European Alternatives to Adobe Commerce (Magento)

Looking for a European alternative to Adobe Commerce (Magento)? Adobe Commerce is sold by Adobe Inc., a US company in San Jose, California. Adobe's general terms put customers outside North America and Japan with Adobe Systems Software Ireland Limited under Irish law, while the free Magento Open Source code is published and maintained by Adobe on GitHub.

Eleven European platforms can take over from it, from open-source engines you host yourself to hosted and enterprise suites, built by companies in Germany, Poland, France, Belgium and Norway.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Magento Open Source is free OSL 3.0 code that Adobe maintains, and Adobe Commerce is the paid product. For customers outside North America and Japan, Adobe's general terms name Adobe Systems Software Ireland Limited and Irish law.
  • Shopware (Schöppingen) is the nearest full replacement: a free MIT-licensed Community Edition, then Rise from €600 and Evolve from €2,400 a month excluding VAT.
  • Sylius (Poland) is the developer-focused option, with an MIT-licensed core and its own Sylius vs. Magento comparison page. Saleor (Poland) is for headless builds.
  • PrestaShop (Paris), OXID eSales (Freiburg) and Odoo (Belgium) are open-source routes with different centres of gravity: shop modules, German mid-market B2B, and a full business suite.
  • Spryker and SCAYLE are enterprise platforms sold on quote, and neither publishes a price.

Why people leave Adobe Commerce (Magento)

Magento started as an open-source PHP shop platform and is still two things. Magento Open Source is free software that anyone can download and run, published by Adobe on GitHub under the Open Software License 3.0. Adobe Commerce is the paid product built on it, offered by Adobe as a managed platform (Adobe Commerce on Cloud) and as a software-as-a-service product (Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service). Merchants use it for large catalogues, many storefronts and B2B.

That mix makes the jurisdiction question unusual. The free code can be run on your own server in Europe, which is the strongest answer to any jurisdiction concern. The paid product is a contract with Adobe.

Adobe's general terms put customers outside North America and Japan in a relationship with Adobe Systems Software Ireland Limited under Irish law, unless local law overrides, while the parent is Adobe Inc. in San Jose, California. I could not open Adobe's Commerce-specific enterprise agreement, so this page does not claim what it says.

The eleven platforms below are European, and several are open source like Magento: Shopware, Sylius, Saleor, PrestaShop, OXID eSales and Odoo. Others are enterprise suites (Spryker, SCAYLE), a headless engine (Crystallize), and two smaller options (JTL-Shop, Gambio). They are not interchangeable, so the choice depends on whether you run your own developers.

  • The paid product is a contract with a US group Adobe Commerce is sold by Adobe. Under Adobe's general terms a customer outside North America and Japan has its relationship with Adobe Systems Software Ireland Limited under Irish law, and the parent, Adobe Inc., is in San Jose. That is an EU entity, so the argument is the group behind it, not where a dispute is heard. I could not verify the terms of the Commerce enterprise contract itself.
  • The open-source code is controlled by one company Magento Open Source is licensed under the OSL 3.0, and contributions to the main repository require an Adobe Contributor License Agreement. You can run the code anywhere, but the roadmap and releases come from Adobe, and a community fork, Mage-OS, exists because some developers want a different direction. Mage-OS describes itself as a non-profit association registered in Poland, but I could not verify its register entry.
  • Self-hosting is a real alternative, not a promise If you already run Magento Open Source, European open-source engines let you keep the same model: your code, your server, your choice of host. Shopware and Sylius are MIT-licensed, Saleor is BSD-3-Clause, and PrestaShop, OXID eSales and Odoo describe themselves as open source. You then own updates, security patches and uptime, as you do with Magento.
  • The price of the paid product is not public I could not load a price for Adobe Commerce from Adobe's own pages, so no figure is quoted here. Among the platforms below, Shopware, Saleor, JTL, Crystallize and Gambio publish prices, while PrestaShop, OXID eSales, Spryker and SCAYLE did not show a price I could verify. Ask each for a quote on your own catalogue and order volume.

What you have to replace, not just match

Inventory what your Magento store really uses: custom modules, B2B price lists, the number of storefronts and languages, the ERP and payment connectors, and how much of the theme is custom. A near-standard Magento store maps cleanly onto Shopware or PrestaShop. A heavily customised one is a rebuild, and Sylius, Saleor or Spryker are the options built for that kind of work.

Plan the migration as a project. Export products, customers and orders, rebuild the checkout and tax logic, and keep your URLs with 301 redirects. Run both stores side by side until orders on the new one are confirmed. If you are still on an old Magento 1 or an out-of-date 2.x version, moving to a supported platform may cost no more than upgrading.

Shopware

Best for: Development teams building a shop that must behave exactly one way

Sylius is provided by Sylius sp. z o.o. in Poland (NIP 7272867768). Its terms and its privacy policy list different seat addresses (Białe Błota and Łódź), so I could not confirm a single registered office.

The Community Edition is open source and MIT-licensed on GitHub. Its site also offers Sylius Plus, a commercial edition, and a page comparing Sylius with Magento. I found no public price.

It is a framework to build on, not a shop to configure.

What Sylius does better than Adobe Commerce (Magento)

  • MIT licence on the core
  • Symfony-based, with an API for headless builds
  • Direct Magento comparison material on its own site
  • Polish company in the EU

Where Sylius is a step down from Adobe Commerce (Magento)

PrestaShop is provided by PrestaShop SA, 82 Avenue du Maine, 75014 Paris, registration number 497 916 635. The terms of its website are under French law with the Paris Commercial Court; these are website terms, not a contract for a hosted shop.

