Detailed Review
rotki is built by Rotki Solutions GmbH in Berlin and has been open source since 2018. The app runs on your computer and keeps the history in a database encrypted with SQLCipher.
It connects to 190+ exchanges, blockchains and DeFi protocols with read-only keys and decodes on-chain history into profit and loss reports.
Local-first design
Cloud crypto tax tools ask you to upload your history to their servers. rotki works the other way: the application runs locally, and the optional premium sync is encrypted with your password before upload.
Auditable code
The full source is published on GitHub under AGPL-3.0, so the way your data is handled can be inspected instead of taken on trust.
Plans by history size
The free Starter plan allows 1K historical events. Paid plans raise the limit to 3K, 30K and 100K events and add device sync and extra analytics.
Limitations to Consider
The pages checked describe profit and loss reports, not country-specific filing forms, so you may need to translate the result into your own return or work with an accountant. Free users see net worth history for only the last 2 weeks, and paid tiers are billed monthly. Compare with Blockpit or Divly if you want a finished country report.
Who Should Use rotki
Technically comfortable users who want their financial history to stay on their own machine and accept doing more of the tax work themselves.
