European Personal Tax Filing App Tools

A personal tax filing app guides you through your income tax return and sends it to the tax office. The European Personal Tax Filing Apps below work with national systems such as ELSTER in Germany, Swiss cantonal portals and UK Self Assessment, and the operators are companies registered in Germany, Switzerland and the UK.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • eTax from Ringler Informatik AG states CHF 0.- per year for Swiss taxpayers and keeps return data at Everyware AG in Switzerland.
  • WISO Steuer from Buhl Data Service GmbH offers a EUR 0.00 trial, a EUR 39.99 yearly plan and a EUR 49.99 single purchase for German returns.
  • SteuerFuchs lists the lowest stated filing fee in the category, EUR 19.95 through ELSTER.
  • Taxando and Taxfix are the two German apps that put an independent adviser behind a self-service return.
  • Taxfix UK and Simpletax are services where an accountant or staff member prepares the return, not software you operate yourself.

A personal tax filing app is software or a service that collects a private person's income and deductions, checks them and sends the income tax return to the tax office, and a European provider matters because the operator, the hosting and the contract sit under German, Swiss or British law instead of a US one.

How do I choose a personal tax filing app in Europe?

Start with the country where you are tax resident, because every tool in this category files for one national system. WISO Steuer, Steuerbot, smartsteuer, Taxando, SteuerFuchs, Taxfix, wundertax, SteuerGo and Lohnsteuer kompakt handle German returns, eTax and Simpletax handle Swiss cantonal returns, and Taxfix UK handles UK Self Assessment.

Then decide how much of the work you want to hand over. A self-service app such as smartsteuer or SteuerFuchs asks you to answer the questions, while Taxfix UK and Simpletax prepare the return from your documents. Taxfix and Taxando sit between the two with an optional adviser.

What do personal tax filing apps cost in Europe?

Published prices in this category range from CHF 0.- to GBP 99. eTax states CHF 0.- per year for taxpayers, SteuerFuchs charges EUR 19.95 to file, and Steuerbot, smartsteuer and the Taxando Standard package start at EUR 39.99. WISO Steuer lists EUR 39.99 for a yearly plan and EUR 49.99 for a single purchase.

Several vendors tie the fee to the refund or hide it. Taxando Premium costs 19% of the refund with a minimum of EUR 99, and the Taxfix terms say the Expert fee depends on the refund. For Taxfix, wundertax, SteuerGo, Lohnsteuer kompakt and Simpletax no price appeared on the pages we read.

Are European personal tax filing apps GDPR compliant and where is the data stored?

German tools fall under the GDPR directly, and eTax and Simpletax operate in Switzerland, which has an EU adequacy decision. Storage statements differ. eTax names Everyware AG in Switzerland, smartsteuer names SysEleven GmbH, and WISO Steuer says its servers stand at the company site in Germany.

Steuerbot, SteuerFuchs, Taxfix and Taxfix UK do not state a data location on the pages we read. Read the privacy policy too: Taxando lists Google and Meta tracking services, and SteuerGo lists several US-based tools for web delivery, so German hosting does not cover every component.

How do I switch from TurboTax to a European tax app?

TurboTax files US returns, so a European app only replaces it if you are tax resident in Germany, Switzerland or the UK. None of the tools in this category files a US federal return, and none imports a TurboTax export. You re-enter income and deductions from payslips and receipts.

Prepare the local login first. German apps send the return through ELSTER, Swiss tools work with the cantonal portal, and Taxfix UK files Self Assessment. Keep your earlier US returns in a safe place, because the new tool will not hold them.

Should I use an adviser-backed tool or a self-service app?

Choose an adviser when your case has rental income, a foreign element or self-employment. Taxfix offers an Expert plan with independent advisers, Taxando Premium adds an adviser at a success fee, and Taxfix UK has a UK accountant file the return. Simpletax staff fill in Swiss returns but do not represent you before the tax office.

Stay with self-service for a plain employee return. Steuerbot, SteuerFuchs and WISO Steuer list no expert-prepared tier, which keeps the fee low and puts the checking in your hands. Their built-in checks reduce errors, though they do not replace advice.

Can I try a tax filing app before paying?

Yes, most apps let you work through the return first. WISO Steuer has a EUR 0.00 trial with all functions, Steuerbot calculates the refund free, SteuerGo and Lohnsteuer kompakt offer an anonymous test, and SteuerFuchs offers anonymous advice before its EUR 19.95 filing fee.

smartsteuer and wundertax also start free and charge at submission. Taxfix UK and Simpletax sell a service, so there is no trial to click through; you pay for the preparation.

How we selected and ranked these 12 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.