The software is open source and can be installed on your own hosting. I could not verify a price for its hosted offers, so no amount is quoted.

Modules cover payment methods, carriers and marketplaces.

What PrestaShop does better than Adobe Commerce (Magento)

  • Software with no licence fee, like Magento Open Source
  • Back office aimed at shop owners
  • French company under French law

Best for: Merchants who want the shop, stock and accounting in one system

It is a business-system choice before it is a storefront choice.

What Odoo eCommerce does better than Adobe Commerce (Magento)

  • Shop, stock and accounting in one suite

Its homepage describes a digital commerce platform for B2B enterprises, with a B2B self-service portal and an enterprise marketplace. I found no public price.

  • B2B portal and marketplace as named product areas

What actually breaks when you switch

Leaving Magento is a rebuild of the front: themes, custom modules and checkout logic do not transfer, and extensions need a European equivalent. Export products, customers and orders, and keep your URL structure with redirects.

Compare total cost, not licence fees. Magento Open Source is free but needs hosting and developers, and most platforms here have a similar profile. Ask for quotes with your own catalogue size, traffic and number of storefronts.

Agency choice matters more than platform choice. Shopware, Sylius, Saleor, OXID eSales and Spryker run through partner agencies, so look at the partner lists in your region before you commit.

Which European platform is closest to Magento?

Shopware is closest in shape: an open-source PHP platform on Symfony with B2B components, multiple sales channels and an extension marketplace, backed by a German company. Sylius is closest for developers who want a framework, and OXID eSales is the older German alternative with a similar profile.

None of them reproduces Magento's extension catalogue. If your store depends on specific extensions, check each platform's extension list first.

Can I host these myself like Magento Open Source?

Yes, for most of them. The code of Shopware (MIT), Sylius (MIT) and Saleor (BSD-3-Clause) is public on GitHub, PrestaShop and Odoo describe themselves as open source, and OXID eSales publishes a community edition.

For Spryker, SCAYLE, Crystallize, JTL-Shop and Gambio I could not verify a self-hosting route from their own pages.

What about Mage-OS, the Magento fork?

Mage-OS is a community fork of Magento Open Source run by a group that describes itself as a registered non-profit association in Poland. It is not listed here because I could not verify its register entry or a contracting entity, and it keeps the Magento codebase.

If your priority is to stay on the Magento code, it is worth a look. If your priority is a European vendor with a verifiable entity, the platforms below are the cleaner choice.

Does the contract with Adobe matter for a Magento store?

If you only run Magento Open Source, you have no contract with Adobe for the software, just a licence. If you buy Adobe Commerce, the contract is with Adobe, and Adobe's general terms name an Irish entity for customers outside North America and Japan.

For most merchants the practical points are the price, the support and who controls the roadmap. The jurisdiction is a secondary point.

Which one to pick

If you want the nearest thing to Magento with a European company behind it, choose Shopware. If your team writes a lot of custom code, look at Sylius, or at Saleor if you want a headless build. If you want a lighter self-hosted shop, PrestaShop is the simplest, and OXID eSales is the German mid-market option.

Odoo suits those who want the shop in the same system as stock and invoices. Spryker and SCAYLE suit large companies and are sold on quote, Crystallize suits developer teams, and JTL-Shop and Gambio suit smaller German-market sellers.

Be realistic about the gap. Magento has a very large extension catalogue and agency base that none of these match. The reasons to move are a wish to depend on a European vendor, a different roadmap, or lower running cost, not a missing feature. If you want to stay on the Magento code, Mage-OS is the community route, though I could not verify its register entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shopware is the best all-round match on this page, because it combines an open-source core, B2B features and published plans in one product. Sylius is better for a development team building something non-standard, and Saleor for a headless build.

No. Magento is now part of Adobe Inc., which is based in San Jose, California. For customers outside North America and Japan, Adobe's general terms name Adobe Systems Software Ireland Limited as the contracting party, under Irish law.

Magento Open Source is, under the Open Software License 3.0 according to its GitHub repository, and Adobe maintains it. Adobe Commerce is the paid product built on it, offered on Adobe's cloud as a managed platform or as software as a service.

I could not load a price from Adobe's own pages, so no figure is given here. Magento Open Source is free to download, and you pay for hosting and development. Ask Adobe for a quote based on your sales.

The Community Edition is free. Rise starts at €600 a month and Evolve at €2,400 a month, both excluding VAT, and Beyond is priced on request. Shopware Intelligence+ is an optional add-on at €29 a month on Community and €19 on the paid plans.

Saleor lists a free Sandbox, Select at $1,599 a month for up to $200,000 of monthly sales with 0.8% on orders above that, Volume at $3,999 up to $1,000,000 with 0.4%, and Enterprise on request from 0.2%. The core is open source and free to self-host.

Shopware lists B2B components on Evolve and customer-specific pricing on Beyond. Spryker is built around B2B and marketplace models, and OXID eSales describes B2B and B2C editions. Sylius lists a preconfigured B2B setup for manufacturers and wholesalers.

Saleor is an API with no required storefront, Crystallize is a headless platform combining product information and commerce, and Sylius and Shopware both describe API-first builds. Expect to build a front end for any headless option.

Crystallize AS is a Norwegian company (organisation number 919134216). Norway is in the EEA but not the EU.

I cannot give a figure. Catalogue and customers can be exported and imported, but themes, custom modules and checkout logic must be rebuilt. Get a fixed-scope quote from an agency of the target platform, and plan a period where both stores run.
