European Alternatives to MyFitnessPal, Lose It! and Cronometer - Nutrition Tracking Apps (2026) | European Purpose

European Nutrition Tracking Apps Alternatives

A food diary records what you weigh, what you eat and, over months, how you live, which makes it health data in the plain sense of the word.

These European alternatives to MyFitnessPal and Lose It! come from companies established in Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Portugal and the United Kingdom, and they split into three kinds of product: consumer calorie counters, fasting and coaching apps with a food log inside, and dietary-assessment and dietitian software built for practices and research.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect the order in which tools appear; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • Foodvisor ranks #1 among the European nutrition tracking apps in this directory, because Foodvisor is a French SAS registered in Paris and the only consumer app here whose privacy policy states that personal data is hosted exclusively on servers within the European Union.
  • myfood24 and Fitatu are the next two to state a location. myfood24 names AWS in Dublin and says it does not transfer data outside the EEA without written consent; Fitatu says data from its tools is processed on EEA servers as a rule, but runs its AI functions through Google Cloud.
  • Yazio, Lifesum and Fddb are the largest names and the least specific about hosting: Yazio's policy names a German host for its website only, Lifesum names no provider or country, and Fddb's hosting location could not be verified on its own pages.
  • Three of the twelve are British, not EU: myfood24, Carbs & Cals and Nutracheck. That is stated per tool, not hidden in a footnote.
  • Fastic and Mahlzait are German but depend on American infrastructure for the diary: Fastic names Google Cloud in Frankfurt plus Vercel, AWS, OpenAI and Anthropic, and Mahlzait names Firebase, Vercel, Microsoft Clarity and Meta tools with no region.
  • Nutrium is the odd one out: it is software for dietitians, priced by number of active clients from $15 to $39 a month, not a diary for one person.

European nutrition tracking software is the software you log meals, calories and nutrients in, built by a company established in Europe, so that a diary which shows your weight, your eating pattern and sometimes your health goals sits under European jurisdiction rather than American. It covers three products people ask for with the same words: consumer calorie counters, fasting and coaching apps with a food log inside, and dietary-assessment or dietitian software for practices and research.

Every European nutrition tracking app reviewed

#1 Foodvisor

Paris, France Free tier / Premium priced in local currency in the app Free tier with barcode scanning, manual entry, goal tracking, activity logging and a limited set of recipes; 14-day withdrawal period on purchases

Best for: People who want a photo-based calorie counter whose vendor commits to EU-only hosting

  • Operating company. FOODVISOR SAS, RCS Paris 812 516 847
  • Jurisdiction. EU (France), French law
  • Where the data sits. European Union, the privacy policy states that personal data is hosted exclusively on servers within the EU
  • Replaces. MyFitnessPal, Lose It!, Noom

Foodvisor is the only consumer calorie counter in this category whose privacy policy puts the hosting question beyond doubt. The policy states that personal data processed by Foodvisor services is exclusively hosted on servers located within the European Union, and adds that the company tries to use only technical tools whose servers are also in the EU. That is a sharper statement than any other consumer app here makes.

The company is FOODVISOR, a French simplified joint-stock company (SAS) registered with the Paris Trade and Companies Register under number 812 516 847, with its registered office at 40 bis rue Violet, 75015 Paris.

The terms are governed by French law, with a 14-day withdrawal period and the EU statutory conformity warranty. The free tier covers barcode scanning, manual food entry, goal tracking, activity logging and a limited set of recipes. Full recipes, daily nutrition courses, personalised coaching and macro customisation sit behind Premium, which the terms say is priced in the local currency shown in the app.

What Foodvisor does well

  • Privacy policy states hosting exclusively on servers in the EU
  • French SAS with a Paris register number and a stated registered office
  • Free tier includes barcode scanning and manual entry
  • Terms give a 14-day withdrawal period

Where Foodvisor falls short

  • Premium price is shown only inside the app, not on the vendor pages checked
  • No published certification such as ISO 27001
  • Coaching and macro customisation require Premium

Standout feature. It is the only consumer app in this category that says in its own privacy policy that the diary is hosted only in the European Union.

