European Alternatives to McAfee
Looking for a European alternative to McAfee? McAfee sells security subscriptions under the name McAfee, LLC (the entity in the footer of home.mcafee.com, copyright 2003 to 2026) and runs a renewal portal for existing customers, so most buyers meet it as a yearly licence that has to be renewed or cancelled.
The European tools below come from Romania, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, Poland, Finland, France and the United Kingdom, and cover home and small-office protection as well as managed business suites and sovereignty-grade platforms.
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Key takeaways
- McAfee's own site footer names McAfee, LLC as the copyright holder for 2003 to 2026, and none of its readable pages we reached places that company in Europe.
- Bitdefender, a Romanian company, sells home plans for five devices, with a VPN of unlimited traffic in its Premium Security tier according to its consumer page.
- ESET (Slovakia) has a dedicated home section with ESET HOME Security, NOD32 Antivirus and a free 30-day trial without a credit card.
- G DATA CyberDefense AG is registered in Bochum (Handelsregister HRB 6886) and publishes a written no-backdoor guarantee.
- SentryBay does not replace an antivirus: it blocks keylogging and screen capture on devices a company cannot manage.
Why people leave McAfee
McAfee is a name most people know from a pre-installed trial on a new laptop.
The company behind the consumer product is, according to the footer of its own site, McAfee, LLC, and its customer pages are organised around a yearly licence: there is a link for renewing a subscription, one for downloading a purchase and one for checking subscription status. That is the relationship you are leaving when you look elsewhere, a paid licence tied to an account in a non-European company.
People who search for a replacement usually fall into three groups. Some have a licence that is about to renew and want to compare before it does. Some want the machine to feel faster after a trial pre-installed by the manufacturer. A smaller group, mostly in public bodies and regulated firms, has a rule that security software must come from a vendor established in Europe, because the agent sees every file on the computer.
We could not read McAfee's terms or privacy notice for this page: its main site refused our automated request on 19 October 2026. So this page does not describe McAfee's contract terms, prices or data locations. It compares what the European tools publish about themselves with what you will need to ask McAfee yourself before you decide, and it says where McAfee may still be the better fit.
- The contracting party is a non-European LLC The footer on home.mcafee.com names McAfee, LLC as the copyright holder, 2003 to 2026. Whatever the product is called in the shop, that is the company you contract with. EP lists tools only when the contracting entity, the headquarters and the ultimate owner are all in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland, and we found nothing on McAfee's readable pages that places it there. For a household that is a minor point. For an organisation with a procurement checklist, it is the whole answer.
- Everything is organised around renewing a subscription McAfee's own support landing page puts "Renew subscription", "Download a recent purchase" and "Check subscription status" under the heading for existing customers. A licence model of that kind rewards checking the renewal date a month ahead. Several of the European vendors below sell the same way, but some sell per seat to businesses at published rates, and a few do not run a consumer shop at all, which removes the renewal prompt from your inbox entirely.
- You cannot read its terms without a browser session Our request for McAfee's legal pages was refused with an access-denied error on 19 October 2026, and so was every other page we tried on www.mcafee.com. A person with a normal browser will probably get through. Still, a security vendor whose terms are awkward to fetch automatically is awkward to audit, and auditing is what a compliance team does. G DATA and the other European vendors below publish an imprint with a register number or a named board.
- A consumer suite is the wrong shape for managed fleets If the McAfee you run sits on twenty office laptops, you are probably missing a management console, role-based access and a vendor who will talk to an IT partner. ESET, IKARUS, DriveLock and WithSecure were built for that case. Buying a consumer bundle per device, then logging into each one when something breaks, is a cost that does not show up on the invoice.
What you have to replace, not just match
A consumer security suite is rarely just an antivirus scanner, and a good migration list starts with what is installed beside it.
Typical items are a browser extension that rates websites, a firewall, a password manager and a VPN client, and each of these has its own login and its own renewal date.
Write down which of those you actually use before comparing vendors, because the European tools split the work differently. Bitdefender's home plans, for instance, bundle a password manager and, in the higher tier, a VPN with unlimited traffic. G DATA and ESET have separate private-user areas on their sites. The business-only vendors, WithSecure and Arcabit, are not designed to be bought in that form.
Second, replace the part that is hard to see: the account. A McAfee login holds your licence keys, the list of protected devices and the card on file.
You will want to cancel auto-renewal at McAfee, not just uninstall the software, otherwise the charge continues and you are protected by two products on one machine for a while. Check the cancellation route in McAfee's own account pages while the licence is still active, and keep the confirmation. Nothing here can be automated from the European side.
Third, for firms rather than households, decide who will watch the alerts. A consumer suite pops up a window on each machine. A business console centralises those events. If nobody in your organisation reads them, then the question is not ESET versus Bitdefender but whether you want a managed detection service, which Bitdefender and WithSecure both offer, or a tool that mostly prevents things and stays quiet, such as SentryBay.

