European LIMS Software

A laboratory information management system tracks samples, test methods, results and reports, and in accredited labs it is the system an auditor inspects. These European vendors cover contract testing, pharma, food, water, materials and research labs, and each is registered in the EU, the UK or Switzerland. Several publish how they host data, which matters when the records describe patients, products or customers.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • LDB LIMS of Berlin and Vienna is the only tool in this comparison with a public price list: €99 per user per month, with hosting billed separately.
  • INTEGRIS iLIMS of Dresden can run entirely on the customer's own IT, which suits labs whose clients forbid external hosting.
  • MAQSIMA LAB+ publishes cloud availability each quarter, reporting 99.995 per cent network availability for Q2 2026.
  • SENAITE is released under GPL-2.0, so a lab pays no licence fee but arranges implementation and validation itself or through a service provider.
  • Achiever LIMS and openBIS come from the United Kingdom and Switzerland, so labs that require EU-only suppliers should treat them as European but not EU-based.

European LIMS software is laboratory information management software, covering sample intake, test assignment, results, approval and reporting, supplied by a company in Europe so that the contract, the support team and the stored test data fall under European law instead of the home jurisdiction of a US vendor such as LabWare.

Best for: Manufacturers whose own lab must clear production batches without delay

  • Operating company. Germanedge Solutions GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the website
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. LabWare LIMS, Thermo SampleManager

Germanedge QDA LIMS takes order data from ERP and MES production planning and calculates the sequence of test orders, so the time between sampling and release stays short. Measurement equipment is read automatically, a cost view shows the expense per job and per lab, and the workflow triggers predefined escalation steps when time or content limits are missed.

Germanedge Solutions GmbH is registered in Leipzig (Amtsgericht Leipzig, HRB 28318) with Stefanie Grimm and Dr. Jörg Kastrup as general managers. LIMS sits beside MES, CAQ and scheduling software in its portfolio. The vendor says a go-live is possible within a few days under SaaS operation and quotes up to 75 per cent shorter turnaround without a method. No price or hosting location is listed.

What Germanedge QDA LIMS does well

#9 SENAITE

Not applicable, Spain Software free; implementation and support from paid service providers Demo on request

Best for: Testing labs that have IT staff or a local integrator and want to avoid licence fees

  • Operating company. SENAITE community (core maintainers RIDING BYTES, Germany, and NARALABS, Spain)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Spain)
  • Where the data sits. Wherever you install it
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. LabWare LIMS, LabVantage

SENAITE is a LIMS built on the Plone CMS and released under GPL-2.0. A sample moves through defined states, from due and received to verified and published, and verification requires a second person other than the analyst. Technicians work from worksheets, instrument results arrive in them, and reports go to the client when the sample is published.

There is no single vendor contract. The Professional Services page names RIDING BYTES in Germany and NARALABS in Spain as core maintainers, and YME as a certified partner for links to clinical systems through HL7, FHIR and IHE. A lab hosts the software itself or pays a partner to do so, which also puts GDPR duties, backups and validation for GxP or ISO 17025 on the lab or its integrator.

What SENAITE does well

  • No licence fee under GPL-2.0
  • Full control of the source code
  • A second person must verify results
  • Maintainers are companies in Germany and Spain
  • HL7 and FHIR links via a partner

Where SENAITE falls short

  • Support contract must be bought separately
  • Validation is the lab's own work
  • Plone upgrades need technical skills
  • Fewer functions than commercial suites

Standout feature. SENAITE is the only tool here whose source code a lab can run, audit and change itself without paying a licence.

#10 openBIS

Zurich, Switzerland Pricing not published; see openBIS site for services Demo on request

Best for: Research groups and institutes that want notebook, inventory and FAIR datasets in one system

  • Operating company. ETH Zurich, Scientific IT Services (SIS)
  • Jurisdiction. Switzerland (adequacy decision, outside the EEA)
  • Where the data sits. Wherever you install it
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Spreadsheet sample lists, parts of LabWare ELN and LIMS

openBIS is a research data platform from the Scientific IT Services (SIS) of ETH Zurich. Experiments are described in the lab notebook and linked to the materials, samples and protocols in the inventory, so a result traces back to the exact material used. Data of any size is stored through the web interface or API, and a git-like tool called BigDataLink links large datasets across locations.

The support desk runs from an ethz.ch address, and users include Empa, which reports using it as its ELN/LIMS since 2020, and the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. Audit trails, rights management, Excel import and export, plugins and Jupyter integration are listed. Switzerland is outside the EU, pricing is not published and the software licence could not be verified.

What openBIS does well

  • Notebook, inventory and data in one platform
  • Operated by a university IT service
  • Audit trail and central rights management
  • API, plugins and Jupyter notebooks
  • Deployed at Empa and BAM

Where openBIS falls short

  • Built for research, not for routine testing
  • No quoting or invoicing for clients
  • You run it yourself
  • Licence not confirmed in this review

Standout feature. openBIS ties a notebook entry to the exact inventory item and to FAIR datasets, which routine LIMS products rarely do.

How do I choose between a European LIMS for routine testing and one for research?

Start with what leaves the lab. A testing lab sends reports to clients, bills per job and answers to an accreditation body, so it needs quotes, invoicing and approval steps. INTEGRIS iLIMS bundles CRM, quotes and invoicing as modules, lisa.lims has a WebPortal and Report Manager, and NEO LIMS offers a customer portal for orders and results.

