European Boat Rental Platform Tools

A boat rental platform lets renters search boats, request or book a charter and pay online, with owners or charter companies supplying the vessel. The European platforms below are run by companies registered in France, Germany, Slovakia, Spain, Italy, Switzerland or the UK, so the booking contract and payment terms sit under European law instead of a US marketplace.

How we rank these tools — 4-step process
  1. 1
    European ownership, verified

The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA, the UK, Switzerland or Israel, and processes customer data in Europe or Israel. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.

  2. 2
    Category fit and hands-on review

What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.

  3. 3
    Compliance and pricing check

GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.

  4. 4
    Position on this page

Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect the order tools appear in. It never buys a listing: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.

Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Vendors can pay for more visibility, higher up on the review pages; it never affects whether a tool is listed. Editorial policy

Key takeaways

  • SamBoat, run by Lacani SAS in Bordeaux, is the broadest marketplace in this list, with over 50,000 boats on its homepage, rented with or without a captain.
  • Boataround of Bratislava states in its terms that prices are per boat for the whole reservation, VAT and taxes included, and answers the phone from 8am to 10pm every day.
  • Three platforms are brokers or directories without instant booking: Boatbookings works by enquiry, YachtCharterFleet lists 3,682 yachts, and CharterWorld focuses on luxury and superyachts.
  • Sailogy (Switzerland) and the four UK-based entries, Sunsail, Boatbookings, YachtCharterFleet and CharterWorld, are European but outside the EU, covered by EU adequacy decisions.
  • Hosting is the weak spot of the category: SamBoat names Amazon Web Services LLC in Seattle, and Boatjump names a US arm, Boatjump USA Inc, while most others state no hosting location at all.

European boat rental platforms are online marketplaces, brokers and operator sites for renting or chartering a boat, run by a company registered in Europe, which matters because the booking contract, the payment and the renter's identity documents then sit with a European entity under European consumer and data protection law.

SamBoat is a boat rental marketplace operated by Lacani SAS, with a registered office in Bordeaux, and it sits at the top of this list because of the width of its fleet. The homepage says visitors can choose among over 50,000 boats, rented with or without a captain, from sailboats and RIBs to barges and jet skis. The site is available in nine languages.

The legal notice publishes the Bordeaux trade register and VAT numbers and states that Lacani SAS is registered with ORIAS as an insurance agent. It also names Amazon Web Services LLC in Seattle as host, without a region. The legal notice and the privacy policy give two different Bordeaux addresses, and the pages we read show no fee, deposit or cancellation terms.

  • More than 50,000 boats, with or without a captain
  • Site offered in nine languages

The homepage shows its own boats, the Sunsail 424, 454L and 464 catamarans and monohulls from the 34.1 up to the 53.5.

Trip types are bareboat, skippered, flotillas and regattas, plus sailing schools in Portsmouth, Marina Agana and Lefkas offering RYA courses. A German imprint names Mariner Travel GmbH in Bad Vilbel. #8 Boatbookings

London, United Kingdom Quote on enquiry; charter fee, VAT and expense guide on the site Demo on request

Best for: Charterers who want a person to arrange a crewed or bareboat yacht and explain the costs

Its terms say English law governs and English courts have non-exclusive jurisdiction. The site presents handpicked charter yachts, and a charter is arranged through an enquiry form instead of an instant booking button.

According to the terms, Boatbookings is a disclosed broker acting for suppliers such as the owner, the fleet manager or the charter operator, and the final contract is between renter and supplier. Search splits by crewed or bareboat and by motor, catamaran or sail. A fees page lists VAT for crewed Mediterranean charters: 20% in France, 22% in Italy, 21% in Spain, 12% in Greece, 13% in Croatia and 18% in Turkey.

The homepage shows 3,682 yachts that visitors can filter by motor, sailing, classic or catamaran type and by destination.

