European Alternatives to WP Engine
Looking for a European alternative to WP Engine? WP Engine's terms name WPEngine, Inc. of 504 Lavaca Street, Austin, Texas as the provider and Texas law with the courts of Travis County as the forum, and its pricing page lists a Managed Hosting Platform from $28 a month (Essential, billed annually) through $400 a month (Business) to custom Enterprise contracts.
The European tools below host WordPress under a UK, German, Swiss, Danish or French contracting entity, from fully managed WordPress plans (Krystal and Mythic Beasts in the UK) to agency-oriented platforms (mittwald in Germany) and WordPress-ready shared hosting (Hostpoint and hosttech in Switzerland, Simply.com in Denmark, netcup, o2switch and manitu).
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Key takeaways
- WP Engine's terms are governed by Texas law and name the courts of Travis County, Texas, as the forum; the provider is WPEngine, Inc. of Austin.
- WP Engine lists Essential at $28 per month billed annually, Business from $400 per month, and Enterprise on request, and the 99.99% SLA starts at Business.
- WP Engine terms renew automatically for terms equal to the previous one, and early termination for anything but WP Engine's breach makes the remaining fees due.
- Krystal (UK) lists managed WordPress at GBP 15, GBP 35 and GBP 50 per month excluding VAT, with free migration of the first three sites.
- Mythic Beasts (UK) sells managed WordPress from GBP 35 per month on a shared server, GBP 85 on a private virtual server and GBP 199 for clustered setups.
Why people leave WP Engine
WP Engine sells one thing: WordPress that somebody else keeps running. Its Managed Hosting Platform takes care of WordPress, PHP and MySQL updates, daily backups, SSL, SSH access, a global CDN delivered through Cloudflare and a WordPress-specific cache called EverCache. The company says it was founded in 2010 in Austin, Texas, and it bought the freelancer-oriented host Flywheel in 2019. People arrive at WP Engine because they are tired of patching plugins and restoring broken sites themselves.
They look beyond it for reasons that are mostly contractual and financial. The terms name WPEngine, Inc. of 504 Lavaca Street, Austin, as the provider and put every dispute before the state or federal courts in Travis County, Texas, under Texas law.
For a European company that means a US contracting party and a US forum, with GDPR protection resting on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework certification the privacy policy cites. Procurement teams that must keep personal data under European law often stop at that point.
The second reason is price. WP Engine lists Essential at $28 a month billed annually ($336 paid up front, with a euro option on the pricing page), Business at $400 a month and Enterprise only on request.
Essential runs on a shared environment and carries no uptime SLA; the 99.99% SLA and isolated resources start at Business, a jump of more than ten times. European hosts that sell managed WordPress at a lower rung fill that gap, and a few fill it with a contract that stays in Europe.
- The contract is American, from the forum to the currency WP Engine's terms of service are governed by Texas law and send disputes to the courts of Travis County. Payment is by card unless an order says otherwise, and the default pricing page quotes US dollars (a euro selector exists). A UK, German or Swiss host puts the contract, the support desk and the data protection authority in a jurisdiction you can reach, and for some buyers that alone justifies the move.
- The commitment is annual and the exit is expensive The terms say the agreement renews automatically for successive terms equal to the previous one, and that if you end it early for any reason other than WP Engine's breach, all remaining fees become due immediately. Essential is billed annually on the pricing page. Several European hosts here run one-month terms (mittwald, manitu) or monthly billing (Krystal), so a trial site can leave without a bill for the rest of the year.
- The step from Essential to Business is large Essential is a shared environment with an estimated 25,000 to 400,000 visits a month and 10 to 50 GB of storage. The 99.99% SLA, isolated resources, phone support and managed site migration only appear on Business, listed from $400 a month. Mythic Beasts and Krystal publish intermediate managed tiers at GBP 35 to GBP 85 a month, which suit a site that outgrew a shopfront but does not need a four-figure plan.
- Many extras are sold on top of the platform On the pricing page, AI-powered plugin and theme updates, uptime monitoring, NitroPack front-end optimisation, advanced DDoS protection with a managed WAF and premium onboarding appear as optional add-ons on Essential, and several are bundled only from Business. The ecosystem products (Smart Search AI, Advanced Custom Fields, WP Offload Media) are separate purchases. A European host that bundles backups, caching and migration is easier to price in advance.
What you have to replace, not just match
The platform itself is the first thing to replace, because WP Engine is more than a server.
