Detailed Review
COMSOL Multiphysics is a simulation platform in which geometry, physics setup, meshing, solving and post-processing happen in one interface. Add-on modules for structural mechanics and other fields plug into the same environment, so adding a physics does not change the user interface.
COMSOL AB is registered in Stockholm (company number 556404-8675) and was founded there in 1986 by Svante Littmarck and Farhad Saeidi. The group now has subsidiaries around the world and more than 700 employees, according to its company page.
Model Builder and Apps
The Model Builder covers geometry, material properties, physics, computation and evaluation. The Application Builder turns a finished model into an app with its own user interface for colleagues who are not simulation specialists, and COMSOL Server hosts such apps.
The Model Manager adds version control and organised storage for models, which matters in regulated development.
Licence Types
Commercial licences come as CPU-locked, named single-user, floating network, and COMSOL Server types. Every type can be perpetual or term: a perpetual licence includes updates and support for 12 months and can be renewed for 20% of the then-current price, while a term licence has a 12-month minimum.
Named-user licences allow installation on up to four computers, and floating licences can be used by multiple users within the same country or territory.
Modular Product Suite
Capabilities are sold as modules on top of the platform, covering structural mechanics and other disciplines. This allows a team to license only the physics it needs.
The trade-off is that the total cost depends on which modules are combined, and COMSOL does not publish prices.
Limitations to Consider
COMSOL publishes no list prices, and a realistic setup combines the base product with several paid modules. It is installed software, so no browser-based option was found on the pages checked. The breadth of options means a longer learning curve than a task-focused tool, and licences are tied to a country or territory in the floating case. For cloud-first teams, SimScale is the lighter route.
Who Should Use COMSOL
Research groups, universities and product-development teams that model coupled phenomena and want a European vendor with a long track record.
Pros and Cons

- App builder shares models with non-specialists
- Perpetual or term licence on every type
- Swedish company with published registry number
- Model version control included
Cons
- No public prices
- Costs rise with each added module
- Desktop installation
- Broad tool, steeper learning curve
