European Alternatives to ABBYY FineReader, Google Document AI, Amazon Textract and Adobe Acrobat - OCR Software (2026) | European Purpose

European OCR Software Alternatives

OCR software reads text and fields out of scans, PDFs and photos, and that means the vendor sees every invoice, contract and ID card you feed it.

This list is limited to OCR and document-capture tools offered by a legal entity established in Europe, with the registered company named from its own imprint, terms or privacy policy.

It covers a French language-model OCR API, French and Dutch invoice and ID extraction, German document AI with on-premises hosting, Swiss and Norwegian document AI, a German free OCR API, and an Austrian cooperative for handwriting. Each one is a European alternative to ABBYY, Google Document AI, Amazon Textract or Adobe Acrobat OCR, and each entry says plainly what it costs and where the contracting company sits.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect the order in which tools appear; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Mistral AI (Mistral OCR) ranks #1 among the European OCR tools in this directory, because it is a Paris company whose OCR API reads PDFs and images into ordered text with tables, equations and structured output, and it offers self-hosting to sensitive organisations.
  • Eight of the ten are established in EU member states: three in France (Mistral AI, Koncile, Mindee), three in Germany (Konfuzio, Hypatos, OCR.space), one in the Netherlands (Doxis) and one in Austria (Transkribus). Cradl AI is in Norway (EEA) and Parashift is in Switzerland.
  • The exception is stated rather than hidden: Mindee contracts with Mindee SAS in Paris only for clients registered in the Eurozone, and with Mindee Inc., a Delaware corporation, for all other clients.
  • Only five publish usable prices: Cradl AI ($40 and $240 a month), Koncile (€199 a month), Mindee ($44 a month), OCR.space ($30 and $60 a month) and Transkribus (€99 and €449 a year). Hypatos prices per transaction from €0.20, and Konfuzio publishes pilot ranges from €5,000.
  • Konfuzio and OCR.space are the two that state a self-hosted route: Konfuzio on-premises with no data outflow, OCR.space as locally installable on-premise software.
  • Most vendors do not state a hosting country. Only Konfuzio (Germany or on-premises) and Cradl AI (EU/EEA, with Amazon Web Services named) say where processing happens, and the rest are marked as unstated.

European OCR software is optical character recognition and document data extraction offered by a company established in Europe, so that the vendor that reads your scans, invoices and ID documents sits under European law rather than American.

The category runs from plain OCR APIs to document AI platforms for banks and insurers and specialist engines such as handwriting recognition. This directory lists ten, from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Norway and Switzerland, and states for each who the contracting company is, what it charges and where its data goes.

#1 Mistral AI (Mistral OCR)

15 rue des Halles, Paris, France OCR is priced per 1,000 pages according to the pricing page; no OCR figure is shown on that page

Best for: Developers who need text from complex PDFs for AI pipelines

  • Operating company. Mistral AI, French limited joint-stock corporation, Paris register no. 952 418 325 (commercial terms allow an affiliate named on the Order Form to be the contracting party)
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France)
  • Where the data sits. France (company); hosting region for the OCR API is not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Google Document AI, Amazon Textract, ABBYY

Mistral OCR is an optical character recognition API from the Paris company behind the Mistral language models. It takes images and PDFs as input and returns ordered text interleaved with images. Mistral says it understands tables, mathematical expressions and advanced layouts such as LaTeX, is natively multilingual and can return structured output when prompted. It is aimed at feeding documents into retrieval and analysis pipelines rather than at invoice capture.

The company is Mistral AI, a French limited joint-stock corporation incorporated in Paris under number 952 418 325, registered at 15 rue des Halles. The commercial terms say products are provided by Mistral AI or an affiliate specified in an Order Form, which is worth checking in a contract. The launch post says self-hosting is selectively available for organisations with highly sensitive or classified information.

It is ranked first because it is the most capable general document reader here and the legal entity is clear, but it is a model API: validation, review screens and accounting hand-offs are yours to build. The pricing page says OCR is priced per 1,000 pages and shows no figure.