It runs the update schedule for WordPress core and PHP, keeps backups between 30 and 60 days, offers one-click staging, hands you ten premium themes plus Genesis Blocks, and lets you build a site in a free account and transfer it to a client. Check each of those on the European candidate, since a shared cPanel host gives you the server but not always the person watching it.
Then list what sits around the site. WP Engine users often run the Smart Plugin Manager for automatic updates with visual regression tests, Local for development, WP Migrate to move databases, Advanced Custom Fields and NitroPack, all products WP Engine owns or sells.
None of them stops working when you leave, because ACF and Local are ordinary software, but the tight coupling to the hosting panel ends, so decide who watches updates, who tests them and where backups live once the move is done.

How each alternative compares to WP Engine
Best for: UK and European site owners who want WordPress managed for them, at a monthly rather than annual commitment.
Against WP Engine's Essential plan, Krystal's Personal tier costs GBP 15 a month excluding VAT for one WordPress site (upgradeable to five), 20,000 visits, 5 GB of NVMe storage and daily backups that can be raised to hourly.
Business adds hourly backups and a 100 GB CDN allowance at GBP 35, and an Agency plan at GBP 50 covers five sites on 50 GB with a 200 GB CDN allowance. Monthly, annual (16% off) and two-year (25% off) billing are offered.
The move is the part Krystal pushes hardest. It migrates your first three sites free, offers the first month free, and gives credit for the unused time of the contract you are leaving. Krystal Hosting Ltd is registered in London and holds ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus and Certified B Corp status, but it lists two US data centres among its sites, so ask for the location in writing.
What Krystal does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on entry price, with plans from GBP 15 excluding VAT
- WP Engine on contract flexibility, with monthly billing available
- WP Engine on migration help, since three sites move for free
- WP Engine on contract venue for buyers who want English law over Texas law
Where Krystal is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on enterprise tiers, because Krystal's WordPress range stops at the Agency plan
- An EU-only clause, because the UK sits outside the EU
- Data location clarity, since US data centres appear on Krystal's list
Standout against WP Engine. Krystal is the only host here that offers credit for the remaining months of the contract you are leaving.
Best for: Technical owners of busy WordPress sites who want engineers on call and a UK-registered company behind them.
Mythic Beasts offers managed WordPress in three tiers. WordPress Shared is listed from GBP 35 a month (GBP 350 a year, which the page describes as 12 months for the price of 10) for four sites on a shared server with up to 40 GB.
Business starts at GBP 85 for eight sites on a private virtual server with up to 100 GB, and Enterprise at GBP 199 gives unlimited sites on a mirrored pair of VPS or 12-core servers. Its plan table lists 24/7 service monitoring and daily backups.
Compared with WP Engine, the climb is gentler: a site that outgrows the shared tier moves to a private server at GBP 85 rather than $400. The company is Mythic Beasts Limited at Companies House, privately held with founders owning more than 90% of the shares. All hosting servers are in UK data centres, and the pages read state no trial or refund period, so decide before you pay a yearly invoice.
What Mythic Beasts does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on mid-range pricing, with a private virtual server at GBP 85
- WP Engine on ownership transparency, as a founder-held UK company with a Companies House entry
- WP Engine on server choice, because the Enterprise tier names mirrored hardware
Where Mythic Beasts is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on a bundled developer toolkit, since staging and themes are not described on the page read
- Krystal on free migration and trial terms
- An EU-only clause, because all hosting servers sit in the UK
Standout against WP Engine. Mythic Beasts publishes the hardware behind each WordPress tier, from a shared server to mirrored 12-core machines.
Best for: Agencies and freelancers in the EU who want a single German operator and short contract terms for client WordPress sites.
mittwald addresses agencies and freelancers first, which is the audience WP Engine's Agency programme chases too. Its site lists a dedicated "Hosting für WordPress" page next to TYPO3, Joomla, Shopware and WooCommerce hosting, plus a container platform called mStudio. Webhosting S, M and L cost EUR 13, EUR 19 and EUR 36 a month excluding VAT with a one-month term and no setup fee, and its footer says offers are directed to business customers only.
The operating company is Mittwald CM Service GmbH & Co. KG in Espelkamp, which states that all hosting runs in its own German data centre, ISO 27001 certified and powered by renewable electricity. We could not read the WordPress page in text form, so details such as staging or automatic updates are not confirmed here; ask mittwald which of them are standard before you migrate a client portfolio.
