoft, Opus Dental, Visiodent, charly, Exquise, EVIDENT, ivoris and Julie publish no figures. charly says its Abo plan bundles modules, interfaces and e-health functions with no large one-off cost. CompuGroup Medical sells licences plus service contracts through partners. Treat the lack of a price as a prompt to ask for the whole bill, including modules, training and interfaces.

Is health data safe with a Swiss or Norwegian vendor, which is not in the EU?

Switzerland and Norway sit outside the EU, so the legal basis differs. Denteo states that its data stays in Exoscale data centres in Switzerland, and the pages describe Switzerland as having an adequacy relationship with the EU. Opus Systemer AS is a Norwegian company, Norway belongs to the EEA, and the group parent, Planmeca, is Finnish.

For a practice in an EU country, ask the vendor how the processing agreement is built and where backups sit. Opus Dental states nothing about hosting on the pages we read, so that question is open. Dampsoft, Visiodent, charly, Exquise, EVIDENT, ivoris and Julie are German, French or Dutch companies, which puts the contract inside the EU, even though most do not say where their data servers are.

How do I move from Dentrix or another American system?

Ask the new vendor what it has imported from before. Denteo describes a first call with an onboarding manager, a transfer arranged with your old provider and the connection of X-ray devices. The other vendors say less in public, so request a sample import and check ten old charts, the periodontal status, images and the open balances before you commit.

Expect billing set-up to take longer than the chart. A Dentrix office works with US insurance rules, whereas the European products ship national procedure lists: Visiodent mentions insurers already loaded, Exquise handles Dutch declarations and ivoris offers preconfigured chains of services. Keep read access to the old system until the first month is closed.

When should a practice not switch to a European system?

If the practice is in the United States or Canada, none of these tools applies, because they follow European billing. The same holds for a European practice that depends on a Dentrix-only integration, such as a specific imaging or claims partner, and has no plan to replace it. In that case ask Henry Schein One how the data is processed before deciding anything.

Also wait if the practice is mid-way through an equipment or telematics change. Changing the record system while swapping X-ray sensors or connectors multiplies the failure points. A stable German practice running EVIDENT or ivoris gains little from a switch to charly only for the web access.

What about telematics, labs and imaging?

These are the integrations that decide a switch. Dampsoft sells e-connect, a hosted connector to the German telematics network, and EVIDENT lists telematics modules. Exquise orders lab work through WebOrder, ivoris includes an in-house lab and links to billing companies, and Opus Dental offers an API for outside developers.

For imaging, ivoris analyze reads X-ray, photo and 3D images inside the patient file, and Opus Dental lets users view images without leaving the record. Denteo says it connects X-ray devices during onboarding. Ask each vendor for a list of supported sensors and lab systems in writing.

How we selected and ranked these 10 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the country and on whether you want a cloud or a local server. Denteo is the pick for Swiss practices that want published prices, and Dampsoft for German practices that want a choice between cloud and server. Visiodent suits French offices going to the cloud, Exquise Dutch practices that order from labs, and Opus Dental Nordic clinics. EVIDENT and ivoris fit German specialists.

Only Denteo does. Its Basic tier is CHF 99 and its Plus tier CHF 149 per full-time dentist per month, with a setup fee of CHF 3,900. The other nine tools in this list ask you for an offer, a demo or, for CompuGroup Medical, a licence plus service contract.

Yes, in Germany. Dampsoft states that DS4 can be placed in its cloud or on a practice server and that DS-WIN is installed on premises. EVIDENT and ivoris do not describe a cloud edition on the pages we read, so they are the other choices for a local setup.

Visiodent with Veasy and Julie. Visiodent sells a cloud product for private offices and for health centres, with data in France according to the vendor. Julie dates itself to 1983, but its pages show no pricing, hosting or feature table, so ask it for a demo.

Not well. These products are built for national billing and insurer lists, so each is tied to its home market. CompuGroup Medical is present in dozens of national markets as a group, so ask its local team in your country which dental system it sells.
