OpenStack is the most capable open-source private cloud platform and also the most demanding to operate. Canonical's proposition addresses the second half of that sentence: a curated distribution, a simplified deployment path through Sunbeam, and the option to have Canonical run the cloud for you under a managed contract.

When OpenStack Is Actually the Right Answer
