European Alternatives to Vanta
Looking for a European alternative to Vanta? Vanta's Master Subscription Agreement is concluded with Vanta Inc., a Delaware corporation based in San Francisco, so the platform that holds your risk register and control evidence is contracted under a US entity. Its pricing page lists tiered plans with add-ons such as questionnaire automation, which makes the total cost depend on the package you choose.
These European tools cover ISO 27001, GDPR, NIS2 and DORA, contract with entities in the EU or UK, and range from open-source GRC to platforms bundled with certified experts.
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Why people leave Vanta
Vanta is a compliance automation platform: it connects to your cloud accounts, identity provider and HR system, pulls evidence on a schedule and maps it to frameworks such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001.
Its pricing page lists 400+ integrations and a framework range that runs from SOC 2 and GDPR to HIPAA, HITRUST and ISO 42001, plus an auditor directory for the certification step. For a start-up that needs a SOC 2 report to close US deals, it is a very complete product.
The reasons European buyers look elsewhere are mostly structural. The Master Subscription Agreement is concluded with Vanta Inc., a Delaware corporation in San Francisco, and is governed by California law with disputes heard in San Francisco County.
The platform ends up holding your risk register, your policies, your list of failing controls and read access to your cloud accounts, which is a map of your weak spots. Many security teams would prefer that map under a contract with an EU or UK entity.
A second group leaves for fit rather than jurisdiction. Vanta is built around the SOC 2 culture of the US market, while a German supplier asked for TISAX, a Dutch hospital asked for NEN 7510 and a financial entity preparing for DORA often wants templates, language and an auditor network that match. The European tools on this page start from ISO 27001, GDPR and NIS2 and treat SOC 2 as the extra framework instead of the default.
- The contract sits in California Vanta's terms name Vanta Inc. of San Francisco as the contracting party and apply California law, with disputes heard in San Francisco County. The terms also contain U.S. export control and sanctions clauses that the customer confirms. None of this is unusual for a US vendor, but a European buyer that wants the contracting entity, the court and the governing law to be in Europe cannot get that from this agreement. Every vendor on this page contracts from the EU or UK.
- Transfers rest on the Data Privacy Framework Vanta's privacy policy says personal information can move from outside the United States to the United States, and names the EU standard contractual clauses as a safeguard. It also states that Vanta self-certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, the Swiss-U.S. framework and the UK Extension. That is a legal mechanism, not a hosting location. Teams that would rather not rely on an adequacy decision can pick a vendor that keeps contract and data in Europe.
- Pricing is personalized, with add-ons The pricing page offers Essentials, Plus, Professional and Enterprise, and sends you to a personalized quote instead of showing figures. Essentials covers one compliance framework, and questionnaire automation is an add-on on the lower plans. A second framework or a customer questionnaire flow therefore changes the price. Cyberday, Conformio, eramba and CISO Assistant publish figures, which makes the budget visible before a sales call.
- SOC 2 first, European frameworks second Vanta's framework list leads with SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA and HITRUST. NIS2, DORA, TISAX and C5 are not in the list on the pricing page, and a custom framework option exists for anything else. Secfix, Kertos, secjur and Cyberday name NIS2 directly, Kertos adds C5, and verinice carries BSI IT-Grundschutz. If your customers send European questionnaires, the native fit matters more than the integration count.
What you have to replace, not just match
Moving off Vanta means replacing more than a checklist. First there is the evidence flow: the integrations that read your cloud accounts, identity provider, code repositories and HR system, and the tests that run on top of them.
Then there are the documents the platform holds, meaning policies, the risk register, vendor assessments and the employee onboarding and training records that auditors sample. Last, if you use Vanta's trust center or questionnaire automation, you also have a customer-facing page and an answer library to rebuild.
The tools on this page cover these parts unevenly, so decide which parts you actually use. Secfix, Kertos, Hicomply and secjur are closest to the automated model, with API integrations and continuous checks.
ISMS.online, Conformio, eramba, CISO Assistant and verinice are process tools: you document the controls and attach evidence yourself. Orbiq replaces only the trust center and questionnaire side. A realistic plan lists the integrations you rely on, the frameworks in scope this year and whether an external auditor already expects Vanta exports.
Keep the audit calendar in mind. A SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 surveillance audit looks back over a period, so evidence collected in Vanta stays with Vanta unless you export it first. Switching right after an audit window closes is far easier than switching in the middle of one, and a vendor that offers a guided onboarding or an import of existing policies saves weeks.