What Mistral AI (Mistral OCR) does well

  • Paris company with the registration number in its own terms
  • Handles tables, equations and complex layouts
  • Structured output from prompts
  • Selective self-hosting for sensitive organisations
  • Priced per 1,000 pages rather than by seat

Where Mistral AI (Mistral OCR) falls short

  • A model API, not a finished invoice-capture product
  • No OCR price figure on the pricing page
  • Terms allow an affiliate as contracting party
  • Hosting region for the OCR API not stated

Standout feature. It is the only option here that treats a document as a prompt, returning structured data from layouts other OCR tools flatten.

#2 Doxis AI.dp (formerly Klippa)

Laan Corpus den Hoorn 1, Groningen, Netherlands Custom pricing on request; pay-per-document or annual licence models Free trial with credits

Best for: Teams that want invoice, ID and receipt extraction with fraud checks

  • Operating company. Doxis AI Solutions B.V., KVK 74785834
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Netherlands)
  • Where the data sits. EU-based servers per the vendor; no country named on the pages checked
  • Independent checks. ISO 27001, ISAE 3000 Type I
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. ABBYY, Google Document AI, Amazon Textract

Doxis AI.dp is the platform formerly sold as Klippa DocHorizon. The vendor lists support for 100+ document types, including invoices, receipts, passports, ID cards and bank statements, 150+ languages and 20+ file formats, with output in JSON, CSV, XML, XLSX and UBL. It can be used as an OCR API, a mobile SDK or a no-code platform, and includes fraud detection and human-in-the-loop review.

The contracting company is Doxis AI Solutions B.V., which the terms place at Laan Corpus den Hoorn 1 in Groningen, with KVK number 74785834. The site states ISO 27001 and ISAE 3000 Type I, EU-based servers and that no data is stored by default. Klippa was acquired in 2025 by the Bonn-based group now also branded Doxis, per press coverage; both are European.

Pricing is on request, with pay-per-document or annual licence models and a free trial with credits. It ranks second because of its breadth of document types and certifications, but a buyer has to talk to sales to learn the cost.

What Doxis AI.dp (formerly Klippa) does well

  • Dutch company with KVK number on its own site
  • 100+ document types and 150+ languages
  • ISO 27001 and ISAE 3000 Type I stated
  • Fraud detection and human-in-the-loop review
  • API, mobile SDK and no-code platform

Where Doxis AI.dp (formerly Klippa) falls short

  • No published prices
  • Brand is mid-rename from Klippa, so older names remain in use
  • Country of the EU servers not named
  • Part of a larger group since 2025

Standout feature. It combines extraction for 100+ document types with built-in fraud checks, which most OCR APIs here do not offer.

#3 Konfuzio

Asslar, Germany No public price list; free discovery phase, pilots from €5,000, enterprise implementations from €15,000 Free strategic discovery phase, then a paid pilot

Best for: German enterprises that need document AI inside their own infrastructure

  • Operating company. Helm & Nagel GmbH, HRB 7706 Amtsgericht Wetzlar
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Germany or Europe: hosted in Germany, on-premises, German cloud providers (Hetzner, Telekom) or hyperscalers (Azure, AWS, Google)
  • Independent checks. ISO 27001 (stated on the vendor site)
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. ABBYY, Kofax, Google Document AI

Konfuzio is document processing and workflow automation built around AI agents. The vendor describes it as going beyond OCR to handle extraction, validation, compliance checks and routing, across contracts, invoices and multi-document workflows in banking, insurance, healthcare and legal. It is aimed at enterprises, not at someone who wants to upload a PDF and get text.

Konfuzio is operated by Helm & Nagel GmbH, Rosenweg 5, 35614 Asslar, registered at the Wetzlar court under HRB 7706. The site says it is hosted in Germany or Europe and can run fully on-premises with no data outflow, or on German cloud providers Hetzner and Telekom or the major hyperscalers. It states ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance.

There is no price list. The vendor describes a free discovery phase, paid pilots from €5,000 and enterprise implementations from €15,000, then SaaS or on-premises licences by volume. It suits organisations that want the data kept in Germany, and it is a poor fit for small self-serve use.

