European Alternatives to Proofpoint
Looking for a European alternative to Proofpoint? Proofpoint, Inc. is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, has been owned by the private equity firm Thoma Bravo since 2021, and sells its email protection as a gateway or an API through a demo request rather than a public price list.
The European email security tools below come from Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Spain and France, and cover gateway filtering, behavioural detection, encryption, DMARC and awareness training under European contracts.
How we rank these tools — 4-step process
-
1
European ownership, verified
The company is headquartered and incorporated in the EU, EEA or Switzerland, and processes customer data in Europe. A US parent company disqualifies a tool from this page regardless of where its servers are.
-
2
Category fit and hands-on review
What the tool actually does, who it suits, and where it falls short — checked against the vendor’s own documentation, changelog and pricing page rather than its marketing copy.
-
3
Compliance and pricing check
GDPR posture, hosting location and the prices quoted on this page are verified against the vendor’s public pricing before publication, and re-checked when we revisit the category.
-
4
Position on this page
Placement on this page can be paid, and that can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. It never buys a good review: a tool that fails the checks above is not here at any price, and payment does not change the shortcomings we write about. A vendor can ask us to correct a factual error — not to remove a criticism.
Vendors can pay for visibility on this page. It never changes what an entry says about a product, including the criticism, and we earn nothing when you click through to a vendor. Paid placement can affect which tools appear here and the order they appear in. Editorial policy

Key takeaways
- Proofpoint, Inc. is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California and has been owned by Thoma Bravo since 2021, according to its own privacy statement and about page.
- Proofpoint relies on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework for transfers from the EU, and offers a data processing agreement with Standard Contractual Clauses on its Trust site.
- Proofpoint sells Core Email Protection as a gateway or an API, and its front page asks buyers to request a demo rather than showing a price.
- Retarus, Libraesva and NoSpamProxy are the closest European gateway replacements, and xorlab and Topsec fit a Microsoft 365 estate that wants a detection layer.
- None of the ten European tools listed here publishes a price list, so the comparison with Proofpoint is about scope, jurisdiction and deployment model, not about a cheaper number.
Why people leave Proofpoint
Proofpoint is the name most security teams think of first when email security comes up. Its own about page says Eric Hahn founded it in 2002, that it went public in 2012 and that it passed one billion dollars in revenue in 2020. The product line has grown well beyond a filter: Core Email Protection, Email Fraud Defense for DMARC, ZenGuide awareness training, Enterprise DLP, insider threat management and a communications archive all appear on the front page today.
The contracting party in the privacy statement is Proofpoint, Inc., headquartered at 925 W. Maude Ave in Sunnyvale, California. Since 2021 the company has belonged to Thoma Bravo, which the about page describes as a private equity software investor, in a deal it calls the largest go-private software transaction in history. Proofpoint lists offices in France, Germany and Ireland, but the group that owns the mail filtering service, and the law that group answers to, is American.
People look beyond it for three practical reasons. A mail gateway reads every message a company sends and receives, so who can be compelled to hand over that content matters. The product is sold through a demo request, with no price list to test a budget against. And a platform this wide is more than many mid-sized firms use, so the bill covers modules nobody switched on.
- The mail filter is run by a US company owned by private equity Proofpoint, Inc. is the entity named in the privacy statement, and the about page puts it under Thoma Bravo since 2021. An American provider and an American owner mean US law reaches the filtered mail, including through the CLOUD Act, wherever the data centre stands. Buyers in healthcare, law, public bodies and finance often have to document that exposure, and a European vendor under European law removes the question.
- Transfers rest on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework The privacy statement says Proofpoint and its subsidiaries comply with the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and customers can sign a data processing agreement with Standard Contractual Clauses from the Trust site. That is a lawful route today. It is also a route that depends on an adequacy decision, and earlier frameworks (Safe Harbor, Privacy Shield) were struck down. A vendor inside the EU or EEA needs no such bridge for your mail.
- No public price, only a demo request The front page offers Request a demo under how to buy, and we found no price list for Core Email Protection on the pages we read. You learn the cost after a sales process, and you learn it for a bundle that may include fraud defense, training and archiving. Most European vendors on this page also quote on request, so price transparency is not a European advantage, but a smaller product scope makes the quote easier to read.
- The platform is broader than a mail filter Proofpoint now sells data security for AI, insider threat management, data security posture management and digital communications governance next to email protection. A company that only wants inbound filtering and DMARC reporting is buying into a strategy aimed at much larger security teams. A narrower European product is easier to deploy, to explain to auditors and to leave later.
