European Alternatives to Hertz
Looking for a European alternative to Hertz? The Hertz website terms are issued by The Hertz Corporation, which gives a postal address at 14501 Hertz Quail Springs Parkway, Oklahoma City, and refer to California Civil Code in the legal notice. The same terms say Hertz rents vehicles, construction equipment and industrial equipment, and that independent licensees also operate under its trade name.
The European car rental platforms below name contracting entities in Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and cover direct rental brands as well as comparison sites.
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects which tools are listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways
- The Hertz website terms name The Hertz Corporation in Oklahoma City and refer to California Civil Code, while Sixt names Sixt GmbH & Co. Autovermietung KG in Pullach, registered at the Amtsgericht Muenchen as HRA 81 061.
- Europcar publishes RCS Paris 489 099 903 and share capital of 110.000.000 EUR for Europcar International SASU, but says a station can be run by a franchisee, so the entity on your agreement can differ.
- Discover Cars, Sunny Cars and billiger-mietwagen.de are brokers: the vehicle comes from a supplier, and the deposit is arranged between you and that supplier.
- Mobility is the only cooperative on the page, with three plans priced in Swiss francs and a member plan that costs CHF 250.00 to activate.
- Arnold Clark Rental includes VAT, insurance and breakdown recovery in its stated rates, but the pages we read describe only a UK branch network.
Why people leave Hertz
Hertz is a vehicle rental company whose website terms are issued by The Hertz Corporation, with a postal address at 14501 Hertz Quail Springs Parkway in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The terms define "we" as that company plus the businesses it controls through a large majority stake. Anyone renting through hertz.com therefore starts from a contract drafted in the United States.
The same terms describe the business as renting vehicles, construction equipment and industrial equipment, with vehicle sales and insurance on a smaller scale. They add that independent licensees run rental operations under the Hertz name. A counter in a European airport can consequently belong to a licensee, and the party named on your rental agreement may not be the company that wrote the website terms.
People who look beyond Hertz in Europe usually have practical reasons first: a different home market, a rate that includes cover, a pick-up without a queue, or a booking site in their own language. The jurisdiction question comes second, and it is easier to answer once you know which legal entity each European alternative puts on its contract.
- The website terms point to California law The legal notice on hertz.com refers to California Civil Code and names a notice address in Park Ridge, New Jersey, next to the Oklahoma City head office. For a consumer in Berlin or Lyon, that is a US document sitting on top of a local rental. The European alternatives on this page publish an imprint or legal notice with a register number in Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland or the United Kingdom instead.
- The terms can change without notice to you Hertz states that it may amend its website agreement at any time at its own discretion, with a change taking effect as soon as it is posted, and it tells visitors to check the page for a new date. Continued use counts as acceptance. That wording sits in the website terms rather than in a rental agreement, but it shows who controls the text you are asked to accept.
- Licensees blur who your contract partner is Hertz says its licensees are independent businesses that operate under its trade name. Europcar, Goldcar and Green Motion describe a similar split between group companies and franchisees, so this is not a Hertz-only issue. The difference is that several alternatives name the Spanish, French or German entity on their legal pages, which makes it easier to see whom you are dealing with before you pay.
- Local needs beat a single global brand A traveller flying into Palma, a family renting a van in Lille, a commuter who needs a car twice a month in Zurich and a student comparing Mallorca offers have different problems. Sixt, Goldcar, ADA, Mobility and the comparison sites on this page each solve one of them with products Hertz does not describe on the pages we read.
What you have to replace, not just match
Replacing Hertz is mostly a question of which part of the rental you actually use. A holiday rental needs a car at an airport, cover for damage and a deposit you understand. A business account needs invoicing, driver lists and a rate agreement. A move needs a van or a truck. Each European tool on this page covers some of these, and none covers all of them in every country.
Three things are not replaced by a switch at all. Your Hertz loyalty status stays with Hertz, so a Sixt ONE, Privilege, Club Goldcar or Drive Green Rewards tier starts from zero. Any corporate rate agreement has to be renegotiated with the new provider. And rentals in the United States, where Hertz lists many local licensees, are not something the European brands on this page set out to replace.
If you rent construction or industrial equipment from Hertz, note that the European cards here are about cars, vans and trucks. The Hertz terms mention equipment rental as a business line, and none of the twelve tools on this page lists it.