What Konfuzio does well

  • German GmbH with commercial register number on its imprint
  • Full on-premises option with no data outflow
  • German hosting stated
  • ISO 27001 stated
  • Free discovery phase before any spend

Where Konfuzio falls short

  • No self-serve plan or public price list
  • Pilots start at €5,000
  • Enterprise-oriented, heavier than a simple OCR API
  • Research and ranking claims rest on the vendor's own statements

Standout feature. It is the one tool here that offers fully on-premises operation next to German hosting, for organisations that cannot send documents out.

#4 Parashift

Hauptstrasse 134, Sissach, Switzerland No prices on the pricing page; quote based Demo and trial account, playground

Best for: Swiss and regulated firms processing bank, insurance and health documents

  • Operating company. Parashift AG, UID CHE-101.770.667
  • Jurisdiction. Switzerland (non-EU, European)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. ABBYY, Kofax, Google Document AI

Parashift is a document AI vendor for regulated companies. It offers two routes: the Parashift platform as guardrail infrastructure for enterprise automation, and Dokumentli, its own vision-language model that it says reads business documents more precisely than generic frontier language models. Its solution pages cover banking dossiers and KYC, insurance claims and underwriting, and healthcare referrals and accounts payable.

The imprint names Parashift AG, Hauptstrasse 134, 4450 Sissach, Switzerland, with UID CHE-101.770.667. Switzerland is not in the EU or the EEA, so it counts here as European but not EU. The vendor also sells to software vendors under OEM licensing, for those who want to embed document AI in their own product.

The pricing page shows no figures, and a demo and trial account is offered instead. The hosting location was not stated on the pages checked.

What Parashift does well

  • Swiss company with UID on its imprint
  • Own vision-language model, Dokumentli
  • Solutions for banking, insurance and healthcare
  • OEM licensing for software vendors
  • Demo and trial account available

Where Parashift falls short

  • Switzerland is outside the EU and EEA
  • No prices published
  • Hosting location not stated
  • Enterprise-oriented, not self-serve

Standout feature. It is the only option here built around its own document-reading model for banks and insurers, with OEM licensing for software vendors.

#5 Koncile

5 Boulevard des Bouvets, Nanterre, France Free plan with 20 credits / Advanced €199 per month excl. tax, billed monthly, about €0.20 per page / Enterprise by quote Free plan with 20 credits to test extraction

Best for: Small teams that want a published monthly plan and fraud scoring

  • Operating company. Koncile SAS, RCS Nanterre 948 056 205
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France)
  • Where the data sits. France (company); data hosting region is not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Amazon Textract, Google Document AI, Nanonets

Koncile is an OCR extraction platform with an API, SDK and MCP access, ready extractors for invoices, bank statements, identity documents, contracts, bills of lading and prescriptions, and a document fraud service. The fraud service gives each document a score from 0 to 1 computed from more than 150 signals, and is available under an Enterprise contract.

The legal notice names Koncile SAS, a simplified joint-stock company with its registered office at 5 Boulevard des Bouvets, 92000 Nanterre, registered with RCS Nanterre under number 948 056 205. The terms are signed by that company, with no non-European affiliate named.

Pricing is published: a free plan with 20 credits, an Advanced plan at €199 per month excluding tax (about €0.20 per page) with API, SDK and MCP access and unlimited extractors, and Enterprise by quote. Overages are billed as used. Payment accepts bank cards and SEPA direct debit.

What Koncile does well

  • French SAS with the RCS number on its legal notice
  • Published €199 monthly plan
  • Free plan to test extraction
  • Fraud score with 150+ signals
  • Exports to SAP, Excel, n8n, Make and Power Automate

Where Koncile falls short

  • API access requires the €199 plan
  • Fraud detection only on Enterprise contracts
  • Hosting region not stated on the pages checked
  • Young company with fewer references than the larger vendors

Standout feature. It publishes a flat monthly price with an approximate per-page cost and unlimited extractors, which most enterprise-oriented tools here do not.