What you have to replace, not just match
Start with the mail path. Core Email Protection runs as a gateway or through an API, so find out which one your tenant uses before you shop.
A gateway means your MX record points at Proofpoint, and replacing it is a mail-flow migration with a cutover date. An API deployment sits beside Microsoft 365, and replacing it means a second product has to read mail after delivery. Retarus, Libraesva and NoSpamProxy cover the gateway case. xorlab and Topsec Inbox Protect cover the add-on case.
Then list the modules attached to the contract. Email Fraud Defense is Proofpoint's DMARC product, ZenGuide is its awareness training, and an archive or DLP product may sit on the same order form. Few European filters bundle all of that. Topsec sells managed DMARC and phishing awareness training next to its filter, Alinto offers archiving of up to ten years, and SEPPmail and NoSpamProxy bring encryption. Anything left over, such as insider threat tooling, needs a separate answer.
Finally, count what the incumbent has that no European entry here claims. Proofpoint's about page speaks of more than 5,000 team members and customers among more than half of the Fortune 1000, and the vendor positions its threat intelligence as a platform asset. None of the European vendors on this page publishes a comparable figure, and independent test results are scarce across the category. Replace the intelligence feed by testing detection on your own mail.

How each alternative compares to Proofpoint
Retarus Email Security
The nearest match to a managed enterprise gateway with a European operator
Best for: Larger organisations that want a vendor-run gateway, or a Microsoft 365 API, with enterprise support
Against Proofpoint, Retarus is the entry that most resembles the way a large customer already buys: a vendor-operated service, either as a classic gateway or as an API for Microsoft 365, with sandboxing, email continuity and post-delivery re-checking of links and attachments. The company is privately owned in Munich and says it answers to customers rather than investors, which is the opposite ownership story from a private equity buyout.
The offering is narrower than Proofpoint's. Email security is one line in a messaging portfolio that also covers fax and SMS, and there is no insider threat or DLP suite to match. Pricing is quote-only. Retarus operates infrastructure outside Europe, so someone moving from Proofpoint for jurisdiction reasons should write the processing location into the contract and not rely on the made in Europe label.
What Retarus Email Security does better than Proofpoint
- Owned by a private Munich company rather than a private equity buyer
- Gateway or Microsoft 365 API from one vendor, as with Proofpoint
- Re-checks links and attachments after delivery
- Contract and support under European law
Where Retarus Email Security is a step down from Proofpoint
- Smaller threat research and brand reach than Proofpoint
- No data loss prevention or insider threat modules
- Processing location needs a contractual commitment
Standout against Proofpoint. It is the only entry that offers both a gateway and a Microsoft 365 API from a single European operator, the same two shapes Proofpoint sells.
Best for: Regulated organisations that cannot accept a shared multi-tenant cloud for mail
Proofpoint is a cloud service first, so the strongest argument for Libraesva is the thing it keeps that Proofpoint's model does not lead with: a genuine on-premises deployment next to its private cloud. A bank, hospital or ministry that has to keep the mail path inside its own walls can run the filter itself and still use a European, independent vendor.
It also covers more than spam. Since the 2025 combination into LibraCyber S.p.A., the group adds archiving, DMARC protection and phishing simulation around the gateway, which answers part of what Email Fraud Defense and ZenGuide do for Proofpoint customers. A 30-day free trial is offered. Prices are per mailbox on request, UK and US regional entities exist beside the Italian parent, and no certificate was published on the pages reviewed.
What Libraesva does better than Proofpoint
- Real on-premises option instead of cloud only
- Italian, independent ownership rather than a US parent
- Archiving, DMARC and phishing training available from the same group
- Free trial for a first test on live mail
Where Libraesva is a step down from Proofpoint
- The LibraCyber restructuring is recent, so confirm the contracting entity
- No published certificate on the pages reviewed
Standout against Proofpoint. It lets a buyer leave Proofpoint's cloud without leaving the gateway model, because the same filter can run on your own servers.
Best for: German-speaking mid-sized companies that exchange signed or encrypted mail with partners and authorities
Net at Work GmbH in Paderborn is owner-managed and says it has no external investors, and its gateway reports more than 6,000 customers. Where Proofpoint users often pair the filter with a separate encryption product, NoSpamProxy includes S/MIME and PGP with automated certificate management, large-file transfer from the mail client and disclaimer management, so one contract replaces two.
