Are you making images or fixing them?
Two different jobs live in this category and the tools barely overlap, so naming yours removes most of the list.
Making them: Black Forest Labs and Stability AI produce the models, Freepik AI packages generation with a stock library, and Recraft generates editable vectors rather than pixels.
Fixing them: PhotoRoom cuts out products and replaces backgrounds at catalogue scale, and Clipdrop handles cleanup, uncrop, relight, background removal and upscaling on images you already have.
The commercial reality is that most businesses need the second far more often than the first. A marketplace seller with four hundred product photographs has a background problem, not a creative one.
Does Europe actually compete on image models?
On open models it leads, and this is worth stating plainly because the usual story about European AI says otherwise.
Stable Diffusion made image generation something anyone could run, and it came from Stability AI in London. When its core creators — Robin Rombach, Andreas Blattmann and Patrick Esser — left to found their own lab in 2024, they founded it in Freiburg, not California. Black Forest Labs' FLUX models are now the open-weight benchmark, and the company raised at a multi-billion valuation on that basis.
What both do that the American closed models do not is publish weights. A downloaded model runs on your hardware, generates without a network connection, can be fine-tuned on your own material, and creates no record anywhere of what you asked for.
Where Europe does not lead is the polished consumer product. Midjourney's output quality and taste remain the reference for people who just want a good picture, and no European product matches its ease.
Why does batch processing decide the value?
Because the difference between a novelty and a business tool is whether it handles four hundred images or one.
PhotoRoom is built around that. Cutting out one product photograph is a two-minute job anyone can do; doing it to an entire catalogue consistently, so every listing has the same white background and the same framing, is a week of work that nobody wants and that quietly does not get done. Batch editing collapses it, and the API puts the same processing inside an e-commerce platform or an import pipeline so it happens automatically on upload.
Clipdrop covers the same principle for a different set of operations — cleanup, uncrop, relight, upscaling — with batch processing and an API alongside mobile and desktop apps.
For a marketplace seller, a small brand or an agency handling client catalogues, this is the entire argument. Generation quality is a conversation; throughput is the invoice.
What happens to the images you upload?
They are processed by someone, and for commercial photography that matters more than people assume.
Product images before launch, interior photographs of premises, documents captured on a phone, images containing people who never consented to a US service seeing them — all of it passes through whichever tool you chose. PhotoRoom in Paris, Freepik in Málaga and Clipdrop's French operation all process in the EU under GDPR.
Clipdrop carries the caveat: the team and processing are French, and the company is owned by Jasper, an American business. That is not the same as a US-established processor, and it is not the same as an EU-owned one either.
The only arrangement that removes the question entirely is a downloaded model. FLUX and Stable Diffusion weights run on your own hardware, where the image never leaves the building and no policy has to be trusted.
When do you need vectors instead of pixels?
Whenever the asset has to be resized, recoloured or edited afterwards — which is most brand work, and where generated images normally fail.
A generated PNG is finished. Scale it up and it blurs, change the brand colour and you regenerate and hope, hand it to a designer and they redraw it. Recraft generates real SVG vectors instead, so an icon set or an illustration arrives as editable paths a designer opens in Illustrator or Figma and adjusts.
Its second useful idea is custom brand styles: train a style once and every subsequent generation matches it, which is what makes a set of thirty icons look like a set rather than thirty separate experiments.
Freepik AI approaches the same need from the other direction, pairing generation with a very large licensed stock library, vectors and templates — so when generation does not produce the right thing, something already drawn is a click away rather than a separate subscription.