How each alternative compares to Hertz
Best for: Travellers who want a large rental brand with a German legal entity and stations in many countries.
Sixt is the alternative that looks most like Hertz from the counter. Both run their own stations and rent cars and vans, and both run a loyalty scheme, which for Sixt is SIXT ONE with discounts of up to 20% on the German homepage. Sixt adds SIXT+ car subscription, a chauffeur service and airport transfers to the booking site.
Against Hertz, the contract partner on sixt.de is a German company with a register entry. The catch is that Sixt operates a separate US entity for US rentals, and the booking form we read defaults to drivers aged 30. Hertz is stronger in the United States, where it lists many local licensees.
What Sixt does better than Hertz
- Names a German register entry and VAT number in the imprint
- Offers a car subscription next to classic rental
- States stations in 105 countries on its homepage
- Bundles transfer and chauffeur service in the same account
Where Sixt is a step down from Hertz
- Separate US entity, so US rentals are not under the German imprint
- Younger drivers face a default age of 30 in the form we read
- No tariff or excess figures on the pages we read
Standout against Hertz. Sixt is the only tool here with a car subscription, a chauffeur service and a rewards scheme under one German-registered brand.
Europcar
French-run network with vans, trucks and electric models, strongest on legal transparency
Best for: Renters who want cars and light commercial vehicles from a French company with published country terms.
Europcar publishes the most complete legal identity on the page: Europcar International SASU, a Paris address, RCS Paris 489 099 903 and share capital of 110.000.000 EUR. It rents cars, vans and trucks, lists electric, hybrid and plug-in models, and runs the Privilege scheme with a standing 10% discount on the homepage.
Compared with Hertz, the pages we read give less detail on construction or industrial equipment, which Hertz mentions in its terms. Europcar also splits its privacy policy between the parent and franchisees, so the entity on a station rental agreement can differ from the one on europcar.com. We read only the en-us version of the site.
What Europcar does better than Hertz
- Shows its register number and share capital in the legal mentions
- Publishes country-specific terms instead of one global text
- Lists electric, hybrid and plug-in models on the homepage
- Covers vans and trucks as well as cars
Where Europcar is a step down from Hertz
- Franchisees and local entities can sit between you and the parent
- No hosting location for customer data on the pages we read
- Little on equipment rental, which Hertz mentions
Standout against Hertz. Europcar is the only tool here that prints share capital and a register number for its parent company in the legal mentions.
Best for: People living in Switzerland who need a car a few times a month at published francs fares.
Mobility is not a rental counter at all. It is a Swiss car sharing cooperative from Rotkreuz where you reserve a car in the app and open it with the same app. The home page says fuel, insurance and service are included and counts 3,500 vehicles at 1,800 locations, which are its own figures.
Set against Hertz, the appeal is a short trip priced by the hour and kilometre. The sporadic plan starts at CHF 3.00 per hour and CHF 0.65 per km after a CHF 39.90 activation. The member plan asks CHF 250.00 once. Switzerland is outside the EEA, and the imprint says Google Analytics data is sent to the USA.
What Mobility does better than Hertz
- Publishes fares in francs for three plans on the home page
- Includes fuel, insurance and service, according to the home page
- Offers a plan with no monthly fee for drivers under 28
- Runs as a cooperative that you can join as a member
Where Mobility is a step down from Hertz
- Switzerland only on the pages we read
- Journey access fee of CHF 2.50 to 5.00 on the sporadic plan
- Not suited to a week-long holiday rental abroad
Standout against Hertz. Mobility is the only cooperative on this page, and its member plan even lists discounted long-term rentals from Hertz as an extra.
Best for: Holiday renters who want to compare many suppliers in one search with euro prices.
Discover Cars is a comparison and booking site, so the car comes from a supplier and the booking sits under an agreement with Travel Drive GmbH, a Swiss-based corporation. The terms name affiliates in the UAE (Car Rental Technologies FZCO) and in Latvia (Discover Car Hire AS). The homepage shows per-day examples in euro, such as Los Angeles Airport from EUR 48.
That differs from Hertz in one respect that matters at the counter: the deposit is not governed by the booking agreement but arranged between you and the rental company. The site calls itself the most-visited comparison site, which is its own statement. The registration number is cut off in our extract, so we cannot quote it.