#6 Cradl AI

Bentsebrugata 31E, 0469 Oslo, Norway Free $0 (50 pages per month) / Builder $40 per month billed annually (500 pages) / Pro $240 per month billed annually (5,000 pages) / Enterprise custom Free plan, no credit card required

Best for: Automation teams building workflows in n8n, Zapier or Power Automate

  • Operating company. Lucidtech AS dba. Cradl AI, organisation no. 918 345 787 MVA
  • Jurisdiction. EEA (Norway)
  • Where the data sits. Primary hosting in the EU/EEA per the privacy policy; Amazon Web Services named for infrastructure and Google Analytics data on US servers, with standard contractual clauses
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Amazon Textract, Google Document AI, Nanonets

Cradl AI describes itself as the document AI layer for automation workflows. It builds purpose-built agents that turn complex multi-page documents into structured data with line-level extraction, table extraction, splitting and classification, built-in guardrails and human review for exceptions. It integrates with n8n, Power Automate, Zapier and webhooks.

The contracting company is Lucidtech AS, trading as Cradl AI, with organisation number 918 345 787 MVA, at Bentsebrugata 31E, 0469 Oslo, Norway. Norway is in the EEA but not the EU. The privacy policy says primary hosting is in the EU/EEA, names Amazon Web Services for infrastructure, and says Google Analytics data goes to US servers, with standard contractual clauses for processing outside the EU/EEA.

Prices are published: Free at $0 for up to 50 pages a month, Builder at $40 a month billed annually for 500 pages, Pro at $240 a month billed annually for 5,000 pages, and Enterprise on request. Prices are in dollars.

What Cradl AI does well

  • Prices published for every self-serve tier
  • Free plan with 50 pages a month
  • Table and line-level extraction
  • Integrates with n8n, Power Automate and Zapier
  • Norwegian company with organisation number on its terms

Where Cradl AI falls short

  • Norway is EEA, not EU
  • Prices are in US dollars
  • Amazon Web Services named as infrastructure
  • Small page quotas on lower tiers

Standout feature. It has the clearest self-serve ladder here, from a free 50 pages to 5,000 pages for $240 a month, built for workflow tools.

#7 Mindee

14 rue Charles V, Paris, France Starter $44 per month billed annually ($529 per year), 6,000 credits per month / Pro adds live chat, unlimited seats and data processing localisation / Enterprise custom, 500,000+ credits per year 14-day free trial

Best for: Developers who want a self-serve API for invoices, receipts and IDs

  • Operating company. Mindee SAS for clients registered in the Eurozone; Mindee Inc. (Delaware) for all other clients, per the terms of service
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France) for Eurozone clients; Delaware entity for others
  • Where the data sits. Pro plan includes data processing localisation; regions are not listed on the pricing page
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Veryfi, Taggun, Amazon Textract

Mindee is an API-first document processing platform. Its site lists models for invoices, receipts, resumes, passports, ID cards, driving licences, bank statements and barcodes, plus utilities to crop, split and classify documents. One processed page uses one credit, and a page with a confidence score uses 1.5 credits.

The terms of service state that, unless an order says otherwise, clients registered in the Eurozone contract with Mindee SAS at 14 rue Charles V in Paris, and all other clients contract with Mindee Inc., a Delaware corporation in San Francisco. The French entity is governed by French law with Paris courts. That split is why Mindee sits below the vendors that have no US contracting party.

Pricing is published in US dollars: Starter at $44 a month billed annually ($529 a year) for 6,000 credits a month, Pro with live chat, unlimited seats and data processing localisation, and Enterprise from 500,000 credits a year. There is a 14-day free trial.

What Mindee does well

  • Published self-serve pricing
  • 14-day free trial
  • Models for invoices, receipts and identity documents
  • Data processing localisation on the Pro plan
  • French law governs the French entity's contracts

Where Mindee falls short

  • Non-Eurozone clients contract with a Delaware company
  • Prices are in US dollars
  • Credits expire at the end of each period
  • Overage billed at the unit rate plus 20%

Standout feature. It has a published credit-based plan from $44 a month, but the contracting entity depends on where the customer is registered.