A research group asks different questions: which material was used in which experiment, and where is the dataset. openBIS joins a lab notebook to an inventory and stores data of any size, while Achiever LIMS traces a sample through pooling and transformation. Neither is aimed at billing a customer for a water analysis, so pick by the document that ends the process: a client report or a published dataset.

What does a European LIMS cost, and why do so many vendors hide the price?

Only one vendor in this list publishes a price. LDB LIMS charges €99 per user per month, €350 per month for Standard Cloud with 100 GB or €550 per month for Enterprise Cloud, and quotes implementation separately. The other commercial tools say pricing on request, which usually means the price depends on modules, users and the size of the implementation project.

The cheapest route on paper is SENAITE, because the software itself is free under GPL-2.0. The money then goes to an implementation partner, hosting and validation work. When you compare quotes, ask each vendor for the same three lines: licence, hosting and first-year implementation, and get the validation effort in writing for regulated work.

Where is my laboratory data stored, and does the vendor's home country matter?

LDB LIMS names its location: AWS Frankfurt across three availability zones, with daily backups to Amazon S3. The data stays in Germany, but Amazon is a US-headquartered company, which LDB's own page treats as a point to raise in procurement. INTEGRIS iLIMS and NEO LIMS let you keep everything on your own servers, and SENAITE sits wherever you install it.

For most other tools the website does not say where the cloud is hosted, so the question belongs in the demo. Jurisdiction also differs by vendor: Achiever LIMS is a company in England, covered by an adequacy decision but outside the EEA, and openBIS is run from ETH Zurich in Switzerland. The German, Italian and Spanish-linked tools fall under EU law.

How do I move from LabWare LIMS to a European system?

Treat it as a re-implementation, not a file transfer. LabWare LIMS is sold with ELN and mobile modules, so list which of those you actually use before you shortlist anything. Every commercial tool on this page is listed as a replacement for LabWare LIMS, but most are configured per lab, so the work is rebuilding methods, specifications and reports in the new system.

Plan the data in three layers: master data such as methods and limits, open samples, and the historical results you must keep for audits. Many labs keep the old system read-only for the retention period instead of migrating every old result. LDB LIMS lists an ISO 17025 package at €4,000 and a GxP package at €36,000, which gives a feel for how much of a rollout is project work rather than licence.

When should a laboratory not switch to a European LIMS?

Do not switch in the middle of an accreditation cycle or a validated GxP campaign unless the audit calendar allows for it. A new system means new validation, and for GxP work that is a project of its own. A lab that depends on LabWare modules with no counterpart in the tools here, such as a mobile module in daily use, should compare scope before it commits.

Also pause if the main driver is price alone. The European tools mostly sell implementation-led projects, so the first year can cost as much as the old licence. Switching makes sense when contract jurisdiction, data location or the ability to reach a vendor in your own time zone and language is a requirement that the current supplier cannot meet.

How do European LIMS products connect to instruments and ERP systems?

Instrument connection is described by several vendors. Germanedge QDA LIMS reads measurement equipment automatically, from event bus to RS232, MAQSIMA LAB+ lists standard interfaces to common ERP systems and lab instruments, and Achiever LIMS offers a bi-directional API for instruments, analytics tools and electronic lab notebooks. SENAITE imports instrument results into worksheets.

ERP links often cost extra. LDB LIMS says interfaces to an ERP are priced on request, and Germanedge QDA LIMS draws its planning data from ERP and MES production orders, which is its main reason to exist. Ask each vendor for the list of instruments in your lab and a reference customer who uses the same one.

How we selected and ranked these 10 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the lab. LDB LIMS suits accredited and GxP labs that want a stated price, INTEGRIS iLIMS and NEO LIMS suit labs that need on-premise operation, Germanedge QDA LIMS suits manufacturers releasing production batches, SENAITE suits labs with IT staff that want no licence fee, and openBIS suits research institutes.

SENAITE is released under GPL-2.0 and maintained by RIDING BYTES in Germany and NARALABS in Spain. It covers samples, worksheets, instruments and reports. openBIS from ETH Zurich is a research data platform; its licence could not be verified from the project pages, so check it before adopting.

INTEGRIS iLIMS runs in the cloud or on the customer's own IT, NEO LIMS offers cloud, SaaS or on-premise, and SENAITE is installed on a server you control. openBIS publishes administrator documentation for self-run installations. LDB LIMS is SaaS only, with no on-premise option.

MAQSIMA publishes availability for its cloud deployments every quarter. For Q2 2026 it reports 99.995 per cent network availability and 100 per cent server availability. LDB LIMS offers a contractual SLA with its Enterprise Cloud option at €550 per month.

Achiever LIMS from Interactive Software in Solihull is a UK company, covered by an adequacy decision but outside the EEA. openBIS is run by ETH Zurich in Switzerland, with the same adequacy status. Both are European geographically; neither is an EU supplier, which matters if your policy says EU only.

Eusoft.Lab from EUSOFT S.r.l. in Bari is the Italian option, delivered as SaaS and naming ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189 and 21 CFR Part 11. Its website is published in Italian and English, and it lists no price or data centre location, so ask both in the demo.