How each alternative compares to Vanta
Best for: European start-ups and SMEs going for ISO 27001, TISAX or NIS2 who want automation plus advice.
Secfix works in the same way as Vanta: connections to AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Jira feed a list of 250+ automated checks, with policies, risk, vendor and device monitoring on the side. The difference against Vanta is the framework order, which puts ISO 27001, NIS2, DORA and TISAX in front, and the contracting party, Secfix GmbH in Munich.
Secfix states that customer data is stored and processed within the EU, a statement Vanta's pages do not make. It also offers in-house experts next to the software. Against that, prices are on request only, and the integration catalogue is likely smaller than the 400+ that Vanta advertises, so test your own stack in a demo.
What Secfix does better than Vanta
- EU-only data storage stated by the vendor
- NIS2, DORA and TISAX in the native framework list
- German GmbH as contracting entity
- Experts available alongside the platform
Where Secfix is a step down from Vanta
- Prices not published, same as Vanta
- Smaller integration catalogue is likely
- Aimed at SME and mid-market, not large multi-entity groups
Standout against Vanta. It is the European tool that most closely copies Vanta's check-driven workflow.
Best for: Mid-sized European companies that want ISMS and privacy work with human support on the paid tier.
Kertos goes wider than Vanta on the European side: ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 42001, GDPR, NIS2, the EU AI Act, TISAX and C5 are all in its list, alongside SOC 2. It also keeps records of processing, DPIAs and TOMs in the same platform, and an AI agent named KAIA drafts policies and evidence.
Where Vanta sells software with partner service providers, Kertos sells tiers (Essential, Pro, Premium) with certified experts and, on higher plans, an external data protection officer. Hosting is European AWS infrastructure, so the region is in the EU but the cloud provider is US-owned. Pricing is a tailored offer.
What Kertos does better than Vanta
- C5, TISAX and the EU AI Act in the framework list
- Privacy records (RoPA, DPIA) in the same platform
- Certified experts and an external DPO on higher tiers
- German GmbH with a register entry
Where Kertos is a step down from Vanta
- Tailored pricing only
- Expert tiers cost more than software alone
- Runs on a US-owned cloud provider's EU region
Standout against Vanta. It combines a compliance platform with a data protection officer in one contract.
Best for: Organisations new to ISO 27001 that want a method and templates more than automated checks.
ISMS.online, now branded IO, starts from the management system rather than from API checks. Pre-configured templates, risk, asset and policy management and a guided path from gap analysis to certification are the core, with ISO 27001, NIS 2, DORA, ISO 42001 and SOC 2 mapped. Against Vanta, which leans on integrations to prove controls, this is a more document-led way of working.
The contracting entity is Alliantist Limited in Brighton, so a UK company, and the primary data centre is in the UK with further centres in Europe, the USA and Australia. That last point needs a question about which region holds your tenant. Pricing is a bespoke quote.
What ISMS.online does better than Vanta
- Guided certification path for first-time ISO 27001 projects
- NIS 2 and DORA in the framework list
- A UK company with an England and Wales registration
- Templates for every major framework
Where ISMS.online is a step down from Vanta
- Less deep automated technical evidence collection
- Data centres outside Europe are listed too
- Bespoke quote, no public prices
Standout against Vanta. It is the platform to pick when the main problem is learning the ISO 27001 process.
Best for: Small companies that want EU data centers and a price before a sales call.
Cyberday answers the pricing complaint against Vanta most directly. It publishes EUR 3,200 a year for under 20 employees and EUR 4,500 for 20 to 49, offers a 14-day trial with all features and stores data in EU data centers. Its framework collection is large, and it adds vendor assessments, a trust center, internal audits and management reviews.
The model is an ISMS workflow with security tasks, not a check engine like Vanta's. The public pages do not show how deeply it reads cloud configuration. Pricing follows headcount, which suits a small team but can climb for a large workforce with few systems in scope.
What Cyberday does better than Vanta
- Published prices by employee count
- EU data centers stated
- Free 14-day trial with all features
- Finnish entity under Finnish law
Where Cyberday is a step down from Vanta
- Less visible technical automation than Vanta
- Price grows with headcount
- Terms specify arbitration in Helsinki in Finnish
Standout against Vanta. It is one of the few tools in the category with a figure you can put in a budget today.