How each alternative compares to McAfee
Best for: Households and small firms wanting a multi-device suite with VPN and a managed option later
Bitdefender is the one European tool on this page whose consumer page looks most like what a McAfee customer already knows: Total Security covers one member and five devices on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, and Premium Security adds scam protection, email protection and a VPN with unlimited traffic, according to the page we read on 19 October 2026. Bitdefender is S.C. Bitdefender S.R.L. in Bucharest, with EU data processing.
The step up from home to work is what separates it from many alternatives here. The same company runs managed detection and response and a large partner channel, so a freelancer who grows into a ten-person firm does not need to change vendor. The EP review notes that the range is wide and some capabilities hide behind tiers that the pricing page does not make obvious.
What Bitdefender does better than McAfee
- Jurisdiction: the contracting company is Romanian, not an LLC outside Europe
- Growth path from a home licence to managed detection for a company
- Published per-seat business pricing
- A 30-day money-back promise on the consumer page
Where Bitdefender is a step down from McAfee
- The product range is wide, so choosing the right plan takes some reading
- Home pricing quoted for the first year only, with renewal at a different rate
Standout against McAfee. It is the only tool here that covers a family laptop and, later, a managed response service under one name.
Best for: Anyone who wants a quiet scanner, a trial first, and the choice of home or office plans
ESET, spol. s r.o. in Bratislava has separate home and small-office lines, and its home area lists ESET HOME Security, NOD32 Antivirus, a mobile product and a VPN, along with a free 30-day trial that needs no credit card. Against McAfee, the argument is less about features than temperament: the EP review stresses a light agent and a low false-positive rate, which matters when the complaint about your current product is that it keeps interrupting.
ESET also sells to companies at published business prices and has an EDR tier, so a household and an employer can end up on the same engine. The honest limit is that it is not the deepest hunting platform in the category, and EDR costs extra over the base protection.
What ESET does better than McAfee
- Fewer false alarms, according to the EP review of its test results
- A free 30-day trial without card details
- Slovak company with EU processing rather than a non-European LLC
- Business pricing published instead of quoted
Where ESET is a step down from McAfee
- VPN and privacy tools are sold as separate products, not one bundle
- Large security teams will find sharper threat-hunting elsewhere
Standout against McAfee. A trial that asks for no card removes the renewal trap at the very start.
Best for: German and DACH buyers who must show that antivirus is developed and run in Germany
G DATA CyberDefense AG gives its imprint on the website: G DATA Campus, Königsallee 178 a, 44799 Bochum, entered in the Bochum commercial register as HRB 6886, with named board members. That level of detail is what a procurement officer asks of any vendor and what we could not retrieve for McAfee. The company has a private-user section and a business section, and promises in writing that its software contains no backdoor.
Compared with a mass-market suite, G DATA is the more conservative choice. The EP review calls the interface functional rather than modern and places detection solid but below ESET and Bitdefender in recent tests. If your decision is made on a feature checklist it will look middling, but if it is made on provenance it is among the strongest answers on this page.
What G DATA does better than McAfee
- Provenance: development and data processing in Germany, a register number and named directors
- A written no-backdoor guarantee rather than a general privacy statement
- Both a private and a business range from the same company
Where G DATA is a step down from McAfee
- Detection results in the EP review sit below ESET and Bitdefender
- Plain interface and a smaller partner network outside German-speaking markets
Standout against McAfee. A commercial-register number and named board turn jurisdiction from a claim into something you can check.
IKARUS Security Software
An Austrian business engine for buyers who want a human contact rather than a webshop
Best for: Austrian and DACH offices wanting cloud-managed protection and mail security from one vendor
IKARUS Security Software GmbH in Vienna is a poor match if what you liked about McAfee was clicking Buy in a shop. Pricing is quoted through sales and a trial has to be requested by phone or email. What you get in return is a cloud portal that handles devices, licences and configuration profiles, plus mail security and mobile device management from the same company.
The independent checks it points to are OPSWAT Platinum, a Virus Bulletin VB100 award and the Cyber Trust Austria label. It does not publish AV-Comparatives or AV-TEST results as consistently as ESET or Bitdefender, so verify the detection claim yourself before you roll it out to a whole office.
What IKARUS Security Software does better than McAfee
- Management portal for devices and licences instead of per-device logins
- Mail security and mobile device management under one vendor
- Austrian establishment with an external trust label
Where IKARUS Security Software is a step down from McAfee
- No published price and no self-serve trial
- Less consistently published independent test results
- Not aimed at a household buying one licence
Standout against McAfee. Detection work dating back to 1986, which makes it the second-oldest vendor in this category.
