European Alternatives to CCleaner

Looking for a European alternative to CCleaner? CCleaner is published by Gen Digital Inc., which describes dual headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic and Tempe, Arizona, and its own site lists CCleaner as part of Gen since November 2023, with Free, Professional and Professional Plus editions.

The European tools below come from Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, France and the United Kingdom, and split the CCleaner job into suites, privacy tools, uninstallers, disk analyzers and Mac cleaners.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • CCleaner is published by Gen Digital Inc., which says its headquarters are in Prague and Tempe, Arizona, and which names itself as owner of the CCleaner, Recuva and Speccy trademarks.
  • According to its own About page, CCleaner launched in 2004 and became part of Gen in November 2023.
  • The Professional edition bundles Performance Optimizer, Driver Updater, Health Check, Software Updater and Privacy Protection, whereas European tools such as Revo Uninstaller and TreeSize each cover a single job.
  • Ashampoo WinOptimizer, from Rastede in Germany, has a free edition, a 30-day trial and a one-time licence, and covers cleanup, startup and registry in one program.
  • O&O ShutUp10++ from Berlin is freeware and handles the Windows telemetry settings that browser cleaning cannot reach.

Why people leave CCleaner

CCleaner is the cleaner most people have installed at some point. According to its own About page it launched in 2004, and the same page lists Recuva (2007), Defraggler (2007) and Speccy (2010) as siblings, Mac and Android editions, a browser and a business edition called CCleaner Cloud.

The About page claims over 2.5 billion downloads and more than five million desktop installs a week. Those are vendor figures, but they explain why "CCleaner alternative" is a query at all: this product defines what a cleaner is supposed to be.

Ownership has moved around the product. The About timeline ends with "Nov 2023: CCleaner became part of Gen", and the footer now reads "Copyright 2005-2026 Gen Digital Inc", with CCleaner, Recuva and Speccy named as registered trademarks of that company.

Gen describes dual headquarters in Prague and in Tempe, Arizona. A Czech office is real, but the contracting parent printed on the page is a US corporation, and its footer carries a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link.

People who leave rarely cite corporate structure. They cite what the product has become: a free tier that pushes the paid editions, a bundle of drivers, updaters and a health check wrapped around what used to be a small cleaner, and a company that also sells a browser and a tracker blocker. A European replacement is less about escaping CCleaner than about choosing tools that each do one clearly described job.

  • The contracting parent is a US corporation CCleaner's legal footer names Gen Digital Inc. as owner and publisher, and the privacy and consent policies sit under that company. Gen's own site says its headquarters are split between Prague and Tempe, so the picture is not purely American. What does not change is that a cleaner with access to your browser profiles, installed software list and registry is run by a US-incorporated parent, which brings US legal process into the picture whatever the servers' location.
  • A small cleaner became a bundle The Professional page lists Performance Optimizer, Driver Updater, Health Check, Software Updater, Privacy Protection and an included copy of Recuva, with Professional Plus adding more. Each is a separate job that needs administrator rights. If you only wanted browser and temp-file cleaning, buying and running the whole set means more resident components and more settings than the task requires.
  • The price is not shown in plain text On 20 October 2026 the Professional page showed the feature comparison but no price that rendered without scripts, and the purchase flow is where figures appear. EP therefore quotes none. For a buyer comparing yearly subscriptions with one-time licences, that matters: Ashampoo, Revo, Duplicate Cleaner and DriverMax all sell perpetual or lifetime options that the CCleaner page does not mention.
  • Cleaning your own browser is not the same as your privacy CCleaner removes cookies, history and cache from major browsers. That is useful, but Windows itself keeps sending diagnostic and advertising data through settings that a browser wipe does not touch. The European answer is a separate tool for that layer, O&O ShutUp10++, which shows each Windows setting as a switch instead of folding it into a cleaning scan.

What you have to replace, not just match

Start by listing which CCleaner features you actually use. The product page names browser cleaning, a registry cleaner (which the vendor calls patented), startup program control and, in the paid editions, the Driver Updater, Software Updater and Health Check. Most users touch three or four of these. Each of the three has a European tool that does it with more detail.

Then separate Windows from the rest. CCleaner also exists for Mac, Android and iOS, and as a cloud-managed business product. The European tools here are overwhelmingly Windows or Mac desktop programs. There is no European Android or iOS cleaner on this page, and no tool that matches the managed CCleaner Cloud console for a fleet of office PCs. If those are your use, this page covers the desktop half and you will need another answer for the rest.