It runs as NoSpamProxy Cloud or as NoSpamProxy Server on premises, which is a real choice. The costs are the usual ones for this group: quote-only pricing, no hosting location named for the cloud edition on the pages reviewed, and a brand that is strongest in the DACH region. Choosing the server edition returns patching and maintenance to your team.
What NoSpamProxy does better than Proofpoint
- Encryption and certificate handling bundled, not a separate vendor
- Cloud or on-premises, decided by the customer
- Owner-managed with no outside investors
Where NoSpamProxy is a step down from Proofpoint
- Brand and support footprint concentrated in German-speaking markets
- No DMARC or awareness product comparable to Proofpoint's modules
- Cloud hosting location not stated
Standout against Proofpoint. Certificate management is automated inside the gateway, which is where mail encryption usually breaks after a few months.
Best for: Microsoft 365 estates worried about payment fraud and impersonation more than about spam volume
xorlab does a different job from a signature-driven gateway. It learns the relationships and communication patterns between senders and recipients, which is how it aims at business email compromise, credential phishing, spearphishing and QR-code phishing. Against Proofpoint it is best read as a detection layer you can pilot beside whatever you run today, or as a replacement for the filter if that is acceptable.
Cloud customer data is stated to be processed and stored in European data centres by Europe-based staff, which is a clearer location statement than most here. It is a Swiss company, so it sits outside the EU and EEA under an adequacy decision, and a tender requiring EU establishment could exclude it. It is narrower than Proofpoint, with no archiving, continuity or DLP, and the vendor offers an attack simulation instead of a price.
What xorlab does better than Proofpoint
- Behavioural detection aimed at payment fraud and impersonation
- Clear European data-centre statement for cloud customers
- Can run on-premises, hybrid or in the cloud
- Attack simulation shows what it catches on your own mail
Where xorlab is a step down from Proofpoint
- No archiving, continuity or DLP modules
- Swiss entity, outside the EU and EEA
- No published certificate on the pages reviewed
Standout against Proofpoint. It is the one entry built to catch the clean-looking message that asks for a bank account change.
Best for: Law firms, healthcare bodies and banks that send sensitive documents to recipients without certificates
SEPPmail answers a question Proofpoint buyers often solve with an add-on: how to send a confidential message to someone who runs no certificate infrastructure. Its GINA mode lets an external recipient read an encrypted message without installing software, and signing and large file transfer sit in the same gateway as the anti-spam filter. SEPPMAIL.cloud is hosted in data centres in Germany and Switzerland.
It is a Swiss company, so the EU adequacy decision, not membership, is the basis for transfers, and a tender that requires EU establishment may rule it out. Detection is not its identity, and a specialist such as xorlab will usually be stronger on business email compromise. There is no public price list, and no certificate was found on the pages reviewed.
What SEPPmail does better than Proofpoint
- Encryption, signing and filtering in one gateway
- Recipients read encrypted mail without installing anything
- Cloud hosted in Germany and Switzerland
- Deployable as cloud, appliance, hybrid or beside Microsoft 365
Where SEPPmail is a step down from Proofpoint
- Detection is secondary to encryption
- Swiss entity, outside the EU and EEA
- No awareness training or DMARC product to match Proofpoint
Standout against Proofpoint. GINA removes the certificate exchange that makes most encrypted mail projects stall.
Best for: Smaller IT teams that want filtering, DMARC enforcement and phishing awareness run for them by one provider
Topsec in Dublin is a managed provider, and its stack lines up with the parts of the Proofpoint contract that many mid-sized customers actually use: a filter with attachment sandboxing and URL scanning, managed DMARC, phishing awareness training and email continuity. Inbox Protect adds VIP impersonation protection for Microsoft 365 users.
Ireland is in the EU and the EEA, and the working language is English, which keeps documentation easy. Free trials of Inbox Protect and DMARC let you stage the move instead of committing to everything at once. The limits are the bundle size, a quote-only price, no named data location and no certificate on the pages reviewed. A buyer who wants a specialist in every layer will get more control from separate tools.
What Topsec Cloud Solutions does better than Proofpoint
- Managed DMARC and awareness training from one European supplier
- Day-to-day tuning is done for the customer
- Staged start through trials of Inbox Protect and DMARC
Where Topsec Cloud Solutions is a step down from Proofpoint
- Each layer is harder to judge on its own than a specialist product
- Data location not named on the pages reviewed
Standout against Proofpoint. It is the only entry here that pairs a filter with managed DMARC and awareness training under one Irish contract.