#2 myfood24

Leeds, United Kingdom Not published, quoted on request Demo access on request for Healthcare, Research, Teaching and Commercial use

Best for: Researchers, clinicians and teachers who need a dietary-assessment tool hosted in Ireland

  • Operating company. Dietary Assessment Ltd, England and Wales no. 10568730
  • Jurisdiction. United Kingdom (English law)
  • Where the data sits. AWS servers in Dublin, Ireland; the privacy policy says data is not transferred outside the EEA without prior written consent
  • Replaces. MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, ASA24

myfood24 is not a diary for personal use. It is a dietary-assessment platform that administrators such as researchers, healthcare professionals and teachers use to collect food records from participants or patients, with separate Healthcare, Research, Teaching and Commercial versions. Where an administrator runs a study, Dietary Assessment Ltd acts as a processor and the administrator is responsible for consent and project management.

The privacy policy names Amazon Web Services as server provider with servers in Dublin, Ireland, and says data is not transferred outside the EEA without prior written consent. The company is Dietary Assessment Ltd, registered in England under number 10568730, so it is a UK company with Irish hosting. The terms of use are governed by English law with the English courts. Pricing is not published and is quoted on request.

What myfood24 does well

  • Named AWS servers in Dublin, Ireland
  • Policy says no transfer outside the EEA without prior written consent
  • Healthcare, Research and Teaching versions of the same platform
  • Clear split of controller and processor roles for studies

Where myfood24 falls short

  • UK company, so outside the EU
  • No published price
  • Built for administrators, not for individuals logging their own meals

Standout feature. It is the only tool here designed for studies and clinics, with the controller and processor roles written into the privacy policy.

Best for: People who want a generous free plan from a Polish company that processes in the EEA

  • Operating company. Fitatu S.A., KRS 0000635344, NIP 7792444235
  • Jurisdiction. EU (Poland)
  • Where the data sits. The privacy policy says data from its tools is processed on servers within the EEA as a rule; US transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and AI functions use Google Cloud (Vertex AI / Gemini API)
  • Replaces. MyFitnessPal, Lose It!, FatSecret

Fitatu is a calorie counter from Poznań with a free plan that includes a product database, a barcode scanner, tracking of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates and 38 further vitamins and nutrients, a water tracker, an exercise database and weight and measurement tracking. Where Fitatu falls short

  • AI features run through Google Cloud

Best for: People who fast intermittently and want a food log in the same app, hosted in Frankfurt

  • Where the data sits. Google Firebase and Google Cloud in Frankfurt (europe-west1) for authentication, databases and functions, Cloudflare R2 with EU data residency for media; AWS, Vercel, OpenAI and Anthropic named as further processors
  • Replaces. Zero, MyFitnessPal, Noom

Fastic starts as a fasting tracker and adds a water, food and step tracker and an AI-powered food tracker. It is the only app in this list whose primary job is not calorie counting.

The privacy policy states that authentication, databases and functions run on Google Firebase and Google Cloud Platform in Frankfurt (europe-west1) and that media is stored on Cloudflare R2 with EU data residency. It then names American processors for other functions: Vercel for websites, Amazon Web Services for supplementary storage, Stripe, PayPal, RevenueCat, and OpenAI, Anthropic and others for AI. Transfers rely on standard contractual clauses with encryption as a supplementary measure. Prices are shown at purchase and include German VAT.

What Fastic does well

  • Primary database in Frankfurt, stated in the privacy policy
  • Media on Cloudflare R2 with EU data residency
  • German GmbH with a Berlin address and German governing law
  • Free version with the fasting tracker

Where Fastic falls short

  • Names OpenAI and Anthropic as AI providers, so meal data can leave Europe
  • Hosting is on Google Cloud, a US company, even in Frankfurt
  • Calorie counting is secondary to fasting
  • No price on the pages checked

Standout feature. It names both the Frankfurt region and the long list of American processors, which is more than most larger competitors say.

The company is Robot Studios IT Consultancy BV, Hemelshoek 277, 2590 Berlaar, Belgium, enterprise and VAT number 0732.991.584, under Belgian law with Belgian courts.

