European Car Rental Platforms

Car rental platforms let you search, book and manage a hire car or van online, either with the rental company itself or through a comparison site that sells several brands. For travellers and companies in Europe, the contracting entity matters because it decides which consumer law, which data protection rules and which court apply to a booking. The tools below are run by companies in Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Sixt ranks first in this directory of European car rental platforms because Sixt GmbH & Co. Autovermietung KG, Pullach, combines its own stations, vans, a subscription and a rewards scheme under one German imprint.
  • Europcar International SASU in Paris publishes a register number and share capital of 110.000.000 EUR, yet Europcar says a station can be run by a franchisee, so the entity on the rental agreement may differ.
  • Discover Cars, Sunny Cars and Billiger Mietwagen are brokers, which means the vehicle and the deposit conditions come from a supplier and not from the site where you pay.
  • Mobility, a Swiss cooperative in Rotkreuz, prices short trips by the hour and kilometre in francs, while Arnold Clark Rental, Goldcar, Centauro, OK Mobility and ADA each serve a single country or region.
  • Eight of the twelve tools sit inside the EU, while Switzerland and the United Kingdom count as adequacy-decision countries outside the EEA, and none of the pages we read states where customer data is hosted.

European car rental platforms are the rental brands and booking sites through which a driver reserves a car or van from a company with its legal seat in Europe, which matters because the rental agreement, the deposit, the driver documents and the payment card all pass through that one company.

#1 Sixt

Pullach, Germany No price list on the pages we read; the German homepage states premium cars at economy prices and discounts of up to 20% through SIXT ONE. Demo on request

Best for: Travellers who want a single large rental brand with its own stations in many countries

  • Operating company. Sixt GmbH & Co. Autovermietung KG
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages we read
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Hertz

Sixt is the German rental brand run by Sixt GmbH & Co. Autovermietung KG in Pullach, and it is the broadest single offer in this directory. One account covers car rental, van rental, the SIXT+ subscription, a chauffeur and airport transfer service, and the SIXT ONE rewards scheme, which the German homepage ties to discounts of up to 20%.

The imprint gives the Amtsgericht Muenchen register number HRA 81 061 and names Sixt Verwaltungs-GmbH, seated in Vienna, as general partner. Sixt says it has 2000+ stations in 105 countries, which is its own figure. US rentals fall under a separate entity, Sixt Rent a Car, LLC, and the booking form we read defaulted to drivers aged 30.

What Sixt does well

  • German imprint with commercial register number
  • Cars, vans, subscription and transfer under one account
  • Stations stated in 105 countries
  • SIXT ONE rewards programme
  • Business offer next to consumer rental

Where Sixt falls short

  • No prices published on the pages we read
  • Separate US entity for US rentals
  • Default booking age of 30 in the form we read
  • Ownership not described in the imprint

Standout feature. Sixt is the only brand here that sells rental, a monthly car subscription and a chauffeur service in one account.

Europcar is the French network whose legal mentions name Europcar International SASU at 13 ter Boulevard Berthier in Paris, with RCS Paris 489 099 903 and share capital of 110.000.000 EUR. The homepage lists city cars, premium cars, electric, hybrid and plug-in models, vans and trucks, and an iOS app.

The privacy policy calls Europcar International the parent of Europcar Mobility Group and says a station can be operated by a group member, a subsidiary or a franchisee. The Privilege scheme carries a permanent 10% discount on the homepage, and country-specific terms are published. We read the en-us site only.

What Europcar does well

  • French legal mentions with RCS and VAT number
  • Cars, vans and trucks
  • Electric, hybrid and plug-in models listed
  • Privilege loyalty scheme

#3 Mobility

Rotkreuz, Switzerland Custom (quote-based) Demo on request

Best for: Swiss residents who want short, station-based trips priced by the hour and kilometre

  • Jurisdiction. Switzerland (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Source code. Closed source

Mobility is a Swiss car sharing cooperative based at Suurstoffi 16 in Rotkreuz, and it is the odd one out in this directory: a car is booked and opened through the app and paid by the hour and kilometre, not by the day. The home page says fuel, insurance and service are included and counts 3,500 vehicles at 1,800 locations, which are the cooperative's own figures.

The sporadic plan has CHF 39.90 activation, a journey access fee of CHF 2.50 to 5.00 and fares from CHF 3.00 per hour and CHF 0.65 per km. The regular plan costs CHF 9.90 per month after three free months and waives the monthly fee under 28. Members pay CHF 250.00 once for fares from CHF 2.00 per hour. Switzerland sits outside the EEA, and the imprint admits a Google Analytics transfer to the USA.

What Mobility does well

  • Three plans with fares stated in francs
  • Fuel, insurance and service in the fare, per the home page
  • Own count of 3,500 cars at 1,800 locations
  • Run as a cooperative, with a member plan
  • Plan without monthly fee for drivers under 28

Where Mobility falls short

  • Only Switzerland on the pages we read
  • Sporadic plan charges a fee per journey
  • Imprint sends Google Analytics data to a US server
  • Member plan starts with CHF 250.00

Standout feature. Mobility is the only cooperative in this category, and its members hold a share of the operator itself.