Best for: Austrian and German public bodies, and their suppliers, that must explain every step of the processing chain
IKARUS Security Software GmbH in Vienna states that development, data processing and support for mail.security all happen in-house in Austria. Against Proofpoint, whose group spans many countries, that gives a buyer one company in one country to name in a transfer analysis. The filter checks links when a message arrives and again when a user clicks.
Zero-day sandboxing is a separate paid add-on built on Trellix technology, so a US-owned engine sits in that part of the chain if you take it. IKARUS is the smallest vendor in this group by public footprint, prices on request and publishes no free tier. S/MIME certificates are available through a partnership with Certum rather than natively.
What IKARUS mail.security does better than Proofpoint
- Single-country statement for development, processing and support
- Links are re-checked at click time
- No subsidiary network to trace
Where IKARUS mail.security is a step down from Proofpoint
- Sandboxing costs extra and uses a US-owned engine
- Much smaller than Proofpoint in reach and references
Standout against Proofpoint. It makes the simplest data-flow answer of the ten: Austria for development, processing and support.
Best for: Managed service providers and small businesses on Microsoft 365 that want an Irish, English-speaking vendor
SpamTitan is built by Copperfasten Technologies Ltd, trading as TitanHQ, registered in Ireland and based in Galway. It blocks spam, viruses, malware, ransomware and malicious links, and the vendor markets several detection layers for business email compromise. It works natively alongside Microsoft 365, where most of its customers sit.
Its identity is the channel. A provider that already resells WebTitan DNS filtering and ArcTitan archiving can add mail filtering from the same supplier and portal. Prices come through a quote form, and the direct buying experience for a single large enterprise is thinner than the channel one. No hosting location or certificate was named on the pages reviewed.
What SpamTitan (TitanHQ) does better than Proofpoint
- Irish vendor inside the EU with an English-language buying process
- Archiving and DNS filtering available from the same supplier
- Established with managed service providers
Where SpamTitan (TitanHQ) is a step down from Proofpoint
- Smaller independent footprint than Proofpoint
- Quote form instead of published rates
- Hosting location not named on the pages reviewed
Standout against Proofpoint. A provider can run filtering, archiving and DNS protection for many small clients from one Irish supplier.
Iberlayer Email Guardian
A small Spanish cloud filter with documented credentials and an open trial
Best for: Spanish public bodies and suppliers that need a catalogued product, and any team that wants to test without a card
Iberlayer S.L. in Tres Cantos near Madrid runs Email Guardian, a cloud filter with real-time sandbox analysis of content, URLs, QR codes and attachments. It holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and is listed in the Spanish CCN CPSTIC catalogue as product 529, which is a documented credential most vendors on this page do not show.
Security teams get SOC integration with encrypted real-time log forwarding and an MFA-protected API, so mail events can reach a SIEM. It is a filter, not a suite, so encryption, archiving and DMARC come from other tools. The company is small and aimed at the Spanish market, there is no public price list, and no data centre is named on the pages reviewed.
What Iberlayer Email Guardian does better than Proofpoint
- Published ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certificate and a CCN catalogue listing
- 30-day trial without registration or card
- Log forwarding into a SIEM
Where Iberlayer Email Guardian is a step down from Proofpoint
- No encryption, archiving or DMARC modules
- Mainly Spanish-market support and references
Standout against Proofpoint. It is the only entry here that publishes a certificate and a national catalogue listing.
Best for: French public and regulated buyers, or mixed Exchange and hosted estates, that need a relay with continuity
Alinto Group in Lyon is a mail-infrastructure vendor, and Cleanmail is its anti-spam and anti-virus relay that sits upstream of any mail server. It does not need Microsoft 365, so it can front an on-premises Exchange, a hosted mailbox or both. Emergency webmail keeps users reading mail during an outage, and optional archiving runs up to ten years.
Hosting is a private cloud in France or Switzerland, or on-premises, which answers the question where the mail goes more precisely than most cloud filters. It is a filter and relay, not a behavioural detection platform, and a Microsoft 365-only company may find an add-on easier than rerouting mail. There is no public price list and no certificate was found on the pages reviewed.
What Alinto Cleanmail does better than Proofpoint
- Platform-agnostic relay, not tied to one mail system
- France or Switzerland hosting, or on-premises
- Emergency webmail and long-term archiving
Where Alinto Cleanmail is a step down from Proofpoint
- Not a behavioural detection layer for business email compromise
- Requires a mail-routing change
Standout against Proofpoint. Users keep mail access through the emergency webmail even when the main mail platform is down.