What mittwald does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on jurisdiction, because the contracting party and the data centre are in Germany
- WP Engine on commitment, with a one-month term and no setup fee
- WP Engine on ownership clarity, since the founder and managing directors are named and no outside group is described
Where mittwald is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on published WordPress tooling, because the page could not be read for this comparison
- Cheaper hosts on entry price, since Webhosting S costs EUR 13 before VAT
- Private buyers, since the offers address businesses only
Standout against WP Engine. mittwald is the one host here that keeps hosting, support and the data centre under one German roof with a one-month contract.
Best for: Swiss and DACH site owners who want WordPress hosted in Switzerland with migration handled for them.
Hostpoint runs a dedicated WordPress page, stating that more than 100,000 WordPress sites sit on its servers. Standard at CHF 15.90 includes 100 GB and 10 domains, Smart at CHF 17.90 adds Nginx with caching and an AI website assistant, Business at CHF 29.90 adds prioritised support, and Flex M at CHF 170 offers 6 vCPU and Valkey and Memcached object caching for agencies and developers. All prices include VAT and free migration is part of each WordPress package.
Against WP Engine this is optimised hosting with a human on the phone seven days a week rather than a managed update service. Hostpoint AG is in Rapperswil-Jona, and data sits in a Glattbrugg data centre. Switzerland is outside the EU, so a clause that demands EU-only providers rules it out, and Hostpoint lists no WordPress-specific update automation on the page read.
What Hostpoint does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on price at the entry end, with CHF 15.90 including VAT
- WP Engine on phone access, with support from Monday to Sunday
- WP Engine on migration, which is free on all four packages
- WP Engine on Swiss data residency for Swiss buyers
Where Hostpoint is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on automated WordPress updates, which Hostpoint does not describe
- WP Engine on staging and visual regression tests, not listed on the page read
- EU-only contract clauses, because Switzerland is not in the EU
Standout against WP Engine. Hostpoint includes free migration in every WordPress package and answers the phone seven days a week.
Best for: Swiss buyers who run a few WordPress sites and want staging without paying a managed-platform price.
hosttech sells WordPress hosting as its own product line, with four plans: Basic from CHF 8.90 (50 GB, 2 domains, one WordPress install), Select at CHF 14.90 (150 GB, five domains, two installs and a staging option), Deluxe at CHF 29.90 (350 GB, ten domains, five installs, tuned for Elementor and WooCommerce) and Supreme at CHF 59.90 with 750 GB and ten installs. It describes container isolation and NVMe storage as the basis for speed.
The comparison with WP Engine is easy to state: hosttech is a lot cheaper, shows the install count per plan, and has the staging option from the second plan up, but it does not describe a managed update service. The pages read were in German, and the hosttech GmbH sits in Richterswil, Switzerland, so an EU-only clause excludes it. Confirm the minimum term and VAT basis, which the pages do not state.
What hosttech does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on entry price, from CHF 8.90
- WP Engine on plan clarity, with install counts and storage per tier
- WP Engine on data location for Swiss buyers, with a Swiss server location stated
Where hosttech is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on managed updates and security scanning, which hosttech does not list
- English-language material, since the pages read were in German
- EU-only contracts, because hosttech is Swiss
Standout against WP Engine. hosttech lists the number of WordPress installations per plan, from one on Basic to ten on Supreme.
Best for: Small WordPress sites in the EU that want a test copy and one-click updates at a first-year price near zero.
Simply.com devotes a page to WordPress. Its control panel offers an optimise tool for database and cache, a repair function for errors in the MySQL database and files, an update function for core, plugins and themes, and a test environment that copies the live site so you can try changes.
The page says its servers block malware and patch known WordPress vulnerabilities automatically. Basic suite, with 10 GB, costs EUR 0.49 a month in the first year and EUR 6.99 on renewal, excluding VAT.
That makes the tooling the closest thing to WP Engine's staging and update buttons at this price. The limits are the 14-day money-back window, shorter than most, and the renewal jump to fourteen times the first-year price. Simply.com A/S in Skanderborg belongs to the team.blue group, and data is stored in the EU, mostly in Denmark. Phone support is reserved for larger packages.
What Simply.com does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on first-year price, at EUR 0.49 a month excluding VAT on Basic
- WP Engine on EU data storage, which Simply.com states
- WP Engine on contract jurisdiction, because the contracting entity is Danish
Where Simply.com is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on performance services such as a bundled CDN and tuned cache, none of which the page names
- WP Engine on support depth, because phone support is limited to the larger packages
- Independent owners, since Simply.com is part of team.blue
Standout against WP Engine. Simply.com puts a staging-style test copy, a repair button and an update button into a EUR 0.49 first-year plan.
