Detailed Review
Smallpdf handles the operations most people actually open Acrobat for — compress, convert, merge, split, sign, OCR — in a clean interface, from Zurich. Files are processed on Swiss infrastructure and deleted automatically within the hour.
That retention promise is the substantive difference from a free American PDF site. Swiss data protection law plus an ISO 27001 certification means it is a contractual commitment rather than a reassuring sentence on a landing page.
The Toolset
Twenty-one tools covering conversion to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images, compression that is genuinely effective, merging and splitting, page reordering, watermarking, protection and unlocking, OCR for scanned documents and electronic signatures.
The e-sign tool covers simple electronic signatures suitable for routine agreements. For qualified signatures under eIDAS you still need a dedicated provider such as Skribble or Yousign.
Privacy Position
Swiss hosting, TLS in transit, encryption at rest and automatic deletion within an hour of processing. For documents that are confidential but not classified — contracts, invoices, HR paperwork — that is a reasonable position, and considerably better than uploading to an ad-supported free converter.
For genuinely sensitive material, an offline tool such as PDF24's desktop app or Sejda's desktop app removes the upload entirely.
Apps and Integration
Desktop applications for Windows and macOS, mobile apps, and integration with Google Drive and Dropbox mean the tools are available where the documents already are, rather than requiring a download-upload-download cycle.
Limitations to Consider
The free tier is limited to a couple of operations per day, which is enough to try but not to work with. Text editing inside a PDF is more limited than Sejda's or a full editor's. And as a cloud service, files are uploaded — an acceptable trade for most documents but not for all, and there is no self-hosted option.
Who Should Use Smallpdf
Professionals and small businesses doing regular PDF work who want a fast, well-designed tool with a credible privacy position and Swiss hosting, rather than the cheapest available converter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Files are deleted automatically within an hour of processing. Combined with Swiss hosting and ISO 27001 certification, that is a contractual commitment rather than a marketing claim.
For occasional use. It limits you to a couple of operations per day, which is enough to evaluate the service but not to work with regularly.
To a limited extent. For real text editing that reflows content, Sejda or OnlyOffice handle it better.
For confidential business documents, the Swiss hosting and hourly deletion make it a reasonable choice. For genuinely sensitive material, use an offline tool such as PDF24 desktop or Sejda's desktop app so nothing is uploaded at all.
Smallpdf is built as a European alternative to Adobe Acrobat: Swiss PDF workspace with 21 tools, hosted in Switzerland and deleting your files within the hour. It will not be a like-for-like feature match in every respect, so check the review above for where the two genuinely differ before switching.