What actually breaks when you switch
Moving off a gateway is mostly a mail-flow project. Lower the TTL on your MX records, run the new filter in parallel on a test domain or a pilot group, and agree a cutover window. Export what you need first: quarantine history, allow and block lists, policy rules, DMARC reports and archived mail. The formats differ by vendor, so ask each candidate what it can import and what you must rebuild by hand.
Expect retraining and contract timing too. Users who released messages from a Proofpoint digest need the new quarantine workflow explained, and your reporting dashboards will not carry over.
Check the notice period and renewal date on the current agreement before you commit to a date, because a multi-year term can make an early exit costly. Keep the old service in monitoring mode for a few weeks, and do not forget connected systems that relay mail through it, such as scanners, ticketing tools and application servers.
Does a European vendor stop US authorities from reaching my mail?
It removes one direct route. A European company under European law is not the addressee of a US order the way Proofpoint, Inc. is. The protection is not absolute, because a European vendor that has a US subsidiary or runs infrastructure on a US cloud can still be pulled into US reach. Libraesva states UK and US regional entities next to its Italian parent, and Retarus operates outside Europe too.
So read the contract, not the flag. Ask for the processing location in writing, the subprocessor list and whether staff outside the EEA can reach message content. IKARUS, SEPPmail, xorlab and Alinto publish the most on this, as the category article shows.
Can a smaller European filter match Proofpoint on threat detection?
Nobody can promise that from a web page, and we do not. Proofpoint has the larger installed base and the more extensive threat research organisation, by its own account. A European vendor can still catch what matters in your traffic, and detection varies more by mail profile than by brand.
Run a proof of concept on live mail for several weeks. Compare missed phishing and false positives against your current Proofpoint logs. Iberlayer and Libraesva both offer a 30-day trial, and xorlab offers an attack simulation, which gives you evidence rather than claims.
Which one to pick
If you want the nearest like-for-like, start with Retarus, then Libraesva and NoSpamProxy. Retarus suits a larger organisation that wants a vendor-run service, Libraesva suits a buyer who must keep the filter on its own infrastructure, and NoSpamProxy suits a company that also needs encryption handled inside the gateway. Treat all three as candidates for a parallel run on live mail, since none publishes a price.
If the pain is business email compromise inside Microsoft 365, pilot xorlab or Topsec Inbox Protect first. If the pain is confidential exchange with outside recipients, SEPPmail is the specialist.
If you buy Proofpoint mainly for DMARC and awareness training, Topsec is the closest single contract. Stay with Proofpoint when you depend on its data loss prevention, archive or insider threat modules, or when its threat intelligence is worth more to you than European jurisdiction. No European tool on this page replaces that whole platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
For a like-for-like gateway, Retarus, Libraesva and NoSpamProxy are the closest on this page. Retarus offers a gateway or a Microsoft 365 API from Munich, Libraesva keeps an on-premises option from Italy, and NoSpamProxy bundles encryption from Paderborn. If the real need is catching business email compromise, xorlab is a detection layer. None publishes a price, so test on your own mail.
According to its own about page, Proofpoint was acquired by the private equity firm Thoma Bravo in 2021 in a deal valued at 12.3 billion dollars. The privacy statement names Proofpoint, Inc. in Sunnyvale, California as the responsible company. It lists offices in France, Germany and Ireland, but the owner and the parent company are American.
Proofpoint states that it complies with the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and offers a GDPR data processing agreement that includes the Standard Contractual Clauses. Those are recognised transfer tools, so a lawful setup exists. The issue buyers raise is not paperwork but exposure to US law and dependence on a framework that can be challenged, as earlier ones were.
Partly. Topsec in Dublin offers managed DMARC and phishing awareness training next to its filter, which is the closest single-supplier match on this page. Libraesva also adds DMARC, archiving and phishing simulation after its 2025 combination with Cyber Guru. Other tools here are filters only, so plan separate products for the modules they leave out.
xorlab and Topsec Inbox Protect are positioned for that job, and Retarus offers an API deployment for Microsoft 365 next to its gateway. SpamTitan states native Microsoft 365 integration. A pure gateway such as Alinto Cleanmail or NoSpamProxy works in front of the tenant by changing your MX record, which is a mail-flow change you should schedule.