What Discover Cars does better than Hertz
- Searches many brands on one screen
- Shows prices in many currencies, euro included
- Advertises free cancellation offers on its homepage
- Works in many languages
Where Discover Cars is a step down from Hertz
- Adds a second contract layer between you and the supplier
- Deposit and damage handling follow the supplier, not the broker
- Swiss entity plus affiliates in the UAE and Latvia may process data
Standout against Hertz. Discover Cars is the only tool here whose homepage lists rental deals per US state and per country with euro from-prices.
Arnold Clark Rental
UK branch network where insurance, VAT and breakdown cover sit inside the rate
Best for: Drivers hiring in Britain who want insurance and VAT stated inside the rate.
Arnold Clark Rental is a trading style of Arnold Clark Finance Limited, with a mailing address in Stirling. The About page states over 35 branches across the UK. The homepage says rates include insurance, VAT and breakdown recovery, and lists unlimited mileage for hires of 4 days or more.
Against Hertz, it replaces the rental only for hires in Britain, since the pages we read show no stations elsewhere. The default driver age is 25, with options for 23 and 24. Dual control hire for learners and van hire are listed. The United Kingdom has an adequacy decision but is outside the EEA.
What Arnold Clark Rental does better than Hertz
- States that insurance, VAT and breakdown recovery are in the rate
- Lists dual control cars for learner drivers
- Allows drivers aged 23 and 24 as selectable options
- Offers a phone booking line
Where Arnold Clark Rental is a step down from Hertz
- UK only on the pages we read
- No fixed tariff shown
- Hertz is stronger for one-way or international trips
Standout against Hertz. Arnold Clark Rental is the only tool here with dual control cars for learner drivers.
Best for: Mediterranean holiday renters who accept choosing extras themselves in return for a low base rate.
Goldcar is run by Goldcar Spain S.L.U., with a CIF and a Registro Mercantil entry in its Aviso legal. The group operates through subsidiaries in Spain, Italy, France, Croatia and the United Kingdom, and serves other countries through franchisees under Goldcar Master SLU. The contracting party therefore depends on where you rent.
Its Key'n Go kiosk lets you collect keys in under 2 minutes at the airport terminal without queuing, according to the homepage. The model suits those who want to pay only for what they need. Against Hertz, Goldcar shows no business programme, no tariff and a thinner loyalty offer, limited to Club Goldcar points.
What Goldcar does better than Hertz
- Offers counter-free key pick-up through the Key'n Go kiosk
- Names its subsidiaries by country in the legal text
- Advertises discounts up to 50 EUR and up to 15% off the Crazy rate
- Runs its site in many languages and currencies
Where Goldcar is a step down from Hertz
- Mediterranean-heavy coverage, partly through franchisees
- No business programme on the pages we read
- No deposit or excess figures published
Standout against Hertz. Goldcar is the only tool here that hands over keys at an airport kiosk without a counter visit.
Best for: Travellers wanting a zero-excess rate in Spain, Portugal, Italy or Greece.
Centauro Rent a Car is maintained by Centauro Rent a Car S.L.U. in Finestrat, Alicante, with a CIF and a Registro Mercantil de Alicante entry. Its Centauro Premium rate is described on the homepage as all-inclusive, flexible, without excess and with free cancellation. The list of included items sits on the rate page, which we did not read.
Next to Hertz, Centauro is narrower: Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece, with new openings named in Lisbon, Florence, Milan and Rome. It also sells subscriptions and vehicle purchase and has a Business offer. The weekly offer of up to 25% and the Madrid return for 1 EUR are examples from the homepage, not a tariff.
What Centauro Rent a Car does better than Hertz
- Describes a rate without excess and with free cancellation
- Combines rental, subscription and purchase in one site
- Names a Spanish register entry in the Aviso legal
- Advertises a Madrid return for 1 EUR
Where Centauro Rent a Car is a step down from Hertz
- Southern Europe only
- No tariff, deposit or hosting detail on the pages we read
- Legal text in Spanish
Standout against Hertz. Centauro Rent a Car is the only tool here that offers vehicle purchase alongside rental and subscription.
Best for: Customers wanting rental, transfers and leasing from one group.
OK Mobility is the brand of Othman Ktiri Group S.L. in Palma, with a NIF and entries in the Palma trade register. The homepage lists rental from 1 to 89 days, a transfer service with a driver, flexible leasing from 2 to 9 months, leasing from 24 to 72 months and pre-owned cars. Delivery, a Premium Cover option and a Club OK scheme are also mentioned.
