Detailed Review
Viaplay is the largest Nordic streaming operator, producing original drama in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish and holding significant live sport rights — football, motorsport, ice hockey and more — across northern Europe.
That combination is deliberate: sport drives subscriptions and originals retain them, which is a viable strategy for a regional player that cannot outspend the global platforms on content volume.
Nordic Originals
Viaplay has produced a substantial body of Nordic drama, drawing on the region's well-established strength in crime and social realism. For viewers outside the Nordics, it is one of the more reliable sources of Scandinavian television that has not already been picked up globally.
Its catalogue also includes Nordic film and licensed international content, though the latter varies considerably by market.
Live Sport
Football, motorsport and ice hockey rights vary by country but are substantial in the Nordic markets. For many subscribers, sport is the reason to hold the subscription, with the drama catalogue as the retention mechanism between seasons.
Where It Operates
The service is strongest in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland, with presence in the Netherlands and the Baltics. After a period of international expansion and subsequent retrenchment, the company has refocused on its core Nordic markets.
Limitations to Consider
Viaplay went through significant financial difficulty and restructuring after over-expanding internationally, withdrawing from several markets — worth knowing when assessing its stability. Content and sport rights vary substantially by country, so what is available in Sweden may not be in the Netherlands. Outside the Nordics its catalogue is much thinner.
Who Should Use Viaplay
Viewers in the Nordic markets who want local drama and live sport in one subscription, and Nordic drama enthusiasts elsewhere in northern Europe where the service operates.