Best for: UK and European mid-size firms that need both ISO 27001 and SOC 2 on one platform.
Hicomply is the closest European answer to Vanta's two-framework pitch. It names ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR and DORA, lists 75+ integrations, includes an AI copilot and a cloud control monitor, and assigns a customer success manager on every plan. Plans start from GBP 5,300 a year, though the plans page shows inconsistent figures for the same tier.
Hicomply Ltd is a UK company, which suits buyers who accept a UK entity but not a US one. It has opened a Denver office, so check who signs the contract if you are outside the UK. The data location was not stated on the pages we reviewed.
What Hicomply does better than Vanta
- Published starting price
- Customer success manager on every plan
- SOC 2 and ISO 27001 together under a UK entity
- No per-seat fees stated
Where Hicomply is a step down from Vanta
- Data location not stated
- 75+ integrations against Vanta's 400+
- Plans page figures are inconsistent
Standout against Vanta. A named success manager is included on every plan, not sold as a tier.
Best for: German-speaking SMEs that want a German-hosted platform with optional experts.
secjur positions its platform as a digital compliance office. It states hosting in Germany, lists 60+ API integrations, cross-maps ten-plus standards and lets you define custom frameworks. Beyond information security it adds data protection, whistleblower protection, quality and AI management, which Vanta handles in separate products or not at all.
The homepage claims full coverage of NIS2 and DORA requirements, a claim to verify against your own controls. Self-service assistants walk you through the steps, so you may not need a CISO. Pricing is on request and most of the marketing is in German, which can slow a non-German team.
What secjur does better than Vanta
- Hosting in Germany stated on the homepage
- Whistleblower protection and data protection in the same suite
- NIS2 and DORA content
- Custom frameworks
Where secjur is a step down from Vanta
- Mostly German-language site
- 60+ integrations against Vanta's 400+
- Pricing on request
Standout against Vanta. It is the only tool here that names Germany, not just the EU, as the hosting location.
Best for: Companies whose main need is GDPR records and requests, with ISO 27001 and TISAX on top.
DataGuard comes from the privacy side. Its modules cover records of processing, DPIAs, data subject requests, vendor risk and breach handling, and it reports more than 4,000 client organisations after absorbing DPOrganizer. Vanta treats GDPR as one framework among many, while DataGuard treats it as the core product.
The security programme is described as built toward ISO 27001 and TISAX, so for a pure certification project it is less direct than Secfix. Base, Pro and Enterprise are quoted on request, and Pro adds expert support for teams without a data protection officer.
What DataGuard does better than Vanta
- Deeper privacy modules (RoPA, DPIA, DSAR)
- EU hosting and a German company
- Expert support tier on Pro
- Large European customer base
Where DataGuard is a step down from Vanta
- No published prices
- Less automated technical evidence collection than Vanta
- Broad module set can mean paying for unused parts
Standout against Vanta. It is the privacy-first option, where Vanta is security-first.
Best for: Teams with in-house GRC skills who want flat pricing and the option to self-host.
eramba covers risk, compliance, incident and privacy management and automated account reviews. Where Vanta prices per package, eramba sells a flat annual fee with unlimited users: EUR 2,500 a year on-premises and EUR 5,000 a year as SaaS, with a free community edition below that.
It is a toolkit, not an evidence collector, so someone has to configure risks, controls and workflows. Enterprise SaaS customers can choose EU or US hosting, so pick EU explicitly. The vendor is Eramba LTD with offices in London and Bratislava, and the terms page renders client-side, so confirm the contracting entity on the order.
What eramba does better than Vanta
- Free community edition
- Flat annual fee with unlimited users
- On-premises option
- EU hosting selectable
Where eramba is a step down from Vanta
- Little automated evidence collection
- Needs someone who knows GRC
- SaaS also offers US hosting
Standout against Vanta. Unlimited users at a flat fee removes the per-seat arithmetic.
Best for: Technical security teams that want to run an open-source GRC in their own infrastructure.
CISO Assistant from intuitem SARL in Vélizy-Villacoublay is open source in its community edition under AGPLv3, and it ships with 220+ frameworks in 27 languages. Audit management, risk assessment and evidence centralisation are the core, and previous audits can be reused. Vanta is closed source and SaaS-only as far as its pages show.