#8 Hypatos

Am Neuen Markt 9 E-F, Potsdam, Germany (Berlin office) Per transaction completed: invoice processing from €0.25, order confirmations from €0.20, delivery notes from €0.20, order management from €0.20 (yearly workload up to 5M documents, volume discounts)

Best for: Finance teams that want to pay per processed invoice

  • Operating company. Hypatos GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)
  • Where the data sits. Not stated on the pages checked
  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. ABBYY, Kofax, Rossum

Hypatos sells AI agents for the transactional layer of global business services: invoice processing, order confirmations, delivery notes, sales order management and dunning letters. Customers can use pre-packaged workforces or build their own for other processes. It is an enterprise product for finance operations, not a developer OCR API.

The imprint names Hypatos GmbH, c/o Office Club, Am Neuen Markt 9 E-F, 14467 Potsdam, with a Berlin office, a German VAT ID and a commercial register entry. The site does not state a hosting location on the pages checked.

Pricing is outcome-based. The pricing page lists invoice processing from €0.25, order confirmations from €0.20, delivery notes from €0.20 and order management from €0.20 per transaction completed, for a yearly workload of up to 5 million documents, with volume discounts. It charges for work completed, not seats or licences.

What Hypatos does well

  • Published per-transaction prices
  • Pay per outcome, not per seat or token
  • German GmbH with imprint and VAT ID
  • Covers invoices, orders and delivery notes
  • Volume tiers stated

Where Hypatos falls short

  • Figures are "from" prices for a recommended full-scope workforce
  • Hosting location not stated
  • Enterprise-oriented, quote needed for detail
  • Not a plain OCR API for developers

Standout feature. It charges per completed document, from €0.20, so the price follows the work rather than seats or tokens.

#9 OCR.space

Zollhofgarten 2, Heidelberg, Germany Free: 25,000 requests per month / PRO $30 per month: 300,000 requests / PRO PDF $60 per month / Enterprise $999+ per month Free API key, no payment

  • Operating company. a9t9 software GmbH
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Germany)

It is a service of a9t9 software GmbH, with offices at Zollhofgarten 2 in Heidelberg and a postal address in Walldorf, Germany. Where OCR.space falls short

  • Free tier limited to 1 MB files and 3 PDF pages
  • Plain OCR, with no invoice or ID field models
  • Server location not stated

Standout feature. It is the only tool here with a free API at 25,000 requests a month and a stated delete-after-processing policy.

What Transkribus does well

  • Built for handwriting and historical scripts
  • 50 free credits every month
  • Cooperative owned, Austrian register number on its imprint
  • Published prices in euros
  • Credit top-ups with no subscription

Where Transkribus falls short

  • Not suited to invoice or ID extraction

Standout feature. It is the only tool here built for handwriting, run as a cooperative with 250+ co-owners, with a free tier of 50 credits a month.

What counts as OCR software, and what is document AI?

Classic OCR turns the pixels of a scan into text. Document AI goes further: it finds the fields that matter, such as invoice number, total and supplier, validates them and routes the result to another system. Most of the vendors here sit between the two, selling an API that returns structured data, with a review screen for the documents the model is unsure about.

The practical split is by buyer. OCR.space and Mistral OCR are for developers who want text from images and PDFs. Mindee, Koncile, Cradl AI and Doxis AI.dp sell extraction APIs with ready models for invoices, receipts and identity documents. Konfuzio, Parashift and Hypatos sell platforms to enterprises in finance, insurance and healthcare. Transkribus is a different job entirely: handwriting and historical documents.

Why does the location of an OCR vendor matter?

An OCR vendor sees the full content of every document you send, which is usually the most sensitive text a company holds: invoices, contracts, bank statements, passports. A vendor established in Europe is bound by European data protection law and answers to a European court. A vendor with a US parent can be pulled into US legal process whatever server the data sits on.

That is also why the contracting entity matters more than the brand. Mindee is a Paris company, but its terms send clients outside the Eurozone to a Delaware corporation. Mistral's commercial terms allow an affiliate named on the Order Form to be the contracting party. Read the order form, not only the imprint.