Finally, replace the habit rather than the icon. A weekly click on "Run Cleaner" is replaceable by one analysis of what fills the disk, one uninstall that removes leftovers, and one pass through the privacy settings. Done once, those three steps cover most of what the recurring scan was giving you, and none of them needs a subscription.

How each alternative compares to CCleaner

#1

Ashampoo WinOptimizer

the single program that replaces the whole CCleaner Windows window

Rastede, GermanyFree edition; Pro $14/year (3 PCs) or $20 one-time

Best for: Windows users who want cleaner, startup manager and registry tool in one place, bought once

Ashampoo GmbH & Co. KG has made Windows software in Rastede, Lower Saxony, since 1999, and WinOptimizer has more than 30 modules. The ones a CCleaner user reaches for first are disk and browser cleanup, a startup manager, registry cleaning and Windows privacy settings, which together mirror what the CCleaner product page lists.

The more important difference is licensing. There is a free edition, a 30-day trial of Pro, a yearly subscription for three PCs and a one-time licence for a single PC. Against CCleaner's Free, Professional and Professional Plus tiers, that last option is the one to look at if you dislike renewals. The shop does show list-price discounts, so read the real price at checkout.

What Ashampoo WinOptimizer does better than CCleaner

  • A one-time licence exists, which the CCleaner Professional page does not mention
  • German company with a published impressum and commercial register entry
  • Free edition and 30-day trial of the full version before paying
  • Offers uninstaller and driver updater as separate products, so you buy only what you use

Where Ashampoo WinOptimizer is a step down from CCleaner

  • No Mac, Android or iOS edition, where CCleaner covers all of them
  • Does not bundle a duplicate file finder as deep as dedicated tools
  • Prices are shown as discounts from a higher list price

Standout against CCleaner. It is the one European suite that matches the CCleaner Windows layout and lets you pay once.

O&O Software

covers the Windows privacy layer that wiping browser data never reaches

Berlin, GermanyShutUp10++ free; O&O Defrag Pro €49.90 list (perpetual)

Best for: Privacy-minded Windows users who want to see and set every telemetry option

O&O Software GmbH in Berlin has built Windows system software since 1997. ShutUp10++ is freeware that lists Windows 10 and 11 telemetry and privacy settings as individual switches, each with a recommendation, and it is maintained for current Windows 11 builds.

This is the piece CCleaner does not replicate. CCleaner clears browser history and cookies after the fact, while ShutUp10++ changes what Windows is allowed to collect in the first place. O&O Defrag, sold as a permanent licence, adds the disk side. Neither tool tries to be a one-click cleaner, so you will not get a single "health score".

What O&O Software does better than CCleaner

  • ShutUp10++ is free, with a per-setting explanation instead of a bulk clean
  • Targets Windows data collection itself, not just traces in browsers
  • O&O Defrag is a permanent licence, not a subscription
  • Berlin company with a published impressum

Where O&O Software is a step down from CCleaner

  • No temp-file, browser or registry cleaner to replace the CCleaner scan
  • Separate tools rather than one suite
  • Defragmentation matters little on SSD-only machines

Standout against CCleaner. A free, maintained German tool that shows each Windows telemetry setting and leaves the decision to you.

Revo Uninstaller

a dedicated uninstaller with a leftover scan, beside the general CCleaner cleaner

Ruse, BulgariaFree edition; Pro $24.95 list (perpetual licence)

Best for: Anyone whose slow machine is full of half-removed programs

Revo Uninstaller is made by VS Revo Group Ltd. in Ruse, Bulgaria, and has been since 2007. It runs a program's own uninstaller, then scans for the files, folders and registry entries left behind, which is where a long-used Windows install collects most of its debris.

CCleaner is a general cleaner with uninstalling as a side feature. Revo does only this job and, by its own description, scans for leftovers after the program's own uninstaller has run. There is a free edition, and Pro is a lifetime licence with a year of updates, at a list price of $24.95, plus a 60-day money-back guarantee, the longest in this category.

What Revo Uninstaller does better than CCleaner

  • Dedicated leftover scan instead of an uninstaller tab
  • Free edition and a lifetime Pro licence
  • 60-day money-back guarantee
  • Bulgarian company inside the EU

Where Revo Uninstaller is a step down from CCleaner

  • No browser cleaning, startup manager or privacy tuning
  • Updates beyond the first year cost extra
  • Windows only

Standout against CCleaner. It handles the leftovers that a general cleaner only reports, and it can be bought once.