Against Hertz, the leasing and transfer products fill a gap, since the Hertz pages we read describe none of them. The conditions of use apply Spanish regulations, while the privacy notice lists a different data controller per country, such as OK Mobility Deutschland GmbH. No public tariff was visible, and Hertz has more stations.
What OK Mobility does better than Hertz
- Offers leasing from 2 months up to 72 months
- Adds driver transfers to the rental offer
- Applies Spanish law in its conditions of use
- Lists group companies by country in the privacy notice
Where OK Mobility is a step down from Hertz
- Smaller network than Hertz
- No public price list on the pages we read
- The contracting entity changes per country
Standout against Hertz. OK Mobility is the only tool here that covers short rental, driver transfers and leasing of up to 72 months in one group.
Best for: Renters who want an electric-friendly brand in many countries and accept franchise terms.
Green Motion is owned and operated by Green Motion Limited, company number 08449994, with a registered office in Woburn. Each country runs under a franchise awarded by that company or its subsidiaries, and the legal text says so openly. The menus name an electric vehicle section, four bundles (Basic, Plus+, Premium, Premium+) and Drive Green Rewards tiers called Green, VIP and Elite.
Compared with Hertz, the network is smaller and the contract may be with a local franchisee, not with Green Motion Limited. Menu locations include Turkey, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Business accounts exist, as does a Car & Camp product. The pages we read show no prices, so no cost comparison is possible.
What Green Motion does better than Hertz
- Publishes a UK company number and Companies House reference
- Gives electric vehicles their own section in the menu
- Names four bundles so you can see the cover levels
- Offers a camper product next to cars
Where Green Motion is a step down from Hertz
- Franchise structure means local terms differ
- No prices on the pages we read
- UK entity is outside the EEA
Standout against Hertz. Green Motion is the only tool here with a camper product, Car & Camp, next to its electric vehicle range.
Best for: German-speaking travellers who want insurance bundled into the booking.
Sunny Cars is a booking intermediary run by Sunny Cars GmbH in Munich, with two named managing directors and an entry at the Amtsgericht Munich; a Dutch office in Haarlem has KvK 30127954. The Rundum-Sorglos-Paket lists fully comprehensive cover, country-standard liability, additional liability of 10 million euro, theft protection, towing costs and refunds for lost keys or papers.
Unlike Hertz, Sunny Cars owns no stations, so the car and the deposit conditions come from a supplier. Reservation changes are possible up to 24 hours before the start. The site is mainly in German with an English version, no tariff showed on the pages we read, and the destination list spans Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
What Sunny Cars does better than Hertz
- Lists the included cover item by item
- Allows reservation changes up to 24 hours before start
- Names its managing directors in the imprint
- Sells through travel agencies as well as online
Where Sunny Cars is a step down from Hertz
- Owns no vehicles or stations
- Site is German-first
- No tariff on the pages we read
Standout against Hertz. Sunny Cars is the only tool here that states an additional liability of 10 million euro inside the booking package.
Best for: German-speaking users who want a price comparison with phone support.
Billiger Mietwagen is the portal billiger-mietwagen.de, run by FLOYT Mobility GmbH in Cologne with HRB 102448 and a VAT number in the imprint. You enter a pick-up place and dates, the portal compares offers, and a voucher is issued for the booking. The phone line is open from 08:00 to 20:00 every day.
Against Hertz, the portal has no stations and the contract at the counter is with the provider. The site states over 150 providers and free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up. It also claims over 2 million customers and a TrustScore of 4.3; these are its own figures that we did not verify. Pages are in German only.
What Billiger Mietwagen does better than Hertz
- Compares over 150 providers, by its own count
- Offers daily phone advice from 08:00 to 20:00
- Allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up
- Is free to use as a comparison
Where Billiger Mietwagen is a step down from Hertz
- No stations of its own
- German-language pages only
- Ownership of FLOYT Mobility GmbH not shown in the imprint
Standout against Hertz. Billiger Mietwagen is the only tool here that puts a staffed phone line, open every day, in front of a comparison search.
Best for: Renters in France, including movers who need a van.
ADA is run by ADA SA, a societe anonyme in Clichy registered at RCS Nanterre under 338657141. The menu lists passenger cars, utility vehicles, trucks, electric and premium vehicles, licence-free cars and two-wheelers. A page called Demenager avec ADA targets people who are moving house, and agencies are listed in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Nice and Toulouse.