Destination pages span France, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Australia, Thailand and Dubai. The site adds news, reviews, special offers and advice articles such as Why Use a Yacht Broker and Charter Costs Explained, and owners can use Add My Yacht. English law applies under the terms. • Owners can add their yacht

Where YachtCharterFleet falls short

  • Described as a directory; booking steps not explained
  • Crewed luxury yachts only
  • No prices in the pages we read
  • No hosting location disclosed

Standout feature. YachtCharterFleet pairs a yacht directory with explainer pages written for first-time charterers.

#10 CharterWorld

London, United Kingdom Special offers and prices pages exist; no price figures read Demo on request

Best for: Clients planning a crewed luxury or superyacht charter who want a London broker with reviews

  • Operating company. CharterWorld LLP

  • Source code. Closed source
  • Replaces. Boatsetter (luxury yacht rentals)

Listings are grouped by builder, for example Benetti, Sunseeker, Azimut, Feadship, Sanlorenzo, Lurssen and Amels, and by region from the Mediterranean and the Caribbean to the Seychelles, the Maldives and the Pacific.

Yacht reviews, charter specials and broker advice sit next to the listings. Phone numbers are given for London, Nice and Monaco, New York and Miami, Sydney and New Zealand, and the privacy notice names a data protection officer. The terms say the charterworld.com domain is owned by BOATWORLD LIMITED and licensed by the LLP. No prices, booking flow or hosting location appear in the pages we read.

What CharterWorld does well

  • LLP and registered office named in the privacy notice
  • Pages by builder, location and review
  • Broker advice and special offers published
  • Named data protection officer
  • Phone contacts on several continents

Where CharterWorld falls short

Standout feature. CharterWorld is the entry that organises its listings by yacht builder and names a data protection officer.

How do I choose between a boat rental marketplace, a broker and an operator?

The model decides who you sign with and who answers when something goes wrong, so pick it before you pick a brand. SamBoat and Borrow A Boat list boats from many suppliers and let you request or book. Boataround and Sailogy sell professional charters on behalf of operators.

Boatbookings states in its terms that it is a disclosed broker and that the final contract is with the supplier. Sunsail is the third model: one company renting its own fleet of catamarans and monohulls, with sailing schools next to it. YachtCharterFleet and CharterWorld are closer to directories for crewed luxury yachts.

Which European boat rental platform shows the full price up front?

Boataround is the clearest on this point: its terms say prices cover the entire reservation per boat, including VAT and all other taxes. BlueKeys shows Amalfi Coast prices of €150 per person for group tours and €900 for a private boat, with skipper, fuel and VAT included.

Most of the others do not show a figure in the pages we read. SamBoat reveals prices only after you choose a listing, Boatbookings quotes on enquiry and explains VAT by country on a fees page, and Sailogy, Sunsail, YachtCharterFleet and CharterWorld show no price list. Ask for a written total including deposit before paying.

Is a European boat rental platform automatically outside US jurisdiction?

No. The contracting entity is European, but the infrastructure and sometimes the corporate group are not. SamBoat states that Amazon Web Services LLC in Seattle hosts the site, without naming a region. Boatjump S.L. in Valencia has a sister company in the United States, Boatjump USA Inc, named in the terms.

Sunsail belongs to the Travelopia group according to its own terms, and the pages do not say who owns the group. Eight of the ten platforms give no hosting location at all. Treat the question as a due-diligence item: ask each vendor where the data is stored and which affiliates can access it.

What changes when I leave Boatsetter for a European platform?

Boatsetter's terms form a contract with Collaborative Boating, Inc. in the United States, with arbitration and a class action waiver. A European platform replaces that with a contract under French, Slovak, German, Spanish, Swiss, Italian or English law, depending on the entity.

The product changes as well. Boatsetter focuses on short rentals of owner boats in US locations. The European platforms centre on week-long yacht charters, skippered day trips and brokered crewed yachts. Owners moving across must recreate their listings by hand, since the pages we read mention no import from Boatsetter.

