Full review
Camunda is aimed at developers who draw processes in BPMN, rules in DMN and then run them in an engine. The imprint gives Camunda Services GmbH, Zossener Straße 55-58, 10961 Berlin, with a court entry at Amtsgericht Charlottenburg, HRB 113230 B.
According to the about page, Jakob Freund and Bernd Ruecker started the company in 2008. Our reading of the site dates from 4 November 2026.
Berlin entity behind the engine
The website is run by Camunda Services GmbH. The same Berlin company appears as operator of bpmn.io, the home of open modeling toolkits.
Buyers therefore contract with a German GmbH, not with a US parent as with Appian.
Self-Managed, SaaS and the license line
Self-Managed needs no license while you develop on your own machine. Running it in production on your own servers calls for an Enterprise license.
Camunda SaaS is hosted by the vendor, comes with a 30-day trial and is bought via sales. The pricing page lists no amounts, whereas Appian meters per user, per month and per app.
Building blocks versus a low-code studio
The component list reads: Desktop Modeler, Web Modeler, process engine, Operate, Tasklist, Identity and Optimize. Camunda also pitches orchestration across AI agents, people and systems.
Appian bundles low-code, data fabric, RPA and document extraction. We found no comparable drag-and-drop interface designer in the Camunda pages.
Points against
Budgeting for production or SaaS needs a sales call. The region where Camunda SaaS runs is missing from the pages we read, and business users without developers will struggle because the material describes modelers and engines, not an interface builder.

Common questions
Camunda Services GmbH, Berlin, entered at Amtsgericht Charlottenburg as HRB 113230 B.
Yes. Self-Managed needs no license for development on your own machine, and Camunda SaaS starts with a 30-day trial. Production on your own infrastructure needs an Enterprise license.
It can for engineering teams. Camunda is German; Appian is run by Appian Corporation, a Delaware company in Tysons, Virginia, and leans on low-code.