Prices are public: EUR 39 per contributor per month for Pro SaaS and EUR 2,400 per instance per year on-premises for one to five seats. It does not pull evidence from cloud accounts the way Vanta does, and the SaaS hosting region was not stated, so self-hosting is the cleanest route to a known location.
What CISO Assistant does better than Vanta
- Open-source community edition
- Self-hosting under your own control
- 220+ frameworks in 27 languages
- Public pricing
Where CISO Assistant is a step down from Vanta
- Limited automated evidence collection
- Self-hosting needs admin skills
- SaaS hosting region not stated
Standout against Vanta. You can read and run the code that holds your compliance data.
Best for: Small companies that need GDPR first and ISO 27001 or NIS2 modules later.
heyData is a privacy platform that grew into information security. Data Privacy plans are published from EUR 59 a month billed annually, and every plan includes an appointed data protection officer. ISO 27001, NIS2, EU AI Act and whistleblower modules sit on the same platform, with 50+ integrations.
The scope is narrower than Vanta on certification work. The entry tier is documentation-led with limited vendor risk and no DPIA, and the hosting provider is described as ISO 27001 certified but not named. Liability caps per tier run from EUR 50,000 to EUR 250,000, which is worth reading before signing.
What heyData does better than Vanta
- Published entry prices from EUR 59 a month annually
- Data protection officer included in every plan
- German GmbH with a commercial register number
Where heyData is a step down from Vanta
- Narrower certification automation than Vanta
- Hosting provider not named
- Liability caps by tier
Standout against Vanta. It is the only tool here that includes a data protection officer in every published plan.
Best for: German public sector and critical infrastructure organisations that need IT-Grundschutz.
verinice from SerNet GmbH in Göttingen has been open source since 2007 and covers IT-Grundschutz, ISO 27001, VDA ISA/TISAX, GDPR, NIS 2 and business continuity. It comes as verinice.cloud and verinice.onprem. Vanta has no IT-Grundschutz content in the framework list we saw, so for BSI work the comparison is lopsided in verinice's favour.
It is a classic GRC tool with little integration-driven automation, the documentation is mostly German, and prices are not on the main pages. The licence name and data location were not stated, so ask before assuming an open-source licence you can audit.
What verinice does better than Vanta
- BSI IT-Grundschutz and TISAX coverage
- Open source with an on-premises edition
- German entity with a long track record
Where verinice is a step down from Vanta
- Little automated evidence collection
- Mostly German-language
- Prices not shown on main pages
Standout against Vanta. It speaks the language of German public-sector auditors natively.
Best for: Small businesses with a limited budget that want to implement ISO 27001 step by step.
Conformio from Advisera is organised around the mandatory ISO 27001 documents, a risk register and a project module, plus awareness training on Professional. Starter costs EUR 145 a month and Professional EUR 245 a month, with a 14-day trial. Compared with Vanta's quoted packages, a small team can budget this in minutes.
It is the least automated tool on the page. User accounts are capped at 3 on Starter and 5 on Professional, and it does not read cloud accounts for evidence. Advisera has a US office as well as Zagreb, so confirm the contracting entity, although the terms fall under Croatian law.
What Conformio does better than Vanta
- Published EUR monthly prices
- 14-day free trial
- Terms under Croatian law
Where Conformio is a step down from Vanta
- No automated evidence collection
- User account caps
- A US office also exists
Standout against Vanta. It is the cheapest published route to ISO 27001 documents in this category.
Best for: Teams that only use Vanta for its trust center and security questionnaires.
Orbiq replaces one part of Vanta, the customer-facing side. Its trust center runs an NDA flow and is built around the NIS2, DORA and ISO 27001 requests buyers send, and a vendor assurance module handles AI-supported questionnaires and continuous monitoring of your own suppliers.
It is not an ISMS and does not collect control evidence. Trust Center plans are Free, Team at €85 a month and Business from €190 a month, with Vendor Assurance by demo. The data location was not stated on the pages reviewed. Pair it with an ISMS tool if you also need certification.
What Orbiq does better than Vanta
- Free trust center plan and published prices
- Vendor assessment of your own suppliers included
Where Orbiq is a step down from Vanta
- No control evidence collection or ISMS
- Data location not stated
- Lighter than enterprise third-party risk platforms
Standout against Vanta. It has a free plan, which no other trust center product here can match.