When should I not switch away from Boatsetter?

Stay if your boat or your trip is in a US state, on a US lake or in the US Virgin Islands. The European platforms cover Europe, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean through professional fleets and have little to offer on an American lake.

Stay also if the Boatsetter Promise matters to you: it offers refunds for severe weather or an owner no-show and reviews each vessel against a 100-point checklist. None of the ten European platforms publishes a single scheme like it in the pages we read, so weigh that against the jurisdiction argument.

How do I rent out my own boat on a European platform?

SamBoat lists owner boats next to professional fleets, and Borrow A Boat has a portal for boat owners, charter companies and renters. Sailogy and YachtCharterFleet invite fleet owners or yacht owners to list, and Sunsail runs a yacht owner programme, so check on each whether a single private boat is accepted.

Before you list, ask three things: who collects the renter's payment, which insurance applies, and which entity you contract with. SamBoat states its ORIAS registration as an insurance agent, which is a good starting point for the insurance question.

How we selected and ranked these 10 tools

Every tool on this page is in the European Purpose directory, which means the operating company is established in Europe and we have verified that from the company register or the vendor's own legal notice rather than from a marketing page. Tools headquartered outside Europe are not eligible, however good they are.

  1. Feature verification (weight: 40%). We check each capability against the vendor's own documentation and product pages, and record what the tool does rather than what the category is assumed to include.
  2. Ease of adoption (weight: 30%). Integrations, published API access, trial availability and how much configuration stands between signing and a usable result.
  3. Value and transparency (weight: 30%). Published pricing counts in a vendor's favour; quote-only pricing is recorded as quote-only rather than estimated. We weigh what a buyer gets for the entry price, not the headline feature count.
  4. Editorial review. Every page is researched and drafted with AI assistance, and the compliance and pricing claims are checked against the vendor's documentation before it is published under the founder's editorial responsibility. The three weights above decide the order; a position is a ranking against the other European tools in this category, not an absolute score.

Vendor-reported outcomes — ROI figures, margin uplift, time saved — are labelled as vendor claims wherever they appear on this page. We have not audited them, and neither has anyone else who quotes them. Read our full editorial process for how pages are re-verified.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the criterion. For the number of boats, SamBoat (over 50,000 on its homepage) and Boataround (27,110 yachts) lead. For price transparency, Boataround and BlueKeys state what is included. For broker help, Borrow A Boat and Boatbookings. For a single operator's own fleet, Sunsail. For crewed luxury yachts, CharterWorld and YachtCharterFleet.

Yes. SamBoat in France is the nearest match as an owner marketplace with a large multi-type fleet. Boataround in Slovakia, Borrow A Boat in Germany and Boatjump in Spain cover charters in the Mediterranean and beyond. None of the ten replicates the Boatsetter Promise or its US lake and city coverage.

Boataround states phone support from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week, with numbers for many countries. Sailogy lists phone lines in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and France. BlueKeys takes bookings by phone or WhatsApp, and CharterWorld lists numbers for London, Nice and Monaco, New York and Miami, Sydney and New Zealand.

SamBoat lists boats with or without a captain, and Borrow A Boat does so with or without a skipper. Sunsail offers bareboat charter next to skippered charter and flotillas, Boatbookings lists bareboat and crewed yachts, and Sailogy and Boataround sell professional charters, and the pages we read do not break their offers down by captain.

Sailogy is registered in Chiasso, Switzerland. Sunsail (Crawley), Boatbookings and CharterWorld (both London) and YachtCharterFleet (Poole) are registered in the United Kingdom. Both countries have an EU adequacy decision, so personal data may flow to them freely, but neither is in the EEA.

The pages we read do not allow a price ranking. Only BlueKeys states a full-boat figure, from €900 for a private Amalfi Coast charter, and Boataround shows early bird 2027 offers of up to 45% off. Sunsail mentions up to 15% off BVI charters. Compare a written all-in quote from two or three platforms for your dates.
