Proxmox VE became the default answer to "what replaces vSphere" for a straightforward reason: it bundles as standard what VMware licenses separately. Clustering, high availability, software-defined storage through Ceph, and backup are all in the base product, and the base product is free.

What You Get Without Paying
The free version has no feature restrictions. Clustering across nodes, live migration, high availability, Ceph hyperconverged storage, snapshots, replication and the full REST API are all available. There is no equivalent to NSX for advanced network virtualisation, and the ecosystem of third-party integrations, while growing quickly, remains smaller than VMware's.
