European Structural Engineering Software Tools

Structural engineering software models buildings, bridges and other structures, calculates forces and deformations, and checks members against design codes such as Eurocode. The European structural engineering software tools below are sold by companies in Germany, Belgium, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the United Kingdom, so contracts, support and Eurocode national annexes sit with a European vendor.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Dlubal ranks first in this category because RFEM 6, RSTAB 9 and the RWIND 3 wind simulation sit in one German family-owned product line with a 90-day full trial.
  • BuildSoft Diamonds, Frilo and IDEA StatiCa are the three tools here that print prices in euros on their own pages, from €144 a month, €244 a month and €1,750 a year respectively.
  • IDEA StatiCa and Frilo are specialists, one for steel connections and one for single components, so neither replaces a whole-structure model such as RFEM 6, FEM-Design or SOFiSTiK.
  • LUSAS, MasterSeries and Oasys GSA come from the United Kingdom, which sits outside the EEA but under an EU adequacy decision, and Oasys GSA does not name its contracting entity on the pages we read.
  • MasterSeries is the only tool here whose privacy policy says data is held on servers owned and operated by the vendor, while most other vendors on the list do not state where their data lives.

European structural engineering software is the analysis and design software that engineers use to model buildings, bridges and industrial structures and to check members against design codes, made by vendors established in Europe, which matters because the contract, the supervisory authority and the support desk then sit under European law instead of a US head office.

Which European program can replace STAAD.Pro for a complete building model?

Ten programs on this list model a whole structure: Dlubal, SCIA Engineer, FEM-Design, BuildSoft Diamonds, SOFiSTiK, AxisVM, LUSAS, MasterSeries, InfoCAD and Oasys GSA, with mb WorkSuite adding MicroFe finite elements to its calculation modules. They differ more in what they emphasise than in whether they can run a frame. Dlubal puts plates, walls, shells and solids in RFEM 6 and frames in RSTAB 9. FEM-Design covers concrete, steel, timber, composite, masonry and foundations in one model.

Choose by project type before you choose by brand. SOFiSTiK and LUSAS lean on bridges and infrastructure, InfoCAD on prestressing and silos, AxisVM on seismic checks, and MasterSeries on British Standard office work. A practice that does mostly mid-rise concrete and steel to Eurocode will find FEM-Design, SCIA Engineer or BuildSoft Diamonds closer to daily work than a bridge suite.

What do European structural programs cost?

Only a minority print a price. BuildSoft lists Diamonds 2D Starter from €144 a month, 3D Plus from €463 and 3D Full from €685, all excluding VAT. Frilo lists Professional with 26 solutions and Ultimate with 58 from €244 a month. IDEA StatiCa lists €1,750 to €4,990 for an annual subscription and €3,490 to €9,990 for a perpetual licence. Over twelve months the 2D Starter plan adds up to €1,728 and 3D Full to €8,220.

The rest ask for a quote: LUSAS through a request form, MasterSeries with a note that PowerPad costs under a third of the full suite, and Dlubal, SCIA Engineer, FEM-Design, SOFiSTiK, AxisVM, InfoCAD, Oasys GSA and mb WorkSuite without figures on the pages we read. Request offers from two or three vendors for the same user count before comparing against the €3,238 that STAAD.Pro lists for a 12-month subscription.

Does choosing a European vendor mean the data stays in Europe?

For desktop engineering software the question is narrower than for a cloud service. Dlubal describes desktop software on your own hardware, and the analysis model on your disk goes nowhere unless you send it. What leaves the machine is licence checks, support tickets, web shops and, in some products, cloud features.

The pages show where those extras go. SCIA Engineer's webshop runs through Digital River GmbH and its privacy policy names US tracking tools. BuildSoft names Freshdesk and Google Analytics, AxisVM names Google Analytics, and InfoCAD's AI assistant uses Chatbase Inc. under standard contractual clauses. MasterSeries says it stores data on servers it owns and operates, and AxisVM names a Budapest hosting provider for its website.

Three vendors sit in the United Kingdom, where an adequacy decision applies but EU law does not. Read the contract entity of each vendor, and note that Dlubal runs a US subsidiary and Oasys lists offices in India and Canada.

How hard is it to move from STAAD.Pro to a European tool?

Plan for a rebuild. We could not confirm that any vendor on this list opens STAAD.Pro files, so the exchange route runs through neutral formats and BIM links. FEM-Design lists IFC, SAF, Revit, Archicad, Tekla and Allplan interfaces, SOFiSTiK offers analysis inside Revit, and Oasys GSA connects to Revit, Grasshopper and LS-DYNA.

Use the trials to rebuild one finished project in two candidates and compare member forces. Dlubal gives 90 days, SCIA Engineer, BuildSoft Diamonds and InfoCAD 30 days, IDEA StatiCa and MasterSeries 14. Keep STAAD.Pro running until your reports from the new tool have survived one client review.

When is it better not to switch away from STAAD.Pro?

Stay when your projects are checked to US or Asian design codes. FEM-Design is built around Eurocode, AxisVM names Eurocode, NTC and SIA, and MasterSeries names British Standards and Eurocodes. BuildSoft Diamonds states AISC and ACI support, which is the exception, though it lists fewer analysis types than STAAD.Pro.

Stay as well when clients hand you models in the Bentley ecosystem and expect them back in it, or when a project is half finished. A tool change in the middle of a design phase costs more in checking time than a subscription saves. Switching fits best at the start of a new project type, or around a renewal date.

Which tool fits connections, single members or bridges?

IDEA StatiCa checks steel connections and concrete members and offers a free Viewer so a fabricator can open the result without a licence. Frilo works the other way: each of its 26 or 58 solutions handles one element, such as a continuous beam, a column or a foundation, with separate Geotechnics editions for soil mechanics.

For bridges, FEM-Design has a module for road, railway and pedestrian bridges, SOFiSTiK names the Leverkusen Bridge among its references, LUSAS sells a bridge edition with rail track options, and InfoCAD lists prestressing and bridge construction as work areas.

How we selected and ranked these 13 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the job. Dlubal is first in our order for breadth, with RFEM 6, RSTAB 9 and a 90-day trial. SCIA Engineer fits offices that work to many national standards, FEM-Design suits Eurocode work with BIM links, and BuildSoft Diamonds fits those who want a monthly euro price. SOFiSTiK and LUSAS suit bridge work.

BuildSoft Diamonds lists monthly prices from €144, Frilo lists editions from €244 a month, and IDEA StatiCa lists annual plans from €1,750 and perpetual licences from €3,490. LUSAS and others quote on request, and several vendors show no figure on the pages we read.

Yes, in this directory. LUSAS, MasterSeries and Oasys GSA are British companies, and the United Kingdom is outside the EEA but covered by an EU adequacy decision for personal data. Their contracts follow UK law rather than EU law, which matters for some public tenders.

Most do. Dlubal offers 90 days, SCIA Engineer, BuildSoft Diamonds and InfoCAD 30, IDEA StatiCa and MasterSeries 14. FEM-Design, SOFiSTiK, AxisVM, Frilo and mb WorkSuite state a trial or demo, and several offer student or educational licences.

Most vendors publish English pages. InfoCAD and mb WorkSuite are German first, with mb WorkSuite showing German only on the pages we read. SCIA lists 13 languages and AxisVM 16 for its software.

Often. IDEA StatiCa and Frilo are built to sit beside a model-based program, and FEM-Design lists an IDEA StatiCa interface. Many offices pair a frame or finite element tool such as RFEM 6 or SCIA Engineer with a connection checker.