Best for: Developers and cost-conscious owners who accept a 12-month term and want SSH on every plan.
netcup lists SSH access on every web hosting plan and a WordPress toolkit from Webhosting 2000, which costs EUR 4.03 a month including VAT. Webhosting 1000 is EUR 2.69, the lowest regular price among the candidates, and the prices are stated to hold for the whole term. A 30-day satisfaction guarantee applies, and netcup displays ISO 9001, 14001, 27001 and 27701 certifications.
Next to WP Engine this is a developer shortcut rather than a managed service: you get the toolkit and shell access, and you do your own update discipline. The product page read shows a 12-month minimum term, similar to WP Engine's annual billing. netcup GmbH in Karlsruhe belongs to the Austrian Anexia group, and its data centre list includes Virginia and Singapore, so choose the location when you order.
What netcup does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on price, since EUR 4.03 including VAT buys the plan with the WordPress toolkit
- WP Engine on shell access, listed on every plan
- WP Engine on published certifications, with four ISO standards displayed
Where netcup is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on managed operations, because netcup leaves updates and restores to you
- Monthly hosts on commitment, since the plan read has a 12-month minimum
- Location certainty, because US and Singapore sites are offered next to European ones
Standout against WP Engine. netcup sells the WordPress toolkit from EUR 4.03 a month including VAT, with ISO 27001 and 27701 displayed.
Best for: French-speaking owners with several WordPress sites who value unlimited storage and cPanel.
o2switch does not sell a WordPress plan by name. It sells all-inclusive hosting with cPanel, unlimited NVMe storage, unlimited sites, mailboxes and databases, and its homepage says front-end servers optimise CMS platforms such as WordPress, Joomla and Magento. Grow costs EUR 7 a month excluding VAT with 8 vCPU and 16 GB RAM, and backups run daily for 30 days on Grow, 45 on Cloud and 90 on Pro.
For a WP Engine customer with a portfolio, the draw is paying one price for many sites rather than per environment. The drawbacks are plain: no staging or managed update service is described, the pages are in French, and a 30-day refund closes the account and deletes the hosted data. The Cloud plan jumps from EUR 1.86 to EUR 16 after the first year, so budget for the renewal.
What o2switch does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on site count, because every plan allows unlimited sites
- WP Engine on backup retention, up to 90 days on Pro
- WP Engine on data residency, with data centres in France that o2switch states it operates itself
Where o2switch is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on managed WordPress services, none of which are described
- English-language buyers, because the site is in French
- Renewal predictability on Cloud and Pro
Standout against WP Engine. o2switch gives unlimited sites, mailboxes and NVMe storage on every plan, so a many-site portfolio has one price.
Best for: German-speaking owners of a small WordPress site who want a one-month term and a provider-run data centre.
manitu includes one-click WordPress and Nextcloud on all four plans, together with a free domain, unlimited mailboxes, PHP 8.1 to 8.4 and Let's Encrypt certificates. Webhosting M costs EUR 1 a month for the first six months and EUR 6.09 afterwards, VAT included at the visitor's country rate, with a one-month term and no setup fee. Daily backups are kept for 14 days and whole sites, directories or mailboxes can be restored.
This is a tidy basic host, not a managed WordPress platform: nothing on the pages read describes automatic WordPress updates, staging or a CDN. manitu GmbH in St. Wendel says it runs a self-owned data centre in the same building as its office on renewable electricity. Pages and legal text were in German, and no trial or certification is stated.
What manitu does better than WP Engine
- WP Engine on commitment, with a one-month term
- WP Engine on entry price, at EUR 1 for the first six months
- WP Engine on data centre ownership, which manitu states it runs itself
Where manitu is a step down from WP Engine
- WP Engine on every managed feature, from staging to automatic plugin updates
- English-speaking buyers, because the material read was German
- Large sites, since 14 days of backups is shorter than WP Engine's 30 to 60
Standout against WP Engine. manitu pairs a one-month contract with a data centre that sits in the same building as its office.
What actually breaks when you switch
Plan for three things before you cancel. First, WP Engine's backups are kept for 30 to 60 days and are tied to its portal, so export a full copy of files and database yourself.
