Detailed Review
Qodana takes the code inspections that JetBrains IDEs run while you type and runs them in your pipeline, so the pull request is judged by the same rules as the editor. JetBrains documents support for 60+ languages including Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, PHP, Kotlin, Python, Go, C#, C/C++ and Ruby.
The contracting entity is JetBrains s.r.o. in Prague, which the JetBrains privacy notice names as data controller. The same notice states the default location of customer personal data is the EU.
How it runs
Qodana runs either as a Docker container (Docker 25.0.5 or later, or Podman) or in native mode on Windows, macOS and Ubuntu or Fedora. The linters are distributed as separate images per language family, for example one for Java, Kotlin, Groovy, JavaScript and TypeScript.
The analysis report can be uploaded to Qodana Cloud, where team members see the results and track progress across projects.
Licensing model
The Community license is free but restricts functionality. Ultimate and Ultimate Plus licenses depend on the number of active contributors rather than lines of code, so a large codebase does not raise the price by itself.
Where it fits
Qodana is a quality and code health tool first. Its strength is consistency with the JetBrains IDE, which makes it a natural gate for teams that already standardise on IntelliJ-based editors.
Limitations to Consider
Qodana is built around JetBrains inspections, so teams not using JetBrains IDEs get less of the consistency benefit. Detailed prices were not visible on the pricing page without client-side rendering, so check the cost per contributor before committing. For safety-certified analysis look at Axivion instead, and for architecture rules see Sonargraph.
Who Should Use Qodana
Development teams on JetBrains tooling that want an EU-based vendor and a quality gate in CI with the same rules as the IDE.