The privacy policy names Robot Studios as controller, states that data is stored with DigitalOcean in Amsterdam, and states that there are no ads, tracking pixels or data brokers. It also states that meal photos and context are sent to US-based AI providers (Google, OpenAI via OpenRouter and TypeSafe) for analysis, and that these providers do not train on the data. Deleted meals are kept 14 days and backups may hold data for up to 3 years.

What Snapkin does well

  • Belgian BV with an enterprise number, address and Belgian governing law
  • Storage location named: DigitalOcean, Amsterdam
  • No ads, tracking pixels or data brokers, per the privacy policy
  • Export and account deletion from inside the app

Where Snapkin falls short

  • Every meal photo is analysed by US AI providers
  • No free version, and the annual price is a launch price against a regular €99.99
  • Backups may keep data for up to 3 years
  • Estimates only: the terms say some numbers will be wrong

Standout feature. It is the only app in this list that names both its EU storage city and the specific US AI providers that see each photo.

Why does it matter where a food diary is stored?

A food diary is rarely only a food diary. Over a few months it records a body weight, a height, the days a person skipped meals, the day a diet started after a diagnosis, and sometimes a pattern that a clinician would call disordered eating. Data-protection authorities treat information that reveals something about health as a special category, and a nutrition app holds that information in plain structured form.

The question has three parts and the apps here answer them unevenly. Where the primary database sits, which companies get a copy for AI, analytics, support and payments, and how the data leaves again when the account is deleted. Foodvisor answers the first part most directly: its privacy policy says personal data is hosted exclusively within the EU. Fastic answers it with Frankfurt and an EU storage region, and then lists American processors for the rest.

The honest finding in this category is that most of the larger apps leave the first part unanswered. Lifesum's policy refers to processors for cloud-based hosting without naming one. Yazio names who hosts its website. Neither is a bad sign by itself, but neither is an answer to where the diary lives.

What changes when a calorie counter adds AI?

Photo recognition, voice logging and meal suggestions send something to a model, and the model is almost never run by the app company itself.

Yazio's privacy policy names OpenAI, with OpenAI Ireland Ltd as the contracting party and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses covering any transfer to US servers. Fitatu runs its AI functions through Google Cloud Vertex AI and the Gemini API. Snapkin names Google, OpenAI via OpenRouter and TypeSafe, all US-based. Fastic lists OpenAI and Anthropic among its AI providers. Mahlzait lists Google Vertex AI and the Gemini API.

This does not make those apps unusable, but it means a European company name on the imprint does not mean the photo of the plate stays in Europe. Foodvisor says its processors are, as far as it can manage, also located in the EU. Reading the AI paragraph in the privacy policy before enabling photo logging is the cheapest check there is.

Are you replacing a consumer app or buying for a practice?

Yazio, Lifesum, Fitatu, Fddb, Foodvisor, Mahlzait, Carbs & Cals and Nutracheck are built for one person logging their own meals. Fastic starts from fasting and adds a food log. Those are the replacements for MyFitnessPal and Lose It!.

Nutrium and myfood24 are a different job. Nutrium is dietitian software: a practitioner manages clients, builds meal plans and runs appointments, and the client uses a companion app. myfood24 is a dietary-assessment platform with Healthcare, Research and Teaching versions, where an administrator such as a researcher is responsible for consent and Dietary Assessment Ltd acts as processor. A person who wants a diary for themselves has no reason to look at either.

How large is the food database, and why does the country matter?

A calorie counter is only as good as the barcode it recognises. Fitatu's English site states the largest base of products and dishes from Great Britain, Nutracheck states over 350,000 UK foods with photos, and Fddb states 906,400 products and dishes on its German site. A database built in one country is thinner in the next one, which is why a Polish, German or British app can beat a global one at home and lose abroad.

None of these figures is audited, and each is the vendor's own number. The practical test is to scan ten items from your own cupboard during the free tier or trial and see how many come back with a plausible label.

What does free mean in this category?

Foodvisor, Fitatu, Fastic, Yazio, Fddb, Mahlzait, Lifesum and Carbs & Cals have a free tier. The limits sit in different places: Foodvisor reserves full recipes, courses, coaching and macro customisation for Premium, Fitatu reserves AI photo estimation and an ad-free experience, Fddb reserves the AI food scanner, and Mahlzait limits the AI trials while keeping the free tier ad-free.