Second, annual billing and automatic renewal mean the last invoice may already cover months you will not use, and the terms make early termination fees payable. Third, premium themes bundled with the platform and the Smart Plugin Manager licence do not follow you, so confirm licences for any theme or plugin you activated through WP Engine.
Then rebuild the routine. On WP Engine, updates, SSL, caching and CDN are somebody else's job. On a shared host you inherit them: schedule updates, test on a copy (Simply.com and hosttech list staging or test environments), and decide who gets the alert when a site fails. Email is the other trap: Hostpoint, manitu and o2switch bundle mailboxes with their plans, so decide up front whether to move your mail or leave it with its current provider.
Is a European WordPress host as fast as WP Engine?
No vendor page in this comparison publishes a benchmark against WP Engine, so a speed claim would be a guess. What the pages do show is architecture. WP Engine uses a WordPress-tuned cache (EverCache) and a Cloudflare-delivered CDN. Hostpoint lists Nginx with caching from its Smart plan, hosttech names container isolation and NVMe storage, Krystal includes a CDN allowance on Business and Agency, and mittwald states a 99.99% uptime figure for its web hosting plans.
Test with your own site. Every host here has a refund window or a trial: 30 days at Hostpoint, hosttech and netcup, a 30-day trial at Krystal, 60 days on Krystal's ordinary shared plans. Copy the staging site over, measure Core Web Vitals from your visitors' country and compare it with the current WP Engine site before you cancel anything.
Does moving away from WP Engine break my site?
A WordPress site is files plus a database, so the move itself is routine. Download a full backup, import it on the new host, point the domain after testing. WP Engine's Smart Plugin Manager and its premium themes are the parts to check: the themes are bundled with the platform, so confirm your licence terms before you rely on them elsewhere.
Krystal migrates your first three sites free, and Hostpoint says migration is included with its WordPress packages. At hosts without that service, expect to do the move yourself or hire an agency. Keep the old WP Engine account running until DNS and email have settled, remembering that an annual contract will not refund the remaining months.
Which one to pick
If you chose WP Engine because someone else should run WordPress, pick Krystal or Mythic Beasts: both sell managed WordPress under their own name, both are British, and both cost a fraction of WP Engine's Business plan. Krystal is easier for a first move (free migration, trial, credit for the old contract), Mythic Beasts suits a larger or more technical site that may grow into a private server. Agencies hosting client sites in the EU should look at mittwald first.
If your WP Engine plan was mainly a fast, safe place for a small site, you can step down to Hostpoint or hosttech in Switzerland, Simply.com in Denmark, netcup, o2switch or manitu, and save the managed-service fee. Accept that you take over updates and restores. And if the contract must stay inside the EU, drop the UK and Swiss options and choose among mittwald, netcup, manitu, o2switch and Simply.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you want WordPress run for you, start with Krystal in the UK (managed WordPress from GBP 15 a month, free migration of three sites) or Mythic Beasts (staff-managed WordPress from GBP 35 a month). For agencies that host client sites, mittwald in Germany is built for that audience. For a cheaper, less managed route with WordPress tooling, Hostpoint and hosttech in Switzerland, Simply.com in Denmark and netcup in Germany are the alternatives to compare.
The contracting entities on this page are in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and France, with no US parent among them. WP Engine is a US company, and a US provider can be required to hand over data held by its overseas operations under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. That risk is a legal question for your own advisers, but a European contracting party and a European data centre remove it from the discussion.
Krystal and Mythic Beasts sell products named managed WordPress. Krystal's Personal plan costs GBP 15 a month excluding VAT for one site with 20,000 visits and 5 GB of NVMe storage; Mythic Beasts' shared tier starts at GBP 35 for up to four sites and 40 GB. Hostpoint and hosttech sell WordPress-focused hosting at lower prices, but they are closer to optimised shared hosting than to a managed service.
Yes. mittwald states a one-month contract term with no setup fee, manitu does the same, and Krystal bills monthly with discounts of 16% for annual and 25% for two-year prepayment. WP Engine's own terms renew automatically for a term equal to the last, so the shorter commitment is one of the clearest practical differences when you are testing a move.
Krystal, Mythic Beasts, Hostpoint and hosttech are outside the EU, in the UK and Switzerland, both covered by EU adequacy decisions according to the site's own tool pages. A contract that demands an EU-only provider will not accept them. For those cases choose mittwald, netcup, manitu, o2switch or Simply.com, whose contracting entities are in Germany, France and Denmark.
