Bitdefender vs ESET

Bitdefender and ESET are the two European endpoint vendors most often near the top of independent tests, from Bucharest and Bratislava. In AV-Comparatives' Business Security Test for March to June 2026 both were Approved, Bitdefender with slightly higher protection scores and ESET with fewer false alarms. Both also sell 24/7 managed detection and response, so the choice rests on console, tiers and partner.

Protection in independent testing

In AV-Comparatives' Business Security Test for March to June 2026, Bitdefender blocked 399 of 400 real-world cases, a 99.8 per cent protection rate, and ESET 395, or 98.8 per cent. In the March malware test Bitdefender scored 99.5 and ESET 99.2 per cent. Both received the Approved Business Security Product award. On protection alone, Bitdefender is slightly ahead.

False alarms

In the same real-world test ESET produced two false alarms against Bitdefender's four, and both had zero false alarms on common business software in the malware test. The numbers are small, but false alarms are what make an IT team switch features off, which is why the gap is worth noting. On this measure, ESET has the edge.

Managed detection and response

Bitdefender MDR provides 24x7 defence from its global security operations centres, with the GravityZone Business Security Enterprise platform included, plus variants for MSPs and an MDR Plus tier. ESET also sells Managed Detection and Response combining its technology with ESET experts, and describes 24/7 MDR as part of its platform. Both answer who reads the alerts; neither is uniquely placed.

The engine inside other products

AV-Comparatives notes that Cisco, G Data, SenseOn and VIPRE use the Bitdefender engine in addition to their own protection. That makes Bitdefender's detection technology a building block across the market, not only a product under its own name. AV-Comparatives' list of reused engines does not include ESET's. For buyers who value a widely reused engine, this is a Bitdefender point.

ESET, spol. s r.o. gives its global headquarters as Bratislava and cites more than 30 years in security; it offers a 30-day free business trial. Bitdefender dates its work to 2001, says it protects users in more than 170 countries and offers free business trials. Both are EU companies with a long record, and nothing here separates them.

When neither Bitdefender nor ESET fits

A large organisation with its own security operations centre may want a platform built around that team: TEHTRIS sells an XDR platform with SOAR orchestration in a single console. G DATA, whose business product was also Approved in the same AV-Comparatives test, is the German option.