Nutracheck, Nutrium and Snapkin give a trial rather than a free plan: 7, 14 and 3 days. Carbs & Cals gives 1 week on its monthly plan and 2 weeks on its annual plan.

Most prices are billed through Apple or Google, which is why several vendors do not publish a number on their own sites. The one published annual price in this list below €20 is Fddb at €19.99; Mahlzait is the next lowest at €29.99, and Snapkin's €49.99 is a launch price against a regular €99.99.

How we selected and ranked these 12 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Three people touch every page: one writes it, a second edits it, and a third checks the compliance and pricing claims against the vendor's documentation. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

Foodvisor holds #1 among the European nutrition tracking apps in this directory, because it is a French SAS and its privacy policy states that personal data is hosted exclusively on servers in the European Union.

The right answer depends on the job: Fitatu for a large free plan with EEA processing, Yazio for the widest set of meal plans, Fddb for a German food database that is free on the web, Nutrium or myfood24 if you are a dietitian or a researcher, and Carbs & Cals or Nutracheck for UK foods.

Foodvisor states the European Union. Snapkin states DigitalOcean in Amsterdam. myfood24 states AWS in Dublin, Ireland. Fastic states Google Cloud in Frankfurt and Cloudflare R2 with EU data residency. Fitatu says tool data is processed on EEA servers as a rule. Nutrium says its hosting companies are located mainly in Europe. Nutracheck names AWS without a region. Yazio, Lifesum, Fddb, Mahlzait and Carbs & Cals publish no location for the diary data.

Yes, several. Yazio, Lifesum, Fitatu and Fddb are calorie counters of similar shape, and Foodvisor adds photo recognition with EU-only hosting. None of them is a copy of MyFitnessPal: the size of the food database depends on the country the app was built in, and the integrations with fitness devices differ per app. The choice comes down to which country's food labels you scan most.

myfood24 (Dietary Assessment Ltd), Carbs & Cals (Chello Publishing Limited) and Nutracheck (NutraTech Ltd). All three are registered in England. The other nine are established in Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden or Portugal.

Foodvisor, Fitatu, Fastic, Yazio, Fddb, Mahlzait, Lifesum and Carbs & Cals have a free tier. Nutracheck gives a 7-day free trial, Nutrium a 14-day trial and Snapkin a 3-day trial with no free plan. myfood24 publishes no price and quotes on request.

Foodvisor and Snapkin recognise meals from photos, and Snapkin sends them to Google, OpenAI and other US providers. Fitatu offers AI photo calorie estimation in Premium+AI and uses Google Cloud Vertex AI and the Gemini API. Yazio uses OpenAI. Fastic names OpenAI and Anthropic. Mahlzait uses Google Vertex AI and the Gemini API. Each of these is a processor named in the vendor's privacy policy, outside the company that holds the imprint.

Nutrium, from HEALTHIUM S.A. in Braga, is dietitian software priced by the number of active clients: $15 a month on the yearly 10-client plan, $25 on the yearly unlimited plan, with monthly billing at $25 and $39. myfood24 is a dietary-assessment platform with Healthcare, Research, Teaching and Commercial versions, and is quoted on request.

Mahlzait. Its imprint names Ruslan Adilgereev as a sole proprietor (Einzelunternehmen) at an address in Berlin, with VAT not charged under the small-business rule in § 19 UStG. The rest are limited companies: GmbH, AB, SAS, S.A., S.A. or Ltd.

None of the twelve names a security certification on the pages checked. That is not proof that none exists, but it means a certification could not be verified for any of them and is left out of every entry.

Where a price is published: Fddb €3.99 per month, €11.99 per six months or €19.99 per year; Mahlzait €7.99 per month or €29.99 per year; Snapkin €9.99 per month or €49.99 per year at launch pricing (regular €99.99); Nutrium from $15 to $39 per month depending on plan.

Foodvisor, Fastic, Lifesum, Carbs & Cals and Nutracheck show prices in the app or at purchase, and Yazio sells Pro through the app stores. Fitatu and myfood24 publish no price on the pages checked.
