Elestio occupies a useful middle ground. Fully managed services mean a vendor owns your infrastructure; self-hosting means you own the operational burden. Elestio deploys open-source software into infrastructure you own — your Hetzner, Scaleway, AWS or DigitalOcean account, or dedicated European hardware — and then operates it for you.

The catalogue is unusually broad: PostgreSQL, Redis, Grafana, n8n, Keycloak, Metabase, Minio and several hundred more, each with updates, backups, monitoring and TLS handled.

Managed, But You Keep the Infrastructure

Deploying into your own cloud account means the servers, the storage and the data are on your bill and under your control. If you stop paying Elestio, the software keeps running — you lose the management layer, not the system. That is a materially different lock-in profile from a conventional managed service.

For European organisations, it also means the infrastructure can be a European provider while the management vendor is a Romanian company, keeping the whole chain in the EU.

The Catalogue

The breadth is the point. A team can stand up an internal stack — a database, an object store, an identity provider, a dashboard tool and a workflow engine — from one interface without operating five different pieces of software. Each gets automated updates, backup schedules and monitoring.

For small teams that want the capability of a platform engineering group without the headcount, this is a pragmatic substitute.

Cost Structure

You pay Elestio a management fee per service on top of the underlying infrastructure cost. On cheap European hardware that total is often well below equivalent hyperscaler managed services, particularly for services like Kafka or Elasticsearch where cloud pricing is punishing.

Limitations to Consider

Elestio is a young and small company, which is a real consideration when it is operating production infrastructure. The management layer is proprietary, so while your data and servers are portable, the automation is not. And the sheer breadth of the catalogue means depth of expertise varies by service — it is stronger on common infrastructure than on niche applications.