Next to Hertz, ADA is France-focused and shows no foreign stations. Named offers cover young drivers, half-days and a per-kilometre formula, but their terms were not in our extract. The site is French only and the pages we read contain no prices, so the offers cannot be priced against Hertz.
What ADA does better than Hertz
- Rents scooters and licence-free cars as well as cars and vans
- Names an offer for young drivers
- Offers a half-day formula
- Has a page aimed at moving house
Where ADA is a step down from Hertz
- France only on the pages we read
- French-language pages
- No prices in our extract
Standout against Hertz. ADA is the only tool here that rents licence-free cars and scooters next to vans and trucks.
What actually breaks when you switch
The first break is the account. Hertz bookings, driver profiles and loyalty status do not transfer, so each new provider needs its own profile, licence check and payment method. Brokers such as Discover Cars, Sunny Cars and billiger-mietwagen.de add a second step, because the supplier at the counter will ask for the same documents again and may hold the deposit.
The second break is the cover and the deposit. Read the excess, the fuel rule and the age limits of the new provider before you rely on a rate you have seen, because the pages we read for most of these tools show no tariff. Arnold Clark lists 25 as the default age and Sixt's form defaulted to 30. Corporate customers should expect to renegotiate rate agreements from scratch.
Is Hertz a European company if I rent in Europe?
The website terms on hertz.com are issued by The Hertz Corporation, with an address in Oklahoma City, so the company behind the site is American. Hertz also states that independent licensees operate under its name, which means a European station may be run by a local business. Read the rental agreement to see which entity signs it.
Among the alternatives, the German, French and Spanish brands name their own entities and register numbers, for example Sixt GmbH & Co. Autovermietung KG, Europcar International SASU and Goldcar Spain S.L.U. They also use franchisees abroad, so the same check applies to them.
Can I get the same all-inclusive feeling that a rental with extras gives me at Hertz?
Several European tools sell the cover inside the rate. Centauro describes its Premium rate as all-inclusive with no excess and free cancellation, Sunny Cars lists fully comprehensive cover and an additional liability of 10 million euro, and Arnold Clark lists insurance, VAT and breakdown recovery in its price.
We read no Hertz price or excess figures, so we cannot say which is cheaper. Ask each provider for the deposit and the excess in writing, because a broker such as Discover Cars leaves those with the supplier.
Which one to pick
For a general replacement of Hertz in Europe, start with Sixt and Europcar. Sixt names a German register entry and adds a subscription, while Europcar names a French register entry and also rents vans and trucks. For Mediterranean holidays compare Goldcar and Centauro, and ask both for deposit and excess in writing.
For a single trip abroad where the cover matters more than the brand, Sunny Cars or billiger-mietwagen.de are the better fit for German speakers, and Discover Cars for anyone who wants a euro search in many languages. Choose Mobility for regular short trips in Switzerland, Arnold Clark Rental for Britain, ADA for France, OK Mobility for leasing and Green Motion for an electric focus.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the trip. Sixt and Europcar are the closest in shape, with their own stations, vans and loyalty schemes. Goldcar and Centauro suit Mediterranean airport rentals, Sunny Cars and billiger-mietwagen.de suit German-speaking travellers who want cover or phone advice, Mobility suits Swiss residents, and Arnold Clark Rental suits UK hires. Each has gaps, listed in the cards below.
Both put a European company on their legal pages: Sixt GmbH & Co. Autovermietung KG in Pullach and Europcar International SASU in Paris. Sixt also runs a separate US entity, Sixt Rent a Car, LLC, for US rentals. Europcar says local group members and franchisees handle some stations. Neither page we read states where customer data is hosted.
We cannot confirm that. Discover Cars shows per-day examples in euro, and billiger-mietwagen.de says it compares over 150 providers, but prices change by date and the sites publish no fixed tariff. A broker adds a second contract layer, so compare the total including deposit and cover before you book.
Only where the provider has stations on both sides. Sixt states 2000+ stations in 105 countries and Europcar states over 140 countries, both in their own words. Centauro covers Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece, ADA agencies are in France, and Arnold Clark is UK-only on the pages we read. Check one-way fees before booking.
Yes, the points stay with Hertz. A new account at Sixt ONE, Privilege, Club Goldcar or Drive Green Rewards starts at its entry tier. If points matter, finish your open rentals first and move to the new provider for the next trip.