Location of the servers is a separate question and most vendors answer it only partly. Konfuzio names German hosting and on-premises. Cradl AI says its primary hosting is the EU/EEA and names Amazon Web Services. OCR.space says uploads are deleted after processing, which limits exposure whatever the server location.

How do the published prices compare?

Self-serve entry points are cheap. OCR.space is free for 25,000 requests a month and $30 for 300,000. Cradl AI starts at $40 a month for 500 pages. Mindee starts at $44 a month for 6,000 credits. Koncile lists €199 a month, which it puts at about €0.20 per page. Transkribus is €99 a year for 900 credits.

Enterprise tools do not publish a list price. Konfuzio gives ranges for pilots (from €5,000) and enterprise implementations (from €15,000). Hypatos charges per completed transaction, from €0.25 for an invoice. Parashift and Doxis ask for a quote or demo, and Mistral says OCR is priced per 1,000 pages without showing a figure on its pricing page.

Compare on the unit that matters to you: a page, a credit, a completed document or a request. They are not interchangeable, and a page that needs human review costs more in practice than one that does not.

Where do OCR migrations go wrong?

The first failure is testing on clean documents. Every vendor performs well on a tidy PDF invoice. Test on the worst scans you actually receive, in the languages you actually receive them.

The second is ignoring the exception queue. Accuracy claims are for fields the model is confident about. Doxis and Cradl AI both build in human review for the rest, and the cost of that review is the real cost of the system.

The third is treating a developer API as a finished product. Mistral OCR, OCR.space and Mindee return data; you still build validation, storage and the hand-off to accounting or case management.

How we selected and ranked these 10 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Three people touch every page: one writes it, a second edits it, and a third checks the compliance and pricing claims against the vendor's documentation. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

Mistral AI holds #1 among the European OCR tools in this directory, because it combines a Paris company with an OCR API that handles tables, equations and complex layouts and offers selective self-hosting. The right answer depends on the job: Mindee or Koncile for invoice and ID extraction through an API, Konfuzio for German enterprise hosting, OCR.space for a free OCR API, Transkribus for handwriting.

Yes. Mistral OCR, Doxis AI.dp, Mindee, Koncile and Cradl AI offer APIs, Konfuzio, Parashift and Hypatos target enterprises, and OCR.space is a simple OCR API. None publishes a like-for-like accuracy comparison against ABBYY, so test on your own documents.

OCR.space has a free API with 25,000 requests a month. Cradl AI has a free plan with 50 pages a month. Koncile has a free plan with 20 credits. Transkribus gives 50 free credits a month. Mindee has a 14-day free trial and Doxis offers a trial with free credits.

Konfuzio states that full functionality is available in your own data centre with no data outflow. OCR.space offers its PRO OCR API as locally installable on-premise software. Mistral says self-hosting is selectively available for organisations dealing with highly sensitive or classified information.

Eight are in EU member states. Cradl AI (Lucidtech AS) is in Oslo, Norway, which is in the EEA but not the EU. Parashift AG is in Sissach, Switzerland, which is in neither. Mindee contracts with a Delaware corporation for clients outside the Eurozone.

Hypatos prices per completed invoice from €0.25 and is built for finance shared-service teams. Mindee, Koncile and Doxis AI.dp sell invoice extraction through an API, and Konfuzio covers invoices as part of broader document workflows. Cradl AI extracts line-level data and tables.

Transkribus. It reads handwritten and printed text in more than 100 languages, has 500+ AI models and is run by a cooperative with 250+ co-owners. The others are aimed at printed business documents.

It varies and is worth reading. OCR.space says uploaded documents are deleted after processing, searchable PDFs are kept for 60 minutes and IP addresses are logged for a month. Doxis says no data is stored by default. Other vendors' retention terms were not stated on the pages checked.

Tesseract is an open-source OCR library with no vendor behind it, so there is no contracting entity to verify and it is not listed. It is a reasonable choice if you are willing to build and host your own pipeline.

Rossum's own about page announces its acquisition by Coupa, an American company, and the UK data-protection register names Rossum Ltd in London as controller. ABBYY's contracting entity was not verified on its own pages. Only vendors with a confirmed European contracting entity are listed.