Best for: Polish small offices that want a local vendor and a central console
Arcabit Sp. z o.o. in Warsaw, active since 2004, is the only Polish vendor in this category. Its own range includes a lighter Small Office Security tier, a larger network edition and a RoundKick EDR module. The EP tool page lists McAfee among the products it replaces, but the offer reads as business software, so treat it as an alternative for a small firm rather than for a family.
The trade-off is visibility. No prices are published and a trial goes through a contact form. Independent test coverage is thinner than for ESET or Bitdefender, and the company's presence outside Poland is small. It carries the Virus Bulletin VB100 award.
What Arcabit does better than McAfee
- A domestic Polish vendor with Polish-language support
- A Small Office tier next to the corporate edition
- VB100 certification as an independent signal
Where Arcabit is a step down from McAfee
- Pricing and trials only through a contact form
- Thin international presence and fewer public test results
Standout against McAfee. It is the only Polish vendor in this category, which matters if your buyer asks for a local one.
Best for: Mid-sized firms buying endpoint protection through a managed service provider
WithSecure Corporation in Helsinki is the business half of what used to be F-Secure, split off in 2022. It sells almost entirely through partners and managed service providers, with endpoint protection, EDR and a co-monitored detection service. Do not expect a consumer shop that replaces a McAfee home subscription.
What you gain is a service model where WithSecure analysts watch alongside your team. What you lose is control over your own experience: it depends on the partner, prices are quoted, and a small firm buying direct is not the target customer.
What WithSecure does better than McAfee
- Co-monitored detection with the vendor's analysts
- A mature partner network across Europe
Where WithSecure is a step down from McAfee
- No direct consumer purchase route
- Quality varies with the partner you buy through
Standout against McAfee. The analysts watch with you rather than instead of you.
Best for: Companies whose staff or contractors work from personal laptops and remote desktop sessions
SentryBay Limited in London does a different job from McAfee. Its Armored Client blocks keylogging, screen capture and DLL injection on endpoints where a full agent cannot be installed, such as a contractor's laptop, a BYOD phone or a virtual desktop session. It runs beside an antivirus, not in place of one.
The UK sits outside the EEA and relies on the adequacy decision, which the EP page flags. Pricing is on request and a demo has to be requested. Pick it as a complement if your McAfee seats were mostly scattered personal devices.
What SentryBay does better than McAfee
- Protection on unmanaged devices where nothing else can be installed
- Targeted at chosen corporate applications, so it stays light
Where SentryBay is a step down from McAfee
- It is not anti-malware and replaces nothing on its own
Standout against McAfee. It is the only tool here built for sessions nobody can put a full agent on.
Best for: French and EU public bodies with a sovereignty requirement
Stormshield is a wholly owned subsidiary of Airbus Defence and Space Cyber Programmes. Its endpoint agent has an ANSSI CSPN qualification and Spain's CCN-LINCE approval, which are outside checks that a consumer suite does not offer. There is no home plan: pricing is quoted and the EP entry lists no trial.
Detection is behavioural rather than signature-based, device control is included and processing is mostly inside the EEA. Pick it only when a rule demands that proof; the partner network outside France is thin, and ESET or Bitdefender are easier to buy and run.
What Stormshield does better than McAfee
- Qualified by ANSSI and approved by CCN-LINCE
- Device control included in the agent
- Processing mostly within the EEA
Where Stormshield is a step down from McAfee
- No consumer product or trial
- Quoted pricing
- Thin partner network outside France
Standout against McAfee. A French agency's qualification backs the claim of sovereignty.
Best for: European organisations with real security maturity and sovereignty requirements
TEHTRI-Security SAS in Paris covers endpoints, servers, mobile devices and containers under one detection and response platform, with components qualified by ANSSI and a stated position of keeping data in France. It answers a different question from a home suite: where does the telemetry live and who can show it.
It assumes staff who can run a response platform. Pricing is enterprise and by request, a demo replaces a trial, and outside France the brand and partner network are much thinner than ESET or Bitdefender. It is not what a household replacing McAfee should buy.
What TEHTRIS does better than McAfee
- Covers endpoints, servers, mobile and containers
- ANSSI-qualified components
- French processing
Where TEHTRIS is a step down from McAfee
- Needs a team that can operate it
- Enterprise pricing on request
- Thin partner network outside France
Standout against McAfee. Sovereignty is checked by an external qualification, not a marketing line.
DriveLock
A German answer for offices running antivirus, USB control and encryption as three products
Best for: German firms that want device control and antivirus in a single console
DriveLock SE in Munich puts device control, application whitelisting, vulnerability management and disk encryption management beside its own protection engine and Microsoft Defender orchestration. If an office is paying for a McAfee seat per laptop plus separate tools for USB sticks and encryption, this is the consolidation route.
