Now, a major synthesis of scientific literature is offering some precision to the conversation — and the headline finding isn't quite what most people expect. Compulsive scrolling, not sheer screen time, is the metric most strongly linked to measurable drops in attention and cognitive control.

A research team at Griffith University in Australia published what is among the most comprehensive meta-analyses to date on the cognitive and mental health effects of short-form video use. Led by Lan Nguyen at the university's School of Applied Psychology, the study — published in Psychological Bulletin (Nguyen and colleagues, 2025) — reviewed 71 studies covering 98,299 participants, pooling 70 of them for quantitative analysis. The scope and methodology make it a credible reference point, even as the authors themselves are careful to flag what the data cannot yet prove.

The meta-analysis examined short-form video platforms — primarily TikTok, its Chinese counterpart Douyin, and platforms described in the literature as "general" short-form video. Crucially, no studies in the pool looked directly at Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, or YouTube Shorts, a limitation worth noting given how broadly these products are embedded in daily digital life. The study protocol was preregistered, and the underlying data are openly available on the Open Science Framework, a credibility marker that aligns with open science standards increasingly expected in rigorous research.

Across 14 pooled studies measuring cognition — most using self-rated attention and self-control rather than laboratory-tested performance — heavier short-form video use correlated with poorer cognition at r = −.34, a moderate effect using conventional thresholds where .10 is weak and .50 is strong. Attention scored at −.38, while inhibitory control — the ability to override an impulse — came in at −.41, the strongest single association in the dataset. Memory, language, and working memory showed only weak correlations; reasoning showed none at all, though that last finding rests on just one study.

Across the 61 studies measuring mental health outcomes, the overall association was weaker (−.21) but consistent. Stress (−.34) and anxiety (−.33) led the pack, with depression, loneliness, and sleep quality showing smaller but persistent links. Age proved statistically irrelevant — the pattern held equally for young people and adults — while platform did matter on the mental health side, with general short-form use showing a somewhat stronger association than TikTok-specific use.

Why Compulsion Matters More Than Duration for Cognitive Health

The most policy-relevant finding in the entire analysis is buried beneath the top-line correlation: how usage was measured dramatically changed the outcome. Studies used three main approaches — counting hours of daily use, counting how frequently users opened apps, and using addiction-style questionnaire scales that assess loss of control, preoccupation, and use that interferes with daily responsibilities.

Duration — raw time spent — correlated with poorer cognition at only −.20 and barely registered against mental health at −.10. Frequency of app-opening showed no significant link to mental health at all. But addiction-style measures correlated with poorer cognition at −.37 and poorer mental health at −.32. Current regulatory and corporate frameworks — including the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires platforms to assess and mitigate systemic risks to users, and the UK Online Safety Act — tend to focus on content moderation and time-on-platform reporting. For product builders and UX architects, this is a significant signal. Infinite scroll, autoplay, notification stacking, and variable-reward content ranking are the mechanisms that convert intentional browsing into compulsive use. These are design choices. The research does not provide a causal proof, but it identifies the behavioural pattern that the strongest associations attach to — and that pattern is precisely what engagement-maximisation algorithms are engineered to produce.

What the Data Cannot Prove — and Why That Matters for Policy

The honest version of this research requires acknowledging its structural limits, and they are substantial. Eighty-seven percent of the studies are correlational and cross-sectional — meaning they are snapshots, not longitudinal film. The data cannot establish that compulsive scrolling causes weaker attention. The causal arrow may point the other way: people who already struggle with attentional regulation or anxiety may be drawn more deeply into algorithmic feeds precisely because those feeds are designed around low-friction, rapid rewards that don't demand sustained focus.

The authors address this directly, noting that individuals experiencing psychological distress may turn to short-form video for relief — and that both mechanisms may operate simultaneously in a feedback loop. This is not a minor caveat. Only about one in ten studies controlled for general social media use, so it is not yet possible to cleanly separate short-form video effects from broader internet use patterns. The database search closed in October 2024, which in a field moving at this pace is already a notable lag.

Two surprising non-findings deserve mention because they challenge the dominant public narrative. The research also has implications for organisations managing distributed teams or hybrid workforces. Attention and inhibitory control — the two cognitive dimensions showing the strongest associations — are precisely the functions most critical to sustained knowledge work: code review, threat analysis, policy drafting, client communication. If a segment of the workforce is operating with attentional resources partially consumed by compulsive digital habits outside of work hours, the productivity and error-rate implications are legitimate operational questions, not moralising.