#4 Discover Cars

Best for: Travellers who want to compare many suppliers on one screen

  • Where the data sits. Not stated; affiliates in the UAE and Latvia may process data for operations
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Hertz

Discover Cars is a comparison and booking site whose terms name Travel Drive GmbH as a Swiss-based corporation, with affiliates Car Rental Technologies FZCO in the UAE and Discover Car Hire AS in Latvia. It rents no cars of its own: you search suppliers, pay through the site and collect from the supplier's counter.

The homepage shows euro per-day examples, such as Los Angeles Airport from EUR 48, deal pages per US state and country, and free cancellation offers. The terms say the deposit is not covered by the booking agreement. The full Swiss registration number is cut off in our extract, and the site calls itself the most-visited comparison site, a statement we did not test.

What Discover Cars does well

  • Swiss-based provider named in the terms
  • Many suppliers in one search
  • Prices in many currencies
  • Free cancellation offers on the homepage
  • Many languages

Where Discover Cars falls short

  • Not a rental company itself
  • Deposit handled outside the Booking Agreement

How do I choose between a rental brand and a comparison site in Europe?

A rental brand such as Sixt, Europcar, Goldcar or ADA is the contract partner at the counter. A comparison site such as Discover Cars, Billiger Mietwagen or Sunny Cars sells you a booking for a car that belongs to a supplier. Choose the brand when you want one party responsible for the car, the cover and the deposit.

Choose a broker when the search itself is the job. Billiger Mietwagen says it compares over 150 providers, and Discover Cars searches many suppliers in several currencies. The price of that breadth is a second contract layer: Discover Cars states that the security deposit is arranged between the customer and the rental company.

What does a European car rental price actually include?

None of the twelve tools publishes a full tariff on the pages we read, so the useful comparison is what each says sits inside the rate. Arnold Clark Rental states that its rates include VAT, insurance and breakdown recovery. Centauro describes its Premium rate as all-inclusive and without excess. Sunny Cars lists fully comprehensive cover and an additional liability of 10 million euro.

Goldcar works the other way round: the homepage promises that you pay only for what you need, which keeps the base price low and leaves the extras to you. Ask for the excess, the deposit and the fuel rule in writing before you compare headline prices.

Is a rental company in Switzerland or the United Kingdom still a European provider?

Both are European countries, but neither is in the EEA. Mobility and Discover Cars sit in Switzerland, which the EU treats with an adequacy decision, and Arnold Clark Rental and Green Motion sit in the United Kingdom under the same kind of decision. Personal data can flow to them without extra safeguards, but EU data protection law is not their home law.

The tools inside the EU are Sixt, Europcar, Goldcar, Centauro, OK Mobility, Sunny Cars, Billiger Mietwagen and ADA. None of them states a hosting location for customer data on the pages we read, so the entity named in the imprint is the fact you can rely on.

How do I move from Hertz to a European rental company?

Start by finding out what you use. The Hertz website terms name The Hertz Corporation in Oklahoma City and describe rental of vehicles, construction equipment and industrial equipment. A traveller who only rents cars will find Sixt and Europcar closest in shape, because both run their own stations, vans and a loyalty scheme.

Your Hertz status does not move. Sixt ONE, Privilege, Club Goldcar and Drive Green Rewards all start you at the bottom tier. A business customer should ask each provider for a corporate account, since Sixt, Centauro, OK Mobility and Green Motion all list a business offer, while the pages we read for Goldcar show none.

When should I stay with Hertz instead of switching?

Stay when the rental is in the United States, where the Hertz terms refer to many licensees and none of the tools here lists US stations of its own. Sixt operates a separate US entity, Sixt Rent a Car, LLC, which falls outside its German imprint. Stay also if you rent construction or industrial equipment, which no card in this directory covers.

Stay for a one-way rental across several continents unless you have checked the one-way fee elsewhere. Arnold Clark is UK-only on the pages we read, Centauro covers four southern European countries and ADA lists agencies in France.

How should a company with staff on the road compare these tools?

Look at account features first. Sixt lists a business offer next to consumer rental, Europcar offers vans and trucks, Green Motion has corporate accounts with a Flex product, and OK Mobility sells leasing from 2 to 9 months and from 24 to 72 months. Those cover different parts of a fleet budget.

For a team in one Swiss region, Mobility offers a cooperative plan and a regular-use plan at CHF 9.90 per month, with fuel, insurance and service included according to the home page. Check the contract entity per country, because Europcar, Goldcar, Green Motion and OK Mobility all use local group companies or franchisees.

How we selected and ranked these 12 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the trip. For a broad brand with its own stations, Sixt and Europcar rank first and second in this directory. For Mediterranean airports, Goldcar and Centauro are the closest fits. For comparing many suppliers, Discover Cars and Billiger Mietwagen are listed, and Mobility suits regular short trips in Switzerland.

Arnold Clark Rental states that its rates include VAT, insurance and breakdown recovery. Centauro describes a Premium rate without excess, Sunny Cars lists a long cover package, and Mobility says fuel, insurance and service are included in its fares. Read each contract for the excess and the deposit.

No. Both are brokers. Discover Cars sells bookings from suppliers under an agreement with Travel Drive GmbH, and Billiger Mietwagen is a comparison portal run by FLOYT Mobility GmbH in Cologne. The car, the counter and the deposit belong to the supplier you end up booking.