Abelssoft PC Fresh

a deliberately small tuning tool in place of the Health Check

Ganderkesee, Germany€29.95

Best for: People who want faster boot and fewer background services, with less to configure

Abelssoft is the trading name of Ascora GmbH in Ganderkesee, Lower Saxony. PC Fresh manages startup entries, background services and system settings with a simpler interface than the large suites. The full version is €29.95 with at least six months of updates, and there is a 30-day test version.

Compared with CCleaner's paid Health Check, which the Professional page describes as analyzing, tuning and updating the PC automatically, PC Fresh asks you to make the choices yourself. Disk and browser cleanup is a separate Abelssoft product called WashAndGo, so PC Fresh alone is narrower than WinOptimizer.

What Abelssoft PC Fresh does better than CCleaner

  • Full version needs no subscription
  • Simple interface with fewer modules to understand
  • German company with published impressum

Where Abelssoft PC Fresh is a step down from CCleaner

  • Cleanup is a separate product, so it is narrower than CCleaner
  • Free updates are only promised for at least six months

Standout against CCleaner. A small German tuner for people who want fewer switches than CCleaner Professional shows.

TreeSize

finds the space hog first, which a one-click cleaner skips

Trier, GermanyFree edition; Personal €20.40/year; Professional from €40.80/year (both with a 14-day trial)#1 in PC Optimization Software

Best for: Anyone whose disk is full and who wants to see what is filling it

TreeSize comes from JAM Software GmbH in Trier, Germany, and has been in use for over 25 years. It scans a drive once and shows usage as a treemap, pie chart or sortable list, so a 40GB folder three levels down becomes visible. Duplicate detection, bulk delete and scheduled reports are included.

CCleaner removes known junk categories; TreeSize shows you your own data. That is a different tool for a different problem, and for a full disk it is often the faster route. It runs on-premise with no cloud dependency, and there is a free edition for home use. Personal is €20.40 a year, Professional starts at €40.80 a year.

What TreeSize does better than CCleaner

  • Shows exactly which folders use the space, instead of generic junk categories
  • Free home edition with no cloud dependency
  • Handelsregister entry in Trier is published in the imprint

Where TreeSize is a step down from CCleaner

  • No registry, startup or privacy features
  • Paid editions are yearly subscriptions
  • Windows only

Standout against CCleaner. A treemap that finds the real space hog faster than a junk-file scan.

Duplicate Cleaner Pro

goes deeper on local duplicates than CCleaner's Cloud Drive Cleaner

United Kingdom#5 in PC Optimization Software

Best for: Windows users with doubled-up photo, music or video libraries

Duplicate Cleaner is made by DigitalVolcano Software Ltd, a UK-registered company publishing Windows utilities since 2006. It deep-scans a drive or network share for redundant files of any type, then compares photos after cropping or resizing, music by audio content or tags, and video by frames or metadata.

Per its Professional page, CCleaner has a Cloud Drive Cleaner that scans OneDrive and Google Drive for duplicates and large old files. Duplicate Cleaner works on local and network storage and is a perpetual licence with a 7-day trial. The company states it is UK-registered, which places it outside the EU and EEA.

What Duplicate Cleaner Pro does better than CCleaner

  • Content-based matching of near-identical photos and re-encoded video
  • Perpetual licence, no subscription
  • Selection Assistant to choose which copies to keep

Where Duplicate Cleaner Pro is a step down from CCleaner

  • United Kingdom, outside the EU and EEA
  • Exact price shows only at checkout
  • Duplicates only, nothing for registry or startup

Standout against CCleaner. It matches near-identical photos and re-encoded videos, not just files with the same name and size.

DriverMax

stands in for the paid Driver Updater, with a free tier and a lifetime option

Bucharest, RomaniaFree version installs up to 2 drivers/day; Pro from $4.95/month, $10.39/year (list $20.78), or $29.80 lifetime (list $149); $270 lifetime for unlimited PCs#2 in PC Optimization Software

Best for: Windows users who want driver updates without a yearly CCleaner Professional plan

DriverMax is made by Innovative Solutions Grup SRL, founded in Bucharest, Romania in 1997, and its terms name Romanian law and courts. It checks installed hardware against its own driver catalogue and shows how a driver package went for other users before you install it. Replaced drivers are archived, and Windows creates a restore point before each install.

