Why people leave Google Chrome

The standard complaint about Chrome is that it belongs to an advertising company. True, and too abstract to act on. The concrete version is that in the space of eighteen months Chrome removed the extension platform that ad blockers were built on and kept the third-party cookies it had promised to retire.

Both are documented by Google. The Manifest V2 timeline on Chrome's developer site records the disabling starting in Stable on 9 October 2024, everyone defaulted to off on 31 March 2025, and Chrome 138 on 24 July 2025 removing the ability to switch them back on at all; the remaining Manifest V2 extensions were pulled from the Web Store on 31 August 2026.

Separately, on 22 April 2025 Google announced it would not roll out the standalone cookie prompt and would keep third-party cookie choice as it was.

Put those together and the reason to change browsers becomes specific rather than ideological. The software that decides what runs on every page you open is made by a company whose revenue depends on those pages, and it has recently exercised that authority in both directions.

The specific reason Vivaldi answers this page is timing. In September 2022, while Manifest V3 was still an argument rather than a deadline, Vivaldi wrote that its ad and tracker blocking was built on internal Chromium APIs precisely so that the deprecations would not take it away, and said it would look at removing whatever restrictions Google added.

Chrome then spent three years disabling the old extension format, ending with no way to re-enable it from version 138. The blocker that shipped inside the browser was not affected, because there was no permission to withdraw.

What actually breaks when you switch

The extension audit is the real work. Anything still on Manifest V2 is gone from the Web Store as of 31 August 2026, so a workflow built on one needs replacing regardless of which browser you land in. Do that list before migrating, or you will blame the new browser for something the old one removed.

Sync is the second snag, and it is about expectations rather than difficulty. Passwords and bookmarks move over, but the Google account that quietly tied your browser to your phone, your mail and your search history does not, and for the first week that absence feels like a missing feature rather than the intended outcome.

The third is managed devices. On a work laptop the browser, its extensions and often the search engine are set by policy, and no amount of personal preference overrides that. Make the change on the machines you control, and take the Manifest V2 timeline to IT for the ones you do not, since it is an argument about capability rather than taste.

Did Chrome actually break ad blockers, or is that overstated?

It is usually overstated in one direction and understated in the other. Blocking still exists in Chrome: extensions written for Manifest V3 use a declarative rules API, and the popular blockers shipped versions that work. Most users did not wake up to adverts everywhere.

What changed is who holds the controls. The old API let an extension inspect and decide about each request; the new one requires rules registered in advance within limits the browser sets. Chrome's timeline shows the transition was not optional: disabled in Stable from 9 October 2024, off by default for everyone on 31 March 2025, and unrecoverable from Chrome 138.

So the honest version is that the capability was reduced rather than removed, by the company whose revenue the capability affects. That is the part worth reacting to.

Is Chrome getting rid of third-party cookies?

No, and this is the most common outdated belief about the browser. On 22 April 2025 Google said it had decided to maintain its current approach and would not roll out the new standalone prompt, keeping third-party cookie choice in Chrome as it stands.

Cookies remain manageable through Chrome's privacy and security settings, which is where they were before. Google said it would keep strengthening Incognito protections and named IP Protection as a separate piece of work.

If your plan for the next two years assumed those cookies would disappear on their own, that plan needs revising, and a browser that blocks trackers by default answers the question now rather than eventually.

Does switching to Vivaldi escape Google's browser engine?

No, and saying otherwise would be the easiest error on this page. Vivaldi is built on Chromium, which is developed principally by Google, so the rendering engine is the same one and the monoculture argument is untouched.

What changes is who ships the product and what it does by default. Blocking is built into Vivaldi rather than delegated to an extension, and Vivaldi wrote publicly in September 2022 that it had deliberately built its blocker on internal Chromium APIs so that the Manifest V3 deprecations would not take it away.

If the engine monoculture is genuinely your objection, this page does not solve it and the honest answer is a Gecko-based browser, which is not a European product and therefore not in this directory.

The one thing to check first is any Manifest V2 extension you were still nursing along. The Web Store removed the last of them on 31 August 2026, so if something in your workflow depended on one, it needs replacing whichever browser you use.

If you want the blocking you had before Chrome changed the rules, and you want it not to depend on a permission that can be narrowed again, Vivaldi is the answer on this page and the change costs you a Sunday afternoon at most.