Its credentials are ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and the TeleTrusT made in Germany and made in EU seals, with a European Azure cloud and a free trial. Pricing is quoted per endpoint and policies need setup, so it is more platform than a single home computer needs.
What DriveLock does better than McAfee
- Device control, whitelisting and encryption beside antivirus
- ISO 27001 and TeleTrusT seals
- Free trial offered
Where DriveLock is a step down from McAfee
- Quoted pricing
- Real configuration effort
- Not meant for a single home PC
Standout against McAfee. Three separate vendor relationships collapse into one German one.
What actually breaks when you switch
Plan the changeover around the licence date. Install the new product first, test the scan, then remove McAfee and cancel auto-renewal in its account area. Uninstalling alone does not end a subscription. Look at how many devices your current licence covers: Bitdefender's home plans list five devices per member, and the other vendors count seats differently, so a household with seven devices may need two licences. Expect a day of mild disruption for scans and for re-entering saved settings.
Business migrations take longer than they look. You need the new console in place before removing agents, exclusions rewritten for line-of-business software, and an owner for the alert inbox. If the vendor sells only through partners (WithSecure) or sales (IKARUS, Arcabit, Stormshield, TEHTRIS, DriveLock), begin the quote process weeks ahead. Contract terms of notice for the old licence are in McAfee's own agreement; we could not read it, so ask for it.
Will I lose protection in the days between McAfee and a new product?
Install the new product first and let it run its initial scan, then remove McAfee. Two real-time scanners on one machine slow it down and sometimes flag each other, so do not run both for longer than the changeover. Most vendors, including ESET, offer a trial period that lets you test before you pay: ESET advertises a free 30-day trial without a credit card on its home pages.
Turn off auto-renewal in your McAfee account before the licence ends, not afterwards. If a card is still on file, a renewal can be taken even though the software is gone. Take a screenshot of the cancelled state. If McAfee came pre-installed and you never entered a card, there is usually nothing to cancel, but check.
Is a European vendor automatically safer than McAfee?
No. Where a company is established tells you which law governs the contract and who can compel it to hand over data. It tells you nothing about how well the engine detects a new strain of ransomware. For detection, look at the independent test labs, and read the vendor's own claims as claims.
What the European tools add is a short answer to the jurisdiction question, and for some of them a set of published commitments such as G DATA's no-backdoor guarantee or the Cyber Trust Austria label that IKARUS carries. If you do not have a reason to care about jurisdiction, choose on detection, price and the way the console works.
Which one to pick
For most households and freelancers, Bitdefender or ESET is the practical answer: both have consumer shops, multi-device plans and a way to try before paying. Choose Bitdefender if you want a VPN and scam protection in the same bundle and may later want managed response. Choose ESET if the main complaint was a heavy product or too many pop-ups, and test it on the 30-day trial.
For offices, let the buying process decide. G DATA when provenance and a German register entry matter, IKARUS in Austria, Arcabit in Poland, DriveLock when you want device control and antivirus in the same console, Stormshield or TEHTRIS only where a sovereignty rule and a security team exist, WithSecure if an IT partner already runs your estate, and SentryBay on top when staff use devices you cannot manage.
If you only need McAfee for one personal machine and it works for you, switching to avoid a non-European vendor is a choice, not a necessity.
Frequently Asked Questions
For a home user or a small office, start with Bitdefender (Romania) or ESET (Slovakia), both of which run consumer shops with multi-device plans and trial offers. G DATA (Germany) suits buyers whose main concern is where the software is written and processed. For managed business fleets, IKARUS, DriveLock and WithSecure are built around consoles rather than shops.
We found no evidence that it is. The footer of home.mcafee.com names McAfee, LLC, and our automated requests to the main McAfee site were refused on 19 October 2026, so we could not read its imprint or terms. EP therefore treats McAfee as a non-European incumbent. If your organisation needs a definitive statement, ask McAfee for the contracting entity and its ultimate owner in writing.
Some of the tools on this page offer a free trial rather than a free licence: ESET lists a free 30-day trial and G DATA offers a free trial from its site, while Bitdefender's consumer page advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee. None of them is perpetual freeware as far as the pages we read show. If you only need the basics on one personal computer, compare the trial lengths and the price after the first year before committing.
That varies by vendor. Bitdefender's consumer page lists a password manager in Total Security and a VPN with unlimited traffic in Premium Security, and ESET's home area lists a separate ESET VPN. The business vendors on this page, such as WithSecure and Arcabit, focus on endpoint protection and management and do not sell consumer bundles. Check the plan comparison on the vendor's current page before you buy.
SentryBay is built for exactly that situation: it blocks keylogging, screen capture and DLL injection on unmanaged and VDI endpoints, though it is not an antivirus and works beside one. For laptops the company does manage, DriveLock or ESET give you a central console. Which is right depends on whether you can install an agent on the device at all.