What actually breaks when you switch
Expect three kinds of friction. Data is the first: Vanta holds policies, risk entries, vendor records and test histories, and you have to export them in a form the new tool can import or at least an auditor can read.
Request exports early and check what is missing, because test history and timestamps are what auditors sample. Integrations are the second: every connection to your cloud accounts, identity provider and code host has to be re-authorised, and a tool with fewer connectors may leave gaps you fill by hand.
The contract is the third. Vanta's terms renew an order for a further year unless you give notice 30 days before the end of the period, and payments are non-cancelable, so the right moment to switch is the end of a term, with the notice sent in time. Plan retraining as well: people who approve access reviews and policy acknowledgements need a short walkthrough, and a parallel run of a few weeks protects your next audit.
Do I have to leave Vanta to be GDPR compliant?
No. Vanta's privacy policy cites the EU standard contractual clauses and a self-certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, so a transfer basis exists on paper. Whether that is enough depends on your own risk assessment, your data protection officer and what you store in the platform. Control evidence, screenshots of cloud settings and employee lists are personal and security-sensitive data, which is why some buyers prefer a contracting entity in Europe.
The practical test is a vendor review you would run on any supplier: ask where the data is hosted, who the sub-processors are and which law governs the contract. Vanta's hosting regions were not something we could confirm, so ask. A European vendor makes those answers shorter, but it does not replace the review.
Will an auditor accept evidence from a different tool?
Auditors assess your controls and the evidence behind them, not the software that collected it. ISO 27001 certification bodies work with documents, records and interviews, so an ISMS built in Secfix, Kertos or ISMS.online is a normal starting point. For SOC 2, Hicomply and secjur name SOC 2 among their frameworks, but check the auditor you plan to use before you commit.
Ask your auditor which exports they want, such as policy PDFs, access review records and test results with timestamps. Then ask the new vendor to produce a sample. Doing this before you sign is cheaper than discovering a gap in the first audit on the new platform.
Which one to pick
If you want the Vanta workflow with a European contract, start with Secfix or Kertos for automated checks and expert support, and add Hicomply when SOC 2 is also on the roadmap. If the budget must be visible, Cyberday, Conformio, eramba and CISO Assistant publish figures. For a first ISO 27001 project run by people who need a method, ISMS.online is the guided path.
For sovereignty, secjur names German hosting, and the open-source options let you self-host: CISO Assistant for a broad framework library, eramba for a flat fee, verinice for IT-Grundschutz. Choose DataGuard or heyData when GDPR is the main job, and Orbiq if the trust center is all you use. If you depend on Vanta's 400+ integrations or on SOC 2 for US customers, the honest answer may be to stay and review the contract.
Frequently Asked Questions
For small and mid-sized teams aiming for ISO 27001, Secfix and Kertos from Munich are the closest in approach: automated checks plus expert support, under a German GmbH. ISMS.online is the guided option from the UK, Cyberday publishes prices by headcount, and Hicomply covers ISO 27001 and SOC 2 together. If you want open source, look at CISO Assistant or eramba.
Cyberday lists EUR 3,200 a year for companies under 20 employees, Conformio lists EUR 145 and EUR 245 a month, and Hicomply shows plans from GBP 5,300 a year. eramba lists EUR 2,500 a year on-premises and EUR 5,000 a year as SaaS, and CISO Assistant lists EUR 39 per contributor per month. Secfix, Kertos, ISMS.online and secjur quote on request, as does Vanta.
Yes, three of them. eramba has a free community edition and on-premises enterprise editions, CISO Assistant has an AGPLv3 community edition that runs in Docker, and verinice offers verinice.onprem next to its cloud edition. Self-hosting keeps data in your infrastructure, but your own team then runs and secures the system, and none of them collect evidence from cloud accounts as automatically as a SaaS platform.
Some do. Secfix runs 250+ automated checks, Hicomply lists 75+ integrations, secjur 60+ API integrations and heyData 50+ integrations. Vanta lists 400+ integrations on its pricing page, so a niche tool in your stack may be covered only by Vanta. ISMS.online, Conformio, verinice, eramba and CISO Assistant are closer to process tools where you attach evidence yourself.
Under the Master Subscription Agreement we read, an order form without another term runs one year, and it renews for successive one-year periods unless you notify Vanta at least 30 days before the period ends. Payment obligations are described as non-cancelable except as the agreement allows. Your order form can differ, so read it and set a calendar reminder 45 days before renewal.