CCleaner lists a Driver Updater as a Professional feature. DriverMax covers only that job but gives a free scan and two installs a day with no account, plus $10.39 a year (list $20.78) or a $29.80 lifetime licence (list $149). The lifetime and yearly prices appear as discounts, so check at checkout.

What DriverMax does better than CCleaner

  • Free version with unlimited scans and no account
  • Lifetime licence that never renews
  • Every replaced driver is archived with a restore point

Where DriverMax is a step down from CCleaner

  • Free tier is capped at two installs a day
  • Does not clean, uninstall or defragment
  • Windows only

Standout against CCleaner. Shows how an update went for other users before you install it.

CleanMyMac

the Mac cleaner with a malware scan, for CCleaner for Mac users

Limassol, Cyprus (MacPaw founded in Kyiv, Ukraine)From €39.95/year (1 Mac)

Best for: Mac users who want one complete cleaning app from an EU contracting entity

CleanMyMac comes from MacPaw, founded in Kyiv in 2008, and its terms name MacPaw Way Ltd. in Limassol, Cyprus as contracting party, under Cypriot law. It cleans system junk and large forgotten files, finds duplicate photos, uninstalls apps with leftover data, monitors memory and CPU and runs a malware scan. It is notarized by Apple.

CCleaner for Mac exists too, listed on the CCleaner site. CleanMyMac costs from €39.95 a year for one Mac, with a free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The caveat sits in MacPaw's own privacy policy, which lists storage in Cyprus, the United Kingdom, the United States and Ukraine.

What CleanMyMac does better than CCleaner

  • Contracting entity in the EU, under Cypriot law
  • Includes a malware scan
  • Free trial and 30-day money-back guarantee

Where CleanMyMac is a step down from CCleaner

  • Privacy policy lists US and UK storage next to Cyprus and Ukraine
  • Yearly subscription as the main model
  • Mac only

Standout against CCleaner. The most complete Mac cleanup app on this page, sold by an EU entity.

OnyX

the free, account-free Mac maintenance tool

FranceFree (donations)

Best for: Experienced Mac users who want caches and indexes cleared without a licence server

OnyX has been published by Titanium Software in France since 2003 and is free, supported by donations. It verifies the structure of system files, runs maintenance tasks, deletes caches, rebuilds databases and indexes and uninstalls applications. A separate version is released for each macOS version, including macOS 27 in September 2026.

It is a technical tool and looks like one. EP found no registered company behind it: the privacy policy names a person and the French regulator. With no account, licence server or subscription, there is little to hold, which is the opposite of an app that needs a login to clean your disk.

What OnyX does better than CCleaner

  • Completely free, with no account or licence server
  • Kept current for every macOS release since 2003
  • Exposes Finder, Dock and Safari settings otherwise needing the command line

Where OnyX is a step down from CCleaner

  • Technical interface aimed at experienced users
  • No registered company found behind it
  • No malware scan or duplicate finder

Standout against CCleaner. Free Mac maintenance that has followed each macOS release since 2003.

Disk Doctor

the cheapest Mac cache cleaner, bought once

London, United Kingdom$2.99 one-time purchase via the Mac App Store#6 in PC Optimization Software

Best for: Mac owners who need caches and old downloads cleared now and then

Disk Doctor is by FIPLAB Limited, a Mac and iOS developer working from London since 2009. It scans for application caches and logs, browser data, old Mail downloads and files over 100MB, and clears them in a few clicks. It is sold only through the Mac App Store, as a $2.99 one-time purchase.

Against CCleaner for Mac and CleanMyMac, that is a fraction of the price for a much narrower tool. It has no malware scan and no hardware monitoring. The United Kingdom is outside the EU and EEA, covered by an adequacy decision, and there is no direct-download trial, so you buy before you test.

What Disk Doctor does better than CCleaner

  • One-time $2.99 purchase, no subscription
  • Nothing to configure

Where Disk Doctor is a step down from CCleaner

  • United Kingdom, outside the EU and EEA
  • No trial outside the Mac App Store
  • Much narrower than the paid Mac suites

Standout against CCleaner. A $2.99 one-time purchase beside Mac cleaners that charge yearly.

fiplab.com/apps/disk-doctor Visit Disk Doctor

What actually breaks when you switch

Moving off CCleaner is mostly about habit and settings, since there is little data to export. Your custom cleaning rules, the list of cookies you chose to keep and any scheduled runs live inside CCleaner and have no import path into a European tool.

Write down the rules you rely on, then recreate them. Uninstall CCleaner itself with Revo Uninstaller, so its leftovers go with it. If you use the Free edition, nothing needs cancelling. If you bought Professional, check the "Withdraw from contract" link in the CCleaner footer and your renewal date.

Expect to replace one program with two or three. A Windows user will typically want a suite or uninstaller, a privacy tool and a disk analyzer. That is more installers, but each does one job, and several of them are free. Registry cleaning is the one feature that both CCleaner and Ashampoo WinOptimizer list, so decide deliberately whether you still want it. Business users on CCleaner Cloud have no matching managed console here.

Is CCleaner a European product, since Gen has an office in Prague?

Partly in geography, not in contract. Gen's careers page says its global workforce has dual headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic and Tempe, Arizona,. The legal notice on ccleaner.com, however, names Gen Digital Inc. as the copyright holder and trademark owner, and the site offers a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link that belongs to US privacy law.

EP applies one test to every listing: the contracting entity, the headquarters and the ultimate owner must all be in Europe. A product whose parent is a US corporation fails the third part, even when a large team sits in Prague. That is the reason it appears here as an incumbent, not as a tool, and the reason a Czech development team does not turn it into a European cleaner.

Is the free CCleaner enough, or do I need a paid alternative?

For temp files and browser data, a free tool is enough, and several European options are free: Revo Uninstaller Free, O&O ShutUp10++, the Ashampoo WinOptimizer free edition, TreeSize Free and OnyX on the Mac. The question is what else you want. The Professional page lists the Driver Updater and Health Check as features of the paid editions.

A paid replacement makes sense when you want a single program that bundles several jobs, or a perpetual licence that will not renew. Ashampoo WinOptimizer's one-time option and DriverMax's lifetime plan are the two clearest examples on this page. If you only clean browsers occasionally, you may not need to pay for anything.

Which one to pick

If you ran CCleaner mostly on one Windows PC, start with Ashampoo WinOptimizer, and add Revo Uninstaller and O&O ShutUp10++ if you want more depth on uninstalling and privacy. If the real problem is a full disk, install TreeSize before any cleaner. If you only want a driver updater, DriverMax with its free tier is enough to try, and Duplicate Cleaner Pro suits a duplicated photo or music library.

On a Mac, CleanMyMac is the full replacement, OnyX is the free technical option, and Disk Doctor is the cheap single-purpose cleaner. Keep CCleaner if you manage a fleet through CCleaner Cloud, need the Android or iOS apps, or value the one-click convenience of a single window; nothing on this page is a European match for those.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a single Windows suite, Ashampoo WinOptimizer from Rastede, Germany, is the closest match: cleanup, startup, registry and privacy settings in one program, with a free edition and a one-time licence. If you only need part of the job, Revo Uninstaller covers uninstalling, O&O ShutUp10++ covers Windows privacy, and TreeSize covers disk space. On the Mac, CleanMyMac and OnyX are the replacements.

No tool on this page is a pure browser-cleaning product. Ashampoo WinOptimizer lists browser cleanup among its modules, and CleanMyMac clears browser data on the Mac. The other tools split the job: Revo Uninstaller removes program leftovers, TreeSize shows what is large, and O&O ShutUp10++ changes Windows settings. Most browsers also have their own clear-data setting.

CCleaner's legal pages list a General Privacy Policy, a Consent Policy, a Products Policy and a Cookies Policy under Gen Digital Inc., plus a "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link. EP did not extract the exact data categories from those pages on 20 October 2026, so it states none. Read the products policy for the edition you use before relying on any specific claim.

Several European tools sell one. Ashampoo WinOptimizer has a one-time licence for one PC, Revo Uninstaller Pro is a lifetime licence with a year of updates, O&O Defrag is a permanent licence, Duplicate Cleaner Pro is perpetual, and DriverMax has a lifetime plan. Updates beyond the included period can cost extra, so check each vendor's terms.

Yes, three. CleanMyMac from MacPaw (contracting entity in Cyprus) is the full suite, with a malware scan. OnyX from Titanium Software in France is free and technical. Disk Doctor from FIPLAB in London is a one-time $2.99 cache cleaner from the Mac App Store, though the United Kingdom is outside the EU and EEA.
